Energy Strategies and Incentives for New Construction
Think Energy-efficient buildings mean more than highly specialized materials and innovative architectural, electrical, and mechanical systems. Better buildings mean better business — a source of tangible, lasting competitive advantage. Efficiency is a process, driven by careful planning and smart choices. As you plan for new construction, we encourge you to learn about and capitalize on better technologies and practices to reduce operating expenses, improve building performance and increase facility value. National Grid brings energy efficiency within reach. Our experienced professionals will help you identify opportunities to create a superior business environment and control energy costs. We look forward to working with you.

Think Revenue In the retail environment, daylighting not only brightens the space, it can boost sales. One retailer found its stores with skylighting sold 40% more than its equivalent non-skylit outlets. [High Performance Lighting]

Think Liberal use of natural light brightens, warms, and transforms a building. Coupled with energyefficient lighting fixtures and controls, natural light can reduce energy consumption by as much as 20%, while creating a visual environment that enhances employee productivity and comfort. Daylighting, high efficiency fluorescent lighting, and other lighting choices are bright ideas for any business. Let the energy efficiency professionals at National Grid help you create a building that does more, with less energy.

Think
High efficiency HVAC equipment not only heats, cools, and ventilates buildings — it saves energy. It creates an indoor environment that fosters great work and lower operating costs. Ensuring the thermal, visual, and acoustic comfort of employees, customers, and tenants is smart business and can be achieved when considered in the planning phase of new construction.
Think Benefits Increasing worker productivity by as little as 1% by providing natural light, good ventilation, and comfortable temperatures can produce financial returns many times that of energy costs.

Think
Premium efficiency motors, variable speed drives, high efficiency heating, water heating, and improved compressed air systems are changing the way work gets done. This new generation of machine power allows manufacturers to increase production and reduce energy consumption. Best of all, plant managers gain greater control of the production process and compete from a position of advantage. By building these technologies into a plant’s original design, industrial-sized benefits accrue from day one.
Think Power Combustion controls contribute to cleaner and more efficient operations. Variable speed drives can cut energy consumption in half by delivering only as much power as each application requires.
Think
The greatest potential for improved energy and business performance derives from thinking outside — and inside — the box. The envelope of the building, from walls and roofing to high performance windows, is just as critical as the electrical and mechanical systems found within. Considering all these elements together provides the opportunity to maximize building performance and value. National Grid advocates and facilitates a comprehensive approach to building design. Our professionals offer more than advice on specific requirements and systems. We become part of your planning team as you conceive, design, and spec your new building, inside and out.
Think Affordable National Grid makes efficiency affordable, too. Our design services and incentives for new technologies boost the return on your building investment.
In addition to intensive involvement in the energy-efficient design of your new building, and financial incentives that pay up to 75% of the incremental costs over less efficient equipment and systems, National Grid is pleased to offer a range of related services: Commissioning Provided by an independent contractor, this service verifies that the complex building system is operating according to its design intent. Advanced Buildings™ Advanced Buildings, integrated with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (USGBC LEED) accredited national program, is a tool for design teams wishing to create high performance commercial buildings that stand out for their energy efficiency and healthy environments. Advanced Buildings offers a simplified step-by-step approach for designing efficient small- to medium-sized buildings, while also providing work-saving tools for professionals already experienced in sustainable design. High Performance Lighting This regional consortium is dedicated to influencing lighting design toward quality, comfort, and energy efficiency in commercial buildings. The consortium’s intent is to develop, promote, and apply useful tools for the selection and installation of lighting systems. Not all programs are available in all states. Please see your Account Executive for additional details.
