Go where the wild things are July 14, 2014 in Adventures, National For lovers of wilderness, any encounter with a wild animal is bound to have an impact – sometimes a literal one. But even the best storyteller can’t hold a crowd talking about the time they saw a marmot licking a rock (trust us). Some animals are just plain cooler than others. So if you’re going to go on a search for wildlife, don your pith helmet and take one of the expeditions below.
Seek Kyrzygstan’s snow leopards
With the exception of Bigfoot, there’s probably no wildlife sighting more prized than that of the snow leopard. That’s partly the fault of the late Peter Mattheisen, whose book “The Snow Leopard” graces the shelves of pretty much every hostel or hikers’ shelter from Berkeley to Kathmandu. The cats are extremely rare (biologists estimate there are less than 7,000 worldwide), and live deep in the mountains of Central Asia, where travel is physically demanding and permits are difficult to obtain. So there are no guarantees of sightings from the folks at Biosphere Expeditions, who lead snow leopard expeditions in Kyrgystan’s Tien Shan mountains. The expeditions are “working holidays,” in which participants will conduct surveys of snow leopards and other local fauna.
