ABOUT US Santa Cruz Bicycles was founded in Santa Cruz, California, in 1993, in a space the size of a single car garage inside the Seabright Cannery. Our first bike, the Tazmon, was a single pivot dual suspension machine that rattled established sensibilities and helped define our then-ethos of “simply advanced”. That bike was the cornerstone for a brand that was founded on the notion of doing things our own way in order to build the best. We have been rattling sensibilities ever since.
We now manufacture 19 models of mountain bike, made from either carbon fiber or aluminum, from hardtails to 10" travel downhill machines. We offer suspension designs ranging from the simple efficiency of our single pivots to the cutting edge performance found in our unique VPP® system. These are available with a wide range of component and suspension options to choose from, as well as a newly hatched Custom Color Choice Program for select models. Each and every one of our bikes is the distillation of our desire to ride and build the highest performance mountain bikes in the world. No more, no less.
We could get all touchy feely here and talk about how we are committed and impassioned riders, and how we love bikes so much that it somehow elevates us into something unique, but that’s kind of common fodder for these “about” sections. EVERYONE working in this industry should be committed and impassioned. It takes that kind of commitment to try and build the perfect bike. Still, we think we chase that vision harder, smarter and sometimes a bit weirder than the others.

JULIANA Hydroformed aluminum tubing Single pivot suspension 100mm travel Tapered head tube Collet pivot axle Women’s specific sizing This set up: Kit: R XC Shock: CTD Adjust Fork: Fox 32 Float 120 CTD Colors: Gloss White Powder Blue
Take the traits that define our Superlight— lightweight aluminum frame, simple, durable, proven single pivot suspension, confidence inspiring handling—and shuffle them along the size spectrum a little bit to the left. Bringing all these characteristics to fruition in smaller sizes with more fit options and standover clearance is the essence of the Juliana.
We’re not going to slap a pink paintjob and floral patterns on a kid’s bike and call it women’s specific. The Juliana is available in sizes to fit all women, serious or not.

TALLBOY
29" wheels Hydroformed aluminum tubing VPP® suspension 100mm travel Grease ports, angular contact bearings 142×12 rear axle This set up: Kit: R XC Shock: CTD Adjust Fork: Fox 32 Float 120 CTD Colors: Satin Black Red
Our Tallboy Carbon took the big wheel market by storm when it was introduced, earning praise from the 29" faithful and skeptics alike, and also created a demand for an aluminum sibling. So along came the aluminum Tallboy; same 29" wheels and award winning handling as the carbon bike, same 100mm travel, same
velvety plush but crisp pedaling VPP® suspension, same angular contact bearings and oversized aluminum pivot axles. It is the value packed alloy clone of the trail bombing, racer friendly carbon Tallboy, identical in almost every way except for material choice and price tag.

BLUR TRC
Proprietary carbon fiber construction VPP® suspension 125mm travel 142×12 rear axle Dropper post friendly cable routing Grease ports, angular contact bearings This set up: Kit: SPX XC 3x Shock: CTD Adjust Fork: Fox 32 Float 130 CTD Adjust Kashima Colors: Gloss White Matte Carbon
Introduced with the intent of either a) giving XC riders a bike that offered more steep terrain prowess without sacrificing weight or climbing performance, or b) as an XC bike for downhillers, or c) the much lighter but still very aggressive reincarnation of the dearly departed Blur 4X, the Blur TRc has found itself at home in all the above mentioned garages.
125mm travel, super light and stiff carbon fiber frame, VPP® suspension, new school geometry pairing a snappy pedaling position with a rangy top tube and corner carving laid back head angle, these elements have all coalesced into a category defying bike that has also become the sweetheart of the growing Enduro race scene.

BLUR LT
Hydroformed aluminum frame VPP® suspension 140mm travel Dropper post friendly cable routing 142×12 rear axle ISCG05 mount Grease ports, angular contact bearings, offset lower link This set up: Kit: SPX AM Shock: CTD Fork: Fox 34 Float 150 CTD Adjust Kashima Colors: Red Harbor Gray
Continuing the evolution of the do-it-all trailbike, the Blur LT has received some new tweaks to keep the evergreen contender ahead of the pack. The 140mm travel VPP® suspension cradled in a durable and respectably light frame has been upgraded via reworked top and downtubes for greater strength, and the addition of an offset lower link and an ISCG mount.
The ISCG mount allows for more versatility when mounting chainguides, the new lower link features recessed grease ports, ensuring that one of the all-time versatile trailbikes stays at the front of the dust cloud.

BLUR LTC
Proprietary carbon fiber construction VPP suspension 140mm travel 142×12 rear axle ISCG05 mount Dropper post friendly cable routing Grease ports, angular contact bearings
Furthering the legendary versatility of the Blur LT, the Blur LTc utilizes a carbon fiber frame to turn the knobs up to 11—this is one of the strongest frames we offer, bar none, yet is substantially lighter than its aluminum counterpart. Chassis stiffness has also been increased substantially, which serves to enhance already well-loved handling characteristics.
Looking for a trouble free backcountry trail mauler? How about a versatile Enduro or SuperD weapon? The Blur LTc is a damn good call either way.

TALLBOY LT 29" wheels Hydroformed aluminum frame VPP® suspension 135mm travel 142×12 rear axle Dropper post friendly cable routing ISCG05 mount Grease ports, angular contact bearings This set up: Kit: SPX AM 2x Shock: CTD Fork: Rockshox Revelation 140 RCT3 Colors: Gulf Blue Gun Black
With 29" wheels finding greater acceptance amongst more and more riders, it was only a matter of time before some of those riders began pushing their boundaries and demanding a bike that was designed for more brutal terrain. The new Tallboy LT is our offering to those riders: aggressive geometry, 135mm of VPP® suspension
travel, adjustable angular contact lower pivot bearings with recessed grease ports, custom drawn aluminum tubing, tapered head tube, and ISCG05 mounts. Maintaining the climb-happy pedaling characteristics of all our VPP® bikes, the Tallboy LT takes the go-anywhere ethos of the original Tallboy and brings along a whole lot more game
when the trail points downward and gets steep and chunky. It's a new breed of bigwheeled trail bike.

TALLBOY LTC 29" wheels Light, strong, carbon fiber frame VPP® suspension 135mm travel 142×12 rear axle Dropper post friendly cable routing ISCG05 mount Grease ports, angular contact bearings
This set up: Kit: XTR 3x ENVE Shock: CTD Adjust Fork: Fox 34 Float 140 CTD Adjust Kashima Colors: Gloss Solar Yellow Matte Carbon
We waved the carbon fiber wand at the new Tallboy LT, offering all the same features, and ended up with a frame that weighs 5.35 pounds with a shock bolted in there. That is not a typo. 135mm travel, VPP suspension, great big wheels, 142×12mm rear axle, ISCG05 mounts, plenty of beef where it counts, and the damn thing
only weighs 5.35 pounds (this is worth repeating). That's obscenely light for this type of bike. In spite of the feathery weight, this is still an aggressive all-mountain contender, and as such is stiff enough and strong enough to devour anything you throw at it without so much as a twitch.

HECKLER Hydroformed aluminum tubing Single pivot suspension 150mm travel ISCG05 mount Tapered head tube Collet pivot axle This set up: Kit: R AM Shock: CTD Fork: Rockshox Revelation RL Colors: Gun Black Galaxy Blue
The Heckler name has been part of our brand since 1995, and as such shoulders a substantial burden when it comes to brand reputation. No problem. These days, the Heckler represents no-nonsense single pivot all-mountain performance at a wallet friendly price. Offering 150mm of travel via a burly aluminum frame, the Heckler
features the same angular contact bearings and oversize alloy pivot axles as our VPP® bikes, and has an aggressive contemporary geometry that slays rough and steep terrain with confidence. New for this year there’s an ISCG05 chainguide mount, and a tapered headtube.

NOMAD
Tough aluminum frame 1.5" headtube VPP® suspension 160mm travel Dropper post friendly cable routing ISCG05 mount This set up: Kit: SPX AM Shock: CTD Fork: Fox 36 Float 160 RC2 Kashima Colors: Satin Black Tennis Yellow
We try to avoid category over-analysis and coming up with nifty acronyms. Instead, we build bikes for the needs of the riders we know. And we know a whole lot of people who go on long hard rides to find very burly terrain. That’s the reason for the Nomad. The 160mm of travel, stout aluminum frame with 1.5" headtube,
ISCG05 chainguide mount and 67 degree head angle could lead one to think the Nomad’s a scaled down downhill bike. Meanwhile, the refined and flattened VPP® suspension curve makes the Nomad pedaling performance light and responsive. Simply put, the Nomad defies easy categorization.
On the one hand it’s a downhill sparring partner, and on the other hand an everyday, everywhere, every trail kind of bike.

NOMAD C
Mega-stout, super-light carbon fiber frame 1.5" headtube VPP® suspension 160mm travel 142×12 rear axle Dropper post friendly cable routing ISCG05 mount This set up: Kit: XTR AM ENVE Shock: CTD Adjust Fork: Fox 34 Float 160 Kashima Colors: Matte Carbon Green
Cooking up the Nomad carbon involved a pretty simple recipe: take everything people loved about the Nomad, shake it up and add carbon fiber. The result is a leaner, sleeker, and even more responsive Nomad. Supplanting the aluminum frame with carbon fiber reduced weight by 3/4 of a pound AND increased frame strength
and stiffness dramatically. It is the kind of strength that makes life easy when it comes coping with 5,000 foot rock garden descents, cased gap jumps and drops to flat on a daily basis, or whatever else a true Nomad might encounter in his or her wanderings.

Under the skilled piloting of the Santa Cruz Syndicate riders, the V10 ushered in the dawn of carbon fiber’s rise to prominence in downhill racing. Its carbon fiber frame is lighter, stiffer and substantially stronger than any aluminum counterpart, and is mated with a VPP® suspension that can
be set to either 8.5" or 10" of rear wheel travel. Recessed grease ports, massively oversized axles with locking collet heads and adjustable sealed bearings deliver state of the art suspension performance with the reliability of an ax. The result of all this is a downhill race bike that is a regular
podium performer in the destructive crucible of World Cup racing and also a perfect candidate for the most awesome park bike ever.

HIGHBALL
29” wheels Tough but light hydroformed aluminum frame Choice of fixed or adjustable dropouts Tapered head tube This set up: Kit: R XC Fork: Fox 32 Float CTD 100 Colors: Satin Traffic Blue Pearl White
Taking the swift and light intent of our 29" wheeled carbon Highball and crafting it out of aluminum, we’ve added a couple very notable other features: value and versatility. The proprietary aluminum tubing allows for a strong, respectably light frame, and features the same responsive geometry as our carbon race bike. There are some swank new rear dropouts that allow
riders the option of running a fixed position for geared use, or a pivoting, adjustable dropout for single speed use. Clean lines and super-versatility aside, this is also one of our most affordable bikes, redefining the notion of “bang for your buck”.

HIGHBALL C 29" wheels Lightweight carbon fiber frame Tapered head tube 142×12 rear axle Drop dead gorgeous minimalism
There are still those times and places where the best way to light the fuse and blow everyone else into the weeds is by riding a hardtail. Bigger wheels have revived the venerable double diamond design, and by mixing the smooth rolling hoops with a feathery 2.4-pound carbon fiber frame, we’ve come up with a potent race weapon.
Anyone who complains about a bad day climbing while riding this bike needs to find another sport. The Highball is insanely light, razor sharp, nimble but surefooted, stiff as a plank, and designed to do two things: 1. Race. 2. Win.

CHAMELEON All new hydroformed aluminum frame ISCG05 mount Choice of fixed or adjustable dropouts This set up: Kit: R AM Fork: Fox 32 Float CTD 130 Colors: Tennis Yellow Ultramarine Blue
The world’s most versatile hardtail just got a serious makeover. New hydroformed aluminum tubing eliminates the need for gussets and shaves a pound of weight off the frame without sacrificing any of the legendary toughness the Chameleon is known for. We’ve added ISCG05 mounts and a tapered headtube, and riders can now choose between fixed vertical rear
dropouts for geared use or adjustable swinger-style dropouts for singlespeed setups. The top tube grew a little in length, and the head angle has become a degree slacker. All new, more awesome than ever.

JACKAL Tough frame Low standover Short chainstays Sweet dropouts
This set up: Kit: DJ Fork: Manitou Circus
Jump bikes are thug-simple devices, but at the same time require some clever engineering in order to withstand the abuse that their lives will inevitably be filled with. As such, the Jackal’s 4.8lb aluminum frame is tougher than partial differential equations. It is most at home pumping transitions, popping tricks or styling it out in the air.
The top tube is kept way down low for throwing legs over, and the chainstays are short and stout to keep the rear wheel tucked in right where it needs to be when it comes time to pump or pop. Rear dropouts are adjustable for gears or single speed, and like the rest of the frame are built to withstand a rough life without slip or slop.

CCCP Introduced in the spring of 2012, CCCP stands for Custom Color Choice Program. It is available on our aluminum VPPŽ and hardtail bikes as an optional upgrade. Each CCCP frame is painted to order, one at a time, here in Santa Cruz. We use powdercoat, because it is tough as nails, and environmentally speaking is friendlier than wet paint. Customers can choose between 12 different powdercoat colors, four styles of decal, five colors of decal, and two options for final clear coat—gloss or satin.
Frames are powdercoated, baked, decals are applied, then the final clear coat is sprayed on and the frames are baked again. The result is a personally tailored finish that is not only good looking but is also incredibly tough. To configure any one of the thousands of potential finish combinations, visit our website and click on the CCCP icon, or go to this address:santacruzbicycles. com/builder/bikes. In that menu highlighted with the CCCP logo are the models offered. Select the desired model and go custom!

CARBON FIBER Santa Cruz got started next door to a well-known builder of steel hardtail mountain bike frames. Across the parking lot was a guy named Paul Turner who was making suspension forks that were replacing steel rigid forks, in a little outfit called RockShox. The big idea behind Santa Cruz bikes was to make suspension frames, and to make them out of aluminum—a material that didn’t have a lot of regard in those days. And so it went, first with the eccentric link on the Tazmon, and onto the legendary Heckler, and infamous Super8. That famous brand next door got bought and moved to Wisconsin, and that little suspension outfit moved to Colorado and isn’t so little anymore. We’re still here though, still on the same mission, but now our flagship bikes use carbon fiber. Much like aluminum when we first started, carbon fiber had a reputation that many doubted would work well for “real” mountain bikers wanting a machine that is lightweight, but also durable. We challenge that notion. Carbon fiber isn’t just black metal. The material itself comes in a variety of different stiffnesses, and has uni-directional strength characteristics in each layer. Metals (all of them) have only one stiffness value that comes from the atomic bonds, and are the same strength in every direction. The advantage to carbon fiber is the ability to design a structure that is incredibly strong and stiff where you need it to be, and not to waste any material while achieving
that strength and stiffness, keeping it very light. However, this material versatility comes at the price of complexity. Designing how the various modulus materials are arranged to maximize impact strength and stiffness simultaneously— making sure that it can be repeated while each frame has hundreds of steps to arrange the plies before curing— is expensive and time-consuming, and ultimately too detailed for the minutiae to matter when most people want to ride bikes instead of taking lessons in reinforced polymer construction. The results of our effort can be seen with a cutaway frame, where you can see the entire structure of the frame molded in one piece, with no foam or filler material left behind. The smooth interior is what gives compaction to the layers during curing. There’s a lot that goes into getting that result and we’ve got some closely guarded secrets—which is why you don’t get that same view of the inside for all the frames out there. We don’t use shortcuts—like gluing the headtube end to the other tubes—to cut costs. Having the fibers continue through each joint makes the frame stronger and stiffer and lighter. We don’t have any special acronyms to coyly allude to the superiority of our product, because we haven’t found a way to turn “Painstaking Research, Intensive And Thorough Testing, Rigorous Attention To Detail, Careful And Laborious Fabrication, Constant Evolution And Accrued Applied Knowledge” into anything that looks good on a downtube.

PIVOTS & HARDWARE The number of patents, the engineering hours, and all the suspension trickery on your bike doesn’t matter a damn if you can’t ride it. And there’s rarely a bike shop, a decent mechanic, or the parts you need close by when you need them most. Having your bike get in the way of a ride can crush your soul. The anticipation for the ride, planning around the rest of life’s distractions, wrangling a crew together for a long Saturday mission—it can all unravel with a mechanical failure, and there are few worse feelings than that. The design decisions and the parts that make up your Santa Cruz bike are made and chosen with that in mind. This is why we introduced grease ports and included grease guns for VPP® links—to keep suspension buttery smooth, creak-free, and to provide years of trouble-free performance. The pivot axles put a perfect fit on the bearings for smooth rolling, and then lock into place, keeping everything perfectly adjusted. If the frame ever needs to be disassembled, this can be done in minutes with a few Allen keys, without requiring disassembly of any other components. Additionally, all of the bearings on all our bikes are free for life, for the original owner, should you need more. Compatibility and down the line usability also matters. We believe that using a threaded bottom bracket— one that accepts every crank and chainguide combination— is still cool, and we don’t use post mount disc brakes
because they can limit your choice in rotor size. The bearings used in our suspension pivots are made specifically for our frames with special features, but we use sizes that could be found in a good hardware store—just in case. Pivot bearings are pressed into the two short links that attach the front triangle to the business end, and sit behind a water-and crap-proof pair of lip seals and a labyrinth seal washer. The short links and stubby, solid axles make a stiff connection, without long tubes or flexy pivots next to the rear wheel. One hand and a 6mm Allen is all you need to remove a shock—whether you need to or are just killing dark winter evenings in the man-cave. You’ll find these features on all of our frames. It’s not a fluke, it’s not a fad, it’s what makes sense. Instead of hopping on the bandwagon with special and often limiting ways of mounting custom shocks, cranks or other components, we pick the best components on the market from all sources, and we make sure our frames fit ALL of them. That lets you choose what you want now—and considering that we build frames to last, you might find yourself a few years down the road wanting to replace some worn components. You’ll be able to fit the best then too. Or, should you find yourself in the desert after a long drive and you need a part—you’ve got the best odds of getting it fixed before sun-up the next morning. Nobody deserves to have their soul crushed, after all.

QUALITY We have a tagline that says “Quality Bicycles Since 1994”. Sounds pretty generic really, and it doesn’t seem like it needs much explanation. But the leading adjective in that statement is treated with a lot of respect here. Most companies will tell you that they make quality products, be they washing machines or automobiles; we’re not the first to tout our commitment to making good stuff. Still, being obsessive about mountain bikes, we take our responsibility to those that ride our bikes pretty seriously. If you’ve bought a bike or frame from Santa Cruz in the past, you might have seen a hang-tag with a guy’s face and signature on it attached. That’s your assurance one of our builders personally ensured your bike was checked out thoroughly before it was shipped. The whole story goes a lot further back than that final hang tag, however. Starting with the initial design on the engineer’s computer screen, nothing gets finalized without thinking about how it’s going to be done right, every time, and how we will check each frame to make sure it does. There’s a simple rule: if you can’t measure it, you can’t make it. Sounds basic, but when you get into swoopy shapes, tight clearances between components and a bunch of moving parts, well, it’s not always so simple. A whole lot of measuring and checking has to happen before one of our bikes gets anywhere close to your garage. This goes beyond the standard fare of checking frame alignment, bearing bores, headtube press fit tolerances, BB threads, the seat tube ream, et cetera.
Take one our carbon frames, for instance. After the carbon plies have been laid-up, but before curing, the front triangle (which is still just made of pliable sheets of carbon fiber) is weighed and compared with a tolerance to make sure no single carbon ply was omitted. The circumference of the tubes is measured in more than 20 places, to ascertain all the plies are in the correct location. Everything has to be in tolerance to proceed to the next step. After curing, there are checks to make sure the internal bladders held pressure during the cure so the plies are compacted properly, and another weigh-in is done to ensure the final resin content is right. The front triangle is machined and the bores checked for size and location. This “step-check” process continues, with each check for each frame written down and signed off. Your serial number has all of that information behind it. From the date the material was made, cut, laid-up, including who performed each step, and who checked each step. When the frame is declared “ready to ship”, we have SCB employees who check every single front triangle and swingarm before it leaves the factory to come to Santa Cruz. These guys are the ones that put the little stickers on that say “SCB OK”. When the frames get to Santa Cruz, our frame assemblers put things together, and do a final inspection— and add their name to it. This final inspector puts his name, and face, on your bike so you know we checked, and rechecked, and checked it again. Quality in build, quality in ride. This matters.

VPP
®
In glaring contrast to our disdain of acronyms, the letters VPP® can be found on our flagship suspension bikes— ranging from vehicles capable of crushing backcountry loops to enduro racing and frequenting podiums at the world’s nastiest downhill tracks. It stands for Virtual Pivot Point, which doesn’t do much in the way of explanation on its own, so here’s a bit of back story and a quick description of what those letters mean for you and your bike: By the end of the 1990s, Santa Cruz offered a complete line of suspension bikes that were based around a simple single pivot. The shock was attached directly to the swingarm, and was compressed when the swingarm pivoted from the rear wheel being compressed. Those bikes ranged from the 100mm travel Superlight, a versatile machine still in our line-up, all the way to the legendary Super8, a 200mm travel, free-ride trailblazer. The single pivot system has some versatility, but when stretched to the extremes of light weight and long travel, issues with chassis flex and pedal kickback started to show up. Not being satisfied with compromise on any level, we started looking for a way around those issues using a new system, and in 2000 ended up with a set of patents that covered a variety of methods ranging from s-shaped axle paths to eccentric links to more complex mechanical characteristics that require some knowledge of calculus to decipher. But the core of this package of technology we refer to as VPP® consists of two short links that rotate in opposite directions. You won’t find that on anything but VPP®, and it is this
unique attribute that allows enough adaptation to fit any configuration we’ve been able to dream up in the last 13 years. The counter-rotation causes the two links to rotate at different speeds as the wheel goes through its travel—in contrast to other mechanisms. In other words, as the wheel moves at one speed, the links are moving slowly, then more quickly, then more slowly, or any combination that is desired. Depending on which link the shock is connected to, the shock rate can be changed from a taut XC rocket to boulder-gobbling DH monster. The shock rate change gives our trail bikes the feeling that there is more travel than their counterparts, while giving the suspension designers the ability to tune how the bike feels when you are hammering on the pedals (also known as anti-squat behavior) to suit different riding styles, wheel size and drive-train configurations. In addition to all of that flexibility with the suspension behavior, the two short links, combined with the simple and reliable collet pivot axles give the rear wheel a solid connection to the front, so the bike tracks through corners predictably, and stays on line when pinging off rocks. It’s a fundamentally ideal architecture for stiff and light construction without having to use non-standard shocks or compromising frame geometry. The level of refinement on the VPP® suspension you see in this catalog is something we have been working toward every day of the last thirteen years. Every new bike is an opportunity to try new variations and fine-tune a bike to fit an exact balance. The cutting edge sharpens.

ABOUT THIS CATALOG Most of the bike action shots in this catalog feature our own employees. We are proud of how willing everyone here is to bust ass and get the job done on a day to day basis, but we’re even more proud of the fact that so many of the people who work here are also bona fide hammers on the bike. So we wanted to acknowledge that in the big spread images found here.
These images were shot in and around Northern California’s Lakes Basin, up in the Sierras between the mountain biking motherlode towns of Downieville and Graeagle. The trails are rugged and challenging, the views are staggering, the air is clear, and the swimming holes are world class. We are the longstanding title sponsor of the Downieville Classic, and the nonprofit Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (the group responsible for the restoration, care and enhancement

of the trails in this area) is one of our largest community involvements. While we live and work and ride in Santa Cruz, and are happy to call that place home, we hold this chunky granite paradise in the mountains near and dear. This is where we come to test product, to race bikes, to volunteer time and dig in the dirt, to recharge our psychic and spiritual batteries. This is family to us.
