Are you planning a vacation? Have you ever been on a vacation but instead of having an enjoyable time you found yourself constantly worrying about the security of your house? This is a common nightmare for people on vacation. Your vacation should not be spoilt by continual worrying about your house being burgled. Here are steps you should take to ensure that your house is secure during your absence. 1. Getting a house sitter is probably the best recommendation. The sitter could be a family member, a friend you trust, someone from your church or club, or even a trusted neighbor. But if getting a house sitter is out of the question, don't give up - there are other ways of keeping your house secure while you are away. 2. Arrange for your neighbor to collect your mail (and your junk mail). Nothing signals that a house is empty more that a pile of letters bulging from a mailbox. If your neighbor cannot collect your mail, make arrangements with the post office to either hold your mail or deliver it to a different address - perhaps to a relative. 3. A garbage can sitting out by the street for days screams "empty house" so arrange with your neighbor to bring the can back to the house on the appropriate day. 4. This may sound strange, but also arrange for your neighbor to put the can out for collection while you are away, even if it is empty. Once again, it becomes a security issue - no garbage can out on the collection day also signals an empty house. 5. Give the house an illusion that someone is there at night. The simplest way is to buy a wall socket timer. Set the timer to turn on and off at certain times during the night, plug a lamp in, and presto... your house will appear to be occupied. 6. Some people go even one step further to make their house appear to be occupied - they have their neighbor hang some clothes out on the clothes line every few days. 7. Go outside and walk around your house as if you were a burglar. What can you see? Try peeping through the windows - again what can you see? Can you see expensive electronic devices such as computers or a television set? If so rearrange the curtains or blinds to minimize what the outside peeper can see. 8. Make sure that you have locked all windows and doors. In the rush of leaving it is very easy to overlook this essential step. 9. And finally, if you have a security alarm make sure to turn it on as you leave.
Following these steps will enable you to relax during your vacation, secure in the knowledge that your house will be safe while you are away.
