01 WELCOME TO BIMUN 2018 LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY AND DIRECTOR GENERAL Dear delegates and Faculty Advisors, Finally, BIMUN 2018 is almost here. The Executive Team has been working hard for the past 9 months and now the baby is almost there. Indeed, managing a conference such as BIMUN is a difficult but rewarding and marvellous experience. The process has not been easy, but the effort will finally have its reward on April. Our illusion, enthusiasm and commitment is enormous and we are looking forward to an unforgettable and enriching conference. The conference will be celebrated at ESADE (Escola Superior d’Administració i Direcció d’Empreses) Business School, a renowned and modern institution, and European International School, a top-notch institution located in the peaceful town of Sant Cugat, right in the outskirts of Barcelona. ESADE offers beautiful rooms in which delegates of our five committees (Security Council, ECOSOC, UNODC, UNHRC and UNEP) will have the chance to debate about the carefully picked topics of BIMUN 2018. The BIMUN Team has worked in order to provide you with some other fantastic activities throughout the 4 days the conference lasts for. These activities have been designed with the intention of having a great time and creating bonds between all members of this family. To sum up, it will be a great pleasure to meet you all next April and enjoy together sunny Barcelona! Yours faithfully,

Ms. Ane Igartua

WELCOME TO BIMUN 2018

LETTER FROM THE COORDINATOR Dear Delegates, Congratulations on attending BIMUN 2018 - The 3rd edition of Barcelona International Model United Nations conference. BIMUN 2018 promises to be a conference that will deliver so much. It will bring you together to discuss, debate and challenge one another. You will discuss topics that will test you, often divide you, but above all, make you think and question the world that you live in. When I started MUN, I was often unsure on what to expect. I did not know who I would meet, what we would do and how it would be. Every session has been different, each offering a separate challenge, a new perspective and above a whole host of new and unforgettable memories. This information booklet is designed to help answer some of those initial questions. Please read it carefully as it will be your best source of information in the lead up to the session. Right now, all the BIMUN Team is working tirelessly to put on a session that will live up to the very highest standards set by the MUN Community. We are all set to begin this adventure that is BIMUN 2018. I hope you are all as excited as I am. Read this booklet, do as much preparation as you can and, above all, get ready. Get ready for this adventure and I look forward to meeting you and being right there with you as we embark on the 2nd Barcelona International Model United Nations Conference.

03 BIMUN 2018’s ENDEAVOUR “BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN SOCIETIES” Our endeavour "Building Bridges Between Societies": It is now time for our globalized society to face the new social reality our world is living in. Borders have been erased and multiculturalism is not anymore something which is about to come; it is the new reality. Despite this change, some groups of population are opting for not building bridges among different cultures and peoples and are giving birth to a new form of populism and authoritarianism which seeks to exclude some human beings from being part of a given society. In BIMUN, we are truly convinced this is not the way to proceed. As an international and supranational entity, the UN ought to take a stance in favor of promoting and enhancing cooperation among different cultures and societies which have now to live together, unavoidably, given that modern societies are heterogeneous culturally, ethnically and religiously. If we build these bridges, the enrichment the population will experience will definitely be a very precious gift. Mutual respect and cooperation shall be taught and preached from every corner of the world since the most basic stages of education and should be enforced by governments and organizations such as ours. We are building walls where there should have been bridges, and it is our task to reverse this situation: let’s build bridges between societies!

05 SESSION OVERVIEW

Opening Ceremony The Opening Ceremony marks the official opening of the session. At the Opening Ceremony several prominent speakers will deliver a key-note speech to the session participants. The session will also be addressed by the Secretary-General, Director-General, Directors of Debate and other members of the Executive Team. Training Session Before beginning committee work itself, delegates will have the chance to attend a preparation debate session at the grandiose European International School auditorium. This way, every participant will be able to understand and get used to the BIMUN Rules of Procedure. Teambuilding Through various indoor and outdoor activities, which are both fun and challenging, delegates will get to know the committee they will be working with throughout the conference and learn to develop the ways of working together in a team through some fun games, energisers and problem solving games. Under the direction of experienced MUN members –chairpersons–, Teambuilding is geared towards creating confidence and trust within the members of the committee so they will be prepared to face all the challenges that lie ahead, being capable of discussing and building solutions together to current global topics.

SESSION OVERVIEW Debate Sessions During debate session in ESADE, delegates are separated in five committees (SC, ECOSOC, UNHRC, UNODC and UNEP) and proceed with the debate of the topics they have been assigned. The officers chair the debate and evaluate delegates and the admin staff help in every aspect, while the media team immortalizes every moment. Visit Barcelona In the free evenings, all participants of BIMUN 2018 also have the option to take part in some of the multiple activities that are offered in Barcelona. The members of the Executive Team will gladly suggest any places you can visit. Social Event Night BIMUN Night Social Event will take place in Attic Studio, a spectacular attic in a two-floor building located in Sant Cugat del Vallès, 15 to 20 minutes away from ESADE University by foot. It is equipped with an outstanding 450m2 terrace with swimming pool, as well as a comfortable and large interior with great views. The place is full of charm and beauty, and it serves as a versatile space to celebrate all types of events, such as the BIMUN 2018 Social Event. General Assembly (GA) The GA session will be taking place at the European International School on Sunday the 8th. In it, all of the BIMUN delegates will join and debate together on a topic which will be selected by you, the delegates Closing Ceremony The Closing Ceremony will be held on April the 8th. The format is similar to that in the Opening Ceremony. Speeches are made by some members of the BIMUN team as well as by some special guests. In addition, awards are given to the best delegates of each committee. With this ceremony, the Executive Team declares the conference closed.

06 PARTICIPANTS

DELEGATES There will be over 200 participants from more than 17 countries from 4 different continents. Delegates will be divided in different committees according to their preferences, so all participants will be mixed. Each committee will discuss different topics, which students will have the chance to prepare beforehand. CHAIRPERSONS Chairs play a very important role in the session. They guide and lead delegates through all stages of the session - Teambuilding, Lobbying and Debate Sessions-. Being experienced MUNers, they are in a good position to empathise with delegates, helping them along but not being too obtrusive. Each committee is expected to have two chairs, who will come from another country in order to promote the use of the English language. MEDIA TEAM The Press Team will comprise several journalist and editors. They are the ones in charge of immortalizing all the anecdotes and important moments of the session by writing about them in the sessions newspaper and producing videos and taking pictures during the whole session. ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM The Admin Team is a group of twenty-four members led by the Executive Team that ensures that everything works as planned.

Â

In BIMUN, delegates come with only a few draft clauses which they merge with the draft clauses of other delegates during caucus. Caucus is the BIMUN-equivalent of lobbying in other conferences: we use a different term to distinguish between the regular whole-resolution-merging process called Lobbying and specific BIMUN-style clause-by-clause caucusing, which is to merge individual clauses and gain the required amount of signatures in order to submit the clause to the Chair for debate. Caucus-time may be requested by delegates, if they feel the need to have quick and informal contact on a clause or on an amendment, or offered by the chairs when they feel the need arises and the flow of debate requires. It is ruled by the chairs and their ruling is final and does not necessitate a vote. Clauses and amendments which are debated are typed and projected on a screen. There is no need at BIMUN for delegates’ laptops. Reminder: only official notepaper, which will be handed-in at Registration and screened by the conference Secretariat, may be exchanged during the conference. For further information you may now access the new preparation center in our website.
