Academic Departments Art: Year 7 students have studied the work of Franz Marc and produced large oil pastel pieces using either their own pets or wild animals as inspiration. Their pieces featured bold, expressive use of colour. The second module involved a visit to the Pier Head Ferry where students made sketches and took photographs of the architecture and detailed studies of decoration. Year 8 students were given the chance to complete some observational drawings of the Overdale building. Work was produced from these using water colour and ink. The results can be seen on display in Overdale. Year 9 students completed some cubist still life studies of everyday objects. Pattern, colour and texture were added to create an individual finish to their cubist compositions. Year 10 students have developed two pieces of work based on their personal interests. This has ranged from Jimi Hendrix to youth fashion and the pieces have combined three dimensional images with their own drawings Year 11 students have produced a variety of work using ropes and chains as inspiration. A large imaginative composition has been created in media selected by the students. This work will be included in their final exhibition. Lower Sixth students have completed two modules as part of their AS submission. Module one has been based on their response to the „built environmentâ€&#x;, each student developing a variety of experimental expressionistic compositions. Upper Sixth produced a wide range of work, from political and religious comment to work incorporating a musical piece scored by the artist himself. Classics: A Latin fun day was held on 6th October at Deva (Roman Chester) for our boys and girls in Year 7. During their visit to the Grosvenor Museum, students had the chance to handle real Roman artefacts from the Roman period found at Chester. They also took part in an archaeological discovery and a hands-on session at the Dewa Experience. The day finished with a guided tour around the Roman Walls and the amphitheatre. Year 9 Classical Greek students and those studying Latin in Year 8 took part in a workshop on Greek and Roman civilisation in October. Not only did they have the experience of discovering artefacts on the ground as archaeologists, but they also dressed up as hoplites and tasted the delicacies of Greco-Roman cuisine! 21 Classicists across the School took part in a trip to Italy over October half term. The visit included the Classical city of Rome (Colosseum, Arco di Constantino, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon), as well as the Vatican and Monte Cassino. The group had the opportunity to climb up to the summit of Mount Vesuvius on their way from the ancient remains of Herculaneum to the city of Pompeii. The trip ended with a visit to the Archaeological Museum at Naples and Sorrento.

Design and Technology: New to the Design and Technology department this year was the teaching of Year 6. The pupils have come up from the Prep once a week and been able to gain a wide variety of practical skills and experience. The first cohort of Year 11 pupils to take the GCSE in Product Design produced a wide variety of coursework projects, ranging from Memphis inspired storage units, elaborate jewellery stands and an LED shadow clock. This year there was a record number of pupils applying for the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. Six of our pupils got through the first application stage and sat the written exam. Three then went on to the interview stage visiting Lancaster and Cambridge Universities for an intense day of interviews and activities. Competition was fierce with over 1100 applications from across the country. Deven Darshane, Kevin Wong and Oliver George will hear in July if they have been awarded a scholarship. The AS Product Design students have again been designing fully functional i-pod docks. Along with the practical work, each student produces a detailed design portfolio detailing the research, development and planning work that has gone in to their project. This year they have been using some new CAD software called Solid Works. This enables then to create very high quality 3D images of their designs. The AS pupils were also able to go on two industrial visits this year: the first was to the Jaguar Land Rover plant at Halewood and the second visit to the Mitchell group car dealership where they looked at the £340,000 Lexus LFA super car. The A2 Product Design students have an open design brief for their coursework module and they get to choose their own theme. All of the students this year decided to manufacture furniture projects with a multi-functional use. Tom Beaumont designed a chair that had an integral footstool incorporating a laser engraved chess board and coffee table. It was manufactured from high quality plywood that was shaped using our bag press. The upholstery was faux leather and was sewn using our new machines. George Wright decided to re-design an old fashioned writing desk to bring it up to date. It houses all of the portable electronic gadgets that a young professional would use and maintains the high quality feel of a more traditional piece of furniture. He hand veneered a plywood base and included a leather inlayed surface to echo the work of past designs. Mike Canner chose to pursue a design for an interlocking chair system which eventually evolved into a chaise longue design for the modern professional. He developed a very organic curved plywood form with faux leather upholstery to complement the blend of materials. Alex Davies and Alex Macaulay used their A2 Systems and Control project brief to develop very different products. They were tasked with creating a product using a complex control system to showcase their abilities in a range of DT areas. Alex Macaulay used pneumatics as his core technology to move a target for his .22 rifle competition shooting with the CCF. The product raises a target for a short period, and then lowers it out of sight. It repeats this several times automatically using a PIC control system which Alex designed, manufactured and programmed. The pneumatics is powered by a 4litre storage system (2 x 2litre ginger beer bottles!) which is pumped by hand, making the whole system „off grid‟ and portable. Continuing the portability theme, Alex Davis decided on a solar battery charger. To maximise the charging capacity, and thus the time needed to charge a battery, his product automatically tracks the sun both in direction and elevation throughout the day. His challenge was to make sure that the device was autonomous and needed no extra supply – in other words it had to charge the control system as well as the target battery. This complex problem was solved using PICs as his control, with stepper motors to move the solar panel array.

Economics: Target 2.0 is a national competition between the best students of Economics from schools all around the country. Students work in teams of four and the aim is to advise a panel of judges from the Bank of England on how best to meet the government's target of inflation, 2.0%. It involves producing a fifteen-minute presentation with well researched evidence that supports the teams' arguments relating to decisions on monetary policy, involving setting interest rates and quantitative easing. They are then subjected to a further fifteen minutes of questioning by the panel who test them on their knowledge of the theory, the data and the whole economy. This year the team comprised Bruno de Blaquière (Captain), David Boffey, Charles McCulloch, Elliot Smith and Oliver Subhedar. Although they didn't win, they did answer some of the most challenging questions asked and were commended on their ability and confidence in a high pressure environment. Student Investor was a national „stocks and shares‟ competition entered by over 50 pupils in Years 10, 11 and 12. The winners were the L6th team, comprising Jack Walker and Alex Watkins. On a stake of £100,000, they made over £11,000 in 4 months and came 196th out of 7000 teams. English: The Drama Club provided lunch-time and after-school sessions throughout the year. Year 7 went on a theatre trip to The Octagon Theatre in Bolton to see a production of „Wizard of Oz‟. They wrote reviews subsequently published in „In Focus‟. Year 9 went to The Octagon to see a production of „Macbeth‟. Year 11 students participated in a drama workshop in School organised by the „Top Box‟ Theatre Company, based on their Literature set texts. Spelling Bee: Year 7 Spelling team „Total Recall‟ participated in „The Times‟ competition online. A residential Sixth Form visit to New York took place this year. The cultural visit included a Broadway show (Phantom of the Opera) and a Drama workshop, also on Broadway, with actors from the production. Sam Davies wrote a more detailed account of this trip for „In Focus‟. Debating: Three Year 7 teams and one Year 9 team entered the Rotary Club‟s „Youth Speaks to the Nation‟ competition. The Year 9 team went through to the regional final at Theatre Clwyd. They were invited to present their speech to Wirral‟s mayor at Wallasey town hall and at Prenton golf club where they addressed Birkenhead Rotary Club. Sixth Formers took part in the North West forum of the European Youth Parliament and won through to the National Final in Liverpool in September. We also hosted the first round of the Schools‟ Mace debating competition. Our Year 11 students also took part in the English Speaking Union‟s Schools‟ Public Speaking competition. A new writing project, run by The National Theatre, „New Views‟, engaged a group of Sixth Form students. Writer, Kellie Smith, provided an introduction to writing plays and offered specific guidance about script writing. Literature students in the U6 attended a Study day on their set texts „Hamlet‟ and „The Revenger‟s Tragedy‟ in Stratford at the Shakespeare Centre. They then attended a performance of Richard III at the Swan Theatre.

Geography: Year 7 pupils studied the coastal defences of the Wirral Coastline in late September. Year 8 travelled to Malham in the Yorkshire Dales in May to study limestone landscapes and tourism. Year 9 pupils carried out questionnaires and environmental quality surveys in Southport in March. GCSE students went to Bowness in the Lake District in June to study the impact of tourism on a “honey pot site” in a National Park. Lower Sixth AS Geographers studied river discharge, channel crosssections and bed load in North Wales in April. History: Our Year 7 pupils visited “Medieval” Birkenhead. At Wirral Archives, they discovered what Wirral looked like at the time of the Domesday Book and the catastrophic impact of the Black Death. Investigative tasks were carried out at Birkenhead Priory and the year group also took a trip on the Mersey Ferry. During the Year 7 French trip in May, the pupils visited Étaples Military Cemetery in Bolougne. Year 8 pupils took part in a hands-on workshop and play performed by Top Box Productions. This was in support of their study of the English Civil War. As part of their study of the Industrial Revolution, Year 9 pupils visited The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. A guided tour of the sewers of Victorian Manchester and a textile demonstration were the highlights of the day. GCSE historians travelled on the annual First World War Battlefields trip to Belgium and France. They spent four days in and around the Somme and the Ypres Salient. Two students laid a wreath at the Menin Gate on behalf of the School at the Last Post. Lower Sixth students travelled to Manchester for a series of lectures on the Russian Revolution. The talks were delivered by renowned experts from the world of academia. Mathematics: Twenty five Sixth Form students entered the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge Competition and ten of them won certificates. Andrew Hoyland, James Moses, Harry Sturgess and Jack Hulmes won Silver certificates, with Andrew and Harry also receiving Best in School certificates. Forty Year 9 and Year 10 pupils entered the UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge Competition and thirty of them were awarded certificates. Gold certificate winners were Sam Berkson, Kevin Wong, Jack Hussey, Lewis Tran and Matthew Corlett. Silver certificate winners were Oliver George, Paul Wynne, Benjamin Pearson, Thomas Atherton, Alexander Saverimutto, John Warburton, Stanley Billington, Joshua Bramwell, Andrew Sherman, Anas Ahmed, Benjamin Unsworth, Harry Knowles, Maro Kyriacou, Ross Hepton and Grace Keenan. Kevin Wong also won the Best in School certificate and he and Jack Hussey were invited to take part in the follow-on Kangaroo competition. Some thirty Year 7 and Year 8 pupils entered the UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge and twenty one of them were awarded certificates. Those winning gold were Ben Appleby, Thomas Corran, Connie Sturgess, Shikhar Kumar and Tom Parkes. Silver certificate winners were Emily Pulford, Tom Cottier, Safiya Rafiq and Adrian Dyu. Shikhar Kumar also received the Best in School certificate.

Birkenhead School once again played host to eighteen schools from the Merseyside and Cheshire area for the regional final of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge. Our two teams consisted of James Budworth, Thomas Corran, Sam Gavin-Pitt, Josh Gibson, Paul Gogerty, Sebastian Mactaggart, Max Shah and Harry Unsworth. In November, a team consisting of Jack Hulmes, Harry Sturgess and Andrew White took part in the regional heat of the UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge competing against twenty nine schools from the North West of England. Several pupils from Years 7-10 entered the Mathematical Education on Merseyside Challenge and Senior Challenge Competitions. These competitions are entered by pupils from across the North West of England and North Wales. Prize winners were Joshua Gibson and Shikhar Kumar who were invited to a presentation evening held at the University of Liverpool. Sixteen Year 11 students attended a series of three lectures at the Liverpool Playhouse on Mathematics topics as diverse as "When Intuition Goes Wrong" and "The Maths of Juggling". Modern Languages: German Exchange: Seventeen pupils took part in this year‟s German Exchange with the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule, Tübingen from 14th to 23rd October 2011, having hosted the group in Birkenhead at the end of Summer Term, 2011. We were taken on various excursions including day trips to Freiburg, Reutlingen and the Ritter Sport chocolate factory. We will host the next group from Germany at the end of the Summer Term, 2012. Spanish Exchange: Our partnership is with the Spanish school, Colegio Santa Teresa, in Pamplona. Twenty-six pupils from Year 9 upwards participated in this year‟s Exchange in October and their Spanish partners visited us in November. Year 7 French Trip: In May, Year 7 pupils spent two nights in a centre in Calais. From here pupils went on various trips, and had many opportunities to practise some of the French they had learnt during the year. Visits took place to typically French venues such as the market place and traditional cafés and a chocolate factory. A hypermarket visit also featured. Vocab Express Competition: Vocab Express is an online program used by the Modern Languages department for revising vocabulary. In the summer, its producers invited us to participate in the Vocab Express European Day of Languages Challenge (VE EDLC). 4700 pupils from 64 schools took part and pupils practised and learnt as much vocabulary as possible over the week of the challenge. The prize winners were as follows: - Year 10: Jack Hussey (Spanish) 32810 points - 4th position - Year 11: Michael Gazvani (Spanish) 12500 points - 26th position Music: Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Examination Results for 2011/2012: 42 candidates in total : 5 passed with Distinction, 13 passed with Merit, 17 passed and 7 took the Preparatory test. During the summer of 2011, Chapel Choir with Venice Brass toured to Italy, performing concerts in Venice and Padova, and singing Mass in San Zaccharia and Padova Cathedral. Sam Bowler, Alexander Herod, Jack Hodgson, Elizabeth Howse, Matthew Oulton, Jack Price, Christopher Rowlands, Jaime Stanton, Edward Tilleard successfully auditioned and were formally admitted to the Chapel Choir in September. The new Choir Prefect was Jack Granby, the Head Chorister Tom Granby, and the Deputy Head Chorister Edward George. Leading boys were Christopher Lansdown, Finlay Gordon, Bronwen Morris and Tom Wimpenny. The Organ Scholarship was awarded to Matthew Rogers.

The Chapel Choir settled in to prepare music for the Sunday services, Advent Carol Service, the Services of Nine Lessons and Carols and the Midnight Eucharist on Christmas Eve, at which eighteen former choir members, now at university or beyond, also sang. During the year, the Choir performed music composed by Marco Galvani, both in Chapel and on tour. An Autumn Senior School Concert was held in the Michaelmas Term, involving Venice Brass, the Inter-Schools Brass Ensemble, Senior Concert Band, Big Band, Cantata Choir and soloists. In the Lent term, the “whole School” Spring Concert took place in Bushell Hall and featured all the School ensembles and BPS Choir and orchestra. In March the Big Band and other School musicians, presented a Jazz Evening, organised entirely by the pupils. Also in March, the Choral Society, Chapel Choir, Cantata Choir and Prep School Choir sang in a performance of Karl Jenkins‟ “The Armed Man” in the Philharmonic Hall with the Liverpool Sinfonia. The programme also included Elgar‟s “Give unto the Lord” and his „cello concerto, played by international soloist Alice Neary. Bar Line, the a cappella group started the year with a concert at Melrose Hall, Hoylake on the back of which they secured the first of many private bookings this year. The boys have undertaken a series of “Singing in the Community” performances at local primary schools – a project they plan to extend further next year. They sang at Chester Cathedral at Christmas and gave a performance in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research in the Bushell Hall in January. They have sung in School concerts, the Jazz Night and were the „guest artists‟ for House Music. February saw a recording collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University for their project “Liverpool and the Sea” and in March they were awarded the prize for “Outstanding Musicality” at the national finals of the UK Voice competition in London. After recording their first album in June, they were the headline act for Willaston Village Diamond Jubilee Concert and played a number of new works by Marco Galvani at a concert in the Williamson Art Gallery. They rounded the year off where they started – with another concert at Melrose Hall. Science: The Chemistry Department received „The Good Schools Guide Award‟ for the best A level results achieved by boys in an English independent school. This year saw the introduction of an international research project that involved Neil Lawrence at Siemens in Stuttgart, Jack Granby and Curtis Wright in the University of Pamplona and Edward Sherrard and Harry Sturgess at Unilever on the Wirral. Each student was working in a team with other students from all 3 countries (UK, Germany and Spain) and the team based in England all received gold CREST awards for research into the sourcing of monomers from more sustainable raw materials. Andrew Hoyland received Nuffield Bursaries for research projects completed during the last summer break. He also received a gold CREST awards for his project on the half life of gold isotopes. The Senior Science Club achieved 8 gold CREST awards: Sarah Bibby, Callum Hepton, Jack Hulmes, Tarun Kodavatiganti, Louis McGrath, Harley Price, Aarush Sajjad and Rohith Srinivasan. Their awards were for a project on the effectiveness of the ingredients in Gaviscon.

The „Science in the Community‟ group has expanded to now include the Meols and Hoylake cub group and two nursery schools in Hoylake and Greasby. Alex Davies, Rhiannon Frostick, Allan Lowey and Daniel Quinn were the main contributers this year. Our outreach activities have come to the attention of the Association of Science Education. Bruno de Blaquière, Max Keeling, and James Kewin did a presentation at the Big Bang festival, whilst Dr Hughes and Dan Quinn did a similar presentation at the National conference. The Biology „UK Challenge‟ for Years 10 produced a gold medal for Sam Wells, with silver medals being won by Isabelle Brown, Amy Green, Ross Hepton, Tommy Keenan, Siân Round, Andrew Sherman, Matthew Williams and bronze for Anas Ahmed, Charlotte Dowling, Sam Gavin-Pitt, Harri Jones, James O‟Neill, Max Shah, Lewis Tran and Dan Walker. Tarun Kodavatiganti, Charles McCulloch and Harry Sturgess represented the school at the RSC Young Analyst competition. Jack Granby and Andrew White passed Open University degree modules in Genetics and Medical Science respectively. Andrew passed at the top level. The „Olympiads‟ produced two „Highly Commended‟ awards in Biology for Jack Granby and Charles McCulloch. Harry McGee won the second prize for his project during the Physics Master Class at the University of Liverpool. Jack Hulmes, Chris Morris, Tarun Kodavatiganti, Harry Sturgess and Jack Walker were highly commended for their design of a space station for The Space Science and Engineering Foundation. This year‟s team came second in the regional final of the „Top of the Bench‟ competition. It was made up of Sam Gavin-Pitt, Josh Gibbs, Andrew Sherman and Kevin Wong. The Science Club has had an opportunity to develop new activities this year, including a murder mystery, some chemistry with dyes, and testing athletes‟ urine for banned drugs. Several of the club members are awaiting confirmation of their bronze CREST awards. The Salters‟ Chemistry Festival team this year is Ben Appleby, Tom Corran, Paul Gogerty and James Howe. The Year 9 Solar group has produced work on the fauna found on the School grounds and has piloted it with the Prep science clubs. The pupils involved are Sam Gavin-Pitt, Josh Gibson, Kyle Ho, Sam Johnson, Ben Lawrie, Owen Morris, James O‟Neill, Max Shah and Dom Smith. The Year 10 Solar group and invited guests attended the „Science Live‟ lectures in Manchester which included Professor Lord Robert Winston, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Professor Steve Jones. The pupils involved were Anas Ahmed, Sam Bowler, Patrick Doyle, Dominic Fowler-Williams, Daniel Formston, Harri Jones, Grace Keenan, Maro Kyriacou, Ece Mert, Nomia Navaratnarajah, Tommy Keenan, Zack Kirkman and Thomas Wood.

Extra-curricular Y7 Etiquette and public speaking: All Y7 pupils took part in an Etiquette and Public Speaking course as part of „Beyond the Curriculum‟. Recognising that the world is a very competitive place, this is designed to help them stand out from others who may be similarly well-qualified in academic terms. Business Club: Sixteen Sixth Form students took place in „The Bursar‟s Apprentice‟ competition, being challenged week by week to carry out a range of business tasks. The eventual winner was Jack Walker, who with runnersup Alex Ivory and Tom Betts attended the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Liverpool, to hear, amongst others, Lord Heseltine, Sir Richard Branson and Martha Lane-Fox. Combined Cadet Force: Alex Macaulay was appointed as the Mayor‟s Cadet Representative. Twenty cadets from the CCF attended the annual camp at Warcop Training Camp in Cumbria. In September, we sent a team to take part in the 42 nd (North West) Brigade Cadet Skill at Arms Meeting, a service rifle shooting competition open to cadets of the CCF and Army Cadet Force from across the North West. Our team finished fourth overall in the competition. A Field Day was held in October and cadets visited the Army Careers Exhibition at Altcar in Formby. The day included many adventurous, sporting and military activities, all geared towards giving a taste of Army life. All of our cadets turned out in November for the annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service in the Chapel. Eight students from Upton Hall and Birkenhead School attended the National Orienteering Championships. Otto Dawes, Paul Wynne, John Warburton and Alex Macaulay competed. Birkenhead School finished third overall in the competition. A number of range practices were held in January, February and March of this year. The shooting team has consisted of Alex Macaulay, Ben Pearson, Otto Dawes, Harrison Catherall, Patrick Doyle, Thomas Platt, Paul Wynne and John Warburton, as well as a number of students from Upton Hall School. The team will be going on to compete in the County of Lancaster Rifle Association to represent the School regionally, before heading to the National Shooting Centre Bisley for the National Schools‟ Meeting in July. A group of ten cadets attended a camp in April, working alongside cadets and staff from Oldham Hulme Grammar School. Over the Easter Break, the Headquarters Army Cadet Leadership Course took place at Nesscliff Training Camp in Shropshire. Alex Macaulay attended and successfully completed the course, gaining the award of a „GOOD‟ grade - the second highest achievable grade for the course. Eight cadets took part in a signals training cadre, run by our Signals Training Officer, Major John Langan. Jamall Bell, Callum Andrews, Ben Appleby, Otto Dawes and four cadets from Upton Hall School became the first cadre from the CCF to achieve the Cadet Radio User award in a number of years.

A number of Old Birkonians from the CCF have gone on to start careers in the British Army. Former students Matthew Swift and Thomas Lander have recently joined the Army. Matthew is currently undergoing his initial training and is looking to be a vehicle recovery technician in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), whilst Thomas has recently joined the Mercian Regiment as an infantry combat medical technician. Jonathan Lawrence entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in May 2011 and recently completed his commissioning course, entering the REME as a Second Lieutenant. The CCF‟s biennial inspection will be held on 26th September 2012. The building of an assault course on the School‟s Noctorum Field site is currently being planned and discussed. The project is supported by the Commanding Officer of 75 Engineer Regiment (Volunteers) of the Royal Engineers. Drama: In March the first production in the refurbished Bushell Hall was Peter Shaffer‟s „Black Comedyl, starring James Green (U6), Siân Round (Year 10), Tom Feeny (U6), Cameron Donaldson (U6), Gwilym Jones (U6) and Edward Sherrard (L6). There were guest appearances by Mr Hopkins, Mr Turner and the Headmaster. This was followed by J. M. Barrie's 'Peter Pan', which comprised a large cast of twenty nine (from Years 7 to 13) and was accompanied by a live original score composed by Luca Galvani. Many pupils also contributed behind the scenes, helping with make-up, lighting, stage management and properties. Duke of Edinburgh Award: Nineteen students signed up to do the Gold Award this September, together with 38 to do the Silver. This means that we are expecting to run three Gold qualifying expeditions at the end of the summer term and six Silver expeditions. This year all the practice expeditions took place in North Wales and the qualifying expeditions will be undertaken in the Lake District. The pupils have been getting to grips with the mapping and route planning computer programmes which come as part of the D of E package and which essentially digitalise what was once a paper exercise. This should appeal more to a generation used to doing much of their work on line Students continue to choose from a wide variety of options in the Volunteering, Skills and Physical Activities sections of the Award. Many do voluntary work in charity shops; others assist with uniformed organisations and children‟s nurseries. The many sports clubs on the Wirral ensure that there is never any shortage of options when it comes to choosing a physical activity and there are many more available in School. One of the candidates has been learning Chinese cookery for her skill, by working in a Chinese restaurant. Since September, one Gold award has been achieved and nine Silver, with one more awaiting processing. This reminds us that the challenge of the programme lies not only in completing the expeditions section, which nearly everyone does, but in finishing off the other sections, which requires individual initiative, time and effort.

Quizzes: Teams represented the School at both Junior and Senior Schools‟ Challenge events. The Junior team members were Ben Appleby, Georgia Delargy, Daniel Gaskell, Paul Keenan, Matthew MacDonald, Tom Parkes, Emily Pulford and Sebastian Wilkes, while the senior representatives were Ammar Ahmed, Daniel Formston, Sparsh Garg, James Green and Jonathan Welsh. Scouts: Participation and success in County and District events remains high. We competed in the Geoffrey Beavan Challenge (Hiking, Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Shooting and First Aid) in October, and took part in Winter Camp at Gilwell in January. February saw the Equinox Challenge, a combination of Orienteering and avoiding capture in Delamere Forest, where our very young team (five just up from Cubs) finished ninth out of 40 teams. As winners of last year‟s District Skills Competition we qualified for the County Lord Derby competition in March and finished 8th of 16 teams. The troop took part in the County event, Great Escape. They also took part in three district events, Scouting Skills, Large Scale Pioneering and Small Scale Pioneering achieving second place in each of the events. The following have represented the Troop throughout the year: Callum Andrews, Daniel Gaskell, Daniel Evans, Alex Forbes, Jordan Hayward, Shikhar Kumar, Will Blessing, Adam Durband, Alex Herod, Rohan Shenoy, Adam Dutton, Noah Lawrensen and Edward Tilleard. Unicycle Club: The Unicycle club has continued to see pupils taking on the challenge of mastering a demanding skill, needing balance, focus and perseverance. Regular members have been two sets of brothers - Stan and Jack Billington and Oliver and Edward George. They have been mastering their unicycle hockey skills in the matches that take place every Friday lunchtime in the Prep Gym. Ski Trip 2012: 36 pupils and 5 staff took part in another ski trip to Snowbasin, Utah and enjoyed good weather and excellent skiing conditions.. The pupils also took part in some typical American past times, such as watching an ice hockey game, shopping and eating! World Challenge Expedition 2010: Fifteen Sixth Form pupils will be spending a month of their summer holidays in Mongolia. The first part of the trip will be spent working in the Mongolian capital Ulaan Baatar with the Cristina Noble Foundation. The group will teach English, organise activities for the children who live there and help out around the camp. They will then travel to Lake Khövsgöl in the North of the country to embark upon a five day foot trek followed by a five day horse trek. During this time the group will be wild camping and cooking their own food on open fires. Following this will be a four day return journey to the capital by road and the TransMongolian railway. To finish the team will spend a few days in Beijing visiting the many sites and also the Great Wall. For the entire trip, the group will be in charge of everything including food, the budget, travel arrangements and navigation. As part of their preparation they have organised several successful fundraising activities including two discos and a Jazz Night which raised £1800. The World Challenge Team will be: U6: Rhiannon Frostick, Sam Good, James Kewin, Allan Lowey, Kyle Lowey and Curtis Wright. Sport Rugby: The 1st XV played 18 matches and won 11. Sam Corlett was top scorer with 123 points including 22 tries. Sam Corlett and Captain Oliver Hearn were selected for the English Independent School team. Sam also represented Cheshire Under 18‟s and was a North of England trialist. Joe Doyle was selected for the Cheshire Under 17‟s development squad and played for Irish Exiles. Michael Doneo was selected for Cheshire Under 18‟s. Jack Walker and Will Gollins were selected for the Cheshire Under 17 Development Squad. In the Sevens competitions the 1st VII were runners up in the plate at the Cheshire 7‟s, winners of the plate at the Stonyhurst 7‟s and made two other quarter-final appearances. Dominic Maddox and Patrick Doyle were both selected for Cheshire Under 15‟s Ben Unsworth, Dan Walker and Tom Cornall were selected for West Cheshire under 15‟s Owen Morris, George Kirkby, Tom Simpson, Will Brewster, Ben Corlett, Max Shah and Josh Gibson were all selected for West Cheshire Under 14‟s. Will Grabe, Gabriel Johnson-Aley, Tom Cottier, Oliver Green, Elliot Bainbridge and Aaron So were all selected for West Cheshire Under 13‟s. Boys Hockey: The 1st XI won the Wirral League Shield for the first time in 8 years, only dropping 5 points from 24 against all opposition. They also won 13 and drew 1 from the 18 matches they played this season. Top goal scorers were Matthew Rogers (16) and Andrew White (15). The 2nd XI had a mixed season, won 4 and drew 2 out of their14 matches. The Under 16‟s made progress throughout the season, winning their last three games comfortably, the final game being an 8-0 victory against Rydal Penrhos. The Under 14‟s won 2 games, drew six, and lost 2. The squad increased in size from 13 at the start to 25 at the end, with all involved getting an opportunity to represent the School. James O‟Neill (Captain), Edward George, Sam Gavin-Pitt and Kyle Ho were all selected play a game for the U16s. James O‟Neill, Harrison Catherall and Jack Redhead have been selected for England Hockey performance camps in the Summer holidays. Cricket: (All information correct at mid-June) The 1st XI toured Barbados in the summer of 2011 and won all 5 of their matches. Much of the domestic season was disrupted by weather with a large number of fixtures cancelled. The Under 12‟s and Under 13‟s were both undefeated at half term and the Under 12‟s are in the quarter final of the Cheshire Cup, whilst the Under 13‟s are in the semi final of their competition. The Under 14‟s only defeat was against Manchester Grammar School. Victories include a win against King‟s School, Chester. The Under 14‟s are in the quarter final of the Cheshire Cup. The Under 15‟s have had wins against King‟s School Chester, Cheadle Hulme School and Tarporley High School (Cheshire Cup). Athletics: (All information correct at mid-June) The following finished in the top three at the Wirral Schools Championships and may be selected to represent Wirral in the Merseyside Schools Athletics Championships: Annie Mills – 800m Millie James - 1500m Alice Sherrard – shot putt & discus Annabel Saverimutto – 100m India Wild - hurdles Tom Simpson – 800m Owen Morris – 200m Elliott Kirkbride-Wright – javelin Ben Corlett - hurdles Tom Cornall – 200m Harrison Catherall – 800m Dominic Maddox – long jump In the Sainsbury‟s Track & Field Cup both the intermediate boys (Year 9 & 10) finished runners up in the first round, while the junior boys (Year 7 & 8) came third. The intermediate girls, made up of mostly Year 9‟s, were placed sixth from seven while the junior girls were fourth out of the seven teams taking part. In the Wirral Trophy meeting, in which seven schools take part, the Year 8 girls were fifth, and the Year 10 girls were sixth. The Year 10 boys were third as were the Year 8 boys, both teams producing some outstanding performances. In the Year 7 Wirral Trials, those chosen to represent Wirral in the Merseyside Schools Athletics Championships were: Jack Pritchard – shot putt Jessica Pulford – shot putt Phoebe James – 800m Netball: The 1st VII toured Barbados in the summer of 2011, winning six out of the eight matches they played. Player of the tour was Phyllida Frostick. Back in the UK they won four out of their six matches within the season, enjoying victories over local rivals King‟s, Chester, and Liverpool College. The U15‟s, with the loss of their goal shooter who moved back to Germany, managed only two victories in the season. The U14‟s won all but two fixtures and qualified as one of the top two schools in the Wirral for the county finals. The U13‟s almost emulated last year‟s season and came third in the county netball finals. They also won all of their normal seasonal fixtures. The U12‟s in their first season won four out of seven fixtures. At the county finals they came third in the county. Victories included an 8-0 win over Birkenhead High Academy. Girls Hockey: The U14‟s participated in the national and county tournaments. They won the preliminary round of the county tournament, beating the Grange and Queen‟s Chester to qualify as one of the top four schools for the county finals. On the day, a draw, a win and a loss placed them third in the county. They also won all of their domestic fixtures in the season. The U13‟s participated in the National Schools‟ tournament but failed to qualify for the next round after a win over the Grange, but two losses in their group didn‟t give them enough points. They finished their season with a 10-0 win over Wirral Grammar School for Girls and a 3-1 win over Westholme School. The U12‟s season was affected by weather and only a few fixtures were played. One win, two draws and two losses was the sum total of their season. Lacrosse: The 1st XII‟s injury plagued season ended up with one win over Moreton Hall, a draw with Bolton school and a loss to Withington Girls‟ school. The U14‟s remain undefeated all season with eight wins out of eight. They also clinched a second successive North of England Championship title. It came down to a golden goal in the final against Queen Margaret‟s to seal it. The U13‟s, with some help from a number of U12‟s, won all three of their domestic matches against local rivals, such as Queen‟s, Chester and Withington. They too went to the North England finals and, after winning their group convincingly, lost to Harrogate Ladies College in the semi-final. Rounders and Tennis: (All information correct at mid-June) A combined U15/14 rounders team lost their opening game of the season, but then went on to beat Kingsmead and a number of other schools in the Wirral tournament, where they were placed 5 th overall. The U13‟s won all of their domestic matches, including a 20-10 victory over King‟s School, Chester. They reached the final of the Wirral tournament after beating five local schools, but lost by one rounder to Wirral Grammar School. They finished as runners up. The U12‟s mirrored the U13‟s season, winning all of their domestic matches and beating six local schools in the Wirral tournament. But they also lost in the final to Wirral Grammar and so finished runners up. A short tennis season saw only the U12‟s & U13‟s play. They managed one win, one draw and two losses between them. Golf: This year the School reached the Northern Semi Final of the ISGA singles losing to Birkdale School, Sheffield the eventual winners, and the Northern Semi Final of the HMC Foursomes where they lost also to the eventual winners Loretto School, Edinburgh.

Houses Beresford: Luca Galvani composed music for the School production of “Peter Pan”. Marco Galvani gained distinction in his Grade 8 (ABRSM) piano and singing exams, merit in his Grade 7 (ABRSM) theory exam, and has had compositions performed at the Royal Northern College of Music, as well as in the School Chapel and at the Williamson Art Gallery. Sam Gavin-Pitt gained his PADI card for scuba diving in open water. Alice Gollins plays lacrosse for Wirral and won the „player of the year‟ award. Frederick Gollins gained distinction in his Grade 2 music exam (drums). Alice Hancock captained the Cheshire U18 B team in lacrosse. Jordan Hayward is a member of a street dance team which came first in the North West competition. Millie James plays lacrosse for Cheshire U15 A team, as well as for Wirral U14, U16 and Ladies‟ teams. Jamie Johnson achieved his black belt in Tai Kwon-Do and reached Stage 4 in Windsurfing. Eleanor Lloyd has been awarded her grade 3 in ballet and tap-dancing examinations. Alice Sherrard was selected for a North West hockey tournament. Edward Sherrard spent three weeks in Uganda doing voluntary work with the Rock of Joy Trust. Georgina Sudderick plays golf for the Cheshire junior squad. Leo Westbrook was selected for the British trampolining team. Bidston: Joshua Black represented Northern Independent Schools Football and Merseyside Under 18‟s. Georgia Delargy swims for Hoylake ASC, where she has qualified for county level galas. She also made the Liverpool and District Championship squad. Paul Gogerty represents Wirral at Judo. Eleanor Hilton was a cheerleader for the Liverpool Marathon and appeared in three productions at the Gladstone Theatre - Carousel, Sleeping Beauty and The Sound of Music. Robert Hilton represented City of Liverpool at the National swimming championships and won the 100m backstroke. He also performed in The Sound of Music and the pantomime at the Gladstone Theatre. Kyle Ho represents Cheshire at Badminton. Allan Lowey gained a certificate of achievement for Archery. Jack Redhead played hockey for Neston in the National finals. John Warburton represented the school in the National Orienteering Competition. He was also promoted to Lance Corporal. Ashley Williams was a member of the Northern Independent Schools football squad. Kingsmead: Paul Keenan is in the Cheshire District cricket team. Christopher Lansdown performed in the Wirral Music Festival and achieved 1 st place with his brass band. Nicholas Morgan represented the County with his swimming team. Marcus Ronayne-Sambucci swims with Wirral Metro and has won various medals. Shrewsbury: Edward Azurdia represented the school in the Times Bee Spelling Competition. Imogen Collins has achieved her LAMDA bronze certificate. Nathan Demetrios represented the North of England Independent Schools U18s at football. Matthew Dixon represented Merseyside in the Northern Athletics Championships. Charlotte Dowling has achieved Grade 4 ballet. Adrian Dyu won as part of a duet on piano at the Wirral Music Festival. Rebecca Goodall has passed Grade 7 ballet. Andrew Hoyland is now a Level 7 football referee. Gabriel Jones achieved LAMDA Grade 8 with merit. Shikhar Kumar was awarded Grade 2 distinction for Drama. He also represented the school in the Times Bee Spelling Competition. Matthew Oulton played Chess at county level. Andrew Sherman has passed red, yellow and orange belts in Aikido. Jack Smith was awarded Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Old Birkonians Jonathan Lawrence passed out from Sandhurst Military Academy in April 2012 and he has joined the Royal Engineers. Rufus Foster (2008) left School to study Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Manchester. He graduated with a Masters in Engineering and gained a first, achieving also the top mark in his course. He was also elected as a finalist in a national competition, across British universities, organized by Tata Steel, to design a high speed rail bridge. He will now be taking up an appointment as a bridge engineer with Mott MacDonald.
