2009 Annual Report

When the paths of our lives take unexpected turns, we long for home. We need shelter and safety. We crave stability when we face losing a job, a family member or a place to live. We thrive in communities where we feel as if we belong. We find purpose in contributing to the lives of others. The challenge has seldom been greater for Graceworks Lutheran Services to live out our mission to help people experience dignity and wholeness when so many people are struggling to keep jobs, make ends meet, stop evictions and foreclosures, deal with health issues, and live active, meaningful lives in retirement. This annual report explores some of the ways Graceworks helps people experience a new sense of home during unsettling times of their lives.

4

Our Mission

In response to Jesus Christ, Graceworks Lutheran Services helps people experience dignity and wholeness in relationship with God, family and community.

Our Values

Faithfulness to Christ • Wholeness of Life • Equality and Justice Quality of Service • Integrity • Stewardship of Resources

Ted had moved from job to job and place to place all his life. When he was 68 years old and felt trapped in a dangerous living situation, he found Graceworks Housing Services and discovered a sense of belonging. Wendy’s increasing medical needs made it impossible for her to continue living where she felt at home in one residence where Graceworks Enhanced Living provides services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Imagine her relief when she found she could stay within the Graceworks family by moving to another residence in Cincinnati where staff could provide a higher level of care. Melissa had been steadily employed her whole adult life, then lost her job and was about to be evicted. She sought Graceworks’ help to keep a place where she and her teenaged daughters could live during the winter while she looked for work. Harry moved to Bethany Village to be close to his wife as she experienced Alzheimer’s disease. When she passed away, he not only found friends, but also joy and purpose in helping others.

We are thankful for many faithful congregations, donors, volunteers, staff and other friends who commit themselves to helping others experience a sense of home through Graceworks Lutheran Services. Their efforts are acknowledged and evident in this annual report.

Belonging

Graceworks Housing Services

T

ed felt trapped inside an eightby-twelve apartment, hearing drunks and drug addicts through thin-paneled walls. He rarely saw friends, never family. Raised on a southern Indiana farm, from age 10 he had drifted from job to job, relationship to relationship and place to place across the country until, with nothing but Social Security income, he feared for his safety living in one padlockprotected room. At age 68, he says, “I was just about ready to say, ‘That’s it!’”

Then he heard of Graceworks Housing Services. He drove his leaking old car to Greensburg, Ind., where Grace Lutheran Community has 40 apartments for older and disabled individuals. His eyes lit up when he found he qualified for federal rent assistance for an apartment with a kitchen, living room,

2

bathroom and bedroom. But “I was antisocial.” He trusted no one, expected nothing, stayed in his apartment. “He was in self-preservation mode,” says Penny Dolph, Service Coordinator at Grace Community. He moved in with only clothes and a few boxes of papers. Penny and Site Manager Debbie Robbins gave him furniture a recently deceased resident donated. Other residents gave him household items. Ted still kept to himself. During his first holidays at Grace, he showed Debbie a poem he had written. He poured out the deep pain of loneliness he felt. He told Debbie that his children “don’t want anything to do with me.” Debbie told him, “God’s got a purpose for everybody. You never know when life will change.”

He slowly became involved in the community, having doughnuts, playing bingo. “I found respect, caring, kindness, friendships here,” says Ted. “That was a great change and a shock to me. I never had anybody talk to me the way Penny and Debbie talk to me before.” He began volunteering to pick up food from the local meals program to deliver to Grace residents. He contributed poems and prayers to the Grace newsletter. By the next Thanksgiving, Ted reconnected with several children and an ex-wife. They had their first holiday meal together in 30 years. ”Since about 1980, I’ve been trying to get my life together. I’ve just about got it together now.”

“I can never give back en what I’ve be given, but I at can give wh I can.”

Debbie said he has changed 180 degrees from the Ted she first met. “He’s positive, he’s happy, he brings joy to others. He’s touched us. He’s found his purpose.” For the first time Ted can remember he feels a sense of home, of belonging in a community where people care about him and he cares about them. “Before I came I had lost all hope. I didn’t think I’d fit in around here. It feels good to have something to live for.”

Wendy’s new home Graceworks Enhanced Living

W

endy is one of the last passengers to exit the white van in front of a residence in Cincinnati where Graceworks Enhanced Living provides services for individuals with developmental disabilities. The eight residents have returned home from a day’s work at the Goodwill sheltered workshop. Petite with thick brunette hair and eyeglasses that belie her weakening vision, Wendy says goodbye to the driver, steadies herself and begins tapping with her white cane to feel the edges and center of the sidewalk. Stepping forward, then a few steps backwards, she carefully makes her way to the door, up a few steps and into her room that she shares with Kim. Wendy, 34, moved to Cincinnati a year ago after living for eight years in a Dayton-area residence, one of 28

4

where Graceworks Enhanced Living provides services and care tailored to the needs of each individual. After three hospitalizations, Wendy needed more nursing care at home than the staff in the Dayton-area residence could provide, said Terri Brown, manager of Wendy’s new home in Cincinnati. Wendy’s reluctance to move was relieved when the Dayton staff reassured her that she could trust the people in Cincinnati to not only care about her the way the staff in her Dayton home cared, but also to help her regain her health. Terri made sure Wendy would experience a sense of home. “We understood that Wendy would need time to adjust to sharing a room,” says Terri. When Wendy arrived, the other eight residents warmly

comfort well-being cari

welcomed her to the dinner table where they swapped introductions and stories about their favorite things. Wendy is getting her life back on track medically and working toward her goals. She’s saving up to buy an adjustable bed with remote controls. And she has hopes and dreams of someday riding through the countryside in a green Chevy car just like the one her grandpa drove when she was three years old. Wendy says the best way to meet new people is, “Just say Hi!” She admits that compliments give her “happy ears.” And as friendships become dearer to her over time, she says, “You’re in my heart.”

ing

As she tells Terri about her day at work: “I had some coffee at work … and what’s for dinner?”… Wendy reminds Terri that she would like to go back to Dayton when the weather is warmer to visit with her old friends and then drive by her childhood home in the country where her grandpa lived. With a hug, Wendy says, “This is my new home. You’re in my heart, Terri.” “And, Wendy, you’re in my heart, too,” Terri reassures.

“This is my new home. You’re in my heart, Terri,” says Wendy.

Staying home Homelessness Prevention

M

“Every morning seemed like it took a long time,” says Melissa. The eviction date “was coming up rapidly.”

An eviction notice stunned her. If she didn’t pay within two weeks, she would lose the apartment in Kettering. “I was devastated,” says Melissa. “I freaked out and called any resources I could find.”

“I was shocked it happened so quickly,” says Melissa. “I feel very blessed and thankful. If it wasn’t for your program, I’d probably be homeless right now.”

She learned that Graceworks Lutheran Services had just begun working with the federal Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP) in October. She and Graceworks Case Coordinator Kristen Harrelson scrambled to beat the eviction clock: to complete paperwork, negotiate

6

with the sympathetic local apartment manager and communicate with the out-of-town management.

elissa never felt so sick before. Steadily employed since age 16, she had worked to build a life for herself and two teenaged daughters. Suddenly she lost her job, missed a rent payment and was stricken with acute bronchitis and vertigo. She dragged herself out of bed to apply for unemployment benefits and look for work.

A rent check arrived the day before her court date. The landlord canceled the eviction hearing. Melissa’s family would spend Christmas at home.

Melissa’s was the first of 13 families Graceworks helped stay home for the holidays. Graceworks continues to help persons stabilize their housing as they work on the larger situation. HPRP funds are for individuals and

families who would be homeless if not for emergency assistance with rent and utilities, housing search assistance and case management. Beyond that, Kristen looks at each individual as a whole person. She helps people develop viable plans to meet short-term and long-term goals. “Kristen has been wonderful,” says Melissa. “She’s been there to answer every question. She has compassion.”

Melissa’s assistance ended when she found a temporary job, while she continued to look for a long-term position in office management. Her work record and ability to complete tasks were convincing signs that she would sustain her family when assistance ended, Kristen says. Melissa is thankful to have a place for her family to be safe, warm and together while they recover from her job loss and build for the future.

“I won’t stay down for long,” Melissa says. “I’m too independent. I’m willing to do what I can. I won’t stay in this crisis forever. I’m too strong for that.”

Community of friends Bethany Village

H

arry and Margaret worked for more than 10 years to find the best living arrangement as her Alzheimer’s disease increasingly impacted their lives. They managed with caregivers at home and temporary stays in nursing facilities until “they told me I could never take her home again.” After Margaret moved to Bethany Village to experience full nursing care, Harry moved to a Bethany Village apartment to be close to his wife of 63 years. “I couldn’t have had a better wife,” says Harry. They got acquainted on a trolley ride and later married in First Lutheran Church of Dayton. They raised a family in Washington Township, where in 1951 Harry moved the family business, Meckstroth Interiors.

but soon gave Harry the supporting community he needed after she died in October, 2008. He learned from a grief recovery group that he needed to talk about his feelings with friends. He found it easy to make friends at Bethany. “You can walk down the hall and say good morning to almost anybody. I’ve met more people who are willing to be friends.” Now, he volunteers for others, attends classes and exercises in the fitness center. He enjoys activities with Pastor Bob Ashburn, Exercise Physiologist Christy Trittschuh and Life Enrichment staff. His new passion is helping organize a Wii bowling team that competes with other senior living communities and a group that plays for fun every week.

“I’m getting more people involved so they can make themselves happier. It is a game that you can do. You need exercise, you’re using your brain and playing a game.” He recalls helping a woman learn to play. Every time she got up to bowl, he showed her how to press buttons, swing her arm and release at the right time. “She came up afterwards and said: ‘I’ve been thinking I don’t have much to live for. You made me want to live, because I can do something.’ Well, that made my day!”

“I’ve always tried to help people. That’s why I’m volunteering here. If I can help anybody do anything, it’s worthwhile.” Now, Bethany feels more like home than ever. Bill Ringo, an old friend with whom Harry and Margaret went out to dinner for years, moved into the apartment next door. A fellow member of Faith Lutheran Church moved in downstairs. Harry moved to Bethany out of a sense of necessity. But he has discovered a community of friends where he can live an active, meaningful life. “The surroundings are more than I expected to be able to have. And I never figured people would be so friendly.”

nmmunity

During an unsettling year, Graceworks Lutheran Services provided a sense of security, comfort, belonging and community – a sense of home – to tens of thousands of individuals. Through a wide range of residential and community care services, we seek to help older adults, individuals with disabilities, and persons facing financial or personal challenges experience stability in their lives. During 2009, Graceworks provided $3.68 million of uncompensated charity care that was not paid by user fees or government funding.

2009 Residential Care highlights More than 2,000 individuals were served through residential services of Bethany Village, Bethany Rehabilitation Center, Graceworks Enhanced Living and Graceworks Housing Services.

Bethany Village With completion of a major expansion and renovation project in

2009, the number of residents living independently in Bethany apartments, cottages and villas increased to 418. Another 60 people lived in assisted living residences, and approximately 250 people lived in the Linden House and received full-time skilled nursing and memory supportive care. Fifty-six individuals moved into a stateof-the-art Memory Support Center from our former specialized unit for persons with dementia. Bethany received a five-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities – Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CARF-CCAC). Bethany Rehabilitation Center A total of 629 older adults experienced skilled

nursing care and individualized rehabilitation programs as they recovered from surgery or hospitalization. Fifty-seven percent of the people served returned to their previous homes after recovery. Graceworks Enhanced Living More than 150 individuals with developmental

disabilities lived in safe, caring environments in 28 homes in Butler, Greene, Hamilton and Montgomery counties. Graceworks Enhanced Living received a threeyear accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International. Graceworks Housing Services More than 700 income-eligible elderly or disabled

residents experienced affordable housing in 18 Graceworks apartment communities in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. On-site employees worked to establish caring and stable environments in well-maintained and conveniently located apartment buildings. Service coordinators helped residents find and obtain needed services to allow them to age in place. 10

2009 Community Care highlights Our broad array of community-based services helped many individuals and families gain stability in their lives in the midst of trying circumstances.

Adoption Services Graceworks closed its program of adoption services on April 30,

2009. The decision came after years of careful deliberation, applying organizational values to factual reality, in response to societal trends, changes in international regulations and an increase in competing adoption providers. Staff continued to work with clients and employees during their transition. Graceworks recognizes and appreciates the significance and deep meaning associated with placement of more than 2,100 children with families, including over 1,000 children from 36 other countries, in its more than 40 years of providing adoption services. Consumer Credit Counseling Service More than 3,600 people experienced

one-on-one financial counseling, and Graceworks helped 1,950 people manage their debts through the Consumer Credit Counseling Service debt management program. Graceworks housing counselors assisted 33 families to become homeowners and helped 617 families avoid foreclosure. Over 1,200 individuals received bankruptcy pre-filing counseling and nearly 500 individuals received bankruptcy pre-discharge financial education. Approximately 2,700 individuals learned how to manage their finances through financial education classes or workshops. Another 3,400 individuals learned about Consumer Credit Counseling Service through outreach presentations. An additional 4,300 individuals benefited from responses by Consumer Credit Counseling Service to financially-related inquiries. Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program In mid-October 2009,

Graceworks received funding to begin providing support to households at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Thirteen households, consisting of 27 individuals, received financial assistance with rent and rent arrears to prevent them from losing their housing. Interfaith Care Team Ministry A total of 64 families received life-skills education, family

mentorship, advocacy and support through case management services in their homes in targeted neighborhoods. Services were made possible through an ecumenical partnership with Catholic Social Services. A total of 671 individuals received material and financial assistance and referrals to support their basic and emergency needs. Once Around Shop and Emergency Assistance Program A total of 5,591 individuals

received food, clothing or financial assistance for shelter, utilities and medications through the Preble County Emergency Assistance program. Thousands more received affordable clothing and household items at the Once Around Shop in Eaton. Senior Companion Program A total of 404 older persons were able to maintain independence in their own homes with assistance through friendly visits and respite care. Elderly persons in Montgomery, Miami, Preble, Greene and Clark counties received visits from 50 trained volunteers who gave 41,993 hours of faithful service. As part of the National Senior Service Corps, Senior Companions offer companionship, friendship and light assistance to mostly elderly persons who strive to maintain an independent lifestyle.

Residents move into new Memory Support Center Last April and May, 56 Bethany Village residents who experience Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia moved into a new home that matches in quality the unique blend of compassion and competence delivered by Graceworks staff. The new Memory Support Center, with private rooms and home-like gathering spaces indoors and outdoors, affords residents a greater sense of comfort, security and satisfaction, enhancing the already high quality of memory supportive care. From April 2007 to April 2009, Graceworks Lutheran Services completed construction of a major expansion and renovation project that is transforming the Bethany community: • E xterior and interior renovation of the Vista Place residential building; • 30 new villa residences; • 3 0 spacious apartments, parking garage and outdoor plaza deck; • Village Center, for social events, fitness, education and arts; • 56-room Memory Support Center. Graceworks held dedication events in April 2009 for residents, church and community leaders, and the public.

Graceworks Housing Services improves communities Residents enjoy an enhanced experience of home in five Graceworks Housing Services communities as a result of improvements made possible by refinancing original loans. Graceworks spent over $573,000 to complete improvements, including: • Apartment rehabilitation, Martin Luther Community, Dayton; • Kitchen redesign, Messiah Community, Urbana, Ohio; • Screened-in porches, Trinity Community, Union City, Ind.; • Community room, St. Paul Trinity Community, Maysville, Ky.; • New windows, parking lot, Good Shepherd Community, Greenfield, Ind.
