Whiskies Galore

A Tour of Scotland's Island Distilleries Island whiskies have long held a fascination and a powerful emotional draw on whisky drinkers the world over. Their special combination of heritage, mystique, and remote location captures the imagination; their highly distinctive flavours are often imitated but seldom bettered. There have been few books on island whisky and none written in recent years.

Ian Buxton has been working in and around the whisky industry for close to 30 years, but has been drinking professionally for a good deal longer. He began writing regularly for Whisky Magazine shortly after it launched, and now also writes in a variety of trade and consumer titles here and abroad. He has published a number of books, including the bestselling 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die.

But Whiskies Galore is not your average whisky book. It is not merely a catalogue of distilleries, but a story of discovery and adventure. Join Ian Buxton on a personal journey across Scotland’s islands, where he learns to fish with high explosives, ends up hurling his dinner into the sea, and comes face to face with a basking shark. Combining an expert’s knowledge of whisky with a travel writer’s fondness for anecdote, and with a keen description of place, he provides a special treat for all who love the islands’ magical drams.

Iain Fraser & Anne Fraser Sim

AU G U S T 2 0 1 7

A Sketchbook of Edinburgh After twenty years working in the shipping industry in Asia and America, Iain Fraser returned home in 1994 to establish The Elephant House, a café-restaurant in the Old Town famed for its connection with a certain fictional boy wizard. Anne Fraser is Awards Manager at The Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s National Academy of Science and the Arts. Her role includes supporting young entrepreneurs aspiring to turn clever hi-tech ideas into successful businesses.

In this evocative book Iain and Anne Fraser take the reader, both visitor and resident, on a personal journey through the centre of one of the world’s most unforgettable cities. Working with four talented local artists (Irina, Cat, Keli and Catherine) they reflect the character and cultural history of Edinburgh through 80 pages and 150 beautiful and original illustrations. Their narrative describes the split personality of Scotland’s capital city, from the subdued sophistication of a ‘dreich’ February day to the flouncy and frivolous fun of the summer festival season. The dramatic character of Edinburgh and its history are world renowned. The authors highlight their favourite parts of the city centre and include a series of quirky stories discovered during their research gleaned from some of the many books written about the city.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Scotland's Secret History

The Illicit Distilling and Smuggling of Whisky Illicit distilling in Scotland was seen as a ‘right of man’ at the end of the 17th century. Attempts to enforce excise duty on the spirit were therefore met with resistance, ranging from riots to more and more ingenious ways of avoiding paying tax.

Charles MacLean is a world authority on whisky and has written over 35 books on the subject, including the bestselling Whiskypedia. In 2009 he was elected Keeper of the Quaich, the whisky industry’s highest accolade.

In this book Charles MacLean and Daniel MacCannell give a fascinating insight into the day-to-day struggles that led to the increase in illicit distilling from the mid-1600s, then to its eventual demise in the early 20th century. The Cabrach, a wild and sparsely populated part of Aberdeenshire, became renowned for its production of illicit whisky. Local inhabitants mixed farming and distilling with great skill, creating a network of stills and distribution to evade customs. Using new research, first-hand historical accounts and official records, the authors show how spirits from this small parish were made and travelled far and wide, across the border to England and across the North Sea to France, firing up revolution and lending solidarity to the struggles of the Jacobites.

Terry J. Williams

SEPTEMBER 2017

Walking With Cattle In Search of the Last Drovers of Uist

Terry J. Williams is a farmer’s daughter who was brought up in Cumbria and has lived in Scotland for many years. She was a crofter on Skye for 10 years, and has also worked as a freelance photographer and writer. Her book Ten Out Of Ten was published in 2010 to celebrate the first ten years of Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd in Plockton.

Droving was once the lifeblood of Scotland’s rural economy, and for centuries Scotland’s glens and mountain passes were alive with thousands of cattle making their way to the market trysts of Crieff and Falkirk. With the Industrial Revolution, ships, railways and eventually lorries took over the drovers’ trade, and by the early twentieth century, the age-old droving tradition was all but dead. Except, however, in the Western Isles, where droving on foot continued until the mid-1960s, when the MacBraynes introduced a new generation of ferries capable of bringing livestock lorries to the islands. In this book, Terry J. Williams follows the route of the drovers and their cattle from the Outer Hebrides to the Highland marts. Travelling by campervan and armed with a voice recorder, a collection of archive photographs and a set of maps marked with the old market stances, she seeks out the last surviving drovers. The resulting narrative is an extraordinary insight into a lost world, told through the voices of the few remaining individuals who remember the days of walking with cattle.

Alistair Moffat

SEPTEMBER 2017

Scotland: A History From Earliest Times From the Ice Age to the recent Scottish Referendum, historian and author Alistair Moffat explores the history of the Scottish nation. As well as focusing on key moments in the nation’s history such as the Battle of Bannockburn and the Jacobite Risings, Moffat also features other episodes in history that are perhaps less well documented.

Alistair Moffat is a former Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Director of Programmes at Scottish Television. He now runs the Borders and Lennoxlove book festivals and is currently Rector of St Andrews University. He has written numerous books, including The Faded Map, The Sea Kingdoms, The Borders and Arthur and The Lost Kingdoms, all of which are published by Birlinn.

From prehistoric timber halls to inventions and literature, Moffat’s tale explores the drama of battle, change, loss and invention interspersed with the lives of ordinary Scottish folk, the men and women who defined a nation.

‘[T]his is a very readable, wellresearched and fluent account’ – Scotland on Sunday ‘Moffat plunders the facts and fables to create a richly-detailed and comprehensive analysis of a nation’s past and references a huge number of sources’ – Scotland Magazine ‘The great thing about Moffat’s account is that, for all its emphasis on uncertainty, it rattles along with complete narrative certainty, to the extent that great events consistently take even a historically literate reader unawares’ – Scottish Review of Books

The Book of Bere

Orkney's Ancient Grain Bere is the native barley of Orkney. In the past it was an important multi-use crop and a staple of the Scottish diet, though its use declined as more easilyprocessed crops were introduced. Bere is still grown on Orkney farms by an agricultural contractor employed by the Birsay Heritage Trust who run the Barony Mill, Orkney’s last operating water mill. Here the grain is milled into beremeal, a cream-coloured flour with a distinctive, earthy, nutty flavour.

Liz Ashworth is a food writer and food product developer with a particular interest in using local produce. The author of a pioneering series of cookery books for beginners of all ages, she writes food columns in various publications, and coordinates the food programme in the annual Orkney International Science Festival. She is also the author of The Chain Bridge Honey Bible and The William Shearer Tattie Bible.

In this book acclaimed food writer Liz Ashworth traces the story of bere from its Neolithic origins to the present day, providing useful culinary tips and recipes on how this ancient grain can be introduced to the modern kitchen for enjoyment. Recipes are included for Breads, Scones, Tea Breads, Cakes, Tray Bakes, Puddings, Pastry Dishes, and Sweet and Savoury Biscuits. Evan Mawdsley

SEPTEMBER 2017

The Russian Civil War New Edition Evan Mawdsley is Professor of History at Glasgow University. He has written numerous books and articles on Russian history and is the co-author of The Soviet Elite from Lenin to Gorbachev. He lives in Glasgow.

The Russian Civil War of 1917-1920, out of which the Soviet Union was born, was one of the most significant events of the twentieth century. The collapse of the Tsarist regime and the failure of the Kerensky Provisional Government nearly led to the complete disintegration of the Russian state. This book, however, is not simply the story of that collapse and the rebellion that accompanied it, but of the painful and costly reconstruction of Russian power under a Soviet regime. Evan Mawdsley’s lucid account of this vast and complex subject explains in detail the power struggles and political manoeuvres of the war, providing a balanced analysis of why the Communists were victors. This edition includes illustrations, high quality maps and a new introduction to mark the centenary of the Russian Civil War.

Angus Roxburgh

OCTOBER 2017

Moscow Calling Memoirs of a Foreign Correspondent In the course of the past 45 years, Angus Roxburgh has translated Tolstoy, met three successive Russian presidents and been jinxed by a Siberian shaman. He has come under fire in war zones and been arrested by Chechen thugs. He was wooed by the KGB, who then decided he would make a lousy spy and expelled him from the country.

Angus Roxburgh studied Russian and German at Aberdeen University. A distinguished journalist and broadcaster, he was Sunday Times Moscow correspondent (1987-89), BBC Moscow correspondent (1991-97) and BBC Europe correspondent (1998-2005). From 2006-2009 he was media consultant to the Kremlin, and is now a freelance writer and journalist. He is the author of the acclaimed The Strongman: Vladimir Putin and the Struggle for Russia and was consultant on the award-winning BBC documentaries, The Second Russian Revolution, and Putin, Russia and the West.

In Moscow Calling Roxburgh presents his Russia – not the Russia of news reports, but a quirky, crazy, exasperating, beautiful, tumultuous world that in forty years has changed completely, and yet not at all. From the dark, fearful days of communism and his adventures as a correspondent as the Soviet Union collapsed into chaos, to his frustrating work as a media consultant in Putin’s Kremlin, this is a unique, fascinating and often hilarious insight into a country that today, more than ever, is of global political significance.

The Course of History Great Meals that Changed the World

Struan Stevenson served three terms as a Member of the European Parliament for Scotland from 1999 to 2014. He is an award-winning author, lecturer, newspaper feature writer and broadcaster. Tony Singh MBE is an acclaimed chef and restaurateur. He is the author of several recipe books and has featured on many television cookery shows.

Many decisions which have had enormous historical consequences have been made over the dinner table, and have been accompanied (and perhaps influenced) by copious amounts of food and wine. In this book Struan Stevenson brings to life ten such moments, exploring the personalities, the issues and of course the food which helped shape the course of history. From 16 April 1746, the Eve of the Battle of Culloden, which destroyed Bonnie Prince Charlie’s hope of a Stuart restoration forever, to 26 March 1979, Washington DC, when, against all odds, President Jimmy Carter brokered a peace deal between Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli PM Menachem Begin, this book is a unique and fascinating window into the history of the world. Maps can delight, educate and illuminate a nation’s history and geography. Where written documents are obvious resources in helping shape views of the past, maps powerfully illustrate how and why nations have come to be seen as they are. Scotland: Mapping the Nation is the first book to take Scotland’s maps seriously as a form of Scottish history, from the earliest representations of Scotland by Ptolemy in the second century AD to the most recent mapping and geographical representation in GIS, satellite imagery and SATNAV. Written by experts who have spent their lives working with maps and map history, Scotland: Mapping the Nation offers a fascinating and thought-provoking perspective on Scottish history and geography. The book, produced in association with the National Library of Scotland, is beautifully illustrated with details of the most significant manuscript and printed maps of Scotland including those by Timothy Pont, Joan Blaeu, William Roy and the Bartholomew firm amongst many others.

Walter Reid

OCTOBER 2017

Five Days From Defeat How Britain Nearly Lost the First World War On 21 March 1918 Germany initiated one of the most ferocious offensives of the First World War. During the socalled Kaiserschlacht, German troops advanced on allied positions in a series of ferocious attacks which caused massive casualties, separated British and French forces and drove the British back towards the Channel ports.

Walter Reid is the author of a number of acclaimed works on military and political history, with a focus on British imperial policy. He was educated at the universities of Oxford and Edinburgh. In tandem with his career as an historian, he and his wife farm in Argyll and grow olives in France.

A week later one of the most dramatic summits of the war took place in Doullens. The outcome was to have extraordinary consequences. Within a few months a policy of defence became one of offence, and paved the way for British success at Amiens and the series of unbroken British victories that led Germany to plead for armistice. Victory in November 1918 was a matter for celebration; what was excised from history was how close Britain was to ignominious defeat just eight months earlier. Walter Reid retells this extraordinary story, based on newly discovered archive material which shatters many preconceptions about one of Britain’s greatest military heroes – Douglas Haig.

John Moore

OCTOBER 2017

The Clyde Mapping the River John Moore is a specialist on Scottish cartography and has published widely on the subject over a period of many years. He is currently Collections Manager at Glasgow University. He is the author of Glasgow: Mapping the City.

Previous Key Title GLASGOW: MAPPING THE CITY ISBN: 9781780273198 Price: £30.00 Hardback

The Clyde is arguably the most evocative of Scottish rivers. Its mention conjures up a variety of images of power, productivity and pleasure from its ‘bonnie banks’ through the orchards of south Lanarkshire to its association with shipbuilding and trade and the holiday memories of thousands who fondly remember going ‘doon the watter’. Its story reflects much of the history of the lands it flows through and the people who live on its banks. This book looks at the maps which display the river itself from its source to the wide estuary which is as much a part of the whole image. It discusses how the river was mapped from its earliest depictions and includes such topics as navigation, river crossings, war and defence, tourism, sport and recreation, industry and power and urban development.

Jenny Wormald Foreword & Afterword by Anna Groundwater

AU G U S T 2 0 1 7

Mary, Queen of Scots A Study in Failure Jenny Wormald was one of the most influential Scottish historians of her generation. After retirement to Edinburgh she became an Honorary Fellow in Scottish History at the University of Edinburgh and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. She wrote a number of significant books and articles, including Court, Kirk and Community: Scotland 1470–1625 (1981), ‘James VI and I: Two Kings or One?’ (1983) and ‘Gunpowder, Treason and Scots’ (1985).

Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, has long been portrayed as one of history’s romantically tragic figures. Devious, naïve, beautiful and sexually voracious, often highly principled, she secured the Scottish throne and bolstered the position of the Catholic Church in Scotland. Her plotting, including probable involvement in the murder of her husband Lord Darnley, led to her flight from Scotland and imprisonment by her equally ambitious cousin and fellow queen, Elizabeth of England. Yet when Elizabeth ordered Mary’s execution in 1587 it was an act of exasperated frustration rather than political wrath. Unlike biographies of Mary predating this work, this masterly study set out to show Mary as she really was – not a romantic heroine, but the ruler of a European kingdom with far greater economic and political importance than its size or location would indicate. Her extraordinary story has become one of the most colourful and emotionally searing tales of western history, and it is here fully reconsidered by a leading specialist of the period. Jenny Wormald’s beautifully written biography will appeal to students and general readers alike.
