YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS

Provided by the Billings Parks, Recreation and Preservation Foundation The Billings Parks, Recreation and Preservation Foundation is offering scholarships for children to enroll in activities. Scholarships are limited and will be made available on a first come, first served basis to qualifying applicants. The purpose of the program is to assist families that cannot normally afford sporting, cultural or enrichment type activities for their children due to economic hardships. This fund is made possible through the generous support of the Parks, Recreation and Preservation Foundation. Scholarship Applications must be picked up in person and are available at the Parks and Recreation office. Our THANKS to the Foundation and the Magic City Blues Festival for supporting Parks & Recreation and our city’s youth! Youth Sports GIRLS 4TH, 5TH & 6TH GRADE BASKETBALL Girls 4th, 5th & 6th Grade Basketball starts on January 20th at Arrowhead, Eagle Cliffs, and Highland. Practice at Newman will start on January 21st. This program is designed to develop skills, build self-confidence, emphasize teamwork, and minimize anxiety of competition. The Recreational Division practices evenings from 5:45pm - 7:15pm and the Competitive Division practices from 7:15pm - 8:45pm. Players may choose either division based on their ability and size. Games will be played on Saturdays for 5 weeks starting on February 20th at area middle schools. GIRLS 4TH,5TH & 6TH GRADE VOLLEYBALL Girls 4th,5th & 6th Grade Volleyball will start on March 30th at Poly Drive and March 31st at Big Sky and Sandstone. Youth Sports TAG & TUMBLE This active class provides instruction in basic tumbling and gymnastic skills. Participants will utilize activities such as circuit style warmups, play parachute, ball and Hula Hoop skills and other fun games. These class activities are geared to improve strength, flexibility, balance and special awareness in children and young adolescents.

MINI VALUABLE PLAYER (MVP) The MVP program provides participants ages 2-5 with opportunities for free play and structured play in a group setting. Instructors provide an environment for fun and interactive games that will help your child’s development of motor skills, social skills, and decision making skills. Adult Sports SPIKEBALL

Spikeball is one of the fastest growing sports across the country. Spikeball mixes together components of volleyball and four-square played in a 2v2 fashion. Once the serve is hit against the circular net near the ground, it bounces back up and the game is on. Teams have three hits to hit the ball back against the net, no player can hit the ball twice in a row. The trampoline acts the same as the net in volleyball. After the serve, players can run 360째 around the net as there are no boundaries. Hard hits and drop shots are encouraged. Come play the game that everyone is talking about!

DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT Come dodge, duck, dip, dive, & dodge this year in Billings Parks & Recreation's Dodgeball Tournament. This friendly competition will be played 5 on 5 with 8 dodgeballs at North Park Center (6th Ave. N. & N. 19th St.). Parks and Recreation will host an Adult Coed Tournament and a High School Coed Tournament. There must be a minimum of 2 females per teams. Space is limited so sign up now! Adult Sports ADULT SOCCER Come enjoy the Spring weather by playing in our Adult Soccer League. Men’s, Women’s, and Coed Leagues will Start April 3rd. Deadline to register your team is Friday, March 25th. The team fee includes 7 regular season games. A pre-season Captains meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 31st at 6:00pm at the Parks, Recreation and Public Lands offices (390 N. 23rd St).

Adult Sports OUTDOOR BROOMBALL TOURNAMENT Come join us at Veterans Park for a day on the ice and an old fashioned tournament of Broom Ball! Billings Parks and Recreation will be hosting a one day Broomball tournament consisting of games played 5 versus 5. We will supply the equipment but feel free to make and bring your own broomball sticks. The Veterans Park crafthouse will be open for teams that are not playing to stay warm and watch the action. Helmets are encouraged. Register your team by January 15th. We will host an Adult Coed Tournament and a High school Girls Tournament. Spiking, diving, and high-fiving is encouraged! Adult Fitness ARTHRITIS EXERCISE For many people with arthritis, the idea of exercise is unappealing and may even sound painful. This Arthritis Foundation exercise program is designed to decrease the pain associated with arthritis. The program features range of motion, endurance building, and relaxation exercise coupled with health education discussions. All components are designed to meet the abilities of participants. Special Interest AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTER TRAINING A Fun fast paced course with hands-on activities, exciting videos, role-plays, and lively discussions. Learn to be the best babysitter, while gaining the confidence to make smart decisions and stay safe in any babysitting situation. Adult Fitness MARTIAL ARTS These classes teach a martial arts discipline called Tae-Kwon-Do with Hapkido & Judo incorporated in our classes. Tae-Kwon-Do is a Korean variation of Karate and will include foot and hand techniques, forms and sparring. Hapkido is a set of nonaggressive techniques using joint locks and twists ideal for self defense. Judo and Jiu-Jitsu is a Japanese discipline that involves the entire body and mind. Special Interest POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS This is an educational series, offered in conjunction with MSU Extension Service, which is designed to provide caregivers with the tools they need to care for themselves. This program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, convey feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources. Two experienced Class Leaders conduct the series. Interactive lessons, discussions and brain storming will help caregivers learn the tools and put them into action in their life. AMERICAN RED CROSS CPR CERTIFICATION Are you or your organization interested in group CPR/First Aid Certification Courses? The Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program trains participants to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive. The program provides a two year certification with free digital refreshers. Choice of free digital or affordable print materials. DESERT MOUNTAIN MEDICINE WILDERNESS FIRST AID This course, taught by Desert Mountain Medicine (DMM), is a great introduction to wilderness medicine and basic life support skills. It is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast who wants more than an urban first aid course provides. The emphasis of the class is on recognizing and treating lifethreatening traumatic and medical emergencies, common wilderness injuries, bandaging and splinting, and environmental injuries. American Heart Association CPR is included in the curriculum. Desert Mountain Medicine is an industry leader in Wilderness Medicine and follows the curriculum suggested by the Wilderness Medical Society. DMM is a member of the Professional Outdoor Medical Educators (POME) and has reciprocity with all the leading wilderness medical instruction agencies. WINTER SURVIVAL CLASS Winter in Montana can be an unforgiving time of year that requires a unique set of outdoor survival skills. This class is an interactive survival scenario designed to teach you winter survival priorities, tips, strategies, techniques, and how to make basic snow shelters. Aquatics LIFEGUARD CERTIFICIATION Interested in becoming a Lifeguard? The Lifeguard certification course provides participants with the knowledge and life-saving skills to be a successful Lifeguard. Volunteer Programs AMEND PARK COMMUNITY GARDEN It’s never too late to start thinking about your garden. Come join us in the Amend Park Community Garden’s 3rd year. In 2015, the community garden produced 2,000 lbs of produce and was recognized by the Montana Trails, Recreation and Parks Association with a citation of Merit for Agency Excellence. Not an experienced Gardener? At the garden, we provide classes, workshops, and mentors to make sure all skill levels are successful. The garden is a great place to get involved in your community, spend time with family, and make new friends! The Amend Park Community Garden has 45 plots ranging from 10ft x 10ft to 20ft x 20ft in size. We will begin accepting new applications for the 2016 growing season after March 1st. VOLUNTEER PARK RANGER PROGRAM Come be a part of a team of Park Rangers who are passionate about the City’s Parks and Trails. Rangers work as hosts for the parks, welcoming visitors and serving as an extra set of “eyes and ears” for the Parks and Recreation Department. Volunteers are asked to commit to weekly visits at assigned parks or trails for one season. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2016 Spring/Summer cohort. Rangers will participate in an orientation and training prior to beginning their assignment. Information about the program and applications can be found on our website under the outreach tab, or by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator, Chris Waite (contact info below). Applications are due by March 15th. Orientation dates will be scheduled based on the number of applicants.

Indoor Multi-Purpose Buildings: Billings Parks & Recreation has two multipurpose buildings that are available for rent to the public. They are located in Gorham and Veteran’s Parks. Both are newly renovated buildings and are a great place to hold your event. The multi-purpose buildings are adjacent to playgrounds and restrooms.

The North Park Center is located at 6th Ave. North and North 19th Street. The center has approximately 5,600 sq. ft. all on one level. This includes a small gym, kitchen area complete with stove, refrigerator, and sink. The center also features a multi-purpose room and restrooms. The building is ideal for meetings, social gatherings, receptions and more. Available for rent to the public 8:00 am - 10:00 pm. All picnic shelters are available on a first-come, first-serve basis unless they are reserved through a paid rental. Rental reservations for shelters must be paid for in advance at the Parks and Recreation Office or online.
