I’m writing this introduction from Edinburgh: for those of you who’ve been to the festival before, you’ll have an idea of what it is like to see five or six shows a day - only the very best stand out in your memory. And it’s only those that are truly unforgettable that I hope to bring to Birmingham for you to see. That’s the business that the Hippodrome is in - creating and presenting unforgettable performances. Looking through this brochure, there are so many standout productions to choose from, so many memories to be made.

The Hippodrome’s ability to continue to present such amazing productions is down to you - our audience. As a charity in receipt of no revenue funding, your continued support ensures we can keep bringing you unforgettable performances. Powered by you!

Christmas again brings The Nutcracker, our Pantomime - this year starring none other than Beverley Knight and Danny Mac - and a wonderful children’s show in the Patrick Centre, The Snow Dragon. Spring is fairytale season, with Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty, followed by the spellbinding Wicked.

It’s not all about the blockbusters though, and there are many gems to be found in the programme. Free talks and events, the TEDxBrum conference in October, and the expanding programme in our Patrick Centre studio offer up a treasure trove of alternative treats. Personally, I’m looking forward to The Play That Goes Wrong and Motionhouse’s Charge, both in March.

We do all we can to encourage people to experience live performances. Whether it’s an audio-described, captioned, signed or relaxed performance – we really want you, or a friend or relative to have a more fulfilling experience. Audio Described Performances & Touch Tours Listen to a live description of all the action with a discreet headset. Pre-show, enjoy a touch tour, so if you are visually impaired you’ll be able to familiarise yourself with the set and costumes for the performance ahead.

Everyone’s Welcome

Similar to television subtitling – if you are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing you can watch the script unfold on a display board near the stage.

BSL Sign Language Interpreted Performances A signer communicates the script and sounds of the show visually, using gestures and facial expressions.

Relaxed Performances Designed to welcome into the theatre people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, learning disability or sensory and communication disorder. If you know somebody worried about seeing a show, this is an ideal chance to experience live theatre.

Out of nowhere, drummers march towards each other from street to street, their drumsticks twirling and their colourful faces sizing each other up for a confrontation of rhythm and light.

Get swept up in the ragtime fun of Kenneth MacMillan’s Elite Syncopations, where a host of eccentric characters flirt, dance and vie for the limelight. Acosta Danza - Debut Following an exceptional career as a ballet star, international dance icon Carlos Acosta launches his brand new company, Acosta Danza. Based in Havana, the company is made up of the best dancers Cuba has to offer who have trained in both ballet and contemporary dance styles. They will perform five new and existing pieces by Cuban choreographers who have rarely been seen outside the country, and commission new pieces from international choreographers who will take inspiration from their iconic nation.

TEDxBrum 2017 Now in its fifth year, TEDxBrum is an independently organised and volunteer led event. In conjunction with the global initiative to spread ideas further, the TEDx program was born in 2009 to enable individuals and communities worldwide to hold locally relevant and independent events. Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company: Inter_rupted In the past few years, Aditi Mangaldas’ creations have garnered her international attention as the key contemporary Kathak creator in India. Based on true events, Khovanshchina takes us back to 17th-century Russia where the country is in turmoil. The noble Khovansky, joins forces with the Old Believers, as they rebel against modern reform being imposed by the Tsar. As personal and political ambitions combine and clash with both constitutional and religious forces, the struggle for power will result in grave consequences.

Rosalinde is looking forward to a few days’ carefree time with her lover, while her husband is facing time in prison. Her maid asks to be excused in order to care for a sick aunt. In truth all four characters are planning to spend the evening at a magnificent masquerade ball given by the prince. As the characters are brought together in various guises, we set the scene for a hilarious story of mistaken identity full of splendour, posh frocks and masks.

WNO’s Artistic Director David Pountney and new Music Director Tomáš Hanus join forces for this revival of Musorgsky’s epic opera, addressing themes of politics, madness and death as relevant today as back in history. Combined with striking staging and powerful, unforgettable choral music, it promises to be an unmissable event in WNO’s Autumn Season.

Centred around the extravagant ball, the events of Die Fledermaus are set to a rich, romantic score by Johann Strauss II featuring some of the most irresistible melodies ever written for the stage. The cast is led by Judith Howarth and Paul Charles Clarke fresh from their leading roles in Madam Butterfly for WNO in June 2017.

Tatyana is a young country girl convinced that the dashing Onegin is the man of her dreams. When she declares her devotion to him via a love letter, he rejects and humiliates her. Onegin then flirts with Tatyana’s older, engaged sister setting off a tragic chain of events – a tale of how unrequited love and the ways of high society can catastrophically collide.

Set in a claustrophobic Siberian prison, David Pountney’s production is a collage of inmates’ stories as they recount why they ended up in jail. During a time of political oppression, each individual tale explores the extremes a person will go to, to right a wrong. A glimmer of hope takes the form of a great eagle that prisoners painstakingly nurse back to health, a symbol of Russia but also of freedom itself. Janácek based both the music and the libretto on the recollections of Russian writer Dostoyevsky. On stage we’re following the story of a number of characters through an ensemble cast and chorus, but the true protagonist is the WNO Orchestra, conducted by WNO’s new Music Director Tomáš Hanus.

Tchaikovsky’s best loved opera, is based on the Alexander Pushkin novel of the same name. Simple and classic countryside settings are contrasted with beautiful ballroom scenes and rich costumes reflecting high society at the time. This poignant story showcases the battle between the yearnings of the heart and social convention, all through a score of wonderfully romantic choruses and evocative arias.

Director of Music Fund for Cuba, Rob Miller, talks about the dance culture of Cuba and work of the fund, a UK registered charity which aims to nurture the talents of children and young people by supporting creative and cultural programmes on the island. The talk also explores the inspirational story of the 6-year restoration of the Miramar Theatre in Havana, returning a derelict and dilapidated theatre back to a fully functioning rehearsal and performance space.

Madness and Love

Unrequited love, love for sale, selling out, art, cinema, cinematic stardom - these are some of the themes of the film of Sunset Boulevard.

The Medieval History of Fairytales.

How Billy Wilder’s film evokes, dramatises and conveys these themes and a comparison to how the musical does the same will be the subject of this talk with Jose Arroyo. Jose Arroyo is Principal Teaching Fellow in Film Studies at the University of Warwick. This talk is presented as part of SHOUT Festival of Queer Arts and Culture. Good if you’re going to see: Sunset Boulevard (p19).

To chime with two very different approaches to Cinderella, and the ballet Sleeping Beauty, Dr Victoria Flood explores the beginnings of these stories, in a fascinating talk exploring fairy narratives in medieval culture, including an Old French version of Sleeping Beauty. Dr Victoria Flood is a lecturer in Medieval and Early Modern Literature at the University of Birmingham, investigating the transmission of fairy narratives across borders in medieval and early modern Britain. Good if you’re going to see: Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella (p35) or Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty (p36).

Groove on Down the Road ZooNation UK leading hip-hop dance company ZooNation, are proud to present this new adaptation of their critically-acclaimed production Groove on Down the Road. The company behind Into the Hoods, Some Like It Hip Hop and The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party give their unique twist to the classic story of The Wizard of Oz. Set in a fantastical urban world, ZooNation’s Groove On Down the Road tells the story of Dorothy and her adventures with Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion on their journey to Oz. The audience join Dorothy, complete with ruby sneakers, and friends in this hip-hop dance production as they follow the yellow brick road in a quest to find happiness and family. This project will see ZooNation working with young people from Wolverhampton and Birmingham to re-imagine this well-loved story. Originally produced by Southbank Centre. Supported by Wales Millennium Centre and Arts Council England.

Timeless and treasured fables from the Indian sub-continent. Step into the enchanting world of the Moghul King Akbar and his witty advisor, the legendary Birbal…

This immersive, high-energy performance features spoken-word artist Maxwell Golden and graffiti artist Mr Dane. Set within a purpose-built graffiti installation, an original children’s book is brought to life and interwoven with freestyle hip-hop improvisation.

Mashi and Bhanji are travelling story-tellers, living hand-to-mouth with just a wooden cart, trinkets they have collected on their travels, and a family of mischievous crows for company.

The Bouncing Cats and Boom Boom Pups need your help as they navigate AnimaLand so audience beatboxing and participation is required.

Stopping one day for lunch, they recreate mythical tales of the great King Akbar and his wise companion, Birbal. How can a man survive a night in a freezing lake? How many crows are there in a kingdom? Only Birbal knows!

Freefalling for 15 Years Freefall Dance Company Freefall Dance Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s own company of highly gifted dancers with severe learning disabilities, celebrates 15 years of performances in the Patrick Centre with the first public presentation of the company’s latest film, Outside In, created in partnership with Sima Gonsai. Filmed on location at Lunt Roman Fort, Coventry, Outside In also features Birmingham Royal Ballet principals Jenna Roberts and Iain Mackay. The film will be presented alongside live performances of a mixture of new works and some old Freefall favourites.

Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales: The Vaudevillians After selling out an often-extended Off-Broadway run and an Australian tour, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon arrives in Birmingham with the UK premiere of The Vaudevillians, a bawdy, rowdy musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales. Throughout the 1920’s Kitty Witless and Dr. Dan Von Dandy toured the United States as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow – instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to Global Warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Now, at long last, they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs, performing their music as originally composed. Alongside their main programme, Birmingham Royal Ballet continues to introduce new audiences of all ages to their world-class dance and music. Studio to Stage is an hour-long, entertaining and in-depth introduction to the world of ballet, demystifying the language, the artistry and the practicalities of all the leaps and lifts. This inclusive, relaxed experience aims to prove that ballet really is for everyone. Studio to Stage includes a short performance featuring two Company dancers, accompanied by a pianist and a speaker. What is the relevance of a life in conflict? When stories are told so carelessly by the media, it seems that individuals are lost and we only see what the cameras want.

Welcome to the beautifully strange world of White. Full of birdsong and birdhouses, it gleams and dazzles and shines in the night. Two friends look after the birds and make sure the eggs stay safe. We watch, we help. The world is bright, ordered and white. But high up in the trees, all is not white. Colour appears. First red... then yellow... then blue...

#JeSuis brings the lens upon a group of dancers whose place in the world is presented by the media as unwanted neighbours; countries where human catastrophes are a daily given. Aakash Odedra has developed #JeSuis with a group of Turkish dancers he met in Istanbul. It is inspired by their collective responses to misinterpretations of their motherland by the media. Wrapped up in wider issues of displacement, refuge, instability, both politically & geographically, it portrays their frustrations of life in a homeland that doesn’t know the meaning of “home” anymore. A place where people keep struggling for a sense of peace; where freedoms/choices are becoming luxury and the main hope is to be safe.

Commissioned by The Movement - a dance producing partnership between Birmingham Hippodrome, The Lowry and Sadler’s Wells.

Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella Following the sold-out and critical success of The Red Shoes and Sleeping Beauty, New Adventures return to Birmingham Hippodrome with one of their most popular and beloved productions. Don Alvaro and the beautiful Leonora plan to elope, but when her father is killed by a stray bullet from Alvaro’s gun, it triggers an inescapable chain of events. Forced to flee as they are pursued by her brother, who has sworn vengeance, the characters are thrown together and torn apart in a series of coincidental meetings. The other-worldly presence throughout, of the carefree Preziosilla, provides a constant reminder that the force of destiny really is unstoppable.

The arrogant and charismatic Don Giovanni seduces his way around Europe, taking what he wants and living for lust, without conscience. When one of his conquests ends in murder, it looks like his luck is about to turn. He finds himself on the run, pursued by disgruntled exlovers, fiancées and a force from beyond the grave. But when he refuses to show remorse, vengeance is inevitable and leads to his ultimate demise.

Verdi’s epic opera is told through a rousing score that includes the instantly-familiar Overture popularised through its use in classic film scores and advertisements. This new production directed by WNO Artistic Director, David Pountney, and conducted by WNO Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi - marks the beginning of a three year partnership with Theater Bonn to bring new productions of some of Verdi’s greatest operas to the stage.

Based on the legend of Don Juan, Welsh National Opera’s production is set during the Spanish Golden Age. Mozart reflects both comedy and tragedy brilliantly in the score, including the ‘Catalogue’ aria detailing Giovanni’s list of 2065 lovers, the sparkling ‘Champagne’ aria and the high drama of the heart-stopping finale.

Charge, Motionhouse’s incredible new multimedia show is about energy. From the electrical charge that sparks human life, to the beating of our hearts and the memories we make, six performers use dance and acrobatics to delve deep into the human body, tracing the incredible story of energy in our lives. Digital projections create a world on stage where dancers and images interact seamlessly, bringing to life stories of energy in our own bodies and humans as energy manipulators. In an exciting fusion of art and science, Motionhouse has worked with partners from the University of Oxford on the role of electricity in the human body to inspire the show. Charge is the third element of Kevin Finnan’s ‘Earth Trilogy’, developing on themes explored in Scattered (2009) and Broken (2013) about our relationship with water and the earth.
