YARN

Willow DK 100g x 2 (2-3-3) balls

NEEDLES AND EXTRAS

A pair 4mm Knitting Needles, 1 spare 4mm Knitting Needle (for Jumper) or size that gives correct tension. A yarn needle. 2 stitch holders for Hat.

TENSION

22 sts and 30 rows to 10 cm over stocking st, using 4mm needles.

JUMPER

First Sleeve

Using 4mm needles, cast on 27 (29-31-33) sts.

Knit 4 rows garter st (1st row is RS).

5th row – K1, inc in next st, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, K1 = 29 (31-33-35) sts.

Cont in garter st, inc one st (as before) at each end of every foll 6th (8th-8th-10th) row until there are 39 (41-45-47) sts.

Cont without shaping until work measures

14 (17-21-26) cm from beg, working last row on WS. Note – Record the number of rows worked from last inc row to this point for other sleeve.

Beg Body

Cast on 31 (37-43-47) sts at beg of next 2 rows = 101 (115-131-141) sts.

Beg patt – 1st row – K6 (hem), P4, K5, P4, knit to last 19 sts, P4, K5, P4, K6 (hem).

2nd and foll alt rows – K6, P13, knit to last 19 sts, P13, K6.

3rd row – K6, P2tog, P2, K2, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K2, P2, P2tog, knit to last 19 sts, P2tog, P2, K2, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K2, P2, P2tog, K6.

5th row – K6, P2tog, P1, K2, yfwd, K3, yfwd, K2, P1, P2tog, knit to last 19 sts, P2tog, P1, K2, yfwd, K3, yfwd, K2, P1, P2tog, K6.

7th row – K6, P2tog, K2, yfwd, K5, yfwd, K2, P2tog, knit to last 19 sts, P2tog, K2, yfwd, K5, yfwd, K2, P2tog, K6. 8th row – As 2nd row.

Rows 1 to 8 incl form patt.

Cont in patt until work measures 6.5 (7.5-8.5-9.5) cm from cast on for Body, working last row on WS.

Divide For Neck Opening – Next row – Patt 44 (51-58-63), cast off next 13 (13-15-15) sts for neck opening, patt to end. Keeping patt correct, cont on these 44 (51-58-63) sts for 10 (11-11-12) cm, working last row on WS. Break off yarn. Leave sts on needle.

With WS facing, rejoin yarn to rem 44 (51-58-63) sts and using 4mm spare needle, cont for 10 (11-11-12) cm, working last row on WS.

Joining row (RS) – Patt 44 (51-58-63), turn, cast on 13 (13-15-15) sts, turn, patt across 44 (51-58-63) sts from spare needle = 101 (115-131-141) sts.

Cont in patt for 6.5 (7.5-8.5-9.5) cm from joining row, working last row on WS, thus completing patt. Working garter st for rem, cast off 31 (37-43-47) sts at beg of next 2 rows = 39 (41-45-47) sts.

Second Sleeve

Work same amount of rows from this point to last st increased on other sleeve, working last row on WS. Next row – K1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. Cont dec one st (as before) at each end of every foll 6th (8th-8th-10th) row until 29 (31-33-35) sts rem. Work 4 rows. Cast off loosely.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st, join side and sleeve seams. Darn in ends.

HAT

Ear Flaps (make 2)

Using 4mm needles, cast on 5 sts.

1st row (RS) – Knit.

2nd row – K1, (inc in next st, K1) twice = 7 sts.

3rd row – Knit.

4th row – K1, inc in next st, knit to last 3 sts, inc in next st, K1 = 9 sts.

Rep last 2 rows until there are 17 sts.

Knit 2 rows garter st.

Leave rem sts on a stitch holder. Break off yarn.

Patt Panel (worked sideways)

Using 4mm needles, cast on 15 sts.

1st row – K1, P4, K5, P4, K1.

2nd and foll alt rows – K1, P13, K1.

3rd row – K1, P2tog, P2, K2, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K2, P2, P2tog, K1.

5th row – K1, P2tog, P1, K2, yfwd, K3, yfwd, K2, P1, P2tog, K1.

7th row – K1, P2tog, K2, yfwd, K5, yfwd, K2, P2tog, K1. 8th row – As 2nd row. Rows 1 to 8 incl form patt.

Cont in patt until work measures approx 35 (40-43-47) cm from beg, ending with an 8th patt row. Cast off.

Lower Body

Using 4mm needles, cast on 11 (13-15-17) sts and knit across these sts, with RS facing, knit across 17 sts from first ear flap stitch holder. Break off yarn. Holding sts on right hand needle, cast on 21 (27-29-35) sts onto left hand needle and knit across these sts, with RS facing, knit across 17 sts from second ear flap stitch holder. Break off yarn. Holding sts on right hand needle, cast on 11 (13-15-17) sts onto left hand needle and knit across these sts = 77 (87-93-103) sts. Next row (WS) – Knit across all sts to end. Knit a further 3 cm in garter st. Cast off loosely. Using a flat seam, neatly stitch one side edge of patt panel to cast off edge of lower body, easing to fit.

Upper Body

With RS facing and using 4mm needles, knit up 77 (87-93-103) sts evenly along other side edge of patt panel.

Knit in garter st until work measures 10 (11-12-13) cm from cast on for Lower Body, working last row on WS and dec 4 (6-4-6) sts = 73 (81-89-97) sts.

Shape Crown – 1st row (RS) – K1, * K2tog, K7 (8-9-10), rep from * to end = 65 (73-81-89) sts.

Knit 3 rows garter st.

5th row – K1, * K2tog, K6 (7-8-9), rep from * to end = 57 (65-73-78) sts.

Knit 3 rows garter st.

9th row – K1, * K2tog, K5 (6-7-8), rep from * to end = 49 (57-65-70) sts.

Knit 3 rows garter st.

13th row – K1, * K2tog, K4 (5-6-7), rep from * to end = 41 (49-57-62) sts.

Knit 3 rows garter st.

17th row – K1, * K2tog, K3 (4-5-6), rep from * to end = 33 (41-49-54) sts.

Knit 1 row.

19th row – K1, * K2tog, K2 (3-4-5), rep from * to end = 25 (33-41-46) sts.

Knit 1 row.

21st row – K1, * K2tog, K1 (2-3-4), rep from * to end = 17 (25-33-38) sts.

Knit 1 row.

23rd row – K1 (1-0-1), * K2tog, K1, rep from * to last 1 (0-0-1) st/s, K1 (0-0-1) = 12 (17-22-26) sts. Break off yarn leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st, join side edges together to form centre back seam. Make a pom pom and attach securely to top of hat as pictured. Thread 6 strands of yarn each strand approx 120 cm long through cast on edge of one ear flap. Divide strands into 3 groups of 2 strands and plait. Knot end to form a tassel (as pictured). Work another plait to other ear flap. Darn in ends.
