Cooper Black book Ward Nicolaas
Everywhere, everyday in our lives, the typeface Cooper Black turns up. Laundromats, dentists, restaurants, comic books, albums covers, magazines, advertisements, airplanes, films, art galleries and fruit gums worldwide... they all use or display Cooper Black, an all time popular font type, developed in the ‘20s by Oswald Cooper. The first step in fully understanding Cooper Black is to accept the fact that it is ugly: sexy ugly. But even without understanding anything about typography or graphic design, this Big Black and Beautiful book will guide you through your own ‘aha’ moments of recognition and surprise.

Oswald Cooper 1879 –1940
The passing of Oswald Cooper leaves for many of us an unfillable void. Where can we turn in these days to find another truly great man so utterly unimpressed by his own importance? The story of Cooper has a definite homespun quality. It is no mere coincidence that various people in speaking or writing of Cooper have mentioned his likeness to Lincoln, for there was much about him that was reminiscent of ‘the Great Emancipator’ — not only his long, lanky figure and homely, lovable face, but his kindly nature, his dislike of ostentation, and his quaint, dry humor.
