Hayley Paige

I’VE been a called many things in my time - a list too long and largely inappropriate for this column. But stand-up comedy is my game and my skin is thick, so it’s not often I’m caught off guard by an insult. However, I was recently stopped in my tracks when I was called a ... bridezilla!

F

resh, lively, and confident, Hayley Paige embraces sweet femininity with a touch of edginess. Alluring contrasts are glimpsed in pairings like twinkle and matte, giving each dress an unmistakable charisma that enhances the bride’s own captivating charm. Balance is found in the union of textured

details such as hand appliquéd lace and flutters of sheer fabric, evoking a feeling of whimsical refinement. And as a finishing touch each dress is named, bringing to life its unique spirit. These effortless, flirty feminine silhouettes all say one thing something wonderful is about to happen.”

Childhood Wedding Dresses

Caroline is wearing Eternity Bride and Jo is wearing ‘Levina’ by La Sposa.

>> We started the photoshoot

at Caroline’s family home in Woodlands, Dorset where they all used to play together when they were young organising treasure hunts, having afternoon tea by the pond and making mud pies!

www.jlmcouture.com

We then headed to Sandbanks Beach, Poole, Dorset (minus Sarah who couldn’t make it) for some late afternoon September sunshine (which as you can imagine, caused a few turned heads). Having known all of these girls since school myself and married to Hayley, it was also an amazing experience for me to photograph them all together, especially after shooting Katy’s, Jo’s and Caroline’s big days. It was made even more special for

me to photograph my wife in her wedding dress! Emma is wearing ‘Heidi’ by Sassi Holford, Katy is wearing ‘Palermo’ by Kathy Ireland, Hayley is wearing Ellis Bridal, Caroline is wearing Eternity Bride and Jo is wearing ‘Levina’ by La Sposa. Sarah, however, wore a spare dress for the shoot as she made her actual dress into a christening gown for both her children’s christenings. A massive thank you to all the girls for getting together for this shoot which we started planning back in 2012! And a huge thank you to husbands Mike and Barry for their help on the day and not forgetting Emma’s brother Jack as my superb assistant for the shoot.

BARCELONA

MINI Short skirt that falls above the knee. Ideal for slim figures and a more casual ceremony.

14

MERMAID Fits closely to the body throughout and flares out below the knee. Looks best on hourglass figures as it highlights curves; not ideal for pear or round shapes as it accentuates the midsection.

EMPIRE Features a high waistline, creating & highlighting natural curves. Ideal for small busts and petite frames as it gives the illusion of elongating the body and camouflaging a heavy bottom or thick waist.

A

s tradition, Pronovias closed Barcelona Bridal Week and did so with a bang on Friday evening. The Spanish fashion house flaunted its spectacular collection of wedding dresses and proved that year after year, it still deserved to bag the coveted spot. The event was a particularly special one for Pronovias as it was celebrating its

50th anniversary and “50 years of dressing dreams,” as the brand’s president Alberto Palatchi said his opening speech. Model after model sashayed down the runway in romantic gowns featuring beaded embellishments, floral lace overlay, sweetheart necklines, full ball gown skirts and such. Czech beauty Karolina

Kurkova flaunted the more daring designs, which included an embroidered lace gown with sheer nude panels and another dress that showed off a thigh-high split. A favourite with celebrities, the Pronovias bridal show drew in a wealth of famous faces, with Bar Refaeli making an appearance and Camila Alves spotted sitting front row next to Alberto.

A-LINE

TRUMPET

Skirt falls between the knee and the ankle.Works for most body types and allows you to show off your heels !

Features a fitted bodice through the waist that gently flows out to the ground, resembling the outline of the letter “A”. Ideal for most body types, particularly if trying to disguise a heavy bottom figure.

Smililar to the Mermaid, complements a curvy figure, but flares higher, typically starting from the mid-thigh.

CRAFTY BRIDES

Miriam is the epitomes of the in modern bride: a crafty and creative dynamo who wants to cut costs, injecting personality and fashion an inimitable and personal wedding day. DIY wedding inspiration is flourishing on bridal blogs and is now also a dutiful component of mainstreams wedding magazines such as Bride to Be as well as quirkier titles like Hello May.

Brides today don’t feel as beholden to traditions. Weddings used to be about the formalities and pretentiousness, but there has been backlash against that. There’s definitely a desire among modern brides to customise their day, and to create a day that really represents them.

An online peruse of Pinterest, Etsy and even Instagram will turn up almost every handwrought wedding artefact that is eaten, worn, when the happy tied around a napkin, suspended from a rafter carried off by guests in the little bag. Somewhere between the days when the parents of the bride traditionally paid for the blessed event and when the happy couples started paying for their own, vintage-inspired, countrychic, rustic-bohemian weddings became the “I do du jour.

Blackboard signs are a simple way to direct guests.

Ask family and friends to save jars in the leadup to the wedding.
