Laser technology and BIM: Relationship betwe

I

think there is hardly anything left to be invented when it comes to construction business. However, the laser technology is certainly the new entrant in the construction industry but it has already engulfed the building trends across the world.

 Laser

is the acronym for ‘light amplification by stimulated emission of the radiation.’ The BIM users are optimizing the laser technology to get the most out of it.

What is laser technology and how is it related to BIM?  Laser

technology is referred or known with various names such as point cloud technology or Scan to BIM. This technology is applied by the engineers mostly in the renovation projects. In the laser scanning process, laser beams are thrown or sent to an existing building to scan it.

 When

these beams return back to the hardware they produce a set of information or data which is called a ‘point cloud.’ A point cloud that is derived after using laser scanning techniques is then used by the engineers to extract a large number of information related to the scanned building.

Point cloud is imported in Revit to convert it into a 3D Model ď‚ž The

use of BIM software Revit is crucial for converting the scanned data into 3D model. The Revit generated 3D model is full of concrete information related to the building.

ď‚ž Now

the engineers and the architects can extract various necessary drawings and plans from it like elevations and 2D CAD drawings etc. These can be used and referred by the engineers whenever needed.

What are advantages to using laser technology in construction? ď‚ž Well

there is a long list of advantages of point cloud technology when it is used in construction. The first and most important among them is that the process of renovation has become quite easy. The time taken to scan the building is very less compared to the manual measurement process.

ď‚ž In

the olden times engineers used to visit the site and had to take the measurement from the scratch. This was a tiring work. But now with the employment of laser technique things have changed a lot. Since accurate and reliable data is easily available it can reduce the project cost to a large extent.Â

ď‚ž Earlier

during renovation building were demolished from anywhere without the knowing the exact fault points. But that is not the case now, since we already have the complete data with us in the form of a 3D model.

ď‚ž So

the relationship between laser technology and BIM is quite simple. BIM is making best use of the laser technology to enhance productivity and to reduce the project cost.
