Biome Landscape Studio, LLC offers a progressive and pragmatic way forward in weaving together landscapes, ecology and conservation by recognizing the intrinsic bond between human and ecological systems at global scales and moving us toward an understanding of how to design, live in and manage our immediate biosphere here in order to have a beneficial local and in turn global impact. The natural forms and d processes continue to be the benchmark for measuring the success of the projects— how the embedded narratives that makes a “place is reflected in the assessment of multi-layered patterns of regional sites right down to design of the smallest construction detail.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
SYSTEMS DESIGN APPROACH Oriented towards pragmatism and sound technical parameters, our approach is grounded in sustainability of site and landscape design; one that encourages designs that integrate systems of water, soil, and vegetation to create a “green infrastructure” that also serves as iconic site amenity. The designs integrate the open space structure of the site with the built environment to create landscapes that facilitate ecosystem restoration, encourage responsible land and water management, and the innovative use of energy and renewable resources while at the same time forging a symbiotic relationship with the occupants.
RESEARCH AND DESIGN TO FIND NEW SYNERGIES Our team uses the research findings in the aspects of water, soil and vegetation to continually improve design outcomes thus reiterating that there is room for dialogue to have a dynamic positive change in the outcomes.
EXPLORE”LEFTOVER” SPACES TO MAXIMIZE BENEFITS Using principles of “designing with nature” and identifying the interstitial spaces as the complex ecological corridors which can have an impact in creating regenerative landscapes.
LEARNING FROM THE PAST – RECOGNIZING THE PRESENT – PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Awareness of the past is key in integrating the lessons learnt into creating the present while at the same time leaving room for dynamics to take over for the future.
LAYERED DESIGN (OLD AND NEW) Layering is not just about the landforms but about the intersection of the different ecosystem dynamics. The patterns created from layering of the historical context, functional and cultural systems creates resilient landscapes that are reflection of landscapes that can survive the test of time by adapting and regenerating.

Trained as both a landscape architect and an architect, Manisha Kaul is a Principal Landscape Architect at Biome Landscape Studio. Her primary interests as a designer lie in creating harmony and balance between the built and the natural worlds. Manisha’s expertise ranges from integrating stormwater management practices and techniques at both site landscapes to watershed scales; creating new and enhancing existing ecological systems. She has managed planning and site design implementation projects of numerous academic and residential/mixed-use campuses both in the United States and internationally. These projects focused on using the site as a resource and developing site-specific design typologies for interpreting and visualizing the complex ecological processes in the context of mixed-use landscapes.
