Bimo Sekti was my birthname my parents gave me on 11 Aug 1993 and it still is. Went to high school like just like other students, till I went on university and dedicated myself for sustainable architecture, like no other student. I went studying Architectural Technology on Coventry University, Coventry, United Kingdom on 2011 after graduated from high school. Here I learnt many things from the meaning of life to how to design sustainable architecture. Graduated on 2015 with average marks and beyond average mindset.
Sustainable architecture was everything when i was on university. Everything needs to be low carbon emmision. Then later i realized the outcome was fascinating, to have designed everything so effectively. The trend known then was passivhaus, a house made made by germans, that if done properly electricity and gas bills would be no more. It utilize the features from nature and harvest them to the energy we can all use later on in the building. Energy from the sun, the wind, the water leftover and even the feces processed in the structure would be recycled resulting usable energy. It was called passivhaus because the house was passive and there was no operating mechanism whatsoever. And if you google passivhaus by curiosity you will find that passivhaus also concentrate on keeping the heat in the building in and the temperature out of the building out. This is done as germans is located in the europe and winter often happens there. However, unlike Germany ,Indonesia has tropical climate and without winter, and with that i would think that heat in Indonesia could be also used in architecture, even better because heat is as far as your eyes could see.

The design was intended to follow the main architecture design which includes “a heart” in the middle of it meaning to be a space for all the students to gather, a common space if you would say, just like the heart is where all the blood flows gather. This too, was intended to follow that heart scheme, by becoming the blood vessels that helped the students to get to the heart itself. It cuts the “flesh” of landscape in front of the building so students can easily go the south entrance rather than going around it. The design also includes the new parking space required by the client. Several extra parking space is added in the outer layer of the landscape, with additional disabled parking space with the closest distance to the entrance as required by Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

The building design is inspired by nature, the Madakaripura Waterfall to be exact. It main feature is the green roof that spreads from the east end to the west end of the site. This green roof is a combination of the garden next to the site that was blended in the purpose of effective land use. It shapes like the earth that is raised from ground level and surrounds the lobby area. the glass curtain panel works as the waterfall in the madakaripura waterfall that lets the lighting to glow more and create the ambient atmosphere.
MADAKARIPURA WATERFALL
I N S P I R A T I O N The water fall was believed to be the final meditation place of military Commander-in-Chief, Gajah Mada, of the great Javanese kingdom of Majapahit in East Java. An atmosphere of natural grandeur radiates around as the waterfall comes into view. the ambience around the area is truly something that needs to be experienced first-hand to be believed. Surrounded by outstandingly high walls, the Fall flows down into an almost mystical natural chamber. Inside the 200 meters “chamber”, the reflected sunlight shining through onto the wet green moss on the rocky wall accompanied by the ever rumbling sounds of water creates a spectacle unlikely found elsewhere. Decorated with huge boulders, endlessly falling water, and sparkling moss, one only needs to gaze up to the distant sky and immerse oneself in the spellbinding beauty of nature. While the fascinating scene can be captured on camera, the true sensation of being in one of the most outstanding places on earth can only be felt by being there. As a place that is historically significant, culturally sacred, and naturally spellbinding, Madakaripura is a perfect inspiration for a design as such of a learning space.
Initially, creating a building with a roof that can be accessed from ground floor was priority, however there was limitation on the site areas. As the site was planned square, the inclination didn’t meet the regulation qualification.
DESIGN V.1 DESIGN V.2
DESIGN V.3
Then, the design version 2 was modified to utilize the site areas as maximum as possible, resulting in the wierd square shape with the slanting facade shape. This particular design meets the regulation qualification but didn’t meet the aesthetics requirements. In the other hand, it doesn’t look as good.
actual building size
additional landscape Finally, the design version 3, the final design meet all the requirement. This is as result of utilizing the public area next to it which is not to be touched. After several meeting with the clients, after explaining it was used to be replaced also green areas but integrated with the building, it was approved as we see on the picture now.

The design is simply innovative, from the use of green roof slope thatt spans from ground floor to the second floor and is usable for the students to use. The use of glass curtain also maximize the natural light that could go into the building, not only making it naturally pleasant but also saves the electricity used for the lighting.

The client clearly mentioned that he wants the restaurant to be fresh looking and has some modern sense to it to attract visitors. However it should not high end enough so that the new visitors wouldn’t be to intimidated by the design thinking its over priced. Initially Jambal Roti already has a theme on how their restaurant should look. The task here is only to modernize it and refresh the image. Modern look combined with its previous design was picked as the target market of the restaurant was young people age of 20-30. Concrete looks with timber and glass seemed dynamic and considered suitable for the market. Simplistic and modern look seemed to attract the client more thant modern traditional theme. With that said, its original design was not left, yet it was kept hidden in the newly modern design. For example, the green colour of jambal was kept in some furniture as minor detail, to remember of how it originally was. The stripes partition is also an example, it was originally a traditional partition in the current Jambal Roti restaurant, but kept and modernised to match the modern theme. Same goes to the windowed mirror on the back which is also modernised.

The plan was simple, to change the face of the school without altering any of the remaining structure. The solution was to hide it, covering it with facades. The question is what kind facades? There was 3 initial ideas that came up, choosen by aesthetic looks, Timber stripes panel, Terracota fake bricks and Vertical gardens. Which was later on mixed in the design when possible. The timber stripes is used to cover the 1st floor, hanging to its walls making the looks of having a dress on the structure. The terracota fake bricks is used on the ground floor to cover the unsymmetrical wall faces. Then, the vertical gardens was used on the clean shaped walls on the ground floor side as a base to put the school logo.

The facades works as what facades does, it covers up the existing building as it was not as neat. It also advantage on the close distance stripes, giving some shading to the existing window. It also function as a filter, keeping any water or dust that is blown by the wind detained to it. And for the rest, it basically refreshes its function, giving new soul to the aged structure that was consumed over time.

SUSTAINABILITY ON BUDGET
Location Date Height

Client was on a tight budget although its roofing structure was rotten by termite. The client requires the dwelling’s roof to be changed by new material although the roofing itself was falling down slowly. The house layout was not to be changed so the design only consist of its roofing. The design was simple, to make one roof, a very high one. so that air circulation could be better, and some roofing tiles was replaced with the ones made of glass, so that sunshine could go through during the day, reducing the use of lighting during daytime.

After Several weeks of works, it could be seen that the theory of using glass roof tiles somehow mend the lighting in the house during Although at first it Rev day. Description Date was feared that the temperature would go up of heat, after installation, the actual building temperature didn’t rise significantly due to high ceiling that let air circulate, bringing the cold air in and the hot air out. Sustainability was the main genre of this architecture. Used materials is used when its possible. The former roof tiles that was previously used was altered to be used as bricks for the landscape later on. Direct sunlight was minimum as some rooms has no windows, glass roof tiles was hoped to give natural lighting during daylight, so electricity cost would also be reduced.

AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY Moments captured in a photo lasts forever, or at least till the medium breaks. It kepts priceless memories you couldn’t go back to. It tells stories, it worths thousand words. It is simply fun, to create your own moment and let it last forever. I think photography integrates directly with travelling, it lets you capture all moments you went through.

TRAVELING Travelling is by far the greatest teacher i ever had. It lets me be alone with only me and listen to my thoughts. Education and societies teaches someone to deal with any problems about our relationship with other human beings, but one thing it never teaches us is how to deal with ourselves. And i think it is fundamentally important because i honestly think that being honest with your own very self is more important than being honest with others. It lets you know what you want, and it is too, fundamentally substantial. You can get what you want, but you cannot want what you want. And I can confidently say that travelling had thaught me all those soft skills, to think independently, to want independently. Travelling also had pushed me to get out of my comfort zone since 2011. It had pushed me to places i’ve never been, with people i’ve never seen, and hearing languages i’ve never heard. And insisted me to stay and adapt. Initially all might be scary, due to to uncertainty happening rapidly. But remember it is all part of the lesson. Once you master this, you can be anywhere in the world without worry. It lets you develop. And for the very least, it is fun to go visit places you’ve never seen before, it gives you inspiration. Ideas of how small the world is, how people on the other half of the world is living differently, how you are not the only one. Meeting new people in the way is bless, keeping in touch with them once you return home is another grace. And remember, once you start travelling you’ll realize that home is not one place, not the place you were born nor the place you grew up, travelling lets you realize how grateful a home is, its something more, home is where your heart is. Interestingly enough, I was a natural traveller since i was a kid. I remember when i was 5 years old telling my mother that i wanted to pursue my college abroad. Back then i didn’t have any aim on where i wanted to go to, but i know one thing, that i need to prepare myself, and i did. With the help of my mother, i learnt english for 12 years, starting at the day i told my mother that i wanted to study abroad till the end of high school. It was not for nothing. I devoted my self after high school, a gamble or a bet if you may, to live in a place i didn’t know anyone of. Just for the sake of experience. Scared was the main thing that was felt, by my families. For me, i felt pure excitement, overwhelming of esctasy. Fear is the least thing i would want to feel. I couldn’t wait to be in other places. There was no single time i would want to go back home, as by then I realized that home is not one place, home is where your heart is, and with that, i’ll always be home Kynance Cove, UK (2015)
ENTHUSIAST MOVIE MAKER
Bimo Sekti for PPI Coventry (2014)
A movie is simply moving pictures to tell stories. I remember the first time I made a movie, it was 2010 and used a nokia phone as a recorder. It was fun and tiring. I was a newbie, It took me full on 24 hours to edit 8 minute video. It was tiring but it was worthed, worth the fun. After that, i tought myself to learnt how to make a proper short film, i even learnt basic filmography. I think a movie is a great media to tell how you feel, or any story in general. Since University, i create movie anytime i need to tell something, from something formal to just a travel movie.
