ridging jazz fans from 2019 into 2020, herewith our latest offering of incredible listening experiences at Eastside Jazz Club. In December we hope you join us for our Christmas “Knees-Up” which by now has to include Ellington’s Nutcracker and the Afro-Cuban band. Also watch out for a new theme, African Tour, featuring our own Township Band and special guest Tony Dudu. We are also delighted to start to open up the Monday Big Band nights to the community as the famous Birmingham Jazz Orchestra takes up its residency with us on Mon 9 Dec.

GRADUATE DOUBLE-BILL: TOM NIBLOCK QUARTET AND THE DAVE FERRIS / CHRIS YOUNG QUINTET 6.30pm Support 7.45pm Set 1 9pm Set 2 £15 (£12)

In the New Year, amidst Student Presents nights and new Jazz Canon themes, master trombonist John Fedchock appears as guest artist working with our students, and Mike Williams returns for a quartet appearance.

At Eastside Jazz Club we like to present all the staging posts of the musical journey for improvisers, from the novice to the master. All levels can be equally inspiring and particularly that of our recent graduates. Tonight, well on their way and already reaching great heights, we have two superb examples of the music created by jazz musicians in early career stage. Niblock, Ferris and Young lead excellent bands of the new generation.

Jazz music is inherently about inclusion, celebrating diversity and curiosity of other cultures and this is epitomised by one of our last dates in January with Tom Bancroft’s In Common that links British folk traditions with Indian music and jazz. But perhaps the most significant new offering from Eastside Jazz Club is the Paul Dunmall Invites series that promotes a world class artist from our area as well as the burgeoning professional jazz scene of our great city. JOHN FEDCHOCK: ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE

Eastside Jazz Club is delighted to host this brand-new series of monthly concerts from one of the most exciting and innovative performers in jazz today. Tony DudleyEvans says “Paul Dunmall is quite simply one of the finest improvising saxophonists in the world. He has a rare ability to create totally original improvisations whatever the context, and this ability arises from a serious concern for the music and a keen ear for what is happening around in any musical situation.” Paul approached Eastside Jazz Club and the Conservatoire with a proposition of a regular night in which he would invite guests from the broad range of his musical experience to perform spontaneously improvised sets. We are pleased to reciprocate and help to make this contribution to cultural life in Birmingham. A collaboration with TDE Promotions.
