Since 2011, Ida Schlosser (age 72) has been involved in many aspects of the Billings Community & Senior Center. Many people know Ida for her smiling face and warm welcome as guests arrive at the front office for assistance. However, not many people know that in her youth, Ida was an avid surfer, horseback rider, and cross-country skier. This adventurous lady moved to Montana from California after living for a short time in Utah following her marriage to her husband and having the first of their two children. It was in Montana that Ida began her career as a telephone operator and went back to college for nursing classes at Eastern Montana College of Education. At Eastern, Ida joined the sorority Beta Sigma Phi, which she is still active in today. This year, Ida celebrated her 26th year as a sorority sister and continues to help with fundraising, volunteering, and assisting domestic violence survivors with comfort bags. To top off her volunteering, Ida began teaching craft classes at the Billings Community and Senior Center and went on to help in Gramma’s Attic and as a Front Office Assistant. It wasn’t until 2015, that Ida took a paid position in the front office through the Experience Works – Senior Community Service Employment Program. In her 7 years at the Center, Ida has met many amazing people but speaks fondly of the friendship that she has built with Brad Bond and Peggy Meurer. Ida also reflected on her appreciation for Tina Ontiveros, who cooks in the kitchen, and how it is easy to see that “she just wants to help people.” Lastly, Ida tells of the current staff at the Center and how they have helped her grow through the years. It is bitter-sweet news as we congratulate Ida on a new job placement through Experience Works and prepare to bid her farewell as a front-office staff member. Ida excitedly anticipates the opportunity to learn new skills and spend time working on the computer, however, she recognizes that she will greatly miss the comfort of the Center and all of the familiar friendly faces. We hope to see Ida still as a participant in the activities as she embarks on her next adventure.
We invite you all to join us for light refreshments at a Going-Away Party for Ida on Friday, February 9th at 12:30 pm. 8
