Note from the Editor

Welcome to the July edition... It’s Carnival season! This has got to be my favourite part of the year when Sharon, Nick and their respective team of volunteers pull off the ever popular Trimley and Felixstowe carnivals. Trimley kick things off on 11th-12th July with the theme “Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales.” Then in Felixstowe the town unite for a stellar “Magic of the Movies” procession and not one, but TWO air shows on 25th-26th. For more info have a look at the websites: www.trimleycarnival.co.uk and www.felixstowecarnival.org

For last month’s competition we received a whole bucket of entries, so thank you to all of you who entered. The lucky winner for June’s competition was... Sarah Corder!!

Wahoo - Well done Sarah! To remind you of the competition question, we asked you: What breed of dog is Aggy? The answer is of course a Lhasa Apso dog! You can see more from Aggy on page 11. Win Meal for Two! Courtesy of Bombay Nite you could win a delicious meal for two. If you’d like to try your luck, have a go at answering Taste the delights of the Bombay Nite restaurant. It’s Back - Felixstowe’s Open Top Bus This Summer 2015 Felixstowe’s open top bus returns this summer for its short season and will use a changed route which will include operating along the sea front in both directions, allowing passengers to take in more of the bracing sea air as it links the Landguard Viewing Point area with the town centre and Old Felixstowe. The timetable has also changed slightly in order to provide connections with the train service to and from Ipswich. The bus will leave Great Eastern Square at 10.35am, then 11.30am and at 30 minutes past each hour (not 1.30pm) until 3.30pm. It will depart Landguard Fort at 11am and every hour on the hour (not 1pm) until 4pm and will operate on Sundays and Wednesdays from 26th July until 2nd September inclusive, but not on the August bank holiday. In recent years, open top buses have disappeared from many coastal towns and we are indeed very fortunate that this much appreciated facility continues to brighten up the local scene during the high summer. In addition to allowing for a round trip, it is possible to use the bus as a normal service to get ‘from A to B’ en route, and many people do make use of this facility. As in previous years, Felixstowe Travel Watch is pleased to support part of the operating costs of this vehicle, so don’t forget our usual advice – use it or lose it!

Photography by B.J.A. Treuren / www.rhonrad.eu

Local Person

Ceri-Ann Proctor

Hi, I’m Ceri-Ann Proctor. I’m 13 years old and from Kirton. I’m the youngest person to have represented Great Britain in Rhoenrad in Europe. Rhoenrad is a form of gymnastic skill performed using a large wheel. Rhoenrad is sometimes called gymnastic wheeling and is an activity that can be enjoyed by all kinds of people. I joined because my mum had tried it nine years ago and she thought I may enjoy it. Since then, I have been doing Rhoenrad with the Torwood Wheelers in Kesgrave since November 2013.

Last year Torwood Wheelers held a workshop weekend for people who wanted to try Rhoenrad and I, along with Konrad, James and Sjoerd, did a demonstration at this. Sjoerd, who is a Dutch wheeler, inspired me and four others to enter a competition in the Netherlands this January, (unfortunately there are no wheeling competitions in the UK). In the competition you have to do straight-line, spirals and vaults. Normally I only do straight-line routines, so I had to learn vaulting. This is hard as we do not have any proper crash mats to land on and I had to improve my spirals, which I have never been keen on doing. In December Sjoerd, Anouschka, Patrick and Monica came to Ipswich from the Netherlands and they coached our competition team, it was a very intense six hour training session and I learnt so much. Then in January we went to the Netherlands and entered a Dutch Area Championship Competition, I competed in the Junior Level 5. We were very pleased that our team won a gold, silver and bronze medals, which was a great achievement for the first competition Torwood Wheelers had done. I was then invited to take part in a World Qualifications Competition in Rotterdam along with James and Konrad. Here we all had to compete at Level 1 (the top level), I competed in the Junior girls representing Great Britain and the other two in the adult males. Unfortunately I didn’t get into the Worlds as I was half a point off the qualifying score. I was really pleased to have got this far as I was the youngest

person from outside the Netherlands that has ever competed in a Dutch District or World Qualification competition. It was a bit scary competing as everyone around you is speaking a different language but many of them did try to speak some English to me and I was grateful that my coach, Anouschka, was there to translate for me. I was invited by Anouschka to train with their Elite Wheelers after the Rotterdam Competition, so I stayed on in the Netherlands for their training night. There were four Dutch wheelers at this training session and I was helped and encouraged to do new harder moves. I look forward to doing more competitions later this year and next in the Netherlands, with the aim of qualifying for the next World Championships. Well done Ceri-Ann! Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. This month we thought we’d share a little about how BASIC works in the words of a couple of our staff. Becci has been with us at our Walton shop for over six months and has become a vital part of our team, while Sylvia is one of the very few original volunteers from our opening in 1999. Here’s what they have to say:Becci

donations. I’m always amazed at the generosity of people and the quality of the donations we receive. I find working for BASIC very satisfying and at the end of the day it’s nice to know you’ve helped other local people. The experience has opened my eyes to the needs in our community and I’ve been touched by some of the incidents where we have been able to help others.” Sylvia

Working at BASIC Walton Shop:

“I had heard BASIC were a charity which helps the community in Felixstowe and I wanted to volunteer because I believe in what the charity does. My children are at school and I had some spare time so I wanted to contribute to the community. I find working at BASIC fantastic and I love it! I enjoy coming to work and it’s a pleasure. When I began the people were very friendly and I started off sorting clothes, which I enjoy. As time went on I learnt to operate the till and do restocking, pricing, sorting EBay items and handling the food bank

Working at BASIC Felixstowe Shop:

“I started working for BASIC when the charity started in 1999. To start at the very beginning was very exciting. As time went by with half a dozen customers at the start we’ve grown to have two shops which are often full and our growth has been very quick. I like working for the charity as the funds are for Felixstowe and I was born and bred in the town. I started doing everything from sorting to operating the till but I really prefer being ‘behind the scenes’. I’ve always enjoyed doing the window displays which change every week keeping in with the seasons.

I particularly like doing the displays for the Carnival Weekend, Christmas and Easter. Like Becci, I’ve really had my eyes opened to local needs, particularly with the food bank. Every day is different and it’s certainly not a routine job. I like to put my hand to anything which comes along and we’ve also had quizzes and other social fund-raising events which I particularly enjoy.” If you would like to volunteer at BASIC please call in to one of our shops to enquire. We’re so grateful to Sylvia, Becci and all the other wonderful staff who enable us to assist the community.

Local Charity

From one amazing charity to another, here’s an update from the wonderful people at The Befriending Scheme...

The Befriending Scheme

The Befriending Scheme provides friendship and learning opportunities for adults (16yrs+) from vulnerable groups, including those with learning disabilities, mental health needs and older people across Suffolk. We run a monthly evening group in Felixstowe at the Community Hub Centre. Our goal is to break down social isolation by creating a safe, friendly and enjoyable environment for people to come and interact with others. With the help of a dedicated team of volunteers, we run a programme of fun activities and events, and so far this year we have held themed discos, games and quiz evenings.

We also provide a one-to-one befriending service, carefully matching a volunteer with someone who would like a friend with whom to share similar interests. We want to help people feel less isolated and lonely and more included in society. By introducing new friendships, people can do the things they enjoy together. Whether it’s going out for a coffee, having lunch together, a visit to the cinema, or a simple walk out, our linked friends tell us they feel happier, less lonely and more included.

If you, or someone you know, are able to share a few hours a week, or even a month, to become a befriender, or to volunteer at our social evenings, please do get in touch. Full and ongoing support is given and out of pocket expenses are covered.

Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Travelling blight!

I have a caravan! There, I’ve said it. I’ve outed myself; I’ve withdrawn my person from the bijou closet, fashioned for compact living. But you know, to be honest I wouldn’t say I’m embarrassed to admit I own and frequently use an entity often described as the bane of the British highways.

As I understand, it’s quite middle-class these days to take to the roads, towing your own pintsize oasis of serenity and to pitch it up out in the sticks somewhere, to sit in matching (and folding…well collapsible more often than not) canvas seats with your partner to sip a chilled G & T. Well you have to drink anything you have chilling in the fridge as soon as you arrive; just because it’s so small you need to make way for the chow. But I have to say, I’ve not quite grasped the unsettling phenomenon which occurs around folk when taking to the road with their icon of domestic-bliss-on-wheels.

Let me explain. You may meet an elegant lady out in the charming town centre of Felixstowe, selecting the finest artichokes from one of our first-rate greengrocers, or studying the label of a vintage Châteauneuf-du-Pape in one of our classy high-street establishments. However, I can almost guarantee if you clock the same hypothetical female on a weekend away in her caravan….she’ll emerge from her mobile abode in a pair of Crocs!

And that’s not all. The Le Creuset pan she absolutely insists on using at home has been replaced by a triangular

To advertise, please call

07929 979 073

shaped aluminium thing that fits with another two identical pans on one gas ring, oh yeah, and they all share the same detachable handle. And as for the artichokes, well love, they’re not going to go well with that tin of frankfurters you’re tipping in to that triangular saucepan now are they? And what is it with all that melamine? Why aren’t you using your Denby hand-thrown teacups? Oh yeah! They’ll probably break when you’re washing up on the grass in a pink plastic bowl whilst wearing cut-off jeans and a vest!

You see when I take a mini-break in my Abbey Aventura (catchy name huh?) I like to retain the same dignity and restraint as I would practice at home? Plastic teacups and triangular saucepans indeed…pah!

Sorry for the rant, and anyway I must rush off now, I need to fit a sticker on my caravan which says: “If you think this is slow…wait for the hills!” Class or what? @deanwales

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

Som Tam - Thai Green Papaya Salad Thai green papaya salad, known as Som Tam in Thai, is one of the staples of street food cooking and dining. It’s fresh, easy to prepare, and just tastes wonderful. This recipe is the classic sweet and sour version and serves one person. Ingredients 2 cloves of garlic 5 Thai chillies (depending on how spicy you want it) 2 tablespoons shelled roasted peanuts 1 tablespoon fish sauce ½ - 1 tablespoon palm sugar or brown sugar 1 - 2 limes (I used about 2, but I like things pretty sour) 1 tablespoon of dried shrimp (optional) 1 - 2 small tomatoes 1 big handful of slivered green papaya To garnish - Long beans or green beans, green cabbage and Thai sweet Basil. Method 1. Roughly crush a small handful of unsalted peanuts with pestle and mortar. 2. Melt palm sugar in a small pan at low or medium heat, adding 2 tbs of water. Should form a shiny and thick syrup.

3. Peel and shred the papaya, and soak in cold water while you prepare the rest of the salad. This makes the papaya crunchier and gets rid of any excess starch. 4. Cut the green beans into one-inch pieces. Discard ends. 5. Grind chillies and peeled garlic with mortar and pestle. You still ought to see bits and pieces, not a puree. Add the shrimp and continue bashing. Add the crushed peanuts and mix well. 6. Add the shredded papaya and continue grinding just enough so the mixture soaks up the flavours. 7. Add the liquid palm sugar, tomatoes, beans, lime juice and fish sauce. Continue to lightly bash, shift with the spoon, and mix a little more. This recipe was written by the lovely Detelina from the Thai Hut restaurant. Pop along to try their delicious Som Tan dish at Thai Hut, 65 Undercliff Road, Felixstowe. 01394 549126. (See ad below).

Mystery Shopper

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Bombay Nite

We recently visited Bombay Nite to celebrate a birthday and an engagement. My husband was feeling generous and relaxed and when the (adult) kids were politely ordering soft drinks, he implored them to have what they want.

‘Sezmum’ ordered a glass of wine and was encouraged to order a bottle of Rosé as he’s sure that I’ll have a glass with my meal. There are nervous smiles around the table and significant looks are passed amongst them. We subsequently found out that they were taken aback by his generosity and were waiting for him to break the news that he had a terminal illness! Bombay Nite has a way of making you feel warm, relaxed and downright expansive, and my husband was clearly responding to this!

The quality of the food is excellent, we eat there regularly and I’ve never had a meal that wasn’t delicious. My particular favourite is a dish called ‘Lamb Lagan’ which has a deep, rich mint and tamarind sauce. The meat is tender and moist, but the vegetable version is equally delicious and I’m happy to share with my vegetarian friend.

What is frustrating is that this dish is like a siren who calls me over and over and I no longer want to try anything else. I even tried to override this by looking up the recipe online,

Beautiful Garden Shrubs & Plants

only to find that this is a speciality of the house developed over many years to a ‘secret recipe’. My husband, the carnivore, is equally taken with ‘Bombay Delight’, which is lamb, chicken and prawns in, of course, a meat sauce! This is a warm, friendly place where people go back over and over again and new people feel equally welcome. I know that this has been the place where people have celebrated all their family’s significant days for years; this place has become synonymous with two generations of good feeling. The staff are generous to a fault, first of all you will never leave without having little ‘extras’ brought to you and feeling sated.

Bombay Nite give back to their local community over and over again with their charity nights as well as supporting their own overseas charity. This summer is Bombay Nite’s 25th anniversary and I’m sure I join in a chorus of satisfied customers wishing them well! Bombay Nite 285 High Street, Felixstowe, IP11 9DZ

Sponsored Page It’s amazing how many artists there are in Felixstowe. To help showcase them, Kerseys Solicitors have kindly sponsored this page...

Local Artist

Jim Nind

Jim Nind – painter, photographer, poet, philosopher and retired teacher, Jim Nind MA in Art and Design Education with a doctorate using ‘Creative Analytical Practice’ (art) as his methodology now spends a great deal of his time focused upon creative activity. With his family, Jim came to Felixstowe in 1990 after 13 years in Leicestershire and before that London. Now very much part of our much loved art culture, Jim participates in the Suffolk Open Studios by exhibiting in his shed at the bottom of his garden on Ranelagh Road. This was open to the public during the weekends of June and here Jim spends a great deal of time exploring themes relating to the natural world. He is an ardent painter and photographer who focuses upon the experience of being ‘out-there’ under the sky and in the natural environment. Jim told me about the role that rambling has within his work: “Every time I walk out with my camera and my note-book I am adventuring the walk in the world. Every time I find a stream to follow, a languid pool, a wide horizon of water beneath an emblazoned sky I know why I am there - I am a pilgrim for the poetry I find there.”

We shouldn’t be surprised by Jim’s reference to poetry, for he spends as much time writing as he does painting and the words often relate to the photographs he takes. This is reflected in his recent collaboration with the Felixstowe Café Poets who celebrated their first anniversary with the publication of an anthology during May. Apart from writing some of the poems Jim designed the book and added his own photographs throughout to complement the words and make this a very visually poetic volume. Another of Jim’s books ‘Solvitur Ambulando’ (it is solved by walking) takes inspiration from his regular walk to Felixstowe Ferry:

“The accompanying text is a prose-poem written in response to a sequence of photographs taken on the walk to this place I know so well but which the book helped me discover anew. As I considered each photograph, new impetus came to my writing and it was as if I was discovering the walk, and the place, for the first time. Intended as a positive celebration of

Please mention

the beauty of the place, a darker theme emerged around our relationship with the beautiful but fragile biosphere which sustains our very existence.” Jim presented his book through a reading for the Felixstowe Book Festival. The experience of the local environment has been a major influence in Jim’s work and is reflected in many of his paintings. These explore themes of growing and flowing and invoke the harmonies of flowing water and growing woodland to be found in Suffolk. In his spare time, when he has any, Jim organises and curates the exhibition programme at the Cliff Top Café. This provides opportunities for Suffolk artists to show their work locally and for visitors to enjoy their work. Jim’s own paintings will be exhibited at the café during October and at the Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh, from September 11th – 16th. jim.autoverse@gmail.com www.autoverse-arts.co.uk

Local Lass

11

You may remember Felixstowe’s awesome local lass, from our June issue. We loved Aggy’s story so much that during her fundraising adventures for Cancer Research she’ll be featured with us each month. Over to you Aggy…

Make Aggy Waggy

Hi everyone! I’m your local, literate, likeable, loveable Lhasa Apso. Congratulations to Sarah for correctly answering last month’s competition question about me. I hope you enjoy your yummy curry! Last month I told you about my amazing owner who passed away with cancer earlier this year. Now let me tell you more about myself and what I’m up to. • My name is Agatha Jane, known to my many friends as ‘Aggy.’ • My current location is Far East (Felixstowe). • I was born on 27th August 2011. • I was educated in Barking. • I like writing, walking, sniffing dogs’ sniffy bits, being photographed, having my tummy tickled and treats. • My current career role is Fundraiser Extraordinaire. Please google Make Aggy Waggy. You will like what you see. Make sure you watch my video. I star as myself but it is a sad story, so prepare yourself with tissues. I am also a potential entrepreneur (see below.)* • My favourite colour is grey. • My role model is Greyfriars Bobby. • My ambition is to travel to Lhasa. I’m not entirely sure where that is but I think I have to change trains at Ipswich. *As a dog about town I am finding it impossible to buy a Lhasa latte. Lhasa Apsos know this is a yak milk drink, but readers without Tibetan heritage may not be familiar

with this delicious treat. I feel I have identified a business opportunity and will approach my bank, Barklays, about funding. If they turn me down, I’ll try Dogger Bank.

Talking of money, you may remember from my feature in June’s issue that my owner passed away from cancer earlier this year. My fundraising for Cancer Research would benefit hugely from readers’ largesse. Please donate by texting AGGY70 £1 (or more) to 70070 or visit: justgiving.com/makeaggywaggy. Or, if you see me out and about, I’ll waggily say hello and take your change in my collecting box. I might even feature you on my Facebook page so you can be famous too! WOOF!

Local Business Here’s the lovely Sue Hall to tell us about her cleaning company...

To Dust or Not to Dust The dust just keeps coming. Was it Quentin Crisp who said, “after two years it doesn’t get any worse!”? This time of year, the spiders are working overtime making their homes in yours too! If you are anything like me, I can always think of hundreds of better things to do than housework – which is why I have always had a cleaner. Have you thought of what you could do with an extra couple of hours each week? Let me help you think about that. You could: • Spend a couple of hours more with your children by the sea.

• Read that book!

• Take a walk along the Felixstowe seafront, perhaps stopping for ice cream in the sun.

… All a great deal more fun than housework! So what is two hours of your time worth? In Felixstowe £22.50 is all it would take each week to get you the same cleaner for two wonderful, carefree hours. So let Maid2Clean take the hard work out of your housework.

• Enjoy more time on your hobbies.

• Go out shopping with a friend and stop for a decadent cream tea - Felixstowe has plenty of lovely places to do both of those things and some are advertised in this magazine.

…. And so many more things.

Sue Hall, Managing Director • Play with your dog – I have three of them and they do need Maid2Clean (Suffolk) Ltd regular exercise of course but stimulation is important and 0800 878 6388 we should always make time to play. 0330 010 6388 • Catch up on your emails, letter writing, internet surfing, etc. Would you like to advertise your business? • Book that holiday. Just drop us a line at info@thefelixstowemagazine.com • Finish that novel.

Local Group

The Community String Orchestra The Community String Orchestra is a group of thirty plus local musicians formed over twenty years ago. Over these years they have not only enjoy playing works by composers from the 17th century to date but have also raised considerable monies for local charities. The members come from all over Suffolk and include professionals, teachers, gifted amateurs and players from grade five upwards. The group meet fortnightly at The Henley Community Centre in Henley, and are conducted by Felixstowe’s very own Andrew Fairley. This time last year, The Community String Orchestra produced a CD to raise funds for various forces charities, with a piece of Christmas music composed actually in the WW1 trenches in December in the Picardy region. It was performed there on Christmas day in 1914. Andrew discovered the piece in his library last year and arranged it for the string orchestra who gave its first hearing in Woodbridge in May 2014. Some recording artists in the

audience offered to make a recording of this and the Trench Flute to raise funds for military charities. To date this has been very successful. The Trench composition is by Fernand Halphen and is titled NOEL and had not been heard in this country ever. As it is so beautiful it deserves to be known, particularly as he gave his life for his Country. For over sixteen years Andrew has run a weekly Summer String course here in Suffolk, with often in excess of forty players attending. The course takes place in the last week of July (Monday to Friday) at Bredfield Village Hall near Woodbridge.

Violin, viola, cello and double bass players are welcome to apply to join the Community String Orchestra. To show your interest please contact Andrew on 01394 279005.
