www.CreatingAladdin.com 16

Created for the National Ballet of Japan in 2008 and re-created in Birmingham in 2012, Aladdin is aimed at a family audience. The ballet is a large and spectacular production, designed for touring, and complete with a host of technical tricks including a flying carpet. David Bintley looks back to the original tale, taking Persian and Far-Eastern influences, to create a fast-paced and modern balletic version of this well-known story.

‘A terrific couple of hours’ entertainment.’ THE OxFORD TimES

‘A joy to behold.’ THE SCOTSmAN

The first of David Bintley’s fairytale ballets and one of the most successful. A darkly gothic but family-friendly ballet with the relationship between Belle and the Beast intense and strongly painted. As well as a stunning set which literally opens like a book, the ballet also features Bintley’s trade-mark wit in a humorous wedding feast scene where Belle’s sisters’ suitor, monsieur Cochon, cannot decide which of the two to marry!

‘Spellbinding... choreography, score, set and lighting are in total harmony.’ THE STAGE ‘Breathtakingly atmospheric.’ THE DAiLy TELEGRAPH ‘A gorgeous piece of fantasy and stagecraft.’ mANCHESTER THEATRE AWARDS

HHHHH ‘Sensational.’ THE DAiLy ExPRESS

A huge hit with audiences and broadcast by the BBC as the BBC Christmas Ballet in 2010, David Bintley’s interpretation of the classic Prokofiev score is one of the most popular ballets in the Company’s repertory. Bintley returns to Prokofiev’s original Skinny and Dumpy ugly sisters, danced by women, but ‘ugly’ on the inside. The ballet boasts a spectacular ball and some stunning coups de théâtre, such as the clock at the end of the ball and a beautiful carriage like spun sugar.

‘Potent, imaginative and emotionally intoxicating.’ THE STAGE ‘This sumptuous Cinderella is a banquet for the eyes.’ THE DAiLy TELEGRAPH ‘Bintley’s production is a winner.’ THE iNDEPENDENT 21

Cyrano 2007 Choreography David Bintley Music Carl Davis (Commissioned score) Designs Hayden Griffin Lighting mark Jonathan Fight Director malcolm Ranson Number of roles 45 (17 female/25 male/2 actors/1 child) Running time Three acts: 55/35/40 minutes

22

‘Masterful choreography.’ THE BiRmiNGHAm mAiL

A lush, romantic period ballet based on Rostand’s play, Cyrano tells the moving story of the love triangle between Cyrano, Christian and Roxane. Complex choreography and mime, encompassing humour and tragedy, cleverly depict this story about the power of the written word. With sword fights a-plenty and a spectacular, pyrotechnic-filled battle scene, Cyrano is contemporary classical ballet, with three-dimensional characters and a relevant, accessible story.

‘Cyrano is one of these rare birds, a truly skilled family ballet... with a flowing story, lashings of set opportunities and an atmospheric score.’ THE ARTSDESK ‘It sends an audience out... with a warm feeling in their hearts.’ THE DAiLy TELEGRAPH 23

Edward II 1995 Choreography David Bintley Music John mcCabe (Commissioned score) Sets Peter J. Davison Costumes Jasper Conran Lighting Peter mumford Number of roles 49 (15 female/24 male/8 actors/2 children) Running time Two acts: 60/55 minutes

‘Remarkable.’ THE DAiLy TELEGRAPH

24

H Barclays Theatre Awards Outstanding Achievement in Dance, 1998 H Olivier Award nomination, 2000

A no-holds-barred tale of the tragic love between Edward ii and Piers Gaveston, based on Christopher marlowe’s play. Scandalous at its premiere, Edward II is no longer such a controversial work, though it has lost none of its power and emotion in the intervening years. Every detail of Edward’s life from his relationship with Queen isabella to the brutal murder of Gaveston, and Edward’s own gruesome end, is mapped out in beautiful choreography against stunning, stylised sets and costumes from two of the UK’s greatest designers.

‘Outstanding choreography.’ LONDONDANCE

‘Delivers some of the most daringly imagined choreography of his career.’ THE GUARDiAN ‘Fills the stage with some unforgettable images.’ THE STAGE

Far from the Madding Crowd 1997 Choreography David Bintley Music Paul Reade (Commissioned score) Designs Hayden Griffin Lighting mark Jonathan Number of roles 42 (16 female/20 male/6 actors) Running time Three acts: 50/40/42 minutes

‘Packed full of lust, deceit and murder.’ THE BiRmiNGHAm mAiL

26

Based on Thomas Hardy’s 1874 novel of the same name, Far from the Madding Crowd is period drama at its best. With a story that doesn’t allow for the fantastic coups de théâtre for which Bintley is known, the work relies purely on the gorgeous and authentic designs, and detailed and expressive choreography to tell the story of Bathsheba Everdene and her eventful, tragic, but ultimately happy and fulfilled life.

‘Intelligent, passionate, hugely atmospheric.’ THE DAiLy TELEGRAPH

‘Some of the best neo-classical dance-making seen in this country.’ THE DAiLy ExPRESS ‘This is David Bintley’s masterpiece.’ THE STAGE 27

Hobson’s Choice 1989

‘Bintley’s most fully realised narrative work.’ THE GUARDiAN

Choreography David Bintley Music Paul Reade (Commissioned score) Designs Hayden Griffin (Costumes co-designed with Claudia meyer) Lighting John B. Read Number of roles 29 (9 female/18 male/2 children) Running time Three acts: 34/28/42 minutes

28

H Olivier Award nomination, 1990

‘Excellent.’ THE SCOTSmAN

Hobson’s Choice, based on the Harold Brighouse play of the same name, is arguably David Bintley’s most successful fullevening ballet. At its premiere at the Royal Opera House in London it received an ovation, the like of which hadn’t been seen since Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée, nearly 30 years before. it tells the touching and genuinely funny tale of the unorthodox romance between Will mossop, a poor boot maker, and maggie Hobson, the fiery and determined daughter of Will’s alcoholic boss, Henry.

‘Delightful, lovable comedy that’s David Bintley’s finest and most entertaining work.’ THE ARTSDESK ‘A warm and tender ballet that just radiates with David Bintley’s mischievous sense of fun and his great love of British dance.’ THE STAGE 29

The Prince of the Pagodas 2011 Choreography David Bintley Music Benjamin Britten Designs Rae Smith Lighting Peter Teigen Number of roles 47 (24 female/23 male/3 children) Running time Three acts: 50/40/42 minutes

‘A real theatrical feast of delights... visually stunning.’ WHATS ON STAGE

30

‘Beautiful and eye-catching.’ THE ARTSDESK

Originally created for the National Ballet of Japan, David Bintley’s The Prince of the Pagodas is an epic, colourful, Japanese fantasy, set to Benjamin Britten’s well-known score. it follows the adventures of Princess Belle Sakura as she tries to thwart her evil stepmother’s plans and discover the fate of her long-lost brother. Steeped in Japanese history and culture, and inspired by Ukiyo-e, traditional Japanese woodcuts, the production was designed by Rae Smith, creator of the internationally successful West End play, War Horse.

‘The sheer beauty of what you see unfolding on stage is a total delight.’ THE BiRmiNGHAm POST ‘Bintley has laid on a feast for the eyes.’ THE mAiL ON SUNDAy

‘A crowning glory for brilliant Bintley.’ THE iNDEPENDENT

Sylvia 1876/1993/2009 Choreography David Bintley Music Léo Delibes Designs Sue Blane Lighting mark Jonathan Number of roles 33 (20 female/11 male/2 children) Running time Three acts: 34/24/40 minutes

‘Gorgeous... a delight from start to finish.’ THE SUNDAy ExPRESS

32

‘Splendid.’ THE DAiLy TELEGRAPH

Using a new prologue, David Bintley contextualises the traditional story of Sylvia, making it more comprehensible and relevant to a modern audience. The main body of the ballet becomes a morality tale in which all the guests at a 1950s party are sent back in time to ancient Rome by the mischievous Eros, in disguise as the gardener. Under Eros’s ever-present guiding (and often comical) hand, the bickering Count and Countess go on to learn the true value of love.

‘Bintley has a merry eye and a command of classical dance-making that sits delightfully on this score.’ THE FiNANCiAL TimES ‘An ingeniously reworked version.’ THE GUARDiAN
