I’ve now been in post here at Birmingham Hippodrome for a few weeks and already am enjoying being part of such a buzzing venue. In the months leading up to my arrival, I spent many an hour exploring Birmingham. I really want to get under the skin of a city that I regularly visited when I was younger (my Dad was born in Brum and my parents met here), but that has undergone so much transformation in recent years; it’s incredible to see the city has gone from strength to strength. What struck me then and what continues to excite me, now, is the diverse range of creativity, dynamism and energy that Birmingham and the West Midlands exudes. This is particularly true on the eve of the Commonwealth Games and in the midst of the Birmingham 2022 Festival in which Birmingham Hippodrome is playing a key role (see our full line up on page 34). I have long been an admirer of the Hippodrome; of course, it’s one of the country’s most spectacular venues with the finest range of outstanding productions. I love how the organisation is working hard to forge meaningful connections with the young people and artists of the region, coupled with a real focus on producing diverse and innovative work, both on and off stage as we positively move into a post-Covid world.

The forthcoming season of shows is a spectacular one. It’s filled with a host of major musicals including the rescheduled runs of Les Misérables and We Will Rock You, and the stunning triple bill On Your Marks from Birmingham Royal Ballet. We can’t forget our collaboration with Rambert on the world premiere of Peaky Blinders - The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, a truly unmissable event. B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival will make its return in June, with heats taking place on the Hippodrome stage and finals at Bullring & Grand Central who we are also delighted to be partnering on the presentation of the everpopular Birmingham Weekender featuring free performances from local, national and international artists at the end of August. In the same month, Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton will come alive to the sounds of ska, calypso and rock ‘n’ roll as we present To The Streets! an uplifting new concert musical inspired by the Bristol Bus Boycott, co-produced with China Plate. I cannot wait to get stuck into my new role here at the Hippodrome, getting to know the teams, artists and visitors to the venue at such an important and exciting time. I look forward to welcoming you to one of our fantastic events over the coming months!

Rob Beckett is back on tour with a brand-new stand-up show. It’s been a busy few years for the Mouth of the South and he’s coming to see you to fill you in and make you laugh.

Described as “a truly gifted stand up” by The Sunday Times, join Joanne McNally as she revisits her irreverent and critically acclaimed show The Prosecco Express.

Bygones by Out Innerspace Dance Theatre UK PREMIERE Bygones celebrates how we are shaped by what we overcome and how something challenging can lead to something beautiful. It explores a past that clings to the present, a connection that runs through space, people, objects and time. Dancers are in flux. The movement is rigorous, hyper-detailed and virtuosic. Ghostly architecture, puppeteering and illusions create a world of phony things and supernatural selves. Change is the problem and the solution, earning transformation and the ability to reconnect.

To The Streets! An uplifting new concert musical, inspired by the Bristol Bus Boycott and produced by Birmingham Hippodrome and China Plate, performed in the heart of communities across the West Midlands. It’s 1963 and the Swinging Sixties have arrived: The Beatles release their debut album, the mini skirt is born and the Civil Rights movement is gaining ground in America. Back in the UK, the country is emerging from the Big Freeze. As temperatures thaw, tensions are running high in Bristol where the Omnibus Company refuses to employ Black or Asian drivers or conductors.

Paul Stephenson, an idealistic youth worker, takes to the streets to stand up for equality. Lorraine, a teenager, newlyarrived from Jamaica, joins the fight and, in so doing, finds her voice and becomes part of a movement that changes history. With an explosive, feel-good score bursting with ska, calypso and rock ‘n’ roll… this is a story of allyship, standing up for what you believe in, and ultimately - finding joy.

WASWASA - Whispers in Prayer WASWASA - Whispers in Prayer is an immersive theatrical experience by artist Mohammed Ali that explores the act of Islamic prayer and what that means in a modern, secular society. The physical act of prayer now extends beyond religious spaces to places such as parks and citysquares; it spills over into our everyday worlds. It is even visible in sports arenas with athletes

prostrating to the ground or raising hands to the sky in moments of triumph. Can we draw parallels between an act of personal faith and our quest to achieve a higher state of focus? The audience is invited to walk through a combination of live performance, art installation and projected film zones that disrupt the conventions of theatre, placing them at the very heart of the story. Mohammed Ali together with his Soul City Arts team aim to demystify this familiar yet misunderstood tradition of Islamic prayer through an extraordinary multi-disciplinary show that will challenge our perceptions.

Based on the Pulitzer prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winner Marsha Norman, The Color Purple tells the story of courageous heroine Celie, as she journeys through joy, despair, anguish and hope in her own personal awakening to discover her unique voice in the world. Winner of Best Regional Production (WhatsOnStage awards), the critically acclaimed Birmingham Hippodrome and Made at Curve production is a moving and soul-raising family chronicle set in racially divided southern America in the 1900s. As the years go by, abused and oppressed Celie becomes resigned to her unfortunate lot in life, but when her friendship with fiercely independent Sofia and love affair with glamourous singer Shug start to shake things up,

she begins to question her world; and understand that there must be more to life. With a profoundly evocative score by Grammy award-winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and drawing inspiration from jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, this landmark musical celebrates life, love and the strength to stand up for who you are and what you believe in.

Migrations

Janáček The enigmatic diva Emilia Marty looks younger than her years. The secret of her youth, a magical elixir of life taken centuries ago. For over 300 years she has lived many lives - moving across Europe, changing her name and breaking hearts along the way - as she chases a desire to be the greatest singer of all times. But as the elixir starts to wear off will she become desperate to find the recipe for her eternal youth? Prepare to be engrossed in one of opera’s most thrilling mysteries as The Makropulos Affair leads us on a journey to reveal the real identity of this intriguing woman. Conducted by WNO’s Music Director Tomáš Hanus, Janáček’s intensely dramatic score only adds to the mystery, leaving you wondering whether immortality can really bring happiness, or is it just a curse?

The desire to broaden our horizons is a natural one, but for many, it is a necessity to improve on circumstances. However, the result of doing so often has unintended consequences. Through a series of parallel storylines, Welsh National Opera’s new opera explores the highs and lows of migration: from the migration of birds to the sailing of The Mayflower over 400 years ago; from the story of an Afro-Caribbean slave in Bristol to the experience of Indian doctors working in the NHS. The versatility of the music, composed by British composer Will Todd (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), is unlike anything ever performed at WNO, and adapts to the setting and mood of each narrative, written by six writers from diverse backgrounds. An expanded WNO Orchestra is joined by a cast of 100 performers, including the WNO Chorus, a gospel choir, Bollywood dancers and a children’s chorus. This is an epic drama on a huge scale, an unmissable live experience.

It’s easy to find us Main entrance address Hurst St, Southside, Birmingham, B5 4TB. Check networkwestmidlands.com for details on public transport routes, or call Traveline on 0871 200 2233 (fees may apply). Both New Street and Moor Street train stations are very close and well signposted. Many bus routes and the West Midlands Metro pass very nearby, and we are well-served by taxi ranks. Please note Tickets are sold for the use of the buyer only (and their party) and are not for resale for commercial gain by the holder. We reserve the right to cancel tickets and refuse entry without refund if this condition is breached.
