Now, I am pleased to introduce Maria Heege, President & CEO, United Way of Greater Stark County. [MARIA SLIDE] Thank you all for joining with us this great morning. This is an exciting time in Stark County. Last year, the board approved our Strategic Plan, which paves the road for our new approach, called Community Impact. We are collaborative community problem-solver, leveraging donor dollars and community resources to create strategic solutions. Of course, through your support, we have always been a “results oriented” organization that changes lives every day. We continue our long-time tradition of being your partner in building a stronger community. Moving forward, your United Way is committed to strategic investments with long-term results. With help from our volunteers, we have identified six Bold Community Impact Goals for the year 2020. Today, I am going to share those goals with you. [EDUCATION BLOCK] Under our Education Building Block, we envision a community that supports and enables all students to reach age appropriate milestones leading to graduation and careers. We want to Prepare Greater Stark County children, youth and young adults to succeed in school and life. [EDUCATION GOALS WITH CURTAIN] •
Our EDUCATION Goals are to fund, partner and collaborate in programs and services that (1) encourage sustainable progress toward 100% of eligible students being kindergarten-ready and (2) stimulate sustainable progress toward 100% high school graduation rate. We know that children who are prepared for kindergarten are more likely to succeed. We are partnering with many other organizations and programs in the community to make sure young children and older youth do not have to take grown up problems to school, allowing them to focus their attention on their education.
[INCOME BLOCK] Under our INCOME Building Block, we envision a community where a cycle for financial success exists, allowing individuals and families access to build long-term, economic independence. We will look at programs that improve opportunities for Greater Stark County’s residents to make informed decisions, which promote long-term sustainability 401 Market Ave. North Suite 300 Canton, Ohio 44702 www.uwstark.org

[INCOME GOAL WITH CURTAIN] • Our GOAL for the building block of INCOME is a community where 70% of Stark County residents will spend no more than 30% of their income on housing. Right now we know that nearly 50 percent of renters are spending more than 30 percent of their income on rent. This causes financial hardship and hinders their ability to save or plan for a rainy day. [HEALTH BLOCK] Under the Building Block of HEALTH, we envision a community where all residents have access to programs and services that improve the overall health of Greater Stark County. We have three goals under the HEALTH building block [HEALTH GOALS WITH CURTAIN] •
Increase the number of Stark County residents reporting that they are healthy
•
Reduce infant mortality to meet or exceed the Healthy People 2020 Objective and reduce the disparity across races
•
Reduce opiate substance abuse
Ohio has one of the highest infant mortality rates, and unfortunately, Stark County has one of the highest rates in the state. The opiate epidemic continues to grow and sadly we continue to see victims of this addiction and their families suffer tragedy. This community is a great community and we want to see everyone live long successful lives. In your bags, you all have been given a copy of the goals. I hope you share them with your family, friends and coworkers. Let us start the conversations today and continue to BUILD A STRONGER COMMUNITY! [LEGO SLIDE] Speaking of building….You also have in your bags a flier for our LEGO Project for our upcoming Make a Difference Day, which will be held October 24. We will be collecting LEGO blocks, which will be packaged in recycled tennis ball cans and given to local children in need. Let’s continue to inspire our children to build their dreams. Finally, I want to announce the winner of our Caring Club Challenge. At our Annual Meeting in March, I announced this contest to attract new businesses for our Caring Club Card. The winner is…(I’ll get you this tomorrow when I get into work unless you are reading this on Wednesday, then I’ll get it today.) 401 Market Ave. North Suite 300 Canton, Ohio 44702 www.uwstark.org

Thank you again for being a part of our Campaign Kickoff. Now, I am pleased to introduce our 2015 Campaign Chairman-Bill Shivers from Huntington Bank, which is the 2015 sponsor of Day of Caring. [BILL SHIVERS SLIDE] Bill Shivers Thank you, Maria! --- I am honored to lead the 2015 Annual Campaign. As always the needs are great. But we are here to begin breaking the cycle of poverty. • More than 30,000 students in Stark County are living in poverty. Those students collectively fill Mount Union Stadium, Paul Brown Tiger Stadium and half of Tom Benson Stadium. That is an amazing statistic. But we are here to turn obstacles in opportunities. We saw Marcellus and Isaiah in the video. They are an inspiration for our community. United Way will continue to partner, collaborate and fund programs and services that offer opportunity and hope for those who need it most in Greater Stark County. I am so excited to be a part of that movement. Without further ado, let’s get to the goal. With support of the United Way board of directors, I am pleased to announce: this year’s United Way fundraising goal is $6.8 million!!!! [applause] I encourage you to spread the word. BE the ONE. I know many of you are heading out to participate in one of today’s education-focused Day of Caring projects. Thank you for your support and hard work. It takes many to build a strong community. Today it begins with ONE. ###
