Academic Departments Art: Year 7 students completed two modules during the course of the year which included a sea-side themed, multi medium piece, based on the work of Paul Klee. This was followed by a three dimensional project using clay. Small figures were created after students had completed a series of studies from medieval religious sculptures. They also looked at the contemporary work of Anthony Gormley who created ‘The Field’ which filled a whole gallery space with thousands of small clay figures. Year 8 students studied portraiture, which required them to attempt self portraits using photographs. These were used to produce some three dimensional pieces based on the work of Welsh artist Shani Rhys James, whose work builds up the surface with tissue paper before working into it with paint. Year 9 students studied the formal elements of still life drawing, working from groups of objects set up in the Art Department. Scale, proportion, guide lines and, eventually, shading techniques in a variety of mediums were explored. This work was then used to develop some Cubist paintings based on the work of Pablo Picasso and George Braque. The second module of the year required students to research the Pop art of American artist Roy Lichtenstein. Using their own photographs, students attempted to produce portraits in the same style as Lichtenstein’s giant cartoon paintings. Year 10 students visited Thurstaston Common to collect visual information as a resource for their investigation into the art of landscape. A variety of pieces were produced using different mediums including pencil, charcoal, paint, collage and plaster. They then researched abstract landscape art to produce a personal response. Students also visited the Tate Liverpool to look at three different artists interpretation of landscape painting . Monet, Turner and Twombly offered contrasting styles that students used as an influence for their own work. Year 11 students completed coursework based on their visit to the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum. A variety of personal responses were produced during the year culminating in their mock GCSE exam piece based on the same theme. From January onwards, students worked on their exams which required them to produce a final piece which had to be completed in ten hours. An exhibition of the students work can be seen in the Art Department. Students visited the Liverpool Tate to look at all the exhibitions currently on display at the gallery. They were asked to write a critical response on their favourite Art pieces. Lower Sixth students completed two modules as part of their AS course. They produced a variety of responses to the theme of Expressive Portraiture. Thorough research and a visit to the National Portrait Gallery in London allowed students the opportunity to develop their own styles of work culminating in some final pieces based on themselves and family members. The exam module theme was “Covert and Obscure”, offering students a broad spectrum to develop a personal response. Upper Sixth students completed two modules after visits to the Tate Modern, Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery in London, where they were able to use valuable resource material to generate ideas and develop their work. Module One was based on the Italian Futurists’ paintings and sculpture, while the exam theme for this year was ‘Inside and outside’. All sixth form work can be viewed in the art department in McAllester building. The year ended with a four-day exhibition in the Bushell Hall showing a selection of work by students at GCSE, AS and A Level.

Classics: A Latin fun day was held on 6th October at Deva (Roman Chester) for our boys and girls in Year 7. During their visit to the Grosvenor Museum, students had the chance to handle real Roman artefacts from the Roman period found at Chester. They also took part in an archaeological discovery and a hands-on session at the Dewa Experience. The day finished with a guided tour around the Roman Walls and the amphitheatre. Year 9 Classical Greek students and those studying Latin in Year 8 took part in a workshop on Greek and Roman civilisation in October. Not only did they have the experience of discovering artefacts on the ground as archaeologists, but they also dressed up as hoplites and tasted the delicacies of Greco-Roman cuisine! Following visits to Rome and Pompeii in October 2011, the Classics Department organised a visit to Greece during half-term in Michaelmas Term 2012. The party, comprising twenty students and three members of staff, commenced their visit at Athens, exploring the Classical sites there before transferring to Delphi. After visiting the temple of Apollo and other archaeological remains, the party drove to Olympia, in order to see where the original Olympic Games were held. From there they proceeded to Tolon, where they spent three days, so that they could visit Mycenae, Epidavros, Nauplion, Corinth and Sparta. A Sixth Form Latin Text Day at Manchester University was organised for those studying Latin at A Level. The purpose of the visit was to attend a series of lectures delivered by specialist professors and directly related to the authors and texts prescribed for their summer examination. Our current Latin students in Year 10 and those prospective GCSE Latin students currently in Year 9 attended an Ancient Market Day, a major schools event organised by the Archaeology, Classics & Egyptology Department at the University of Liverpool on Wednesday, 15 th May. This was an interactive day designed to allow pupils to explore aspects of the Ancient World through a set of hands-on activities led by experts, including Ancient food, Roman clothing, shopping, mummification, inscriptions, etc in order to encourage students to think about concepts like identity, trade and communication. The event was held in and around Abercromby Square, in the heart of the University of Liverpool. Design and Technology: The GCSE Product Design and Systems and Control pupils have produced coursework showing ability in a range of materials and creativity within their design work. This year the Design and Technology and Art departments held a joint exhibition event to showcase pupils’ work. At AS level in Product Design Benjamin Pearson and Rebecca Davies, in particular, achieved very high marks in their coursework unit. Benjamin designed an iPod dock for his favourite yachting company. His design inspiration came from the blend of materials used to manufacture yachts and the cleats that are found on deck. He used the laser cutter to build up his product. Rebecca designed an iPod dock for Steinway pianos. She took inspiration from the design and impact of the grand pianos that the company is so famous for making. She used bent plywood to create the contoured shapes of her design and consideration was taken to fit all of the electronics inside her compact product. As an example of work at AS Level in Systems and Control, Tom Finch designed an automatic and environmentally friendly plant watering device. Designed primarily for greenhouse or polytunnel use, the device senses when the soil is dry and allows water from a remote reservoir (water butt) to flow through it. It is powered from a large lead acid battery which is recharged by the incorporated solar panel. A2 Product Design pupils are given a wide choice of design brief for their coursework project. Of particular note was that produced by Tom Weller, who designed and made a seating unit for our own Pre-Prep School. It provides a fun seating area as well as planting and storage space.

Design and Technology: (cont...) As part of their theory work, our Product Design pupils carry out a number of case studies. This year they have been able to go on visits to Linpac Allibert, Winsford (where they manufacture returnable plastic packaging) and to the McLaren Factory in Woking (where they design the McLaren F1 cars and manufacture the McLaren MP4-12c). McLaren also brought a McLaren MP4-12c into school, (a £250,000 sports car) for the pupils to study. Economics: Target 2.0 is a national competition between the best students of Economics from schools all around the country. Students work in teams of four and the aim is to advise a panel of judges from the Bank of England on how best to meet the government's target for inflation, 2.0%. It involves a fifteen-minute presentation with well researched evidence that supports the teams' arguments relating to decisions on monetary policy, involving setting interest rates and quantitative easing. They are then subjected to a further fifteen minutes of questioning by the panel who test them on their knowledge of the theory, the data and the whole economy. This year the team comprised Charles McCulloch (Captain), Nick Gill, Ashley Williams and Tom Woollons. The team won its regional heat and progressed to the northern finals. Student Investor was a national “stocks and shares” competition entered by over 50 pupils in Years 10, 11 and 12. The winners were the aptly named ‘Team Money’ from Year 11, comprising Samuel Bowler, Matthew Corlett, Tommy Keenan and Andrew Sherman. On a stake of £100,000, they made over £9,000 in 3 months. Business Studies was an option at A-level for the first time this year, and as part of the course 8 students visited Downland Ltd, a family run bedding company based in Liverpool. They had a tour of the factory and even had a go at making their own pillows, which they got to keep. Four Economists took part in the Comenius International Research Project for the first time this year. They were Thomas Atherton, Sally Boffey, Thomas Gibbs and Francis Good. They worked as part of international teams with fellow Economists from Spain and Germany. They spent time in businesses both domestically and abroad, and presented their findings to families, friends and the media in Pamplona, Spain English: Year 8 went on a theatre trip to The Empire Theatre in Liverpool to see a production of ‘Phantom of the Opera’. Year 9 went to The Royal Court to see a production of ‘Macbeth’ but (owing to a fire alarm) the performance had to be abandoned, so we arranged for a drama workshop in School instead. Year 11 students participated in a drama workshop in School organised by the ‘Top Box’ Theatre Company, based on their Literature set text, ‘Of Mice and Men’. A residential Sixth Form visit to London took place this year. The cultural visit included a play at the National Theatre, a tour of The Globe Theatre and a trip to the British Library. Arran Byers wrote a more detailed account of this trip for ‘In Focus’. In the Rotary Youth Speaks to the Nation debating competition, we entered two Year 7 teams and one of them was awarded the President’s Choice and they then delivered their speech to Rotarians at Prenton Golf Club. We also entered a Year 9 team; they went through to the regional final at Theatre Clwyd. They were awarded third prize and won a £5 voucher each. Sixth Formers took part in the North West forum of the European Youth Parliament . We also hosted the first round of the Schools’ Mace debating competition. Our Year 11 students also took part in the English Speaking Union’s Schools’ Public Speaking competition. We hosted, for the first time, Liverpool Law Society’s Debating competition.

Our Inspecting Officer, Gp Capt Ian Tolfts, RAF, Director of Selection and Recruiting at RAF Cranwell, saw both schools and met both Heads, he took part in a number of activities and spoke to many of the Cadets. The 2014 Biennial Inspection will be led by the Army. The RAF fleet of Tutors was grounded this year and hope to resume Air Experience Flying in the near future. Gliding continued uninterrupted and 6 cadets flew at RAF Woodvale. Cadets will be attending annual camp at RAF Cranwell from 10-18 August 2013. The National Cadet Orienteering Competition was held at Warcop Training Area on 4th November. We won both Junior Boys and Junior Girls competitions. The traditional Remembrance Sunday service and parade was held in Chapel on Sunday 11th November and a parade was held at Upton Hall School on 9 th November. The RN section completed afloat training at the marine lake, West Kirby. Cadets will be attending various courses at HMS Bristol over the summer. Cdt Sgt Ben Pearson successfully completed the Nescliffe Cadet Leadership Course and achieved an ‘outstanding’ course report. As a result of Shooting being curtailed during the year, we had to cancel all our ranges at short notice, and cadets entered the competition season with little or no practice. Two teams were entered in the Cadet SAAM in September 2102 and we did well in the pairs competition in the CLRA in May. The performance at the CCRS Meet at the National Shooting Ground, Bisley, was patchy but everybody showed improvement and several creditable scores were achieved. We also discovered some unexpected Clay Pigeon talent! A consortium Training Weekend at Warcop was held in March. A further consortium weekend is planned for September. On 4th June, the Mercian Regiment were presented with their new colours at the Four-Way Stadium in Worcestershire by HRH The Prince of Wales. Five cadets from every school associated with the regiment were invited attend and Cdt Sgt Ben Pearson carried the CCF National Banner. The parade was led by the oldest Badged member of the regiment, Capt A Joseph Over 200 Year 8 pupils from both Schools took part in the CCF Taster Day in June and sampled a variety of activities, from Mountain Biking to Archery via Grenade Throwing and Fieldcraft.

Drama: In October there was a production of an AS level English Literature set text ‘Kindertransport’. Actors ranged from Eleanor Hilton in Year 10, Siân Round Year 11 and Sixth Form students, Rebecca Davies, Amy Naylor, Caroline Welsh and Alexander Karus-McElvogue. In .February there was a production of ‘The Infant’, performed by Alexander Karus-McElvogue, Siân Round, Nicholas Gill and Gregory Young. A larger cast were involved in the production of the A2 set text, ‘The Revenger’s Tragedy’ which was performed in April, with an original musical score by Luca Galvani. The year finished with a promenade production of Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’. Helping with all of our productions throughout the year, including make-up, lighting, stage management, properties and music were Christopher Morris, Luca Galvani, Katie Laing, Arran Byers, Caroline Welsh, Andrew Sherman and Daniel Gaskell. Duke of Edinburgh Award: Sixteen students signed up to do the Gold Award last September, together with forty to do the Silver. This meant that there were three Gold qualifying expeditions at the end of the summer term and seven Silver expeditions. Once again, a camp craft afternoon and evening training event was held in the Michaelmas Term. However, the usual navigation training day at Moel Famau had to be abandoned owing to the very cold and snowy conditions which we experienced in March. This year all the practice expeditions took place in North Wales and the qualifying expeditions will be undertaken in the Yorkshire Dales. The students have shown themselves adept at using the eDofE accounts which replaced the familiar blue passports which an earlier generation used to keep track of the progress of their awards. The mapping package attached to the website has been invaluable from the point of view of expedition route planning. In keeping with the ethos of the award, a greater degree of responsibility has been devolved to the different teams in terms of selecting routes and completing paperwork for the DofE expeditions advisory groups. Another innovation has been a move, at Gold level, towards expeditions with at least one night of ‘wild camping.’ This is actually not something out of one of the books by Maurice Sendak, but a reference to a camping experience away from the amenities expected at valley camp sites. Students continue to choose from a wide variety of options in the Volunteering, Skills and Physical Activities sections of the Award. Many do voluntary work in charity shops; others assist with uniformed organisations and children’s nurseries. The many sports clubs on the Wirral ensure that there is never any shortage of options when it comes to choosing a physical activity and there are many more available in School. Edward Sherrard and Ian Loch completed their Silver Awards and Sarah Bibby and Tom Weller successfully completed their Gold Awards. Alice Hancock stood out as someone who completed Silver and Gold in the same academic year. Georgina Sudderick finished all sections and is awaiting the award of her Gold, as is Luke Weller (OB) who has completed all Silver sections. Others are close to completion. Once again, the challenge of the programme lies not only in completing the expeditions section, which nearly everyone does, but in finishing off the other sections, which requires individual initiative, time and effort. Nevertheless, even for those who never complete the award, or do so as young adults, there is a variety of excellent experiences on which they can look back.

The first part of the trip was spent working in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar with the Fraternité Notre-Dame Orphanage. The group were kept very busy by the 21 children there aged from 4-13. organising activities, helping the Sisters out with jobs around the Orphanage and learning some traditional Mongolian games. The team then had to arrange their own transport in minivans for an epic 3 day journey on dirt roads to travel to Lake Khövsgöl in the North of the country, near to the Russian border. From here they completed a 5 day foot trek, followed by a 5 day horse trek. During this time they were responsible for cooking their own food and wild camping in some spectacular sites. Some even tried the Mongolian national sport of Wrestling! The four-day return journey to the capital was by “road” (often dry river beds) and a night in a first-class carriage on the Trans-Mongolian railway. To finish the team spent a day in Beijing and visited the Great Wall. For the entire trip, the pupils were in charge of everything including food, the budget, travel arrangements and navigation.
