NEEDLESAND EXTRAS

1 pair 4.50mm Knitting Needles for Jacket and Hat;A4.50mm Circular Needle for Jacket, or size that gives correct tension.Ayarn needle; 1 stitch holder and 3 buttons for Jacket

TENSION

19 sts and 36 rows to 10 cm over garter st, using 4.50mm needles. These items have been worked on bigger needles than normally recommended.

JACKET YOKE

Beg Right Sleeve - Using pair 4.50mm needles and C1, cast on 46 (50-54-58-60) sts. Beg garter st stripes – Using C1, knit 2 rows garter st (1st row is RS).

Using C2, knit 2 rows garter st.

Using C1, knit 2 rows garter st.

Using C3, knit 2 rows garter st.

Last 8 rows form stripes throughout.

Cont in stripes until work measures 19 (23-27-32-37) cm from beg (noting 4 cm has been allowed for fold back of cuff), working last row on WS.

Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark end of sleeve.

Beg Upper Back and Right Front - Cont in garter st stripes until work measures 6.5 (7.5-9-10-10.5) cm from coloured threads, working last row on WS.

Divide for Neck – Next row – K23 (25-27-29-30), turn.

Cont on these 23 (25-27-29-30) sts for rem of Right Front and dec one st at neck edge (inside edge) in every foll alt row until 15 (17-18-20-20) sts rem. Work 1 (3-3-5-5) row/s.

Next row (RS) – K2, yfwd to make a st, K2tog, [K3 (4-4-5-5), yfwd to make a st, K2tog] twice, K1 (1-2-2-2) = 3 buttonholes.

Knit 2 rows garter st. Cast off loosely knitways on WS.

With RS facing, using pair 4.50mm needles, join appropriate colour to rem 23 (25-27-29-30) sts, cont in garter st stripes for 12 (13-14-15-16) cm for back neck, working last row on WS.

Leave these sts on a stitch holder

Beg Left Front - Using pair 4.50mm needles, cast on 15 (17-18-20-20) sts using same colour as for cast off edge of Right Front.

Work 4 (6-6-8-8) rows in garter st stripes as for Right Front.

Keeping garter st stripes correct, inc one st at neck edge in next row (WS row), then in every foll alt row until there are 23 (25-27-29-30) sts. Work 1 row

Joining row (RS) – Knit across Left Front sts, then knit across sts from Back stitch holder = 46 (50-54-58-60) sts.

Cont in garter st stripes for a further 6.5 (7.5-9-10-10.5) cm, working last row on WS.

Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of Left Sleeve. Cont in stripes until work measures approx 19 (23-27-32-37) cm from beg, ending with a 2 row stripe of C1. Cast off knitways.

LOWER BACKAND FRONTS

Using mattress st, join sleeve seams to coloured threads, reversing seam for approx 4 cm at cuffs. With RS facing, using circular 4.50mm needle and C1, knit up 26 (30-34-36-38) sts evenly along side edge of yoke of Left Front to coloured threads of Left Sleeve, knit up 46 (52-60-66-72) sts evenly along side edge of yoke of Back to coloured threads of Right Sleeve, then 26 (30-34-36-38) sts evenly along side edge of yoke of Right Front = 98 (112-128-138-148) sts.

Knit in garter st stripes until work measures approx 16 (20-26-29-32) cm, ending with 2 rows of C1. Cast off loosely knitways.

EDGING

With RS facing, using circular 4.50mm needle and C1, knit up 46 (54-66-74-80) sts evenly along right front edge, 8 (8-10-10-10) sts evenly around right front neck, 23 (25-27-29-29) sts evenly along back neck, 8 (8-10-10-10) sts evenly around left front neck, then 46 (54-66-74-80) sts evenly along left front edge = 131 (149-179-197-209) sts. Knit 3 rows garter st. Cast off loosely knitways.

FINISHING

DO NOTPRESS.Turn back cuffs. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

HAT (worked sideways)

Using pair 4.50mm needles and C1, cast on 38 (40-42-44-46) sts. Beg garter st stripes – Work in garter st stripes as for Back of Jacket until work measures 4 cm from beg, working last row on WS.

Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark fold for brim. Cont in garter st stripes until work measures 28 (30-32-32-34) cm from coloured threads, working last row on WS.

Tie a second coloured thread at each end of last row to mark fold for brim. Cont in garter st stripes for a further 4 cm, working last row on RS with a C1 stripe, thus completing brim. Cast off loosely knitways.

FINISHING

DO NOTPRESS. Fold hat in half so that cast on and cast off edges meet, matching coloured threads. Using mattress st seam, join side edges together, reversing seam for brim. Fold brim over onto RS. Using C1, make 2 pom poms and attach a pom pom to each top corner of hat.
