Local News Where it all began in Felixstowe! Original DJ, Tony Prince tells Felixstowe Magazines about his time on Radio Caroline and more...
Radio Caroline’s 50th Anniversary
Photo by Mrs Dilys Calver taken in 1964
You may remember with enormous affection being a teenager in 1964, when, with a music drought in the land, you spent your nights burrowed beneath your pillow listening to Radio Caroline. Many of our audience saw the movie ‘The Boat that Rocked’ and none of them could understand why a bunch of young lads had to live on a ship broadcasting to the UK in the period which saw the arrival of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and all the other working-class wonders of the 1960s.
One day, the manager of English R&B singer Georgie Fame visited Radio Luxembourg’s English HQ in London’s Hertford Street. He had an appointment with the big boss Geoffrey Everett, himself a former DJ on the station. The manager was Ronan O’Rahilly, an Irish entrepreneur who wanted to know why Georgie’s new record was not getting any airtime at all. Everett explained to O’Rahilly that the record companies had to programme tunes, it had nothing to do with him. The last thing the Irishman said to Everett as he left his office was: “Well, in that case, I’ll have to start my own radio station! Everett laughed. This became the legendary meeting which sparked a teenage revolution. Ronan’s father had a shipyard in Greenore, Ireland. Within weeks, the local fishermen were gazing at a former Dutch ferry with quite an unusual feature; its mast was 120ft high!

Tony Prince in his Radio Caroline days...
Dropping anchor a seagull’s flight from Felixstowe, suddenly the air became filled with unadulterated pop. Simon Dee was one of the first DJs - his
first shift on board lasted 8 weeks, by which time the south of England became a new place. Suddenly, teenagers had colourful radio, where once there had only been radio where the government saw the obvious advantage of the BBC having the monopoly because it offered better political control than a local radio network. World War 1 saw the birth of modern spin. Prime Minister Lloyd George used the BBC to communicate with the nation, knowing the entire population would be listening because there was no alternative radio station.
I spent 2 years with Caroline. 50 years later, Radio Caroline continues legally online. A small, light ship has been moored on the Mersey waterfront to reincarnate Caroline North for this month of celebration of all we achieved. A pirate DJ Day reunion in Amsterdam attracted 450 anoraks, together with a panel of 18 surviving DJs such as Johnny Walker, Robbie Dale, Roger ‘Twiggy’ Day and myself. You might consider putting this article in the hands of your kids and grandkids so that they realise Great Britain didn’t endure just two World Wars - there was a third and I was lucky enough to have been on the front line. This third ‘world war’ was staged by teenagers; the first time in history that they had become a voice and a community that were no longer ‘seen and not heard’ - Tony Prince

A Day in the Life of a Paralegal
Jackamans’ newest recruit, Fiona Sturgeon, explains what life is like in a busy high street law firm. The last two years of my life have by far been the busiest; it feels like only yesterday that I decided to return to university to complete my Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course in the hope of one day becoming a fully-fledged solicitor. I am glad to say that, today, the hard work and late-night revision sessions have paid off as I have recently joined Jackamans and hope to start my training contract with the firm in July.
I have been assisting in the private client department in Felixstowe since January and have thoroughly enjoyed putting the theory I have learned over the years into practice. As part of such a busy and in-demand team I have had the opportunity to experience a wide range of matters, including trusts, wills, probate, tax and Powers of Attorney. I love being in a department that is so clientfocussed, really getting to grips with what is most important to the client so that we can help as best we can. Unfortunately, the very nature of a lot of private client
work means that people need us at times of tragedy and sadness. I can only hope that I follow in my supervisor’s footsteps, trying to make the best of a bad situation and making difficult times more manageable. Over the past few months what I’ve learned above all is that knowledge of the law is not enough; when clients come to us in times of need they expect and deserve much more that that. With the Jackamans’ team behind me I’m very much looking forward to joining and serving the Felixstowe community as a trainee solicitor. I’ll be sure to keep you all updated with my progress!
If you would like Jackamans’ assistance on any private client matters, do contact our Felixstowe office on 01394 279636 or email carol.lockett@jackamans.co.uk. (Fiona assists Carol Lockett, the head of the Wills and Probate department at Jackamans). For general information please contact our website – www.jackamans.co.uk.

4. Body Measurements - An effective way to monitor your success is to take regular body measurements. These measurements will often include your blood pressure, resting pulse rate, body fat percentage, and diameter of specific areas. A trainer can help you monitor these on a regular basis to chart your progress.
7. Correct Technique - Using the proper technique can help you obtain faster results and avoid potential injury. Most people have limited time to exercise, so it makes sense to make your workout time as effective as possible.
ss Fe
3. Nutritional Guidance - Proper nutrition is critical to reaching your health and fitness goals. You can’t ‘outexercise’ a bad diet. A personal trainer can give you this expertise to ensure your diet is working alongside your physical activity levels.
6. Motivation - It can be very difficult to motivate yourself, but a good personal trainer should do that for you. It’s important to find a personal trainer that you get on with and who provides you with the motivation you need.
ne
2. Goal Setting - If you don’t have a goal then how will you know when you have achieved it? Personal trainers understand the importance of setting goals that are realistic and attainable for you as an individual.
5. Accountability & Consistency - You have paid for sessions, so you’re going to turn up every week. Your personal trainer will be setting you weekly targets to aim for and working regularly with them gives you the consistency you need to reach your goals.

1. Results - People who work with personal trainers reach their goals, it’s simple as that!

A Taxi Service with Lots of Differences! Hello! We are Helpful Cabs. We have been serving Felixstowe, Trimley and Kirton since January 2009. You might have seen our drivers, Alan and Stanley, driving our black wheelchair-adapted/ 7-seater and recently-acquired blue Estate/MPV (which can carry up to 6 people) around the town. We have become known for being willing to take that extra time and effort to give you, our customer, the service we feel you deserve, like taking your luggage or shopping into your destination if desired. Or, we can do your shopping! Our vehicles have a combined capacity of 13, offering comfort and versatility. Our wheelchair-adapted vehicle, which can carry either up to 7 or 1 wheelchair plus three additional passengers, is the only wheelchair-adapted taxi in the town. It is also ideal for pushchairs; no need to collapse and reassemble it, meaning far less hassle – ideal if you also have lots of bags (and with a baby or small child, the chances are you will have a fair amount to carry around).
We are also animal friendly. We frequently carry dogs The phone is usually manned Monday to Friday 7am– the largest to date being a St Bernard. 8pm, Saturday 8am-early hours of Sunday morning, but we can do journeys outside of these times by prior arrangement. BASIC was asked to take part in an ITV survey regarding the use of food banks.
The survey produced some startling results which were published nationally. It showed 182,000 food parcels were being distributed by just 45 independent food banks. In Felixstowe we have BASIC and the Salvation Army who provide food to local residents in need.
The major reason for the increase in food bank donations is the changes in the benefits system.

Here is the first of a series of PR and Marketing tips from the wonderful Helen Rudd, director of Prominent PR...
How social media can be an effective tool for your business... “I haven’t got time for social media, I’ve got real work to do!” is something I overheard whilst on the train last week. Social media is a huge part of what I do and I’ve seen it dramatically increase the bottom line of a business, so this got me thinking. Are there really still people out there who don’t see the value of having a presence on and actively using social media platforms? Twitter has 645 million users, whilst Facebook is reported to have 1.3 billion. Both platforms are free to use and a post on each can take seconds. They allow you to promote special offers, company news, recruit staff, show the personality of your business, comment on industry news and sell products.
Not only that, social media gives you a free and easy way to interact with your customers. You can solve issues or complaints the moment you hear of them, you can answer questions and check on what your competitors are doing. It’s really not rocket science and there aren’t many ‘don’ts’ when it comes to using it. If you’re not on Twitter and Facebook at least, then you are losing business.
For more about using social media, or hints and tips about how to promote your business, check out my website www.prominentpr.co.uk or find me on: Twitter @prominentpr or Facebook.com/prominentprservices.
Previously Vice Chair for six months working closely with her predecessor, Andrew Rowdon of Andrew Rowdon Travel Ltd, Rachel is an experienced solicitor with East Anglian law firm Margary + Miller, where she works as Head of Dispute Resolution at the firm’s Felixstowe office. The calm and assured manner she applies, added to the legal knowledge she has gained since qualifying 20 years ago, will enable her to manage a wide range of issues on the Chamber’s behalf and will make her a strong and capable representative for its members. Rachel said: “I have been advising businesses in and around Felixstowe for the past seven years, so I am keen to learn more about the range of businesses and help to provide a louder voice for individual members than each could achieve on their own.” “I will work hard to be a positive influence to the development of local business and employment opportunities, in order to ensure the town remains a vibrant place to live, work and visit. I also intend to do all I can to improve the ability of local businesses to trade and compete with bigger competition.” If you are interested in joining the Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce, please visit the website at www. felixstowechamber.co.uk. Local News Introducing to you an amazing new drug-education project in Felixstowe...
Local Exhibition to Raise Awareness for the New Drug-Free Felixstowe Group In a world where drugs are prevalent and in a town where drugs are surprisingly accessible, our editor is rounding up the forces to have our very own Drug-Free Felixstowe Group! Here she is to tell you all about it...
Hello Felixstowe! I’d like to fill you in on our plans to get this group truly on its feet, and to do so, I may need a bit of your help! Here’s what we’ve got so far, and also the ways you too can be involved if drug-education, having fun while being effective, working in a team or simply making an impact on Felixstowe floats your boat:
Resources The award-winning Foundation for a Drug-Free World (www.drugfreeworld.org) are generously giving us whatever materials we need, including an Educator’s Kit, which has posters, booklets, a DVD full of real-life stories and even a series of ready-made lesson plans that teach youth about cocaine, marijuana, LSD, alcohol, methamphetamines, heroin and more ... combined, these materials help to give vibrant workshops in schools, youth centres and other facilities.
Training The Educator’s Kit makes workshops so easy to do that it’s easy to train anyone to deliver their own workshops. In fact, one thing that works so well is peer to peer training, where youth get the chance to make a change! Getting youth involved helps them to grow skills in life that can help them in so many other areas; presentation skills, project management, communication, teaching, confidence, motivation, the sense of achievment after creating a positive change... and those youth can go on to train their peers! This is education for children, teachers, youth leaders, police officers, college lecturers, parents... whoever wants to make a change, eradicate the insidious influence of drugs in our society and give youth the chance of a drug-free future.
Projects I’m really keen to get the public involved in holding events in Felixstowe and beyond, like exhibitions, concerts, football matches, booklet distribution days... and more. There’s lots of fun ideas we can use to get the message out there and encourage our youth (and adults of course!!) to lead a drugfree life!
Quiz Question 5:
What is a village without a church called?
The Drug-Free Felixstowe Exhibition This exhibition I am holding is in May, coinciding with Art About Town (a pre-event to the Suffolk Open Studios event in June), where local businesses support local artists. The exhibition is 20th-31st May, at Studio Bushfire on Hamilton Road.
I am so grateful to Carl and Zoe at Studio Bushfire for supporting me as an artist, and also the Drug-Free Felixstowe project, and would like to give them a special mention; they are completely brilliant people and so friendly, encouraging and helpful! You can also view some of my art in Pierrot and Cafe Bencotto, which are also on Hamilton Road!
20% of all sales goes straight into the Drug-Free Felixstowe pot to help our volunteers hold fab events in the town!
Open View Party We’ll be holding a special Open View where we’ll have locally sourced food and drink. This event is free for all so please bring your friends and family, buy lots of raffle tickets (see below), view and buy the art and have the chance to talk to me about your drug-awareness ideas! Our Raffle We are holding a raffle prize which gets drawn at the end of June!!! Wahoo! There are several prizes to win, with our top prize being a £200 voucher to buy any original artwork on display or have your own commission by yours truly! You can take a look at the artwork on www.mandeepbirdy.com. To enter the raffle:
• see Zoe at the Studio Bushfire with your £2 raffle fee. You can buy as many raffle tickets as you like!
• Go online: www.felixstowemagazines.com/community. Click on the online donate button, donate however much you like, and we will recieve your email confirmation which will enter you into the draw.
See you there!!!
