Welcome to the August edition... By the time you read this, our two well-anticipated carnivals would have been over with great success all round and I hope you had a chance to go and have a wonderful time there.

For all you tennis fans, I’m sure you’d agree that we’ve got to hand it to Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic. We were glued to the screen! Not on quite the same scale of national interest, but certainly one of Felixstowe’s most loved annual events to look forward to is Art on the Prom on Sunday 6th September. Be sure to go - if it’s anything like last year it’ll be an amazing turnout of artists. We’re very proud to be part of the launch of a new book by local author Brian Blackmore. The Downing of the Black Cat is a great read and relevant to Suffolk, so do pop along to your nearest bookshop or go online and check it out. (Also see page 14). We’re delighted to annouce that the winner of last months competition is Linda Young. The answer to the question Win Meal for Two! was of course - Germany. Congratulations Linda! Wishing Taste the delights of the Bombay you a lovely meal out to Bombay Nite! Nite restaurant. Simply answer Finally, we have some wonderful news to share with you so be sure to read our September’s issue. Until then, enjoy this month - be good and keep well! Local Business News News from the Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce...

Chamber of Commerce

During June the team at Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce worked on a project to improve its support for retailers in the town centre and hopefully increase membership from this important business sector. The Chamber received funding from Suffolk Coastal District’s East Suffolk Partnership Fund to run the project. A survey of independent retailers revealed their views on the development of the town centre and ideas on how the Chamber can work with local businesses to develop Felixstowe as a more attractive shopping destination.

Retailers were invited to complete and return the surveys and were given the incentive of a free dinner for two at The Orwell Hotel. A draw of completed surveys was held and Stillwater Books won the prize. The ideas and comments raised in the survey were discussed at a meeting of interested parties held at the Brook Hotel which was facilitated by Helen Greengrass, Change Director of Felixstowe Forward. A report on the

meeting was published on the Chamber’s website and will be used as a basis for a working relationship between the Chamber, local businesses and Felixstowe Forward.

Felixstowe Chamber is a member of the East Suffolk Business Association Network and was invited to host the July meeting in Felixstowe for the first time. The Chamber was lucky to secure The Orwell Hotel as the venue for the meeting with Murrray Gibson of Uniserve and Karen Last of Claydon Financial as speakers. Plans for future members’ events include a wine tasting at Landguard Fort and a visit to the Port of Felixstowe. Details of networking events and how to join the Chamber can be found on the website: www.felixstowechamber.co.uk.

Felixstowe truly does set the bar for charitable work. Here’s a little introduction to the amazing work of Walton Parish Nursing...

Walton Parish Nursing

Walton Parish Nursing is an ecumenical charity providing healthcare with a difference. We reach out to people of all ages and all faiths, walking alongside them in their time of need. We employ two part-time health professionals and also have about twenty volunteers. Our aim is to augment the work done by the NHS. We run health sessions at the Laydens cafe in Langley Avenue, a health drop in at Seaton Road Methodist Church and chair based exercises at Collimer Court. We also visit clients in their own homes, helping them care for their feet and manage leg ulcers. Another aspect of our work is to be there for people following discharge from hospital and to be available for any who are coming to terms with chronic illness.

A large part of our work is giving information, helping clients understand their medication and knowing when and who clients can be referred to for additional support. We are a charity run by the Methodist, Baptist and Anglican churches in Walton and are very aware that health includes more than just physical well-being. A large part of our work is to be available and to listen, we will also, of course, address any spiritual needs that the client wishes to raise. Our objectives are to provide relief of sickness and the preservation of health among people residing permanently or temporarily in and around Walton and Felixstowe, by the provision of parish nurses.

To provide wholistic care which addresses the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of the local community.

For more details see waltonpn.org.uk or contact us on contactus@waltonpn.org.uk We would love to hear about your stories and the help your were given by the Walton Parish Nursing charity. Send in your stories to: info@thefelixstowemagazine.com

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. It’s a busy summer so far at BASIC!

We enjoyed a fantastic start to Wimbledon with a cream tea at Felixstowe finest café - The Café on the Corner. Not only did we enjoy gorgeous food and have accompaniment by a very talented pianist, but the event raised a brilliant £170 for the charity! Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

Turkish Lentil & Rice Salad It’s all about the lentils! Healthy, tasty, very quick to put together and high in protein. Not only that, but let’s give parsley a little applause here... In just ten sprigs of parsley, 205% of your vitamin K needs are provided for the day. This helps keep your bones strong, helps the blood clot when you cut yourself and a whole bunch of other stuff! Cool hey? So without further ado, here’s August’s recipe... Ingrdients

Method

1 cup green lentils, cooked and drained ½ cup rice, cooked and cooled 1 large onion, 4 tbsp olive oil 1 big carrot, grated 2-3 green onions, chopped ½ -1 cup fresh parsley, chopped ½ cup fresh mint, chopped 1 lemon’s juice 1 tsp salt to taste 1 tsp black pepper ½ cup corn (optional)

After cooking your rice and green lentils separately, let them cool down to room temperature. Meanwhile, take the olive oil in a skillet and sauté onions for about five minutes over a medium heat. Stir in the grated carrots and sauté for an additional six to eight minutes. Let the mixture cool for a while.

Finally, combine sautéed onions and carrots with cooked green lentils and rice. Add all of the remaining ingredients and mix til you have a colourful dish of pure and utter joy! Yum!

So much for boring salads... this one will completely bring out the Mediterranean in you!

Blue Naan Shines at the Curry Life Business Awards

One of Felixstowe’s popular Indian restaurants, shone in the Curry Life Business Achievement Awards 2015 for being one of the best achievers in the country. The Blue Naan, co-owned by Sheikh Mudabbir Hussain was awarded this recognition in a glittering ceremony held in London. Local MP for Suffolk Coastal and Deputy, Dr Therese Coffey, was present at the Awards Ceremony to show her support to this local business.

The London based Curry Life Magazine known for promoting entrepreneurs in the Curry Houses nationally is behind this glamorous event, where 600 people celebrated the cream of the British Asian businesses.

Awards were given to sixteen top Asian entrepreneurs from businesses across the UK, including Mr Hussain from the Blue Naan Restaurant of Felixstowe, at the ceremony held at the Park Plaza Riverbank London Hotel. Amongst the VIP guests at the ceremony was Dame Tessa Jowell DBE, Armed Forces Minister, Penny Mordaunt MP, Home Office Minister, Lord Ahmad, Paralympic Gold Medalist, Lord Chris Holmes, Deputy Leader of the House of Commons and MP for Leicester East, Keith Vaz. Dame Tessa Jowell DBE, former Olympic minister, paid tribute to the invaluable contribution to the economy and amazing resilience of the Asian community, despite challenging times in Britain. Local Lad Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

A Train of Thought

Today I sat opposite a Minion! No I don’t mean a person doomed to a life of servitude for the remainder of their existence, I’m referring to one of those characters from the movie ‘Despicable Me’.

You know what I mean, those cute little oversized yellow TicTacs wearing flying goggles, dungarees and gloves. I sat opposite one on the train to London, well someone dressed as one. I only stopped staring at it, erm him, her…. no it, when it waved at me! Now for the first time in ages I was on the train for pleasure and so had time to notice just how odd some people and situations can be on trains. The first I became aware of this on this particular trip was when the chap who was across the aisle from me on the opposing table seat placed his iPhone on the table in front of him. Then another iPhone (earlier model), Samsung Galaxy and MP3 player. Crikeys I thought does he really need that many devices? Then a Blackberry and finally another MP3 player. In total, six devices. Now as odd as this seems, it became weirder when he actually used all of them, two at once at times!

Thinking this must be a one off, I spotted a rather elegant lady who was clearly enjoying a splendid piece of classical music. She was gently humming away to herself at which point I tried to guess the piece she was listening to. The

Then there was the rude awakening by a blazing row between two well-to-do, stylishly dressed ladies. The first thing I heard when I woke up was ‘I should know I’ve been trumping for well over 30 years’. Assuming I’d misheard, I sat bolt upright to listen in further. Nope, I had heard correctly. She resumed ‘My father taught me how to trump, and he should know he was a champion trumper’.

Local Lass

Here’s Felixstowe’s local lass, Aggy...

Make Aggy Waggy

Art and Heart in Felixstowe The July Felixstowe Magazine showed how many creative people live in this town. Can a canine contribute? After all, I had a comprehensive education - in Barking - where I excelled in classic subjects. So, without wanting to sound like Braggy Aggy, I’d like to share these with you. First, a haiku (a Japanese form of poetry), in memory of my best friend in the world, Diane, who died six months ago: February low Accept death and let life flow Thrive, Lhasa apso.

I was so sad, but within days of my fundraising launch for Cancer Research, Zara, Carl and Mandeep all appeared in my life. Zara from Shampooches Pet Grooming gave Aggy a much needed free makeover; Carl from Bushfire Photography organised a free photo-shoot and an Aggy Promotion fund-raiser and Mandeep, wonderful editor of this very magazine, gave me lots of free publicity. My heart began to mend and even more so when money and love started to come in from friends and strangers. So, second, in my role as dog mathematician and philosopher, I give you the PythAGGYras theorem:

To elucidate: Aggy plus Generous Giving from You equals Wagginess squared - which means a lot, a lot of happiness. Gratitude to my Facebook followers from Felixstowe and afar. Keep going. If you don’t know my story yet, google ‘Make Aggy Waggy’ and watch the video. If you can, please make a donation on-line or by texting AGGY70 £1 (or more) to 70070.

Touring & Caravan Holiday Homes A family owned site in Felixstowe since 1965. 2 x double glazed & centrally heated quality caravans to hire from Saturday to Saturday Ready for when your family or friends want to come visit you!

Local Author You’ve seen our lovely local author in The Felixstowe Magazine before with his short stories and recipes. Well now, he’s launching his first ever book! Here he is to tell you more…

The Downing of the Black Cat by Brian Blackmore

Hello to all you lovely readers. I’m Brian, the retired chef who’s written a few recipes for you to try and a couple of short stories to keep you entertained. Recently, I decided to write a book – not about cooking but a nice detective story, set in the 1960s. A German bomber crashed into the River Orwell in March, 1944. Only the pilot survived, who was found on the mudflats, clutching a child. Nobody knew who the boy was, or where he came from. It is March 1964. A knock on Ipswich based, private investigator Joe Pageant’s door brings in a young man, eager to find out the truth about who he is. He has no memory up to the age of approximately nine. All he has to go on are two reoccurring dreams... Joe is commissioned to try to find him some answers. But before Joe can solve his case, he has to unravel the mystery of the black cat that haunts John’s dreams and work out what happened to three other boys that he discovered were in similar situations to his client. Can Joe discover which boy belongs to which family and what happened to them? The story has intrigue, mystery, humour and love when Joe meets the woman who has haunted his dreams for several years.

Will he ever discover the truth so that his client, John Peacock, can put his haunting dreams to bed forever and find out who is true parents are?

To find out what happens, either buy the paperback which you can order at any good book shop, or buy online at Amazon or Kindle.

I would like to thank Mandeep, the editor of this fine magazine for creating the artwork for the cover of my book, and for her encouragement and getting me connected with the right people. I would also like to thank Katherine Kane, my proofreader and editor, for her patience, understanding

Would you like a Maid to Clean your home?

my vision for the story and helping to bring it to life. I’d also like to thank my lovely granddaughter Nikki Coleman. Without her advice and giving me a big push, this book would never have been written. Thank you, Nikki.

I would like to add that no cats were hurt during the writing of The Downing of the Black Cat. Brian A. Blackmore. brianblackmore@live.co.uk

Local Community

15

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Mcdonald’s restaurant near Peewit Hill, here’s news on the Neighbourhood Watch in the surrounding area…

Neighbourhood Watch - Peewit Hill Neighbourhood Watch is a voluntary initiative where neighbours own and run their own scheme, and come together to create strong, friendly and active communities where crime and anti-social behaviour are less like to happen. It is one of the most successful crime reduction initiatives ever. Schemes vary widely. At its most basic level, membership involves being aware of what happens in your neighbourhood, taking simple precautions to prevent and reduce the risk of crime, and being alert and willing to report anything that is suspicious. The Police do not run these initiatives but they do support them. The co-ordinator is the main contact between scheme members and the Police, sharing relevant local crime information promptly. Members have a key role in supporting and making the scheme a success.

We have managed to obtain funding from some local businesses including residents and the Suffolk Community Foundation. The funds raised will be used to procure neighbourhood watch signs for the area and a number of litter bins to encourage passers-by to drop their food wrapping and other unwanted material in the bins rather than simply drop them everywhere. In order to achieve our objectives, we endeavour to undertake the following:

• Greater community spirit.

- Make representations to local councils about matters affecting our ability to achieve the objectives of the scheme.

• Discount on property insurance.

- Circulating information to residents about crime.

• Working together to build safe and friendly communities,

- Canvassing for funds.

Benefits

• Get to know your neighbours ‘whose face fits where.’ • Less likely to be victim of a burglary/crime.

- Enter into communications with the police about crime in our area.

• NW street signs and stickers act as a deterrent.

- Canvassing for scheme sponsorship.

The Peewit Hill scheme was launched on 8 November 2010 and is run by Kaye and assisted by two local residents. Here’s Kaye to tell us more about the scheme’s goals:

- Making representations to housing associations or landlords on behalf of tenants on matters related to their safety and wellbeing if they feel threatened by the conduct of other tenants.

th

The objectives of the scheme are to:

- help reduce anti-social behaviour in our neighbourhood. - prevent house break-ins. - prevent damage to property and vehicles in the area. - help protect and improve our environment. - reduce litter scatter in the area. - help reduce noise and air pollution from surrounding business premises. - help reduce fear of crime for the elderly. - foster community cohesion.

Local Club A lovely way to spend an evening or two…

Felixstowe Sewing Club

The whirring of sewing machines, laughter and the rattle of teacups are the sounds most likely to welcome students to Felixstowe Sewing School. Run by Amanda Bowden since March 2013, the school has built up a loyal and happy clientele with many returning time after time for workshops and courses covering dressmaking, pattern cutting, embroidery and fashion accessory. Amanda’s wealth of experience in teaching textiles and almost bottomless patience helps even the most nervous and novice sewers, who learn in a supportive and fun environment. Amanda quips, “Many of my sewers joke they are only coming for the tea and cake! I try and look after my clients and create a community feeling - my classes are very small so people receive a lot of individual attention and help, as well as receiving weekly ‘top tips’ to help with homesewing. This helps folk feel confident and able to tackle more demanding projects and go on to make things

independently. The best feedback is when I see pictures of clothes or items made following workshops or courses.”

There are lots of exciting new courses starting in September for all levels of stitchers, including soft furnishing and craft courses intended to help with Christmas preparations. One of the more unusual sessions on offer are the monthly and very sociable Mystery Craft evenings where the product to be made is ‘revealed’ on the night. All the resources are prepared for you so you can easily get your creativity flowing, all while having a good chat with fellow stitchers. Mystery Shopper Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Conkers Pet & Garden Centre I saw a man I recognized in my office recently - it didn’t take me too long to realize that I usually see him walking three little Yorkies on my dog walks! I didn’t have pets growing up, because my family moved across counties, countries and continents. However, with great age comes great responsibility and I find myself the proud carer of a young dog, two birds and a pond full of fish and frogs! I’m also not a driver so being able to pick up what I need for our menagerie in Felixstowe town centre is a real bonus. For relatively small premises, pretty much anything can be found at Conkers for your pet/s, from bedding, loose foodstuffs to live fish and reptile food. The service is personal, local and friendly.

Being an absolute beginner, I have felt comfortable asking questions and getting advice about murky ponds, what to feed your carp in March and which seed is best for Zebra Finches.

I’m attracted by local, independent shops, which offer a level of service that bigger store chains can only seek to emulate. I have witnessed what can only be described as ‘kindness’ at Conkers - that level of service that goes above

please mention The Felixstowe

and beyond. For those of you who are not supporting the animal kingdom, Conkers is also a good place to pick up gardening supplies. When you pass the front door, you will find seasonal plants displayed outside and in, plants, seeds and loose bulbs. I’m not sure if the proprietor of Conkers would necessarily want to encourage this, but I’m convinced that I’m not the only parent who has taken their children to ‘visit’ the fish, or in my son’s case, the crickets. Conkers could have legitimately charged me an admission fee, but actually, I’ve ended up a patron and who knows, with the way our family’s personal zoo is growing, I may be charging admission myself soon!
