The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - October 2018
WELCOME TO
October
Autumn is well and truly here with shorter days and colder nights.
Nevertheless, we still have lots to look forward to, from Halloween festivities and fireworks to film festivals and delicious bread and butter pudding! Anyone that knows me personally knows I’m a terrible cook, however, I mastered this month’s receipe on my tod, first go! So if I can do it, anyone can!
This month marks a special occasion; it’s actually our first year anniversary of having gone subscription. As usual, I’ve been surveying readers and advertisers to find out what they’ve loved and what they could do without. The results have been very interesting, and as of next season, I’m excited to tell you that you’ll have a hugely improved and vastly fuller magazine to read! So keep your eye open for December’s issue when the new format of the magazine will launch! Until then, I wish you a fab October!

Book Review A review of After Anna, by Lisa Scottoline
When Dr. Noah Alderman lost his wife and the mother of his son to cancer at a young age, he had a hard time believing he would ever feel joy again. But years later, after meeting and marrying Maggie, he rediscovers what it’s like to have the perfect family. He and Maggie are happy and in love, and she in turn truly loves his son, Caleb. Maggie, after suffering from postpartum psychosis, going through a painful divorce, and losing her baby daughter Anna after her ex-husband takes her to France, is grateful to have found happiness again and to have a child to love and care for after so many years of loneliness. She loves her husband and adores her stepson. Everything is right in their world until an out-of-the-blue phone call turns their lives upside down. When the caller introduces herself to Maggie as her daughter Anna and says she wants to meet, Maggie is thrilled. Now 17 and having lost her father, stepmother and stepbrothers in a plane crash, Anna claims to want to reestablish a relationship with the mother she hasn’t seen since she was 6 months old. At first, Noah and Caleb are just as thrilled to have Anna in their home and a part of their family as Maggie. But as time goes on, things are not what they seem, and their peaceful world is shattered when Anna accuses Noah of unspeakable crimes. Who should Maggie believe and where does her loyalty lie? With her husband who has been completely devoted to her during their marriage, or her own daughter, whom she has missed deeply for so many years? 4

Lisa Scottoline, a New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award winning author of 30 novels, weaves a tale so emotional and involving that it is hard to put down. Plus, an unexpected turn of events towards the end leads to a stunning conclusion. To find out more about Lisa Scottoline and her books, visit https://scottoline.com/. Plan your new garden in the winter months ahead‌ Helping you revamp your garden... Creating a new garden can sometimes seem a daunting process, but it can be an enjoyable and creative experience. From carrying out the site survey, to creating the design, to tendering out the project to skilled landscaping firms for quoting, high standards can be met at every stage, so that the garden is fully integrated into the whole space, and works with the house. Although many of us look out into our gardens around Easter time, this generally 12 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - October 2018
means that a project will be in full swing throughout the summer, just when you would like to be relaxing in your new garden! Therefore, consider the re-design during the winter months. This means that any hard landscaping will have been completed by the time spring arrives, and planting can then occur at the best time for strong plant establishment. Hopefully, you can then enjoy your wonderful new garden during those precious summer months. Every garden is different, and every brief is unique. An identical plot, with the same soil and aspect, could end up with a completely different garden based upon how you wish to use the space, the hard landscaping materials and planting style.

Bread & Butter Pudding
At the heart of every great community... is great food! Inspired by leftover fried toast from one Sunday breakfast, here’s a beauty that serves six grumbly tummies! Ingredients 8 slices of left over fried toast, (cut into 3cm cubes) 100g chocolate chips 3 eggs 40g soft light brown sugar 125ml double cream
and 6cm deep) lightly with butter. Tip in the bread cubes. Toss in the chocolate chips to spread evenly among the bread cubes. Whisk together the cream, milk, eggs and light brown sugar and pour this mixture into the bread. Make sure the bread is well covered and let it sit for 10 minutes. Ensure bread is soaked through and place in the middle of the oven for 40-45 minutes. Use a fork or knife and sink it into the pudding to see if it’s done. You know it’s done when the knife pulls out dry. Ta dah! Serve with love or a neat blob of cream! Mmm...

BASIC LIFE
Charity A regular update from a brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support
With our models at our fashion show
September was a busy time at BASIC with lots of events taking place and more exciting developments with our unique Pop-up shop initiative. Mayor’s Charity We were delighted to be nominated and selected as one of the Mayor’s charities this year, with The Layden’s Community Café. Already we’ve been involved in lots of events including an epic 60 mile bike ride by the Mayor himself! More recently we had a great night at The Orwell Hotel where we held a fashion show with the clothes from BASIC stock and the models made up from members of the Layden’s and BASIC staff! We were joined by the amazing Felixstowe Children’s Choir and Ali Mack to round off a great night. Pop-up Shops It’s amazing to think that just three years ago we went around the supermarkets asking for surplus food but were unable to secure any. Now things have changed dramatically and we’re so proud to now be charity partners with Tesco, Morrisons, Co-op, Lidl, Marks and Spencer, Fare Share, The Felixstowe Bakery and Krusty Bakery!
18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - October 2018
Our latest charity partner During September we added yet another ‘A-listed’ store in Waitrose! We’re so grateful for the support of these stores and the customers who also donate. We now have a donation point in Morrisons to join those at Tesco and the Co-op at Solar – so if you’re out shopping please put an extra item in to help your neighbours! Obviously supplying three weekly pop-up shops in Felixstowe (soon to be four!) is quite a logistics exercise but somehow we manage to pull it off each week thanks to our wonderful volunteers. Of course, we also have Pop-ups weekly in Ipswich and Leytonstone and the signs are that more will be opening soon so watch this space!

Peninsular Pyrates
Take Landguard Fort after Violent Skirmish The two-day Family Fund Raising and Pirate Festival Weekend on 22nd/23rd September was a booming success with musket fire aplenty. With huge acknowledgement to Josiah Candy Productions who pulled together this wonderful event, there were several re-enactment groups who took part in an historic fantasy of fun. The groups included Peninsular Pyrates, East Norfolk Militia, CHES (Colchester Historical Enactment Society), The Sealed Knot, The Georgian Ladies and traditional musical entertainers including The Felix Stowaways and Naze Sea Shanty Singers. The event raised funds for East Anglia's Children's Hospice (EACH) and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Disregarding the east coast weather a motley band of pirates, smugglers cutthroats and wenches invaded to take the fort by storm from the Governor and his soldiers. Skirmishes and hostilities took place on both days with children treasure trail and games to encourage an interest to learn about the 'Golden age of Piracy' with drill displays and floggings aplenty. An exciting time was had by all including the Mayor & His Lady invited to dine with the pirates and experience their Golden Age. Pictures by Robin & Sue Garrod Woodbridge Camera Club.

Walking for Health A great way to start exercising Walking is our natural way of getting around but due to cars, buses, trains etc. people seem to have forgotten this. Our bodies want to walk. Sitting down all day at home or at a desk means our hip flexors become tight and our glutes become weak and lazy, and all these and everything else that comes with it means getting out and walking is very important before we all become the people in the animated film, WALL-E. Even if you are a runner, instead of doing a recovery run or doing nothing on a rest days, download a podcast and set out on a walk. If you want to meet new people or desire a structured walk, Felixstowe Walkers is a great place to start. All walks start at 10.30am (unless otherwise stated) and are about one hour long. They’re graded on distance and gradient so you can 22 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - October 2018
choose the most suitable for your current level of fitness. These walks are a perfect way to meet new people and help you keep to your new regime. Once you’ve met other like-minded folk you can go on your own walks in between the organised ones. Soon you might even feel like taking it up a notch and going longer and/or off-road. Felixstowe Walkers Next walk: Wednesday 10th October A walk along country paths from The Stables Coffee Bar, Brightwell. Meet at 10.30am and please park in the large car park to the rear of the premises. Distance 2 ¾ mile Grade 3. Stepping Out in Suffolk Another lovely group is Stepping Out in Suffolk, run by OneLife Suffolk. Theatrical Dramas Random ramblings by our local lad Those who know me will tell you that I love theatre. I’ve treaded the boards in playhouses across the county and I’ve crossed over to the dark side dressed in my black gear as crew. I’ve produced, written, reviewed productions and compered shows. I even presented a radio programme about theatre. However, there are times I just want to grab my Playbill and box of Maltesers and flounce right out of the auditorium. Why? Let me tell you dear reader. So imagine this as an example. I arrive at the Park & Ride with at least 4 hours to spare - just in case I discover I’ve left my Kleenex handy pack and antibac gel at home and need to find a Superdrug (well you never know who you’re going to be sitting next to in the stalls). I arrive at the venue in good time which allows me at least an hour and a half to soak up the theatrical atmosphere. It also allows me time to look at past show posters and say, (not too loudly) “Seen that, I was in that, I sat next to Thora Hird during that, oh and I accidently elbowed Elaine Paige in the forehead after that one!” I’m not one to boast. I grab my sweet snack of choice and prebook my interval sweet sherry and Strawberry Mivi to avoid the queues. I head to the auditorium door in eager anticipation; I’m usually first. We’re let in. I find my seat and neatly tuck my possessions away ready for the show. Bring it on. The house lights dim; my heart is pounding with uncontainable excitement. The overture’s ended, the curtain is up and I spy a glimmer of light from the corner of my eye. The velvet drapes hiding the door to the foyer have been pulled aside and there
they are... latecomers! NOOOO! I urge myself to keep calm but no, the usher’s Maglite beam is heading my way, to the row in front of mine to be precise. Yes, those six vacant flip-up seats right in front of me are theirs. One of the group is at least 6 foot 10 inches with shoulder pads and what looks like a backcombed perm reaching 2 feet either side of his head. They enter the row stopping for an age to apologise for standing on and mashing a pensioner’s Mint Imperials. They spy their seats and Mr Backcombed-Perm plonks himself directly in my sight-line. Of course, he’s left his jacket on. Just as Gary Wilmot makes an appearance for his first number the Sasquatch in front suddenly decides he wants his jacket off; he’s up again. Because of the elasticated cuffs it becomes quite a lengthy assignment, so inevitably I miss Gary’s celebrated time-step. After three toilet visits and a hoo-hah over a dropped Werthers Original ‘The Perm’ suddenly and at some volume announces, this hasn’t got anything to do with football and that’s not Gary Lineker. COMPETITIONS - QUIZ - SUDOKU - BRAIN
WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS TO THE VINTAGE VIXENS ON 3.11.18 A brand new show for the Spa - Vintage Vixens - Suffragettes to Superstars. An all-female vocal and dance delight supported by a live band. The Vintage Vixens tell the facinating story of how the mostly demure and forgotten housewife of the early 1900’s became the sassy, sultry and sophisticated rock chick of the 70’s. Starting in 1941, where women not only played a huge part in lifting people’s spirits during the war but also filled the vital factory and farm jobs that kept the army equipped and the population fed, we trace the rise and rise of girl power through their music. From an age where women were mostly portrayed as being very girly and graceful, and men were men, these girls turned the tables on society and their man and made their own way. And what a way it was, through Mary Wells and Dinah Washington via Martha Reeves and The Ronettes to Aretha Franklin, LaBelle and Cher – an era where the gloom of war was thoroughly shaken off and replaced by glitz, glamour and the disco ball. To get yourself into the draw to win a pair of tickets, answer the following question: Q One of the Vintage Vixens represented on the night will be Martha Reeves but what was her backing band called? a) Martha Reeves and the Vandellas b) Martha Reeves and the Chiffons c) Martha Reeves and the Ronettes Email your answer, full name and phone number to info@thefelixstowemagazine.com. Closing date is October 31st 2018. Winner will be notified by email. T&Cs apply. Tickets are not transferable.
