Note from the Editor
Welcome to November’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine Wow - the winter has truly set in! The heating is finally on and thick socks adorn the feet of thousands.
For this month’s cover we decided we would show off the amazing talent of some of our younger local sailors who participated in Bart’s Bash; a global sailing race in memory of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson (Gold & Silver Olympic medallist and America’s Cup sailor), who sadly passed away last year. Many took part at the Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club on September 21st, so have a look at page 4 for more on this lovely event.
You’d think that with summer over not so much would be happening in our little town, but you’d be wrong! As you read on in this month’s issue you’ll see more local record breaking, more acts of community spirit and many more things to venture out to see and do.
We’ve actually started to add more on our website blog so, if you like reading our mag, go online and see what’s new at www.thefelixstowemagazine.com/blog. We also have an active social media community too so do check out our Facebook and Twitter pages and get involved. I’ll leave you to get reading, so stay warm, be good and enjoy November! Sailors of all ages registering for the race
A quick wave for The Felixstowe Magazine readers, before he sails off again!
Next generation sailors
Bart’s Bash; a global sailing race and fundraising event with figures currently standing at 27,282 sailors in 756 sailing clubs across 67 countries, smashing the Guinness World Record for largest sailing race in 24 hours! The event was in honour of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, a great advocate for inspiring the next generation of young sailors, who sadly passed away last year. Our cover photo was taken by local photographer, Holly Brookes, of two of the ‘next generation’ sailors, Sam Rowell and Sara Stones (ranking 3rd in the Felixstowe race) on the day that the race inaugurated on 21st September 2014. The Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club was honoured to be part of such a phenomenal event and thanks to Matt Read (Lead Event Maker) and Peter (local legend and skipper for the day!) The Felixstowe Magazine was there to witness some of the action of this historic event. Check out the pictures on our website! www.thefelixstowemagazine.com/blog

Hosted by Veronica Farthing at St. Marys Church Hall with raffle of 42 gifts donated by local businesses, family and friends. They raised a whopping £1730.90!!
If you were wondering what all the green balloons and bunting were all about, or why the sudden influx of incredibly scrummy home-made cake, then here is your answer: throughout September, local people and businesses participated in the Biggest MacMillan Coffee Morning ever to raise fund for the charity!
Not only that but many also raised much needed funds and awarness for Children with Cancer UK, like Erin (below left). This is by no means a comprehensive representation of all the folks that got involved, but here are some great pictures to share with you! Well done to everyone involved! You’re all stars!!! HSBC: Thanks to Costa Coffee, Felixstowe for donating the coffee.
KW Autos, who also hosted music by the lovelyGussie and band! Erin was 22 months old when Mum Kara found a lump on her chest. She had neuroblastoma and after chemo and having her op she went into remission. Erin helped make this donation jar which holds the £210 mother and daughter raised togehter! Kara’s t-shirt says it all...
Local Barclays branch raised £233.74, matched by Barclays Bank PLC, resulting in total £467.48.

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Celebrating the many culinary cultures Felixstowe is proud to have...
French Braised Chump Chop Ingredients: 8 mutton or lamb chops (2 each for 4 people) 2 onions 2 large potatoes (plus 1 extra if needed) 1 lemon plus salt and black pepper approx. 1/2 a pint of water 1 lamb stock cube. 1 bay leaf or a sprig of mint Serves 4
Method 1. Trim the excess fat off the chops and place on a tray. Cut lemon in half and squeeze the juice over the chops. Season with salt and pepper, and leave to marinate.
2. Peel onions and slice into roundels. Likewise, peel and wash potatoes and cut into roundels 1/8th in thickness.
3. Use half the onion and spread out over the bottom of the casserole dish, likewise cover the onion in potato. Add bay leaf or sprig of mint then place four of the chops on top of the vegetables.
4. Repeat as in step number 3, but keep back some potato. Place the remaining chops on the vegetables. 5. Bring to the boil and add the stock cubes. (At this stage you can thicken the juice with either arrowroot or corn flour. Personally I prefer not to, but it’s down to your preference). Pour the stock into the dish until it just covers the top layer of chops. Cover the remaining chops with the remaining potatoes. You might find you need to peel a third potato. 6. Cover dish with foil and place into a preheated oven on the middle shelf and cook at 200 degrees centigrade for about two hours. Remove from oven and remove foil. Check stock level and if need be top up. Place dish back into the oven on the top shelf and cook until potatoes are golden brown on top.
I like this warm wintry dish served with purple sprouting broccoli, but other vegetables of your choice will do. Enjoy! Written by retired chef - Brian A. Blackmore

Cafe on the Corner
Hi, I’m Jane, the owner of The Cafe on the Corner, which has been open for three and a half years at 16 Hamilton Road. I worked at Tesco for five years before I made the decision, six months ago, to leave there and run my own business. I have always wanted to run my own cafe and as my three sons are now grown up, I thought this would be the ideal time to start my own business.
One of the best things about working at Tesco was meeting and talking to the customers. You hear some interesting local facts and stories. We get a lot of local people in the cafe; I have made some good friends already and hope to make many more. A lot of customers have said they like coming to the cafe for its friendly atmosphere. The cafe sells a selection of hot and cold drinks, snacks, breakfast, lunches, ice creams and desserts. We also have a children’s menu. We have a good reputation for having a fast service and being are a friendly bunch. We like to source our ingredients from local suppliers like Michael’s Butchers, The Bakery and Fruit and Flowers.
family is not just a lovely way to enjoy your meals together in a great environment, but it’s also kind on your wallet.
Our opening times are Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm, Friday-Saturday 8am-4pm and Sunday 9am-3pm.
For those on the go, we provide a take-away option on most of our food and drinks; a perfect way to take your menu favourites home or to work!
All of our food is cooked to order and meals can be customised to your liking, as we are happy to swap any of the included options for another of similar value, plus you can always add extras. Also, our popular breakfasts are available all day.
We will be introducing some favourite winter warmers very soon, so please look out for these on our specials board. I will keep you updated on this and any other news on our Facebook page: Cafe on the Corner.
We offer 2 for £10 on a large selection of our meals and 2 for £6 on a range of desserts, so popping in with friends and

Paul Mortimore
Celebrating Forty Years of Success Felixstowe Karate Club is celebrated a landmark 40 years of training on 10th September 2014. Throughout its 40 year history, the club has been led by 4th Dan blackbelt Paul Mortimore, who has trained literally hundreds of men, women and children over the years. Felixstowe Karate Club was founded in 1974 and based at Orwell High School until earlier this year, when it moved to the new Felixstowe Academy. Under Paul’s watchful eye, twenty-two students have obtained their coveted blackbelts, seven of whom are current instructors. The club has produced National Champions within the club’s governing association, the EKKA and Paul himself was a double EKKA, National Champion in 1975, winning the Senior Individual title, captaining the winning Kumite team (Ipswich A) and obtaining a silver medal in the Kata category. Joe Stabb, 2nd Dan, said: “Paul has dedicated himself to this club and its students for forty years and is a true inspiration to us all. His commitment to helping everyone who trains with Felixstowe Karate Club to achieve their best and his support in helping them to reach their goals is untiring. It takes a great deal of hard work and perseverance to become a blackbelt, but having someone who believes you can do it, will encourage you to excel and will support you every step of the way is 80% of the battle, and that’s precisely what Paul does for all of his students – blackbelt or not. We are very grateful to him and proud that he has achieved this great milestone.”
Back in the day
Paul Mortimore added: “I am proud to see the club has stood the test of time. I have seen many different martial arts clubs come and go over the years, but we are still here, producing students of blackbelt standard and winning honours at competitions.” The club trains four days a week at Felixstowe Academy. Please visit: www.felixstowekarateclub. co.uk for details.

Mange Tout, Mange Tout! by Dean Wales
Now I can boast that I speak French… well, I can ask for beer, duck in fig sauce (wouldn’t want to attempt saying that after two glasses of pastis), where the nearest second-hand button shop is and enquire as to how a policeman’s great-cousin is faring after his accident with a crochet hook. All very useful, I’m sure you’d agree. But it occurred to me during a recent trip to the French Riviera, that we Brits only have ourselves to blame for the French having little patience with ‘le visiteur britannique.’
Clearly, it’s perfectly acceptable to just say everything a little louder to make our snail-eating cousins understand our charming language, but an instantaneous and curt response of “English” to every word uttered to us in French is just not on. And I’m mortified that the word in French for ketchup is… ketchup! Aaaagh! That’s just a free ticket for us indolent British types to plaster fine Gallic cuisine with flavour-masking red gloop… okay, I have to say I do like to have the said gloop on bâtonnets de poisson… go on, Google Translate it!! Oh and when it comes to steak; well we’ve got to take whatever is thrown at us where that little culinary delight is concerned. Well done? Well done? Oh dear - asking a
French chef to cook the finest fillet steak so it resembles a Legionnaire’s sweaty boot is on par with requesting permission to slap his mother. But I have to give on one point. The French have a great knack at humiliating us Brits during our admirable attempts at parler-ing français. I mean, take my little shopping experience for instance. Spotting a very fine cardigan with delicate cable-knit detailing in the exquisitely dressed window of Galeries Lafayette – for those unfamiliar, it’s a French departmental store for gentlemen with exceptional taste – I entered the shop to make a purchase.
Overcoming the usual pleasantries with the sales assistant, all in French I must add, I proceeded to ask her whether she had a pullover in my size. At this point she burst out laughing and told all her colleagues in the close proximity what I had just said. What was her problem? I simply asked: ‘Es-ce que vous avez un poulet dans ma taille?’
Poulet does mean pullover… doesn’t it? It does, doesn’t it?

Everything but the Girl
Book launch and exhibition Saturday 29th November Have you ever thought to yourself that your life would make a good book, film or plot line in a favourite soap? Putting pen to paper, describing your thoughts and feelings, may seem like a good reflective exercise. It is this that forms the basis of a forthcoming Suffolk book, Everything but the girl; a raw, poetic response to relationships, lust and love by Ipswich author and graphic designer, Joanne Holmes.
The book contains impressions and artworks by local Felixstowe artists as well as others in response to the poetry. This includes a range of illustrations, watercolour paintings, digital art and textiles offering readers a unique insight into the creative talent within Suffolk. Local artist Graham Denny as well as others, have produced acrylic and oil responses to the poems Trumpet Player and The Kiss. Graham, who is well-known locally as the founder of BASIC Life Charity (see p.11), only began painting this year. These paintings will be exhibited at the Freudian Sheep Gallery, St. Helen Street, Ipswich, as part of the group exhibition. The exhibition launch is at 5 -8pm on the 29th with a private viewing, which will include a guest speaker, book signing, free drinks and a chance to meet the artists involved. The
exhibition concludes on the 4th December. It would be lovely to have you there to not only see and support some literary talent from further afield, but also some local artistic talent. For more information, please follow the facebook page: EverythingButTheGirlPoetryBook or visit: www.reddi.co.uk.

The Sweet Hut
Mr ‘G’ and Miss Hope treated us to a retro, quirky introduction to making your own sweets in the recent BBC series ‘Sweets Made Simple’. I recently had the pleasure of receiving handmade chocolates for my birthday, which were absolutely gorgeous. Although it makes me nostalgic for the sweeties my mother didn’t make growing up, I haven’t quite worked up the enthusiasm to make the Hope and Greenwood Liquorice Caramels I know my husband will love. You see, my husband has a sweet little secret, besides bacon, he’s rather partial to liquorice. Not your common, garden variety allsorts, no, double salt (if not triple salt) Dutch liquorice. The quest for this has led me to The Sweet Hut on Hamilton Road. Here I found every sort of liquorice you can imagine and every conceivable shape. He is delighted, and guaranteed that no one will pinch his sweeties. It’s lovely to walk in and find handmade chocolates under the glass counter and two big walls filled with old fashioned sweeties that will make your eyes boggle, including the rarely found Army and Navy lozenges. If you ask for a ‘quarter’, don’t worry, they’re bilingual and will understand that you mean the equivalent of an ‘EU’ 100 grams. My children were brought up with American candy, so they are very pleased to go in and find their favourites, along with some new spins on familiar brands. Whether you’re looking for Marmite flavoured chocolate, or a quarter of rhubarb and custard sweeties, The Sweet Hut caters for almost any fancy, whether nostalgic or obscure.

Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity
From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. This month, we thought we’d share some information about our Felixstowe store. After moving around the corner from Orwell Road to 17 Hamilton Road (next door but one to Argos), we now have a much bigger sales space and have been able to accept and sell large items of furniture, in addition to the usual clothes and books etc. Manager Angela and her team have worked hard to build up an excellent rapport with customers and they are always available to help with any enquiries.
Thanks to the amazing support of Richard Cobb and the staff at Wainwrights Estate Agents, we are now able to offer collections and deliveries of goods. Richard has offered us free use of his van on Tuesdays and we thank him for this fantastic contribution to BASIC and the community. Collections and deliveries are charged at £5 per load and can be arranged with Angela on Felixstowe 272618.
As we enter November with the darker mornings and evenings, we’re reminded that Christmas is approaching rapidly! While it’s a time of great excitement and anticipation for many people, we appreciate that, for others, it can be a time of great pressure. Not only do some people suffer from an exaggerated loneliness during the festive season, but there is the additional financial worry for many.
At BASIC, we appreciate those worries and are gearing up to provide some fantastic items at prices as low as we can possibly offer them. In addition, if you are struggling financially we have supplies of food in our food banks. If you need food, simply ask a professional organisation such as Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Social Services, a Housing Association or similar to make a referral and we may be able to help you. We also understand that it is not only the unemployed who may need some help – those who are under-employed with cut working hours and those who are

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...
A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor
This month I’ve spent a fair amount of time considering the new Care Act provisions as some of these came into effect at the beginning of October. The Act aims to consolidate years of confusing legislation in order to make the provision of care more focussed on the particular needs of each individual, and places a legal duty on local authorities to provide for each person’s eligible needs. Over the next few years, the increased use of means-testing and the capping of some care costs will hopefully be of great benefit to those who need assistance. In turn, however, local authorities will be able to ‘claw back’ money from people who are given assets by someone who subsequently needs care where the gift is made in an attempt to enable that person to claim financial assistance towards care fees. Watch this space for how this develops in practice.
so that they can be located easily when needed. Why not consider keeping a note of where the deeds are stored with your Will, or effecting a voluntary first registration? This could save both time and money when your estate is administered, not to mention avoiding additional stress on the part of your loved ones. Fiona Sturgeon
This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive. Specific legal advice should be taken in any individual situation.
I’ve also been involved in a search for missing deeds over the past few weeks. If a property is not yet registered at the Land Registry, it’s vital to keep these somewhere safe

New World Record for Dean Gould
Celebrating 30 years of Record Breaking with his Best Record EVER!
Local lad Dean Gould is well known for the many records that he’s broken over the past years. It has now been a legendary thirty years of record breaking and, to celebrate this in true Dean Gould style, Dean broke his latest world record (catching a single stack of 200 beermats) by catching 215 of those bad boys on October 8th 2014. The beermats were all stacked up high and nimbly balanced on his elbow. Then before you knew it, with a flick of his arm he flung the beermats up and caught them all, stack well and truly still intact, with the same arm into the BACK of his hand and held for several seconds. Blink and you would have missed it! However, we didn’t miss it… in fact, we got a first-hand exclusive recording of the event, caught
