WELCOME TO ROYAL BIRMINGHAM CONSERVATOIRE THEATRE COMPANY’S SUMMER ’18 SEASON

ABOUT ROYAL BIRMINGHAM CONSERVATOIRE

As a result of the recent merger with Birmingham School of Acting, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire is now a multi-disciplinary institution of music and acting offering an even greater range of performances from world-class professionals and emerging talent.

Formerly known as Birmingham School of Acting, we are now part of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. With roots as a drama school going back to 1936, we retain the professional outlook and commitment to contemporary training that has seen our acting courses consistently rated amongst the best in the UK.

Comprised of final year students from our acting courses, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Theatre Company has established a reputation as one of the city’s most exciting outfits. The Company’s composition changes every year, so our seasons are highly eclectic, presenting a wide range of works – some challenging, some moving, some witty, but all with a freshness that comes from working with emerging professional actors. The Company is supported by an energetic and creative production department consisting of a professional Stage Management Team, Property Master, Set Designer and Wardrobe Mistress. Each year, the Theatre Company is directed by professionals who present work nationally and internationally, ranging from productions in the West End to those for the Royal Shakespeare Company. We look forward to welcoming you to our performances. Julian Lloyd Webber Principal of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Stephen Simms Vice Principal (Acting)

SOLD Sex trafficking and slavery are as big a problem in the UK now as they were when John Godber’s hard-hitting and humane play was first performed in 2007. Two journalists go undercover to investigate the ‘new slave trade’ – but what happens when happily married family man Ray pays sex worker Anja to tell her story, and then decides to ‘rescue’ her?

DON JUAN IN CHICAGO

CRIMES OF THE HEART

By David Ives

By Beth Henley

Directed by John Adams

Directed by Vik Sivalingam

Weaving together the story of womaniser Don Juan and the Faust legend, David Ives has constructed this timetravelling comedy.

Beth Henley’s Pulitzer Prize winning dark comedy, Crimes of the Heart, is a little bit Chekhov and a little bit Eudora Welty. It tells a twangy story of three Mississippi sisters loving, feuding and fussing through a very bad day.

Having planned to spend eternity in scholarly contemplation, Juan finds his time consumed with a relentless search for sexual partners, in which he is abetted by long-suffering valet, Leporello – until finally, as a tiresome fixture on the singles scene in Chicago, he realises sadly, “I have spent my life checking my watch and taking off my clothes.”

DON JUAN IN CHICAGO

CRIMES OF THE HEART

Babe has just shot her husband; Meg is fresh from a Hollywood psychiatric ward; and poor Lenny celebrates her 30th birthday alone in the kitchen by sticking a candle in a cookie and making wish after desperate wish…and their horse has just been hit by lightning. Henley’s brilliant dark comedy was called “A pure vein of Southern gothic humor” by The New York Times.

WASTE By Harley Granville Barker

Vocalists from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

Directed by Lynn Farleigh

With spell-binding intimacy, Father of Opera and Archetypal Troubadour – Claudio Monteverdi – spins epic tales of conquered hearts and lovelorn battlefields. In this staged production, iconic madrigals like Lamento della Ninfa and Tancredi e Clorinda weave together with lesser-known gems to create an Ariadne’s Thread of breath-taking music and compelling drama that traces a path to the core of what it is to love, fight, lose and overcome.

Famously banned by the censors in 1907, Harley Granville Barker’s controversial masterpiece gathers a large ensemble to expose a cut-throat, cynical world of sex, sleaze and suicide amongst the political elite of England. Henry Trebell’s political star is on the rise, then a casual affair results in horrifying consequences. Can he survive?
