Creating Lisboa The inspiration for Lisboa was born from Birdie’s time spent in Portugal. Lisboa reimagines the vast array of dynamic pattern and design seen throughout the city’s decorative arts, with every print and colour thoughtfully chosen to be seamlessly styled together. As always, the collection presents considered and timeless design, that can be paired with past collections and your own existing pieces. The clean lines and organic form of our new jewel-toned painted Rattan Furniture adds weight to Lisboa’s table linens, soft furnishings, lamps and lampshades, whilst the opulent darker colours also sit perfectly with this season’s collection of rugs. Our new Villa Rug has been designed in bold, coordinating tones to ground a scheme, whilst the jute and wool mix Buna Rug adds textural interest. Our hero Namda Rug has been created by using a felting process, a craft indigenous to Kashmir whereby layers of wool are pressed rather than woven together. Finished with a Kashmiri chain stitch hand embroidery, it adds a wonderful artisanal finish to any interior. Back by popular demand, our much loved Bel design has returned, block printed across table linens as well as featuring in a new range of aprons, tea towels and paper napkins. Designed to sit with our new Twisted Candlesticks and existing tablewares, the Bel table linens transform the every day into an occasion. The Pentola Cotton Mache Vases and Christmas Baubles have been sustainably made using textile waste from the fashion industry and designed to create a warm and playful festive scheme. The thoughtful curation of this collection has been designed to complement modern day life and suit all interiors, providing the perfect backdrop to the new season. We hope you love discovering Lisboa, and look forward to meeting you in person at our London store at 324-326 Kings Road, London, SW3 5UR or in our Holt showroom at The Barn, Feathers Yard, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6BW.

The Inspiration Through tactile geometrics and stylised floral motifs, Lisboa celebrates the art of layering pattern - mimicking the abundant decoration found in Lisbon’s tiles whilst paying homage to Birdie’s own love for mixing prints. Each design takes inspiration from architectural details - our hero Calcada print is inspired by a pattern seen on Lisbon’s striking pavements, whilst the flowing and symmetrical Santa Maria design was born from a detail seen on an 18th Century rug in the Museum of Santa Maria Major. The city’s vibrant primary colours have been interpreted through softer tones - dusky pinks, teal washed blues and accents of bright red, nodding to the rich hues of Autumn/Winter but in warm and uplifting shades which seamlessly transition across the seasons. Lisboa’s mosaic-like designs are used across velvets, embroideries, crochets and linens - textures that layer together for an eclectic yet harmonious interior. The curated collection of new textural lampshades paired with the on-trend Abacus Bobbin Floor Lamps make a statement in any interior, whilst the intricate Crochet Throw and new collection of sumptuous cushions add visual interest.

Andrea Curtis Although Andrea’s work may look simple from a distance, up close you can see the rich details and texture, expertly crafted from layers of tissue and painted paper - adding a unique depth to each piece. Fascinated by the stories that can be told simply by a collection of objects, still life has always been Andrea’s favourite subject. Much of her work is inspired by her travels abroad and her love of plants, with flowers being a central focus in her unique language of marks and colour combinations. Q. Where did your career as a colour consultant and artist begin?

Q. What are some of your favourite colour palettes/ schemes to use in interiors?

I studied textile design in college so have always had an interest in colour and design. I started out, very many years ago, painting furniture and this soon developed into colour consultation as clients were asking for advice about colours for their homes. I’ve always intuitively had a good understanding of how colour feels in a space and how colour can pull a design scheme together. Colour consultation is a popular concept now but when I started it was quite an unusual occupation. My journey as an artist started in art college and I’ve always created art over the years, mostly bespoke pieces and wall murals for my clients as part of an interior scheme. I suppose it was during ‘lockdown’ that I decided to create a collection of work that came from my own inspiration and that really was the start of my current artistic journey, creating collections of work that tell my own story.

My personal colour scheme favourites would be a combination of blue, green and warm white, with an accent of pink or red in warm, soft tones. This combination feels calm - the warm white adds brightness, whilst the reds and pinks add a pop of fun! However, when working with client it’s very much about encouraging them to discover their own preferences and then advising them on how to create a palette for a cohesive scheme.

Q. Can you tell us a bit more about colour psychology? Colour psychology is such a fascinating subject that goes deeper than simply how colours ‘look’ but examines our emotional connection to colour. This can help us learn about ourselves and also about other people. In terms of interiors, understanding how colour connects us to a space can help us create homes that reflect our own aesthetic and make us feel good in that space. I think it’s becoming harder to express our individuality and creativity in a world of ‘comparison’ on social media, so understanding colour psychology can go a long way in giving you confidence to create a home that truly expresses you and your family.

Q. What are some of your top tips for someone looking to introduce colour to their interiors? You could start by looking around your own house for inspiration (a favourite bowl, painting etc) or Pinterest and magazines are great for moodboarding. Often this will give you an indication of the types of colours you like and the feeling you’re trying to create in your home. From this, pick out a couple of colours from your moodboard - thinking about how you want the room to feel. Do you want it to feel calm, bright, playful or dark and cosy for example - a dark, warm blue may look great in a photo but think about how that would feel in your home - if you like lots of light then it may not be for you. Next, paint your chosen colours onto large pieces of paper and pin them around the room. This is the most important thing you can do - the bigger the swatches the more you can ‘feel’ the colour in the space. Trust your intuition and try it - it’s only paint!

Georgia Hearn’s Portugese Tomato Rice, Prawns and Aioli Ingredients Serves 4 For the Rice and Prawns

For the Aioli

• • • • • • • • •

• • • • •

1 brown onion, finely chopped 1 crushed garlic clove Knob of butter 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika 250g long grain white rice 1 tin of best quality tinned tomatoes 1 litre strong chicken stock 2 or 3 large king prawns with shells per person Lemon wedges and a handful of chopped parsley to garnish

2 large egg yolks 1 heaped tbsp Dijon mustard Juice of 1 lemon 1 large crushed garlic clove 300ml of rapeseed oil

Method 1. Start by making the aioli, which can be done in advance and kept in the fridge! Crush the garlic with a pinch of salt to help it break down. Add to a bowl with the mustard, lemon juice and egg yolks. Whisk together with an electric whisk as you slowly drop in the oil - this will bring the aioli together so it forms a mayonnaise consistency. Season to taste and loosen with more lemon juice if needed. 2. Melt the butter in a frying pan on a medium high heat and add the onions. Sauté for 5 minutes or until soft and translucent before adding the garlic and paprika.

5. Whilst the rice is cooking, place the prawns in a mixing bowl with olive oil and season. Use your hands to mix, until the prawns are evenly coated. Place a griddle pan over a high heat and once piping hot, add the prawns and grill on each side for 2 minutes. 6. Divide the risotto between 4 plates, top with spoonfuls of aioli (you will have leftovers!) and the chargrilled prawns. Serve with lemon wedges and parsley to garnish. 7. Get tucking in, it’s extra special!

3. Stir continuously for a minute, then add the rice and fry for a further 2 minutes, coating the rice. 4. Next, add the tinned tomatoes and chicken stock. Lower the heat and simmer whilst stirring until the liquid is absorbed and the rice cooks to al dente.

Gabrielle Smith We caught up with ceramicist and owner of Shopatseed, Gabrielle Smith, to talk about the inspiration and design process behind her handmade ceramics. We were thrilled to work in partnership with Gabrielle to create ceramics for our AW23 shoot and love how they work with our Lisboa collection. Q. Where did your career as a ceramicist begin? My career in ceramics began quite by chance, when I was introduced to a wonderful and inspiring potter called Amanda Banham. I’d had an idea to make some hanging planters but had never done anything with clay before. We hit it off and she very kindly said she’d teach me how to make pots - so I went to her studio one morning and it was all a bit of an epiphany. She was utterly brilliant – she showed me how to hand build a pot and as soon as I got my hands on a lump of clay I realised it was all I really wanted to do. It all felt quite straightforward from there really - I didn’t consider that I would do anything else. I had this real drive to make very specific tableware that was durable, practical, robust – that looked lovely, but was also completely functional. Amanda was amazing, she taught me and let me work in her studio - and even fired all my work until I got my own kiln. She is now a wonderful friend – and my unofficial mentor. And her kindness and generosity of spirit are things I will always be very grateful for. I try to keep that in my mind and I’m very happy to offer space, support and encouragement to aspiring potters who want to come and spend time working in my studio.

it, the better the outcome - which is something I wrestle with every day. Also the way that a collection seems to have a life of its own - while I’m making my pieces they can feel quite disparate and often, it’s not until the very end when I put them on a table together that I understand how they work together. I always slightly panic about this and I am always amazed when they look like they belong together. Q. What are your top tablescaping tips? We very rarely dine in any kind of formal way, but my golden rule is to never save anything for a special occasion. Always use your favourite things, get the table linen out and light as many candles as you can. And I am a big fan of dishes at different heights. I think it doesn’t matter what you put in them, even the simplest fresh fruit or the plainest green salad will be elevated in a dish or platter that’s on legs or a stand! It also creates lots of visual interest to have things going on at multiple levels.

Q. Who/ what are you inspired and influenced by in your work? I’m an absolute magpie and I love collecting images and other treasures – - stuff I bring in from outside like moss or stones, I think it drives everyone else slightly mad! I make my own glazes and I’m always on the lookout for ideas and colour combinations that inspire. I absolutely love artists like Sarah Muir Pollard– the way she uses colour is so phenomenal. Also local artist Bethany Holmes whose representation of the outside really resonates with me. I’m also heavily influenced by my childhood the food my mum cooked and the dishes she used which ranged from vintage pieces either picked up from jumble sales, passed down by family or bought back from time we spent travelling as a family through Spain and North Africa. Q. What’s your favourite thing about what you do? This is a hard one as there’s so much I love about making pottery. I think it has to be the way I can lose myself in the process - the less I overthink

Birdie’s Foolproof Guide to Styling 1 Cushions As we approach the colder months, we naturally want to fill our homes with more warmth through soft textures and rich tones to create a cocooning effect. One of the easiest ways to achieve this is to introduce new cushions to your interior. Cushions play an important role in any room where they feature heavily, so it’s really important to choose combinations carefully. These are three of our top tips for arranging cushions that are easy to recreate at home.

Create a relaxed but considered sofa scheme that’s perfect for an informal sitting room, study or snug with a mix of texture, colour and pattern. This arrangement works with two groups of asymmetrical cushions starting with a pair of solid cushions at either end to create balance. A solid coloured velvet is a great tool for breaking up a pattern-heavy schemes like this one, whilst still adding a luxurious texture that is perfect for the winter months. Work your way forwards with smaller cushions which combine contrasting prints and varying trims, but use coordinating colours to create visual balance. A mix of florals with large and small scale geometrics and stripes will add character to your cushion arrangement and keep it from looking overly styled or rigid. We’ve echoed the accent green of the Edo Stripe in the decorative accessories and the rug as a visual thread, giving the interior an interesting but balanced feel.

2

When it comes to soft furnishings and textiles in a bedroom, we believe more is more! Textiles are crucial in any room but they are particularly powerful in a bedroom setting. An abundance of cushions and coordinating throws are key to creating a room that is inviting. As well as providing warmth, soft furnishings can give almost all the visual interest and impact you need in an interior. You could choose to keep the base of a room neutral, simply adding in cushions and throws to bring the room to life. We like to style a bed with two pairs of matching cushions - using the strongest colour at the back and then a patterned, softer tone in front. If your style is more pared back and relaxed, a large single rectangular cushion with a contrasting smaller one is a simple alternative, again featuring a different texture for interest.

3

Bring both perceived and actual warmth to hallways, bay windows and landings with some cleverly-placed soft furnishings. It’s easy for these transitional areas of a home to become a little neglected, but by introducing a few cushions, you can create both functional and welcoming spaces which have that wonderful lived-in look. We love how this landing has been transformed into a reading nook with the addition of a few cushions and a Limited Edition Suzani Throw.
