Save Baby Teeth in varying concentrations. One of the most well-understood and widely researched type of stem cells is the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC).
Just like learning to ride a bike or learning to write their name – losing a tooth is a big milestone for kids. Many parents like to save their children’s teeth as a keepsake. Now you can save those teeth for a future use. Researchers are shedding light on dental stem cell banking -- a secure way to store the stem cells in your child’s baby teeth, wisdom teeth or healthy extracted teeth to possibly be used to help fight serious conditions such as damaged heart or brain tissues, bone injuries, or even Type 1 Diabetes. Stem cells in our bodies are able to repair or replace damaged tissue. Different types of stem cells exist in different body tissues and
Mesenchymal stem cells can form tissues such as bone, nerve, muscle, and blood vessels. They also help the body to repair itself, and they play an important role in healing by suppressing inflammation. A common misconception has arisen which equates cord blood or bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells to MSC. It should be noted that the tissue repair and development properties of MSC are not present in hematopoietic stem cells which serve to replace the cells of the blood. Though located in a number of places throughout the body, MSC can be found in especially high concentrations in the healthy dental pulp of teeth. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) report that the stem cells in teeth can be “directed” to grow into an array of cell types, including heart, brain, nerve, cartilage, bone, liver and insulin producing pancreatic beta cells. Due to MSC’s tremendous potential to heal the body, researchers around the world are currently engaged in over 350 (www.clinicaltrials.gov) different clinical trials using MSC in order to develop future regenerative treatments for a
variety of serious diseases such as Type 1 diabetes, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Leukemia, as well as spinal cord injury, corneal damage, brain injuries, heart disease, periodontal disease and a variety of sports injuries. Once a child loses a tooth it is sent to a cryopreservation facility where it will be processed and maintained until needed. The dental pulp has to have an adequate blood supply at the time of extraction and be transferred to the processing lab within 48 hours to maximize viability prior to cryopreservation. That is why dental stem cell banking companies, such as Store-A-Tooth, provide a storage container and preservation solution that you can have on hand. Once the tooth is extracted it is shipped overnight to the lab. Freezing cells in a youthful state preserves their future ability to generate replacement tissue and heal the body. “The younger teeth have characteristics that seem to give them more potential than other adult stem cells,” says Dr. Peter Verlander with Provia Laboratories. He says storing tooth stem cells could help shape the future of medicine. "Just like antibiotics revolutionized medicine, I think that we are coming to the point where regenerative technologies will also revolutionize medicine and change our lives." When compared to the cost of cord blood banking, dental stem cell banking tends to be more affordable and requires as few as one to two teeth. So the next time your child loses a tooth, remember – that little pearl could one day save his or her life.

Sensory Processing 101 by Sarah Lyons A typical morning in my home begins with the words “My clothes hurt me. They are too loose. I need new clothes.” As a result, I begin the search for the “right” clothes for my 4 year old daughter. After much time, many tears, lots of tight hugs, and a good dose of frustration, she begins her day in the same dress she wore the day prior and many days prior to that. The process of getting dressed, which seems simple to most, is the biggest challenge my child faces on a daily basis. This situation is one example of what living with a child with Sensory Processing Disorder is like. “Imagine being in an environment where the noise around you is amplified to the highest level, the temperature is the coldest or hottest you have ever felt, you are wearing the most uncomfortable clothing that has ever touched your skin, and you are nauseated by a repulsive smell. All at the same time. What would be your response? Most would quickly escape the situation.” says Dana Lyons, Occupational Therapist at Boulder City Hospital. “These are examples of what a child with Sensory Processing Disorder feels, but they cannot escape the symptoms. As a result, these children may respond with anger, frustration, or ultimately avoid situations which may cause a breakdown.” Sensory Processing is a term that refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses. (www.spdfoundation.net). “Everyone processes sensory input, but some people process it differently than others.” says Occupational Therapist, Carrie Grosdidier, Occupational Therapist. “When the processing of this information interferes with our ability to function on a day to day basis is when we have a problem.” Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) can be hard to diagnose because it affects each person differently. “Any of the five senses can be affected by being hypersensitive (overstimulated) or by being hyposensitive (under simulated).” says Lyons.
6
A hypersensitive response to
Parenting Plus • November 2016
sensory input may include: • Distracted by noises that sound normal to others (flushing toilets, clanking silverware) • Fear of surprise touch or avoid hugs • Avoids swings and playground equipment that others enjoy • Has poor balance, falls often A hyposensitive response to sensory input may include: • A constant need to touch people or textures • An extremely high tolerance to pain • May often harm other children and/or pets when playing, doesn’t understand own strength • Fidgety and unable to sit still, enjoys movement based play such as spinning, jumping, swinging, etc. • Seems to be a “thrill seeker” and can be dangerous at times (www.brainbalancenters.com) Children can have one or many of these characteristics as well as some from each category and in varying degrees of severity. “Unfortunately, these responses are viewed by others as children behaving badly when in fact they are not.” Lyons says. “The most important thing to understand is that children with SPD are not “bad” children. They are simply trying to survive in their own skin, in a world with heightened or lowered sensations. Typical punishment for “bad” behavior is not optimal and can cause regression rather than
progression.” Stephanie Beaudry, mom of two children with SPD, says “When trying to explain my son’s hyperactivity or clumsiness is due to SPD, we get told ‘Oh it’s just his age’ but it’s actually because his nervous system doesn’t respond as it should in certain situations.” SPD may cause motor clumsiness, behavioral problems, anxiety, depression, or other impacts if not treated effectivity. (www. spdfoundation.net) Sensory Processing does create challenges for families, but there is treatment available for kids who struggle with it. “We had a fabulous Occupational Therapist that helped my son. She gave us tools and gave him permission to figure out what worked for him and what didn’t.” says Joy Alsup, mom of four. “He has a high need for tight, long hugs and we understand that this is what helps him. It’s a huge priority for us.” With the help of an Occupational Therapist
www.parentingplus.com
kids with SPD can find tools that help them balance sensory input. Activities may include swinging, wearing a weighted vest, pushing or pulling heavy objects across the room, or jumping on a trampoline. Many of these activities are fun for the child and can be integrated into playtime at home. (www. sensorysmarts.com) “The therapy helps more than just their physical strengths but also their emotional strengths.” says Beaudry. “When my daughter first started therapy, she was extremely shy. She wouldn’t even talk to children her own age when they approached her. Now, four months later, she is a social butterfly.” An occupational therapist’s main goal is to educate parents about SPD and give families tools they can use to help the child progress at home. Although families that deal with SPD may have struggles with things other people see as “normal” activities, many parents find hope in their child’s progress and support from other parents dealing with this disorder. “One thing I have learned after experiencing our journey is that I am not alone. There are so many others that understand what I am going through and we are there to support each other in many ways.” says Beaudry. As a mother of a child with Sensory Processing Disorder myself, I would encourage others to educate themselves about SPD and begin to approach the situation from the child’s perspective. Parents can then begin to use the tools needed to adjust their environment and celebrate as their child meets their goals and overcome challenges.
Cognitive Training Can Change Your Child’s Brain! Many parents are surprised to learn that their child’s IQ score can actually be increased. We were raised to believe that IQ was stagnant – that you are born with the IQ you’ll have throughout life. But brain researchers discovered that the brain is actually capable of changing and regrowing the connections between brain cells. It’s these connections, or synapses, that actually magnify the brain’s powers by increasing the number of viable paths for information. More paths also mean faster routes for information to travel. This is good news for everyone – but especially for children with learning issues like ADD and dyslexia – because scientists have used special brain imaging technology to prove that better learners use more direct routes from point A to B when processing information. But how does a child learn to use the shorter, faster route? With cognitive training! Cognitive training is different from tutoring, which focuses on specific academic subjects, such as math, English or history. While tutoring has its place (such as when a child falls behind in a particular subject due to
an illness, injury or school transfer), it does not serve to increase the brain’s ability to learn in general. Cognitive training can improve cognitive skills: memory, auditory & visual processing, processing speed, focus & attention, and logic & reasoning. Cognitive skills are the essential, but often overlooked fundamental tools of effective learning. They are the mental mechanisms that process incoming information. More specifically, cognitive skills enable children to successfully: focus, think, prioritize, plan, understand, visualize, remember, create useful associations, and solve problems. Using intensive, one-on-one training, children of all learning levels can raise their IQ scores by improving their cognitive skill set. IQ doesn’t have to be a stagnant number. Raising your child’s IQ is simply a matter of increasing cognitive skills. Cognitive training can make a big difference for your child! Liz Knowles, Ed.D. www.cognitive-fitness.com cognitiveadvantage@gmail.com
Joy Alsup says “When my son was diagnosed, I felt like he would be limited in his future. He has worked through many of his issues and I see his SPD as part of what makes him unique. I wouldn’t have him any other way.” It takes a lot of patience, persistence, and love to parent a child with SPD, but when a child feels acceptance and supported, they can work through their struggles, and thrive in school and at home. Sarah Lyons is a wife and mother of six. The inspiration for this article came from her daughter, Grace, who was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder in 2014. She writes from her home in suburban Kansas City.

Are Music Lessons Worth the Cost? Does your child love to sing? Love plunking on the piano or pounding on the drum? Do you think you might have a future musician in your home? The average cost of private music lessons ranges from $15-40 per half hour (www.takelessons.com). Keep in mind the cost will vary depending on location and the expertise of teacher. With these numbers, private lessons cost parents $1,000 to $2,000 a year. This may make you wonder, are music lessons really worth it? Let’s look at some short and long term benefits of music lessons.
Discipline Learning to play beautiful music doesn’t happen overnight. All students must start from the beginning playing scales and mastering basic skills. In our society instant gratification is the norm. Music teaches the value of patience and discipline because children must set aside time for practice and make it part of their routine in order to further their skills.
Work ethic Music teaches children a good work ethic because they see the value of practice as they improve and reach new achievements. Students will learn how to dedication creates good results, while failing to do all the necessary practice results in mediocre results. These lessons carry into school studies and future employment.
Memory Is your child always forgetting things? Music requires kids to practice memorization. Even if sheet music is used, students memorize how to play each note and the sheet music eventually becomes a guide. Students can use their developing memorization skills in a variety of ways in school and at home. Math and language skills Music helps develop math and language skills that give kids an edge in school. “Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music.” (National Association for Music Education)

Teamwork Teamwork isn’t just for sports. Music students may have an opportunity to participate in a band or orchestra. This provides kids experience working as a team and a sense of camaraderie. Teamwork develops social skills that they will use for a lifetime.
Confidence and social development Kids will gain confidence as they begin to perform music for an audience. This helps kids learn to face their fears and builds self esteem. As kids build up this confidence, they are more likely to boost their communication skills and have increased social development.
Lifelong Challenge In music, there is always room for improvement. This creates the opportunity for students of any age to improve and challenge themselves for many years to come.
Stress Relief Playing an instrument can be an outlet for kids. Music can be relaxing and a form of stress relief, as well as a way to express yourself creatively. Kids who have this outlet are less likely to find negative ways to relieve stress, like drugs and alcohol.
By Sarah Lyons
Improved Coordination Kids who play instruments develop their hand-eye coordination. Just like in sports, playing an instrument requires these skills and develops their motor skills.
Higher Test Scores Studies show that children who are exposed to music education have higher SAT scores and better grades in school overall. (Children’s Music Workshop) Introduces children to other cultures Through music kids are exposed to other cultures, teaching them awareness and empathy for others. This helps them become more accepting of other cultures at an early age. My daughter recently started taking piano lessons. As I sat in the room observing her first lesson, I witnessed something. As she played her first chord, a smile spread across her face. It was clear she has a true love for music. To me, this makes the cost of lessons worth it. Each family will have to weigh the overall price of music lessons against their child’s enjoyment of music and the many benefits to make a decision whether music lessons are truly worth the cost.
Expression and Creativity Kids who play music are trained to think creatively. The ability to think outside of the box in many other situations is a coveted asset among many employers.

Reasonable Moms A new study reports that people feel that being a parent is more stressful than ever before. Today’s competitive parenting culture is making parenting harder, joyless, exhausting, and much more nervewracking than it needs to be. Today, the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) launched Reasonable Moms, an educational project with fact sheets, podcasts, and commentary, to bring commonsense back into parenting. IWF hopes to create a new, supportive category of parenting with less anxiety, mom-shaming and judgment.
Moms should understand that there’s a thriving industry out there built on making them feel inadequate.
“IWF created this project to be a voice of reason for parents. We want to give women the information they need to reject these damaging and counterproductive parenting trends. Moms should understand that there’s a thriving industry out there built on making them feel inadequate. We want to encourage women to trust their instincts, and remind them that it’s okay to make mistakes, just do the best you can with the resources and time you have,” said
Julie Gunlock, director of the Culture of Alarmism project at the Independent Women’s Forum and mother of three young boys. Reasonable Moms can guiltlessly take short cuts to feed their children, while still trying to make nutritious choices. Reasonable Moms don’t believe the alarmist nonsense that everything their child eats, drinks, wears, looks at or brushes up against is going to kill them. Reasonable Moms find parenting exhausting, entertaining, frustrating and rewarding all at once. And they take time for themselves and recognize that their children need space too.
Reasonable Moms reject the competitive-parenting culture, preferring instead to do what needs to be done to meet the demands of the day.

Beat Post-Partum Depression with Physical Fitness! by Nicole Link Meet Krystal Monisera, 29, a Jupiter, Florida mom who navigated her way out of a severe post-partum abyss through physical fitness. Right after Krystal’s second child was born, the young mother of two recalls that a “scary” depression began to overtake her. Knowing that depression ran in her family and unsure of her next steps, Krystal was fortunate to discover weight training and physical fitness, which she says “jolted me out of the fog of post-partum depression.” Now she wants to spread the message to other new moms experiencing the baby blues and significant post-partum depression. “I was lucky because some of my girlfriends who were also new moms suggested we all get into physical fitness and begin working out together as a group.” Krystal claims that if it hadn’t been for her friends pushing her to join them in the gym, she doesn’t know what would have become of her emotional state at that time. The women began a CrossFit regimen and Krystal noticed that her depression began to lift, sans any medical intervention.
In describing her depression shortly after giving birth, Krystal expresses: “After having my 2nd beautiful baby, looking in the mirror was hard. I was overweight with no baby growing inside of me to give me an excuse for why I was so big. I would have this overwhelming feeling of tears building up inside and it scared me.Your body goes numb and this sadness takes over. My mother suffered with depression, and at that moment I felt what my mom went through. I never told anyone how I felt. I kept the feelings to myself and always rocked a smile, but inside I was drowning.” Though Krystal was no stranger to athletics (she has been a competitive tennis player since her early teens), it was while working with a personal trainer for CrossFit that Krystal says “I fell in love with the whole personal training side of things.” She realized that she would use her own experiences to help other women, particularly new moms, to overcome depression through fitness. Krystal was inspired to get certified as a
personal trainer through National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Since becoming certified, she has made it her mission to help people “take back their lives.” The passion she sees in her clients fuels her fire to continue helping those who want a transformation, inside and out. Through her company, Total Fusion Fitness (TotalFusionFit.com) Krystal’s specialty is athletic weight/full body training, with certification in: • • •

Krystal’s Quick Fitness Tips for New Moms: Exercise releases endorphins, so put the horse before the cart! Workout even if you’re not feeling up to it.You need the endorphins to feel good. Staying indoors and sedentary until you’re feeling happy is a mistake. The tummy is a huge concern for new moms. Planks, leg raises and Russian twists help tighten lower abs, reduce tummy fat and make you sweat, and they can be done at home with no weights. Working out your legs and booty will help reshape your body after childbirth, and will give you a confidence boost in clothes.

Seven Steps to More Helpful Children
I watched out my friend’s window as her 12-year-old chopped wood in the back yard. I wasn’t sure which was more amazing, that he was helping without having been asked or that my friend was allowing her son to use an axe, seemingly with no undue anxiety on her part. He entered the house, taking off boots and gloves before shoving a couple of logs into the woodstove.
Why was her child taking on such grown up tasks when I could barely get mine to clean their rooms? “She must need the help” my own father casually responded when I described the scene to him later that evening. I needed the help too, I decided, and would figure out how to get it. After many years of careful study, I now have a teenager who takes out the garbage without being asked and a four year old who is almost solely responsible for the feeding of our cat. It’s easy for household chores to drop off our busy to do lists when everything from homework to swim team to piano lessons battle for our family’s limited time. However, even if we think that getting the child to do the housework will be harder than doing it ourselves, household chores can be just as beneficial as any extracurricular activity for our children’s social and emotional growth. Experts agree that household chores can give children confidence and self-discipline, encouraging children to see themselves as an indispensible part of the family. Luckily even a child as young as two or three years old can begin simple chores. Here are some tips I’ve found helpful along the way:
1) Give your child choices Children like feeling as if they have choices. If they are able to choose from a variety of chores, they are more likely to accomplish the chores happily. One child may prefer emptying
14
the dishwasher while another enjoys setting the table. Compliance is more likely if a child’s preferences can be honored.
2) Make sure chores are appropriate to the child’s age Even toddlers and preschoolers can help set or clear the table, feed pets, sort silverware out of the dishwasher, put toys away, put laundry in the hamper, or even run a Swiffer duster around the living room. Giving children chores that they can complete themselves helps with feelings of confidence and gives them a sense of accomplishment.
3) On the other hand… Doing chores together can make them more enjoyable. Preschool age children often respond well to a simple clean up song. Some chores, such as unloading the dishwasher easily lend themselves to cooperation and they get done faster too!
4) Try a visual reminder Just as adults take satisfaction in checking off a to-do list, a chart on the fridge can help children track their accomplishments. If the child is too young to read, draw a small picture or use clip art to represent the chore in a concrete way. Clothespins or Velcro can be helpful in making the chart interactive.
5) Teach, and then check for understanding Model the chore for your child and then make sure he or she has understood. Having them show you how they will do the chore ensures that they paid attention to instructions and that you can trust them to do the chore independently.
6) Offer an allowance. Or not.
While everyone agrees that chores are a great help in raising productive, responsible children, the verdict is still out on whether or not an allowance is necessary or helpful. Many experts seem to condone an allowance. Others condemn one. Of course, there are benefits both ways. Choosing to provide an allowance means that children can learn to manage money at an early age and of course provides additional motivation. Others feel strongly that children should help the family without financial reward.
7) Have a back up plan If you choose not to offer an allowance, it may help to have some other motivation. The words “as soon as” can be almost magical in getting children to lend a hand. “As soon as you finish your chores you can play Minecraft or watch TV.” “As soon as you’re done with your chores we’ll be able to go see your friends.” “As soon as your chores are finished, I’ll be ready to start making those cookies we were talking about.” The use of “as soon as” puts the responsibility for doing chores in the child’s own control, even as it makes him or her realize that Mom or Dad is running the show. In these scenarios, the parent doesn’t really care whether or not the child gets to watch TV or eat cookies. If the child wants to play Minecraft, she will get her bed made. If he wants to go see his friends, he will vacuum the living room. And if not, the child knows that the blame is his or hers alone. Whether your children are toddlers or teenagers, these tips can help transform household chores from a battleground to a regularly scheduled part of the day. Clean eating, Simple FlavorS A
fter the heft of the holidays, easing into the new year with clean, simple eating holds great appeal. From the first taste of last fall’s deep harvest spices thru Christmastime’s overwhelming bounty of aromas and delights, comes a desire for quick and uncomplicated eats. Cue: popcorn. Popcorn is a simple yet satisfying whole grain. By itself, popcorn is delicious and unpretentious. And while it’s tough to eat just a handful, the fact that popcorn is naturally low in fat and calories makes it a great choice when trying to lose holiday weight. The fiber in popcorn makes you feel fuller longer, which helps curb hunger. Eating a little more here means you’ll eat a little less elsewhere. A quick stovetop pop will fill any craving, but if you’re looking to add a bit more flavor—again, simple and uncomplicated— try this recipe from the Popcorn Board (www.popcorn.org). Here the rosemary rises in harmony with a dash of Parmesan cheese without overpowering the senses. Add more or less according to taste. And for mere pennies per serving, popcorn is kind on your wallet too. Another post holiday relief.

aby, it’s cold outside and that means games galore during chilly winter months. There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to heat up the home. Game night helps you hone skills and teaches you to how to compete with grace and sportsmanship. Most importantly, it pulls family members away from the solitary world of technology we’ve become accustomed to and brings everyone together, if even for the night. Whether you’re having a dance revolution, war of the words, sinking battleships, or battling it out on a board game, make sure you’ve got plenty of party mix to fuel your fun. Try this Sweet and Salty Popcorn Party Mix, which offers a little bit of something for everyone. The mix combines some healthful whole grains (popcorn chief among them)

200,000 Children Are Back in School. It’s time to remind your children about the rules of the road. Whether walking or riding a bike to school, children should remember to: • Always wear a bicycle helmet. Helmets can reduce the risk of severe head injuries by 88 percent. • Always ride on the right side of the road, with traffic. • Minimize distractions. Pay attention to surroundings - take off headphones and put down phones. This is especially important when crossing the street or in parking lots. • Make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of a car. Learn more: WhatIfPBC.org
