1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS In the first half of this semester, we have explored three different tectonics, which are “Point, Line, and Plane“, “Mass“, and “Frame and Infill“ respectively. Through the process of drawing and model making, we have challenged the conventions and pushed ourselves to dig into the potentials of the three tectonics. Exhibition in the National Gallery of Victoria. This is a picture of great contrasts: horizontal and vertical/black and white. There are only straight lines within this space, and several of connected lines could form a plane. The variation line weight is a great way to enrich the hierarchical structure of the picture.

DESIGN CONCEPT My idea was mainly originated from the exploration of the urban form, which has many key elements. I extracted those urban pieces out and found that the relationship between the building, streets, and districts is fundementally the relationship between points, lines, and planes. As is inspired by the precedent, two different materials are utilized here to create a strong contrast between the vertical and horizontal elements. To enhance the visual impact, I also added thick oblique lines as well as challenged the boundaries of the base plane with lines pointing out of it.

Instead of looking for architectural precedent, I found that the abstract drawings are more fascinating in demonstrate the sense of mess and disorder that I wanted to espress in my mass drawings.

DESIGN CONCEPT My theme for this series of drawing is Dark Forest. In my opinion, mass is not all about a regular shape with black color filled within it. It could contain much richer variations and information within it. Therefore, the DARK FORREST here means that however plain a thing looks like, if you look a it carefully, observe it by you heart rather than eyes, you may find a forest in it. In this series of drawings, I played with the scale. The first one is of the biggest scale, like a karst cave, with all the stalatite penetrating through. Then I zoom in, I can see that the stalactite is not just a smooth mass structure, but actually it is a series of root-like structureintertwining together. Then I further zoom in, I found that the surface of the root-like structure is not smooth at all. It actuall consists of countless little mass squeezing with each other. The reason why I use circle to frame my drawing is because I want to create a sense of scope. It is like a man is observing through a telescope.

DESIGN CONCEPT In this model, I mainly explored the concept of “Symmetry & Asymmetry“ and “Balance and Imbalance“. Consisting of the repetition of those regular cubes, this model in all forms a very asymmetry shape which is not satble enough to hold its own weight. The whole structure is tilted to one side, however, with the suppor of another cuble, the balance of the whole system is achieved at single connecting point. The infill here is expressed in the forms of lies and surfaces.

The main idea of my conceptacle was about interlocking loops. What I have taken from the Point Line Plane exercise was the idea of contradictorary effect created by two lines intersecting with each other and the space created by the insection may have interesting qualities to explore. Then, to create volume, I changed the form of lines into the form of mass. The relationship of balance and imbalance proposed in my Frame & Infill exercise is incorporated here as well. Though seemingly imblances, the whole system is self-balanced actually.

My selected side is on this part marked by the star. The reasons that I choose this location are mainly out of the following four aspects. The location, circulation, time allocation and topography.
LANDINGS EXISTING ARTWORKS
The herring island is located in the Yarra River. The three sides of it are close to plantings, residency and high way. So, the most desirable view for me should be able to see the green and the river at the same time, while be far away from the traffic. In the circulation analysis we can see that people mainly move along the existing roads, and there have already exists three buildings on this side, so this end is usually where people arrive at in the end of their trip. The time allocation analysis shows that people tend to spend a relatively long time here since they don’t get here directly, so when walking to this end of the island, people tend to get some rest here. The beautiful view here also prolongs the time people staying here. According to the topography map, there is also a gentle slope here. Therefore, it is very ideal to build a pavilion here for those who come and rest here. People could get refreshed here and continue their journey back. More importantly, the view here is among the best on the island so the experience here would add a perfect moment to people’s weekend trip

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN In my interpretation, the secret is behind what you see. Therefore, my design is not necessarily to be concealed or hidden. You can see it, but sometimes the truth is not like what you have seen. Thus I mainly play with the idea about what you can see and what you cannot see. The arrayed concrete cubes of Holocaoust Memorial Berlin has inspired my design to a great extent. Such arrays have the dual quality of known and unknown. The similar forms of the concrete are expected but not ascertained, which caters to my design concept very well.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT On further developing my design, I explored the underground space in comparison with the above ground space. I tried to create an illogical and complicated underground space with tunnelstresending, descending and intersecting with each other. Add to that, I further explored the materiality through the model making process. By using two kinds of perspex with contrasting colours, a very fancy visual impact could be created, which could in turn fully address the comparison I intend to create.

In retrospect, I have learnt three different tectonics in the first half of the semester. Through the carefully resarch and explorations of the three basic tectonics, I began to understand the fundamental architectural language, and learn how to compose them into a fine design. In the second half of this semester, we have conducted a completed project, starting with the site analysis, then continue to develop the conceptacle, and then build and develop our design on the basis of it. On finishing the project, now I am equipped with a better knowledge of the basic processes of an architectural design. For instance how could we analysis the site with quality, how do we select relevant information rather than including all, how a conceptacle works and how to lay out the presentation poster, etc. During the model making process for the final project, I began to incorporate softwares in the design and fabrication out of my own wish. I get to understand their convenience and limitations through my own experiences. I also tried to use laser cut to fabricate a model for the first time, how to present an idea with nultiple medias,etc, and I am quite satisfied with the outcome.
4.0 REFLECTION
In all, I can clearly see how I grow and progress in the semester on reflecting back. As the first studio I have taken in MSD, it has laid a solid foundation for my future study. I have enjoyed the subject very much.
