Errollyn Wallen and Ensemble X
“We don’t break down barriers in music... we don’t see any” Three men starving on a life raft employ a hilariously logical application of democratic and bureaucratic procedures to determine which one of them is to become dinner for the other two.
Ivor Novello Award-winning composer-pianist Errollyn Wallen and her string quintet present a concert of her critically acclaimed works, plus pieces by special guests including Joe Cutler and Jeremy Peyton Jones.
The music and libretto based on Sławomir Mrożek’s absurdist play, Out at Sea is written by, composer Blanka Barbara Stachelek.
This performance precedes the release of PHOTOGRAPHY, a new album of Errollyn’s orchestral works, available on NMC.
Out at Sea gathers some of Birmingham’s most creative artists to highlight burning issues in our society, in a modern opera context. Please note that entry to this show is not included in the Frontiers Festival pass and is not free to BCU staff and students. © Hugo Glendinning

This piano duet is influenced by Béla Bartók’s piano works. There are four continuously performed movements drawing upon elements taken from Chinese folk music. Considering the two pianos as two ballet dancers, composer Fang Fang explores music derived from rural regions of China.

Hear three very exciting and contrasting works for brass dectet and percussion. Opener Icebreaker, by young Scottish composer Tom Harrold, will raise the roof of the Adrian Boult Hall followed by Masque, composed by Head of Brass Chris Houlding, loosely based on themes from Purcell’s Dioclesian. To conclude, experience Mark Anthony Turnage’s iconic Set To, a Bacchanal written for London Brass in 1992.

Edmund Hunt The Difference Between Us Three people, from three different communities, speaking three different languages, find themselves caught up in a war in which their lives become inextricably linked. When the conflict is over, they must find a way to cope with the trauma of war. As they contemplate their situation, they are each moved to speak to one another in their mother tongue; words that cannot be understood by the person to whom they are addressed. This opera uses text in modern English, with poetry in Old Irish, early Welsh and Old English, relating to events between 500 - 700 AD.

ADRIAN BOULT HALL IST KAPUTT; BY BRASS 4.40pm
The daily practice routine of a string and a woodwind quartet, respectively exploring possible combinations of C and G Lydian scale notes, is abruptly interrupted by the unexpected appearance of an uncommon instrument, destabilising the previous established balance.
Composer Paul Norman Featuring four brass choirs from the Conservatoire Trumpet choir Trombone choir French horn choir Tuba/Euphonium choir
Sound of the stone is like a magnetic field and the quartets’ compass needle suddenly goes mad. A new ‘North’ prevails and both quartets are slowly and irreversibly attracted by the stones’ ancestral recall.

The Adrian Boult Hall is scheduled for demolition in Summer 2016. Here we give it a worthy send off and shake it down ahead of time using the resonant frequencies of the hall, played by the four brass choirs of Birmingham Conservatoire.

Treading Water is an interdisciplinary collaboration in music, movement and visual art curated by local composer Anna Palmer. Please note that entry to this show is not included in the Frontiers Festival pass and is not free to BCU staff and students. Pianist and composer Hans Koller draws together the worlds of contemporary classical and jazz for the première of his new Jazzlines commission written for an ensemble combining his stunning jazz quartet with six virtuosic players from Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.
Twelve Re-inventions for George Russell combines two theories from two different traditions, realising Koller’s developments in the use of George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Theory supported by an approach developed by saxophonist John O’Gallagher, for the use of Twelve-tone theory and the music of Webern in improvisational music.
‘I couldn’t believe how his music could be so intensely chromatic, and at the same time so groovy... Russell has a great way of making a whole bunch of wrong notes sound wonderful… only when I viewed Russell’s concept through the lens of a non-jazz theory [Webern]… that things fell into place. Nothing really ever happens in isolation.’ Hans Koller
