Abstracts (where supplied) Dr Colm Prendergast My experience as a clinical lead, clinical director and medical director In this talk I shall outline some of the challenges that face a modern radiology department and share strategies I have learnt from my clinical management experience to address them. I shall explore the role of the clinical director describing critical skills and the importance of managing key relationships. Some of the common problems that may be encountered in a medical management role will be described along with coping strategies. I shall explain the differences in working at different levels of medical management and how the lessons learnt may be applied to managing a department more successfully. I will review how the imaging team will need to adapt to the changing health care environment and the advantages to all members of the team in engaging in the process. I shall look at how the delivery of radiology training has changed and the role radiologists play not only as teachers and trainers, but also as role models. The lessons learnt on being a successful training department will be shared and how this may enrich the careers of those who work there. Dr David Grant Project management from its conception to delivery The management of change is an inherent component of any project management initiative. The importance of planning, communication and team building are explored and the relevance of Prince 2 Methodology Project management is explained. The need for realistic design and evaluation of the business plan is the foundation stone of successful project design. The change in mind-set required for successful project implementation is an extremely important aspect of the process and one which needs to be addressed if failure is to be avoided. It is often of equal importance to the initiative itself. An analysis of personality types is provided together with some suggestions for a successful implementation. The change process may be quite painful and requires perseverance, but the provision of adequate planning, training and support, can often overcome resistance to change. The importance of communication and the identification of clinical need is emphasised. Techniques for bringing reluctant adopters on-side are discussed. Educational aims: • Highlight the importance of the change process as an integral part of project management. • Explain the key steps involved in project management. • Describe the PRINCE 2 Methodology. Learning outcomes: • Gain an insight into different personality types. • Adopt strategies for dealing with difficult people. • Understand the need for a business case, team building and ongoing review of any initiative.

Dr Caroline Allum CCGs and primary Care - 7 day a week imaging and beyond The NHS is currently facing a massive financial challenge. I will touch on the concept of Value Based healthcare and give examples of how benchmarking can help with the challenge and how important collaboration is between organisations. I will also address the quality agenda and how we can make best use of finances in the department. Educational aims: An understanding of the context in which radiology departments currently operate and of how to influence the agenda pro-actively. Learning outcomes: • Ability to assess where home departments could influence the agenda with CCGs. • Confidence to start a discussion with the departmental team. Dr Caroline Allum Appraisal and revalidation: what does this mean for me? Since the start of revalidation in December 2012 more than 25,000 doctors have been revalidated. I will explore the reasons behind revalidation, how the revalidation process works and the aim of enhanced appraisal with good medical practice at its core.
Educational aims: Understanding of the appraisal and revalidation system. Learning outcomes: • Application of knowledge obtained to personal appraisals. • Articulate the reasons behind revalidation.
