I

t’s great to be back to open our new season of gigs at Eastside Jazz Club. We have already become well known amongst promoters, agents and artists, now fielding a wide range of exciting propositions from the best of the best in contemporary jazz. The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz department features heavily, with student gigs in both support and headline features, with staff also appearing as leaders and sidemen while we capitalise on major artist visits with masterclasses.

New to the format is the free space given to leading students to produce their own nights. I’m sure this will give us all new angles on where the scene might be heading in the future.

TIM BERNE & MATT MITCHELL 6.30pm Guest artists with Ensemble 1 7.45pm Guest artists with Ensemble 2 9pm Guest artists feature

Highlights for me will be Tim Berne and Matt Mitchell’s three set gig, rounding off a three-day artist in residence partnership, and the legendary Jerry Bergonzi in our midst with a seriously swinging rhythm section. Two guitar highlights to watch are the Gilad Hekselman and Phil Robson dates. Gilad returns for an exclusive solo feature after his sell-out night last year, and Phil brings with him drum luminary, Clarence Penn, and New York tenor sax, Jed Levy.

The Pablo Held Trio are one of the most lively and significant groups on the contemporary European jazz scene. Featuring pianist Pablo Held and his long standing trio of bassist, Robert Landfermann, and drummer, Jonas Burgwinkel, the group embrace the risk of radical spontaneity. This cohesion is based on friendship and on the creative desire to constantly enter unknown territories, and for this concert they are joined by outstanding UK jazz musician, Percy Pursglove, on trumpet.
