The Role
To promote, develop and establish a positive safety culture within the organisation so that it can meet its legal requirements in terms of Health, Safety and Compliance. To take responsibility for both Strategic and Operational matters relating to Health, Safety, and Environment and to provide competent support to Hippodrome staff.
The post holder will report to the Head of Technical Services and work closely with the Head of Visitor Services and will be the primary point of contact for internal and external key stakeholders with regards to Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance.

What does success look like in this role
Promotes, develops and establishes a positive safety culture within the organisation so that it can meet its legal requirements in terms of Health, Safety and Compliance.
Takes responsibility for both Strategic and Operational matters relating to Health, Safety, and Environment and to provide competent support to Hippodrome staff.
Role specific
Lead in creating and maintaining a climate in which individuals feel safety has high value, and that they are clear about their own responsibilities, and the safety aims and objectives of the wider organisation
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and best practice. Provide regular updates on all new or amended Health and Safety legislation to employees as appropriate.
Monitor individual departments compliance with Birmingham Hippodrome’s Health and Safety Policy and procedures and formally advise heads of department on areas of non-compliance.
Manage the ISO45001 Health and Safety Integrated Management and ISO14001 Environmental Management systems, ensuring effective operation across all Hippodrome departments. Identify opportunities for continuous safety improvement and assist heads of department and managers in their implementation.
Responsible for the programme of internal monitoring and auditing of all Health, Safety and Compliance obligations, providing associated noncompliance reports, actions, and opportunities for improvement.
Act as primary contact for external Health & Safety and Environmental audits, including liaison with auditors and preparation of reports and documentation in line with the requirements of ISO45001 & ISO14001.
Monitor, review, and update action trackers associated with internal and external audits.
Administer and support the MY Compliance system, delivering training to employees as required
Prepare reports and documentation for Health & Safety and Environmental meetings.
Ensure that all accidents and near misses are reported and investigated in accordance with Hippodrome procedures
Identify Health, Safety, Environmental and other compliance-based training and development needs across the organisation. Monitor effectiveness of internal & external training.
Establish procedures associated with health, safety and environmental training needs for employees and ensure training requirements are reviewed and records are maintained.
Establish, develop, and maintain systems for site induction and permit to work for contractors & visitors.
Responsible for the appointment of Authorised Persons in accordance with the Permit to Work System.
Liaise with external bodies such as local authorities and specialist groups on health and safety and environmental issues as required.
Liaise and develop good working relationships with employees and partner organisations concerning on site activities in so far as Health, Safety and Compliance are concerned
Advise senior leadership on changes to the health & safety polices arrangements, and procedures.
Assist with the monitoring, review, and updating of the Major Incident and Business Continuity Plans.

Relevant Experience
A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar/equivalent role
Previous experience of carrying our internal audits
Creation of procedural documentation
Proven experience of carrying out risk assessments and producing method statements
Proven experience of organising and delivering H&S and environmental training
Previous experience of carrying out audits to ISO45001/14001
Experience of working in a large-scale arts organisation
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Excellent working knowledge of health and safety legislation
Excellent working knowledge of environmental legislation, principles & standards
Experience of undertaking accident investigations in a dynamic working environment
