The Snowflake is based on the timeless Christmas story by Benji Davies. This production has been adapted and directed by Matt Aston.
The Snowflake tells the tale of a snowflake, a little girl and her Pappie – all longing for their own special place in the world. The performance will run for approximately 45 minutes with no interval. This show is recommended for children aged 3 - 6 and their families.
This show contains light up puppets and some moments of bright light. When you see the light symbol in the Visual Storyboard section, the scene contains strong lighting.
This show contains music, singing and dancing. When you see a bell symbol, the scene might contain some loud noises.
You are invited to bring your ear defenders, dark glasses or anything else that might help you enjoy the show. Speak to our Front of House Staff if you’d like to borrow some ear defenders or dark glasses.

Layla Mehay-Bennett plays Noelle
Fozzie, the dog
Fozzie is a puppet dog (but a very real member of the family!)
Layla only plays one character. But you’ll see that Heidi plays both Mum and Pappie. To show the difference, Heidi will change the way she moves and uses her voice, as well as changing her costume.
This Relaxed Performance will be a more informal performance environment.
This means that:
Some sound and lighting levels will be reduced.
The houselights will remain on at a low level.
Auditorium doors will remain open to allow free flow in or out of the auditorium. You’re welcome to leave and return at any time.
Our front of house staff will show you where everything is and help if you have any questions
A chill-out space is available for you to use at any time during your visit, ask a member of staff and they can take you there.
The show opens with Noelle and Mum singing a song together with gentle piano music.
We meet Fozzie, the family dog, who is a puppet that is controlled by the performers. He is very friendly and will stay within the stage area.
Noelle is trying to write a Christmassy poem for her homework, but her Mum keeps interrupting.
Noelle looks through a Christmas box for some ideas. She uses a dictionary to look up the word ‘snowflake’.
(If you would like to look up any words used in the show, head to our Glossary at the back of this pack)
We are introduced to Pappie, Noelle’s Grandfather.
Mum transforms into Pappie on stage whilst singing a song with Noelle. Fozzie is very naughty and runs around the stage.
Pappie picks Noelle up from school. Noelle and Pappie eat fish and chips together on their favourite bench.
Pappie tells Noelle a story about a snowflake who is getting ready to fall from the sky.
During the story, Noelle controls a snowflake puppet and Pappie controls a big cloud puppet.
Both puppets light up and the actors change their voices to sound like different characters.
The snowflake is enjoying herself floating around until she begins to feel nervous about falling because she’s never done it before.
The snowflake drifts over valleys, streams and the wind keeps whisking them away.
Whilst Pappie tells his story, Noelle sees a beautiful Christmas tree in a shop window. She feels sad as they can’t have a tree because Fozzie would knock it over.
Pappie promises that they’ll train Fozzie, so they can have a big tree for next year.
Pappie continues telling the story. The snowflake is joined by lots of other snowflakes – the actors are holding snowflake puppets and they are all very happy. A disco ball lights up during this scene.
Pappie ends the story so they can get home.
Noelle spots a branch in the park and takes it home to put decorations on.
Whilst Noelle decorates her little tree at home, her Mum tells her something very exciting.
She has asked Pappie to live with them, if Noelle would like that too. Mum feels Pappie might need some persuading as he doesn’t want to cause any fuss.
Noelle puts her Christmas tree on the windowsill outside so Fozzie can’t knock it over.
She goes to bed very excited. Noelle has lovely dreams about snowflakes, Christmas and her family.
A disco ball lights up during this scene.
Pappie wakes Noelle in the morning to ask if it’s okay for him and Fozzie to move in.
Noelle says she would love them to live with them, but there is one condition.... Pappie has to finish his story about the snowflake!
Pappie continues telling the story using the cloud puppet, and Noelle with the snowflake puppet.
Noelle notices that the snowflake did find a place to land… on her Christmas tree!
Noelle and Pappie dance together. Noelle tells Pappie that she has finished the poem that she has been writing in her head. She performs her poem which is all about the snowflake searching for a place to land.
The show has now finished and the actors take a bow. Even Fozzie and the snowflake bow!
The audience might clap and cheer. The actors sing a final song before leaving the stage and the audience may clap along with the music.
