Birth Roots
Birth Roots is a Perinatal Resource Center serving families all over Southern Maine at our locations in Kittery and Portland. You might be wondering about what perinatal means and what a perinatal resource center might provide. Lets start with a few definitions: 1. Birth - a sequence of physical, emotional, and developmental events causing an individual to become a parent and a fetus to become a newborn. 2. Perinatal - the period from conception to a child’s first birthday (the three months before pregnancy are also often included in our definition). 3. Perinatal Health - when the symbiotic relationship between babies and their parents is thriving, maturing, and activating potential or dormant intelligence in both.
Our Community Birth Roots classes and services are available to all families regardless of where or how you give birth. Families are exposed to a diversity of options through Birth Roots classes and services so they may find the resources, information and connections to best serve the birth and parenting experience they desire.
Our Philosophy
The work of Birth Roots is grounded in the philosophy that the way people are treated at birth (as a mother, as a newborn child and as a family unit) has lasting effects far beyond that one day. Mothers who feel respected and self-determined in giving birth tend to view themselves as equipped to provide nurturing care as a parent. Fathers who are given encouragement, tools and modeling for participating in the process of birth tend to be more engaged in their child’s care and development. Children born in an environment of confidence, awareness and intimacy tend to be more resilient and able to thrive.
Our Mission The Birth Roots model is non-clinical, community based education and support throughout pregnancy and the first year of parenting. Our programs and events build community, encourage insincts and intuition, address social, emotional and non-clinical needs and promote our philosophy of “Community Supported Parenting”. Birth Roots is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization devoted to removing obstacles to perinatal health by offering continuous support through pregnancy and postpartum in a community setting.
Staff Founding Directors Leah Deragon, CCE, Doula, Leah has been a doula and childbirth educator for over a decade teaching many of the pre and postnatal classes at Birth Roots. Leah’s gift of facilitation creates a class environment that fosters connection, dialogue and meaningful reflection. Through Birthing From Within and Blossoming Newborns, Leah brings the Birth Roots mission to life by building community and promoting deeper understanding and the exploration of options.
Leah
Emily Murray, CD, HBCE As so many in this field, Emily became a doula and childbirth educator after attending an amazing birth, the birth of her niece in 1997. She was forever changed by witnessing her sister’s transformation through pregnancy, birth and parenting. She started Birth Roots as a means of ensuring that families feel confident and connected throughout pregnancy so they can enter parenthood on steady ground. Through Body-Mind Birthing Emily offers families tools for relaxation and confidence in birth. She also teaches blossoming newborns: seedlings and 4th Trimester classes. Emily
Staff Jodi Phinney, Office Manager, Birth Doula Jodi is the person your likely to be in contact with first as you register for classes. She is available to answer your questions and help you find resources.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that is now being used widely even within the western medical world. Acupuncture can be used broadly to sustain or improve health during pregnancy and postpartum or for more specific circumstances such as encouraging labor to begin, turning a breech baby, lowering blood pressure, low milk supply, colic, postnatal healing, postpartum depression, etc. Beyond pregnancy and birth, women and men planning to conceive or undergoing fertility therapy with western medicine can use acupuncture to enhance their body’s preparedness for welcoming a baby.

Birth Places Women experiencing a healthy, low-risk pregnancy have a wide range of options of where to birth. You and your provider will make judgments about whether or not you or your baby fall into the category of low-risk, high-risk or somewhere in between. Most birth places offer tours so you can get a sense of their routines and amenities. A few questions to ask: 1. How do I feel when I walk into the birth space, comfortable, nervous, scared, at ease? Do I feel any different the second time I see the space? Is there anything I can do to make the space feel more calming and familiar? 2. What would happen if my birth didn’t go as planned or if I or my baby needed a little help or significant help during labor, birth or postpartum? 3. Does this birth place offer the things that I envision being helpful to me during my birth experience? If so are they routine or special requests? 4. Does my insurance cover this birth place? If not, what are payment options?

Classes - Childbirth & Parenting
Classes Childbirth & Parenting Many of us do not have the benefit of seeing or participating in labor and birth until it is our turn. In generations past, seeing a mother, sister or aunt give birth then helping to care for her in postpartum gave women a template for what to expect from the birth and the postpartum experience. Fathers, being relatively new to the support team have even less exposure to birth before they become a parent. We now rely more than ever on quality classes to bring us together with other families to create a sense of community and to inspire us to participate more fully in the decisions about our care during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

Find Your Flock Your “flock” is the group of friends and family that you surround yourself with that you can go to for reassurance, advice, ideas, and support. Some flocks develop childcare swaps, playgroups, and continue to meet for many years. Your social and emotional needs change and grow throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Your old social support network often doesn’t fit with your new needs.
Birth Roots classes and groups are a great place to find your flock.

Doula | Labor & Birth
Doulas | Labor & Birth
The foundation of doula support is emotional, physical and informational support for a woman and her family before, during and just after childbirth. That is the book definition, but a doula’s work encompasses much more. The process of labor and birth is a complex collaboration of mind and body. A doula’s job is to know how to influence the environment in which a family is birthing in order to facilitate the most comfortable, fulfilling and uncomplicated birth possible while helping a family to express their unique needs and preferences. The following is one way a family might find and hire a doula: 1. Find a few names and contacts from the list below. 2. Call or email 3 or more doulas with your basic information to see if they are available for your due date and work where you are birthing. 3. Select a couple of doulas and make an appointment to meet face to face to see how you connect . 4. Select the doula that you and your birth partner are comfortable with if you liked more than one, sometimes your second choice can be your backup doula if the two doulas have a working relationship. 5. Meet with your doula 2 or more times until you are both confident that there is an understanding of your preferences and expectations. Meet doulas and special guest speakers at a free Doula Tea at Birth Roots hosted by Rebecca Goodwin of Birth Alliance once a month. call 318-8272 to register.

Portland Shiatsu and Birthing Jen White, LMT, Doula (DONA) 207-712-4213 | 8 Wessex St., Portland jen@portlandshiatsu.com www.portlandshiatsu.com
Birth Roots hosts doula training twice a year in January and June. We also host quarterly classes in Labor Support Skills for those looking to deepen their understanding of the process of birth yet have no interest in completing a doula certification.
The philosophy of Shiatsu is circular, in nature, where the practitioner considers all aspects of a client’s life. As a Shiatsu practitioner and Doula, I believe working holistically, to support expectant families and babies, is crucial to a healthy birth

Doula | Post-partum & In-home Care Each family has unique needs during the transition from pregnancy to parenting. Most doulas work with families in the first 3 months, but are available throughout the first year. Emotional support, tidying up the house, doing laundry, caring for a pet or for older children, and fixing meals are just a few examples of things a new family will need help with. Getting the help you need can mean the difference between surviving and thriving as a new family.

Maternity & Prenatal Care
Maternity & Prenatal Care Providers
Providers Most of the providers listed here offer well woman care throughout your reproductive life. When choosing who will care for you throughout your pregnancy and birth, it might be helpful to know that all of the providers listed here offer a similar, basic schedule of prenatal visits and tests for women experiencing a normal pregnancy. The differences are in where they attend births, specific skills, experience, special training, philosophies, prenatal visit routines, and birth routines. Schedule a visit or a phone conversation so you can get to know a few providers before you make your final decision. Some questions you might consider; 1. Does this person’s routine practices, personality and philosophy fit with my preferences for birth and put me at ease about how I would be cared for? 2. What is the likelihood that this person will be the one at my birth and am I comfortable with the back-up provider(s)/partners? 3. What is their schedule of prenatal visits and recommended tests? 4. How long do visits last and what is the normal routine for a prenatal visit? 5. Are there any special skills or knowledge this person has that I want or need that set them apart from other providers? Following is a brief description of the certifications and specialties you might see as you make your decisions about who will care for you and your baby. The experience, philosophy and experience of providers will provide. Homebirth Midwives CPMs (Certified Professional Midwives) They complete training and apprenticeships before becoming certified through NARM (National Association of Registered Midwives). They provide well woman care and midwifery care to women experiencing a low risk pregnancy and who wish to labor and birth at home with little to no intervention. Online resources: www.narm.org & www.macpm.org. Hospital Midwives, CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives) They are registered nurses with advanced, specialized training in well woman care, pregnancy, labor birth and postpartum. CNMs provide care in a hospital setting and work with families planning unmedicated births as well as those who prefer to use medical tools such as epidurals. Online resource : www.midwifery.org. Family Practice Doctors, MDs and DOs They have training in all aspects of health care for every member of the family. Some, including those listed in this guide, have additional experience and training to provide care during pregnancy, labor and birth – some choose to make this the focus of their practice and work with a wide range of families. Online www.familydoctor.org Obstetricians They are doctors who have advanced training and specialize in reproductive health and the care of women during pregnancy, labor and birth. Most work with a broad range of families; from those preferring a natural birth to those experiencing a higher risk pregnancy or birth and who need or want access to a wide range of medical tools. www.acog.org Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists They are doctors with extensive advanced training who specialize in high risk pregnancies and deliveries.

Osteopathic Physicans Osteopathic Medicine is based upon a science of healing which acknowledges that human beings possess an innate capacity for self healing. If the Osteopath (DO) can remove the obstructions in the system, nature “will kindly do the rest”. DO’s are fully licensed physicians, who practice all branches of medicine and surgery. Osteopathic training includes the same basic medical school curriculum as MD schools, with an additional 500 hours of training in manual diagnosis and treatment. Cranial Osteopathy is a type of Osteopathic treatment that offers the physician a deeper understanding of, and ability to communicate with, the human being’s living physiology, as well as a broader range of therapeutic options. This approach offers a gentle, safe and effective way to address the full spectrum of healthcare issues that affect pregnant women, newborns, and infants. Even the “normal” processes of labor and delivery are stressful events for mothers and children. The Osteopath provides prenatal care for the expectant mother to address issues that include morning sickness, swelling of hands and feet, sinus congestion, back pain, and preparation of the pelvis to ease labor and delivery. Osteopaths also treat newborns for a wide range of issues including colic, poor suck/latching, irritability, sleeplessness, ear infections, and structural strains.
