Sound Sanctorium: Llandaff Grounds of Llandaff Cathedral A multi-faceted community-embedded masterplan that enables a collaborative approach towards the encompassment of an ecclesiastical institution within the provision of a sanctuary for the nurturing of vulnerable souls, whilst providing opportunity for education + wellbeing through the medium of music, performance and its concomitant parts 01: Bell tower offers initial public engagement into the historic value of the site and offers a brand-new visitor centre to build awareness around the cathedral and its offerings. New form emerges from the rubble to accommodate a visitors centre, café and gallery space. 02: Bunkhouse + Workshops provide a sanctuary for the vulnerable, and offers employment and training opportunities towards the maintenance of the site and the making and refurbishment of instruments, furniture and other ancillary building elements. The building nestles into the treeline to the Northwest of the site. 03: Prebendal House acts as a binding agent between the cathedral and the public sphere through community gathering spaces + connective walkways. The main hall shall host a plethora of events and shows, with the surroundings walkways connecting users to the cathedral 04: Bishop’s Palace Studios is a specialist facility for the recording and presentation of music and its parts, with a state-of-the-art recording space and sunken instrument archive. The building is protected within the ancient walls, creating a secret garden within, and a theatre space that reveals itself Average build cost per £4,628,160 (TBC) square metre £3,195 (TBC) (A÷B) 1,536 sqm £84,480 (£55 per sqm)

11

DETAIL D lifting into place current design / tectonic slender brass ballustered walkway allows light and space to puncture through, as with the perforated brick hung facade against the slender steel lift frame. Marrying the material language with surrounding new fabric reduces the effect of the monolith on the cathedral setting

previous design / tectonic tightly woven bronze mesh and bronze metal sheet gave the lift + walkway a bold, heavy brutal aesthetic that jarred against the historic cathedral setting

gironella history centre lift / carles enrich monolithic vertical brick lift structure scales the cliff face with a sensitive tectonic juxtaposition against it’s context
