Project about HEED in UC. Berkely

Project 1: Adventurer’s Club Academic Studio Project Location: Los Angeles, California Date: 09/2014-12/2014 Professor: Warren Techentin

The project is designed for the adventurers. The concept comes from the Amazon jungle, the facade comes from the big leaves, the structure comes from the trunks, the space form comes from the rain drops. Firstly, the desinger put three floors on the ground. The first floor is an open-space floor, the second floor is a private floor, and the third floor is a public floor. Then, the designer uses rain drop shaped cell and inserts them in-between each two floors. The other one main element is the column which connect the inside and the outside. It can also collect water to irrigate the plants in the first floor. For the facade, the designer uses fabric which enables the people on the street to see throught the facade. The fabric also aims to vague the limit of the inside and the outside. For the function, the first floor is mainly the offices, the street bar; the second floor is designed for the adventurers’ room; and the third floor is for dining and meeting.

The facade is designed in grasshopper which imitate the shape and form of the big leaves in the amazon jungle. For the material, the designer uses fabric which seems transparent enough to let people see through but still cannot see clearly what’s happening inside. In this way, the designer would like to vague the inside and the outside. The irregular arrangement of the louvers shows the rhythm of the nature life.

Project 2: Additional Building for architecture school Academic Studio Project Additional Building for architecture school Location: Los Angeles, California Date: 01/2014-03/2014 Professor: Patrick Tighe Team Member: Meng Zhang & Bing Li

The project is designed for the Architecture school. The site is in-between the two buildings in architecture school, the concept is to realize the mixed-use function of this building. The designers plan to break the block of each floor so that students in each floor can see what the other people are doing. In front of this building is a series of small spaces which accommodate the exhibition, it’s like an advertisement for architecture school. Different paints are hanged on the wall and people who walks by can see what’s on the wall and walks in to communicate with the students here. Art can be inspired by communication and sharing. The additional building accommadates the function for exhibition, studio, offices for teachers, meeting rooms and auditorium. The first floor is an open-space floor, people gather together here and it allows plants to grow here. The second floor is the main entrance. A big stair whcih welcomes people to enter starts from the first floor and finally ends here

Project 5: Academic Studio Project Reformation of Old Town District Location: Sichuan, China Date: 01/2012-03/2012 Professor: Ang Hu

This project is designed for the homeless people and the low-income people. There are many migrant labors in Chengdu city, they live in really crowded district with low hygiene environment. The main problems for this district is the chaos of pedestrian, the bycicle lines and the mixed use of the street for walking and commercial. To improve their living conditions and the chaos function in this district, the government held this competition. The main concept of the designer is to create a flexible residential community to accommodate different uses. Firstly, the designer designs a small unit for single people. And then, small units gather together and combine with each other to provide more uses, such as families and old people who live alone here.
