Fun, Freedom and Fitness Comfortable Bontrager Nebula saddle: designed just for this bike

Cycling provides so many benefits—the thrill of movement, the confidence of health, enjoying more moments in your day. Trek bikes are well built, reliable and easy to ride. Enjoy them however you like.

Quick, nimble FX Alpha Aluminum frame

Bike Riding Should Be a Pleasure Every part of a quality bike can be adjusted or switched to let you ride as long as you want without discomfort.

7.3 FX Series

If you feel pain anywhere in your body when you ride, come into the shop—it might be time for an adjustment. Front of knee: Saddle is too low or too far forward. Seatpost can be raised, and the saddle can be moved back on its rails. If needed, a layback seatpost will move seat even farther back. Back of knee: Saddle is too high or too far back. Seatpost can be lowered, and saddle can be moved forward on its rails. Butt: Saddle is misadjusted or wrong shape for your body. Might also be worn out; as the padding gets compressed, you get pressed in the wrong places. And don’t forget to wear cycling shorts!

Your personal trainer…is exhilarating and versatile—and loves fresh air as much as you do. Road bike speed, an upright riding position and Bontrager Ride Longer comfort features make this your long-term training partner. FX series starts at $440. Shown: 7.3 FX $640

Hands, shoulders or lower back: Handlebars are too low or too far away from your seat. Neck: Hunched-over position makes you strain to see forward. Feet: Shoes are too soft. Stiffer soled cycling shoes help dramatically. Lungs and leg muscles: Sorry, sometimes those do burn. That’s a “good” burn—you’re getting fitter and the more you ride, the better it gets.

Small tough pedals for little feet

Plenty of gears for hills

At least one rider should carry a pump and basic tools, but everyone should have their own tube. When riding off road, the least experienced riders should determine the terrain. This way everyone has fun and no one gets stressed over the steep climb or fast descent.

“Drafting,” or riding close to the person in front of you, makes riding up to 30% easier, especially in head winds. To get maximum benefit, you need to ride very close to the rider in front of you. Do not look at her rear wheel! Keep your eyes scanning ahead, and let your peripheral vision help you maintain an efficient (but safe) following distance. If you are much stronger than your partners, offer to ride at the front and let the others draft. At least one “special” or epic ride a season makes cycling together a treat. Set a goal to get away for a weekend, or complete a local charity ride. Ask us for suggestions.

THE WSD DIFFERENCE 1

Smaller grips and short-reach levers facilitate a more natural steering position to reduce hand and arm strain, and provide better handling and control.

3

Shorter top tubes help create a more natural, upright position. A less-stretchedout fit means minimal stress on your lower back, neck and shoulders.

2

Narrower handlebars accommodate narrower shoulder width resulting in less fatigue in your arms and shoulders.

4

Anatomically shaped saddles aren’t just comfortable—they provide optimal support and promote efficient leg movement.

Which Rack—Roof, Hitch or Trunk?

Premium Tri-Padded feet and coated metal buckles protect your paint job

As part of your vehicle, racks must be well made and fit securely. Fortunately, rack makers provide many options to fit your lifestyle, needs and budget.

NEW QuickBack™ [2- or 3-bike]

Trunk-mounted racks are ideal for occasional use or use on multiple vehicles. • Pros: Least expensive; easy to transfer between most vehicles; easy to take on and off.

Your Next (and Last) Water Bottle Your Polar Bottle® is Green Made in the U.S.A.

Reusable: Doesn’t become one of the 40 million plastic water bottles Americans throw away each day

Why is water so important?

Polar Bottle® was born in 1994—the brainstorm of two cyclists who wanted to keep their drinks cool longer. Polar Bottles are proudly designed and manufactured in Boulder, CO. Come in and check ‘em out.

Recyclable: Every part except the valve and foil liner Safe: All materials are BPA and Phthalate-free

You are made of water. Water is your body’s primary chemical component, making up about 60% of your body weight. Even mild dehydration will drain your energy and make you feel tired.

Superior Valve Made of flexible durable urethane, instead of rubber, it’s smooth to use, seals very well and unlike most, is removable for cleaning.

How much should you drink? The Institute of Medicine advises, on average, men should consume 3 liters (13 cups) of beverages a day. Women should drink 2.2 liters (9 cups) per day.

Wide mouth allows ice cubes easily into the bottle and makes cleaning easy

Drink an extra 32 oz. per hour of intense exercise.

Freezer and top rack dishwasher safe

Drink even more when it’s hot or humid, and when you’re at high altitude. And if you’re ill, pregnant or breastfeeding. To be safe, drink a glass (or bottle) of water with and between every meal. Hydrate before, during and after exercise. Hint: Carry a water bottle. Keep it cool Cool drinks not only taste great; they can improve your performance: In a study* of eight male cyclists riding in a hot, humid environment, the cyclists who were given cold drinks before and during exercise showed 23% more endurance than the cyclists who were given warm drinks. * “ Cold Drink Ingestion Improves Exercise Endurance Capacity in the Heat,” Lee, Shirreffs, Maughan

Polar Bottle® Keep drinks cool twice as long. The Polar Bottle® is the ideal choice for active people like you. Take it on your bike, in your car, to work—everywhere. Simply fill it with liquid and ice, or, for even longer cooling power, store it in the freezer. Either way, your Polar Bottle® will keep your drink cold twice as long as a regular bottle. 20 oz. $11 24 oz. $12 Capacity: Weight: Height: Diameter:

We Have the Bike of Your Dreams Today Trek Madone Series

Safer, Faster Cornering: Lean, Line, Look First, the right tire pressure makes cornering easy, safe, and predictable. Always inflate to the recommended pressure on each tire’s sidewall.

Not just the next step—a huge leap. When Trek engineers created the new Madone, they drew from thousands of R&D hours, millions of bikes produced and seven Tour de France titles with Lance Armstrong. Then, they pushed the design further than ever. The result is the ultimate balance of low weight, captivating design and no-holds-barred performance. Trek Madone series starts at $2,420 Shown: Madone 5.2 Pro $4,070

Get low. Drop your center of gravity as you approach the turn. Lean your bike more than your body and keep your weight on your pedals. Drive your weight onto your outside pedal. Keep your inside pedal high and almost weightless.

Comfort: Seat mast design improves vertical compliance 39%, reduces weight 25%

Strength: Steerer/head tube designed as integrated unit for increased strength and savings up to 120g

Performance: Lighter, more responsive carbon construction with ControlCore™ tube proportioning

Efficiency: Bottom Bracket has 48% lateral stiffness increase and is 40g lighter

Pro-quality Bontrager Race Lite wheels

Use light hands. Balance on your feet, while your hands maintain a firm but relaxed grip. Flatten your torso, with hips rearward on your seat and shoulders near your bars. Straighten your inside arm. In a left turn, lean your bike by pushing your left grip into the turn. Butt off the seat. While standing on your outside pedal, lean your bike until your seat rests against your inner thigh. The fastest line is the biggest radius: entering on the outside, in to the center and exiting to the outside. Look along the line you want to follow through the apex of the turn, not at objects you want to avoid. Exaggerate a bit. This is the best way to learn and replace old habits with new skills.

The Madone you get from us is built to the identical standards as the bikes for Lance and the Astana team. Creating a Lance-worthy road bike required new thinking in four key areas of bicycle frame design (see above). Come in to see how these improvements significantly reduce weight and increase performance for you and for world champions.

Women’s

The Evolution of Cycling Shoes

Men’s

In the nineteenth century, the first cycling shoes offered minimal support and no secure attachment to the bike. Rigid soles of wood or hardened leather increased power transfer to the pedals. Today, soles made of materials including plastic, fiberglass, polyamide and carbon fiber transmit even more of the rider’s power to the pedals. Toe “clips” — leather or nylon straps that ran over the top of the foot — improved the rider’s connection to the pedal. A cleat was later nailed to the sole for added security. These immovable cleats were replaced by adjustable ones in the 1980s.

Shimano 105 Road Pedal PD-5610 The road pedal for everyone. These 105 pedals give you the speedy, connected feel of Shimano’s highest-level pedals—at a mid-level price. $109.99

In 1984, Look adopted ski industry technology to pedals, allowing easy step in and twist out. These “clipless” pedals added a new level of efficiency, security and comfort.

A tale of two cleats Road—SPD-SL cleat is larger for greater foot-to-pedal stability and more power with less foot fatigue.

In 1990, Shimano’s SPD system introduced a much smaller, recessed cleat to enable better offroad riding and easier walking. New designs continue to improve comfort and biomechanical efficiency. By the early ‘90s, adjustable cleats allowed riders to fine-tune their foot position, and rotational “float” accommodates every rider’s individual pedaling style. The latest innovation is custom-fit shoes for an individual cyclist’s foot. Some cycling shoes accept custommade orthotic footbeds, while others can be heat-molded to your feet.

While many cycling shoemakers work hard to integrate their shoes with your pedals, Shimano has a distinct advantage. Shimano makes both. Come to the shop, and we’ll show you the ideal shoes and pedals for your type of riding.

Hardtail bikes have front suspension forks and rigid frames. They tend to be light, durable and affordable, and they ride well on dirt roads and smoother trails. 29" hardtails—with 29" wheels instead of 26" wheels— deliver the simplicity of rigid frames with the smoother rolling of bigger wheels. Race suspension bikes have about 100mm (4") of suspension travel front and rear. They have a singular purpose: to ride trails as quickly and efficiently as possible. These bikes win all the major cross-country races. Trail bikes typically have more suspension—usually 120-140mm—and more stable handling than race bikes. They allow typical riders to enjoy steeper, more technical trails with greater comfort and control. Trail bikes are increasingly popular among serious riders who don’t race.

Make Sure Your Mountain Bike Fits

“If I could only have one bike on a singletrackladen desert island, the Fuel EX is it. I’ve used this bike in cross country races, and even short track races, and then taken it for the long weekend in Moab to ride with friends on long travel bikes.” – Travis Brown. Olympian, U.S. Marathon National Champion, Trek Product Developer since 1994

You’ll have more control, confidence and fun if your bike is set up correctly for you. Seat height for climbing. Just like most bikes, you want about a 30-degree bend in your knee when your pedal is at the bottom of the stroke. Seat height for descending. Lowering your seat gives you more space to move with obstacles and flow over rough terrain. A drop of only one-half inch can greatly improve your descending; for technical terrain try lowering your seat several inches. Ask us about a quickrelease seatpost clamp or the ultimate: a remotely adjustable seatpost.

Fuel EX Series Explore long, technical trails. Versatile suspension and predictable handling help you ride rougher trails with less effort and more confidence. Yeah, go for those rock gardens and small drops. Fuel EX series starts at $1,540 Shown: Fuel EX 8 $2,640

Handlebar position. Most mountain bikers set their bars even with or above their climbing seat height, and they can reach their bars with just a slight forward bend. Shorter stems and riser bars make many mountain bikers feel more confident. Controls. You should be able to reach your shifters and brake levers without bending your wrists or reaching with your fingers. If you feel any strain, it’s time for an adjustment. Suspension. Your fork and shock must be set up for your body weight and riding style. We cannot overemphasize how important this is; it’s harder to ride with maladjusted suspension than no suspension. This is a two-person operation, and it can be tricky. Come to the shop, and we’ll make sure you and your bike fit each other perfectly.

“What I really like about the Top Fuel is that the rear suspension is supple and responsive, giving me amazing control over rough terrain, but the bike is still very stiff and efficient under pedaling. TREK SUSPENSION INTELLIGENCE Trek’s commitment to racing, and to great all-around riders like Travis Brown, has resulted in the best kind of innovations—the kind that help you have more fun on your mountain bike. • ABP – By placing the rear suspension pivot in line with your axle, ABP keeps your brakes and suspension working

Suspension always active

when you need them most: when the trail gets steep and rough.

• EVO Link – Trek’s sculpted one-piece EVO Link is both lighter and stiffer than the old-fashioned three-piece design.

You get a lighter bike and more control in even the most extreme, off-camber situations.

• Full Floater – One end of the rear shock is connected to the EVO Link; the other is connected to an extension of the

swingarm. This gives you the elusive union of small-bump plushness, efficient climbing and big-impact absorption.

Did you know… CO2 for bicycle tire inflation is comparable to opening a soda bottle. A 16-gram CO2 cylinder has about the same amount of CO2 found in a 2-liter bottle of soda. CO2, which is part of the natural carbon cycle, includes inflating your bicycle tire, opening bottles of soda, and even breathing. These are completely different from burning fossil fuels, which releases CO2 that has been trapped for millions of years.

The Keys to Safe Braking

Custom G2 Fox Talas 140RP24 fork adjusts 100-140mm

Custom Fox Float RP23 DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve)—coil shock performance with air shock lightness

Of all cycling skills, effective braking is probably the most important. Maintain a safe speed—and respond to emergencies—with these tips:

Gary Fisher: Mountain bike pioneer. Exroad racer. Cycling visionary. Gary is a cycling icon—but apparently someone forgot to tell him. Gary only cares about two things: 1) riding; and 2) creating fun, practical bikes for you to ride. Whether your rides take you to the next county or to the coffee shop, Gary has a bike for you. Come in and try one for yourself.

NEW Roscoe Series The tool for aggressive trail riding. Gary knows you’re riding bigger, faster and harder than ever—and that you don’t want to sacrifice quickness for capability. 140mm of custom-tuned suspension and a lightweight frame make the Roscoe faster than an all-mountain bike and burlier than a trail bike. Roscoe series bikes start at $2,970 Shown: Roscoe III $4,950

Brake on good ground. Look for smooth, dry spots with good traction. You should always be scanning ahead, to where you want to go. Brake in a straight line. Your tires must be perpendicular to the ground. If you brake with your tires leaned (in a turn) you risk a crash. Use both brakes. You get the most traction and control when you use your front and rear brakes together. Don’t be afraid of the front brake: If you follow these tips, it will dramatically improve your stops.

Light, smooth aluminum main frame with carbon seatstays

Ease into it. Squeeze the levers slowly to gradually build up the braking force. If a tire starts to break loose, ease the pressure on that brake—like your car’s ABS system. The most powerful braking happens at the point just before a skid. Get off your seat. The harder you brake, the more important you shift your weight back to counter your forward momentum. Drop your heels and try to drive your weight into your pedals, not your handlebars. Your hands should stay light and neutral on the bars. The less time you spend braking, the better. Brake firmly until you reach a comfortable speed, then get back to coasting. This improves control and reduces stress. Dragging your brakes is unsafe—and no fun. To help your cycling clothes last for decades, wash them on a gentle cycle with additive-free detergent, then let them air-dry. Heat damages stretchy materials. If it stretches, keep it out of a hot dryer.
