feedsack collection inspired by historic fabric
The inspiration for our pattern series comes from the feedsack quilts, pillow cases and dresses made by “Granny Lou” who lives in a cabin full of vintage collectible fabric in South Carolina. Feedsacks or Chicken Linens are most remembered for the Depression era when women faced with a family to clothe, a home to make and little money to spare, repurposed these cotton fabrics for their household needs. With beginnings as sacks of flour, sugar and farm feed, these bags were upcycled by generations of resourceful, craftacular women who transformed this everyday consumer packaging into everything from underwear and aprons to bedding and curtains. Initially this innovative packaging was made of plain cotton, but by the 1920s, manufacturers started printing patterns on the sacks, and by the thirties, feedsack mania hit an all time high. It is estimated that there are twentythousand different patterns. The creativity that stemmed from such bleak days is all the more inspiring when you consider that the need to survive was the motivation, and yet they still created art. An old maxim many grandmothers would repeat – use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is not a new concept!

{fabric flag greetings} The fabric flag greeting card series incorporates a feedsack passion, an ancient cultural tradition and inspiration from the life of one Jonny Copp. Jonny was a climbing legend and exceptional human being who died in an alpine avalanche on Mount Edgar in China in May 2009. Prayer flags are used to promote peace, strength, compassion and wisdom. Their prayers become a part of the universe as the edges fray and the images fade in the elements. They are hung high in the wind to bring benefit to ALL beings. The act of hanging layers of prayer flags symbolizes life changes, renewal of hope and the acknowledgment that all life is part of a greater ongoing cycle. The thoughts & prayers card in this series was the first to be created in honor of Jonny. His spirit and soulful outlook in real life lives on through the people he touched. The message of each card sent carries with it his vim and vigor, as well as contributing to the Foundation started by his family since his death. Long live Jonny Copp. Make your own legends! A2 folded recycled paper, recycled grocery bag envelope and stitched remnant vintage fabrics from reusable feedsack packaging. Packaged in a biodegradable sleeve. Blank inside.

wood type collection
Ever intrigued by those who printed before us, wood type tells a history within its grain as the patina shines with character. The weathered inperfections make it unique down to the very letterform. Each one we collect is loved and carefully kept in its designated spot in a california job case until it is called up to represent a monogram, an initial, a name, like so many times before. History repeats itself through the love of typography.

design + letterpress What started as a serious penchant for pen and paper, a little design studio in the digital age, with a more tactile experience grew. Feathered with more than 13 years of design expertise in our cap, the BirdDog Press began spreading its wings into letterpress printing, bookbinding and a handmade approach. Letterpress is a labor of love and a hands-on intensive process. Each piece is hand-fed individually, one at a time and is considered by us to be a unique work of art. our commitment to sustainability and the tradition of letterpress The BirdDog Press chooses eco-friendly papers, inks and recyclable photopolymer plates. Originally hailing from the state of Tennessee, we clean our inky messes spitspot like good southern girls with a crisco combo in a wind-powered studio. Everything is handmade at the foot of the Rockies using and re-using every last scrap. While we incorporate some modern technologies in producing our work, there is a fierce dedication to the perpetuation of a 500-year old relief printing process and honoring the historical craft of letterpress printing, keeping these traditions alive and integrated into the overall process. founded by the family hound Back before our trusty Chandler & Price Platen press was unloaded into the studio with a heavy iron thud, we rescued a puppy from Quebec. We named her Siler, but as a German Shorthaired Pointer, our family endearingly called her by the generic term for any hunting breed – “bird dog. Later, when we rescued the century old press and put it to work, the moniker just rolled off the tongue.
