Joo Yeon Sir violin Poulenc Sonata for Violin and Piano FP 119 Stravinsky Divertimento after ballet ‘Fairy’s Kiss’ for Violin and Piano Vladigerov Bulgarian Rhapsody ‘Vardar’ Described by Strad Magazine as ‘exuberant... seductive... with bravura and oodles of personality’ Korean-born British violinist Joo Yeon Sir studied at the Purcell School of Music and the Royal College of Music, where she studied with Dr Felix Andrievsky. She is a former winner of the Royal College of Music’s President’s Award and the prestigious Arts Club Karl Jenkins Classical Music Award (in association with Classic FM).

3.30pm Workshop 2 £5 Pierre Boulez’s creative output has usually been studied from a music analytical perspective in the context of serialism, but here, Dr Caroline Potter contends that the French literary and broader intellectual context was ultimately at least as important to the composer. While Boulez’s extensive published writings rarely mention surrealism, Dr Potter argues that surrealist writings and concepts had a crucial impact on his music in his formative years (1945-8).

Elliot’s The Waste Land remains one of the most influential poems of the last century. The poem is a crowded thoroughfare of competing voices, each jostling for attention. In this, the first of our new VoxBox series, we explore the essential role that music plays in this at times barren, at times deafening landscape.

Then Spoke The Thunder is inspired by ‘Journeys with ‘The Waste Land’’, an exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, 15 Sep – 18 Nov 2018. SIGN UP TO OUR MAILING LIST AT WWW.BCU.AC.UK/CONSERVATOIRE

PUBLIC RESEARCH SEMINAR DOUBLE BILL 3.30pm Workshop 2 £5 Dr Paul Norman (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire): Finding a Place for Bob and Cynthia Dr Andy Ingamells (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire): Reading, character and playing Finding a Place for Bob and Cynthia

Reading, character and playing

By appropriating the structure of one of his own short video works Bob and Cynthia, Paul Norman will highlight the potential of producing artistic works, and reflecting upon them, as a critical and robust method for artistic research.

Don’t read this, it’s not for you. Do you want to risk being bored? Well, OK then. Compositional rules excite me because they generate actions in which sounds may occur. Your presence is required for music. If you’re not here then you’ve missed out, so I won’t describe what happens. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of other things to listen to, although it’s better to make a piece than to perform, to perform than to listen, to listen than to hear.

This presentation will comprise spoken/written text, video and live performative actions though which Paul will embody the compositional approach as a ‘lecture performance’.

It examines pivotal events in 17981800 (the publication of Niemetschek’s biography of Mozart, the beginning of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, the first performances of The Creation), compares the fates of the Requiem and Creation (1800-1810), and evaluates nascent biographical trends for Haydn in relation to those already established for Mozart.

Ferneyhough’s music is renowned for its interwoven lines and it hums with activity. In Dum Transisset I-IV we hear the composer’s tribute to Christopher Tye, a sixteenthcentury composer and organist; La Chute d’Icare conjures Icarus’s stunning achievement of flight, thwarted by his hubris; and Funérailles reflects on pianist and composer Franz Liszt’s work of the same name written over a century earlier. The second half of this concert features a brand new songcycle from composer Emily Levy and writer Rommi Smith, The Rain is Coming, a response from a female perspective to Schubert’s Die schöne Mullerin. These new songs expand themes raised in the original work, adding a contemporary interpretation to the story. This unique mini song-cycle for voice and piano crosses both genre and artistic divides and offers a new perspective on Schubert’s iconic work.

‘Roderick Williams is a national treasure. Acutely responsive to the sound and meaning of words, his approach to the English Romantic song repertoire is revelatory. Susie Allan lingers tellingly over an important detail in the piano writing just at the right moment to complement Williams’ exquisite interpretation.’ BBC Music Magazine

Elgar dedicated his famous work ‘to my friends pictured within’, with each variation a musical sketch of a close acquaintance including his wife Alice, his publisher and indeed Elgar himself. The ‘enigma’ of a hidden melody is a puzzle which continues to generate much speculation. This Repertoire Orchestra concert opens with two concertos for instruments lesser-heard as soloists with orchestras, here tonight performed by musicians from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s Advanced Postgraduate Diploma course.
