PRAYERS
in our community:
in our world:
For anyone who has lost a loved one, may they find comfort in their friends and family.
For people battling addiction, may they find the strength to seek help and recover.
That students and faculty stay free of illness in the cold winter months.
For the overall health of our nation, that sick people may receive proper care for their illnesses.
In thanks for all of the sacrifices our parents and teachers make so that we can receive a Catholic education.
That people continue to fight for peace and equality among our citizens.

The journey of a dollar bill
from mint to BCHS
We have all spent money before, but have you ever wondered where that dollar bill has been? When we stop and think about where our cash has traveled, we realize that hundreds of people have spent, earned or given away that money before it ended up in our hands. This infographic follows a single dollar bill based on its serial number over the last few months as it travels around the country and is spent on different things. (website: WheresGeorge.com)
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing prints the dollar (in either Fort Worth or Washington, DC) and then prepares to send it to the Federal Reserve.
The Federal Reserve System then holds all money in a vault until it is “ordered by one of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks.

Ultimately, a dollar bill that began its journey in Kansas City ended up at BCHS, being used to buy lunch by senior Holli Parker.
It was then received as change after a recent shopping trip at Target in Indianapolis.

This individual dollar was then sent to a private bank in Kansas City, where a check was cashed.
This particular George Washington was then spent at “Posh Nails” in a suburb of Kansas City.

1920s
A popular clothing item for women in the 1920s were flapper dresses. Actresses and models helped make this item a must have. As for men, sharp suits were a sign of high social status. Leonardo DiCaprio portrayed the common look for men in the 20s, as Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby.
1940s
During the 40s, dresses were made to look more masculine. Since the men were out at war, the women had to step in and make sure society continued with day-to-day life.
1950s
The “greaser” look was popular among teenage boys. The look consists of black leather jackets, a white shirt and jeans. This look was epitomized by Johnny Depp in the movie Cry-Baby.
Witness the evolution of 1980s
When Michael Jackson donned his red jacket in the music video for “Billie Jean,” he didn’t realize that many people, including Kanye West would still be wearing similar pieces to this day. Jane Fonda started a massive spike in the sale of fitness gear when she released her aerobics videos. 6
1990s
Jennifer Lopez earned her stardom in the 1997 movie Selena. Lopez received a lot of publicity for this role and would promote athlesiure clothing and club gear. Will Smith started out as “The Fresh Prince” on the radio; however, when he was approached to do a sitcom by NBC, he felt like he had nothing to lose. Smith’s wacky taste in clothing inspired other boys and men to do dress like “The Fresh Prince.”
News
1960s
John and Jackie Kennedy’s taste in clothing poured out into the general public. John made the “Ivy League” look while Jackie used pillbox hats and oversized sunglasses to influence the women in the country.

The hippie lifestyle reaches its peak. Musicians like Jimi Hendrix were among the many celebrities of the time who influenced hippie culture. Hippie clothing included tye-dye and long hair for both genders.

Pain relief meds -
Know what you are taking and know how much to take Editor’s note: This content is for informational purposes only. Do not use this as medical recommendations. Always check with your medical professional regarding your health.
Tips:
Take medicine with food to reduce an upset stomach. Slow-release, extended-release or enteric-coated tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration of time. Do not assume that one brand has the same dose as another. Always check the dosage instructions on the label. NSAIDs should not be used in the last three months of pregnancy; always ask your doctor before using any medication during pregnancy. See a doctor immediately if you experience any difficulty with breathing, unexplained sickness or fatigue, loss of appetite, vision changes, fluid retention or abnormal bleeding.
Q& A
How do pain relievers work? Doctors believe acetaminophen works on the parts of the brain that receive pain messages. It also works with the part that controls body temperature. Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) reduce the level of prostaglandins your body makes. This hormone-like substance irritates your nerve endings and creates the feeling of pain. NSAIDs reduce the feeling of pain in that area.
Can I take both acetaminophen and ibuprofen? Yes. Research studies have shown that ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) together work well to relieve certain types of pain. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen work differently, and they’re cleared from the body by different organs. Acetaminophen can put some stress on the liver, and ibuprofen may put some stress on the stomach and kidneys, but if you’re using these drugs in safe amounts, there is minimal concern here. As always, it is important to follow all medical advice and dosing information.
What are the side effects to pain relievers? Both pain relievers are relatively safe for short-term usage, but both have some possible side effects:
Acetaminophen • taking too much can damage liver (Remember - many other medicines have acetaminophen in them besides Tylenol.) • highly unlikely, but can develop rash or blisters
Ibuprofen • upset stomach • possible ulcers • heartburn • constipation

earth experiences drastic changes
due to natural disasters and climate change
While there may be political arguments regarding climate change and what to do about it, there is no doubt that change has happened and photos tell the story.

Why does the greenhouse effect matter? Greenhouse effect: describes how the Earth's atmosphere traps some of the Sun's energy Greenhouse gases surround the Earth like a blanket. As people burn more coal, natural gas, and oil, the blanket becomes excessively thick, dense, and less likely to allow heat to escape. Heat gets trapped inside the blanket of greenhouse gases and the Earth becomes too warm. (source: MassAudubon.org)

Useless body parts show course of evolution As humans have evolved and adapted to a constantly changing world, certain traits and body parts that are beneficial to survival are passed down through generations of reproduction. However, not all passed down traits are useful, and useless parts are slowly removed over time through evolution. The term “vestigial” is often used to describe these body parts, being defined by Merriam-Webster as, “Of a body part or organ: remaining in a form that is small or imperfectly developed and not able to function.” Vestigial structures in the human body show evidence of evolution and the survival of the fittest, first introduced by Charles Darwin.
Third Eyelid Your plica semilunaris is the small fold of tissue located on the inside corner of your eye. This small tissue are the vestigial remains of what are referred to as “nictitating membranes,” which are most commonly found in birds, reptiles and amphibians. The membrane is typically translucent, and it serves to moisten the eye and clear debris.
Shown here is a nictitating membrane of a masked lapwing, closing over the eye in order to moisten it.
Appendix The appendix is arguably one of the most well-known vestigial structures in the human body. Scientists believe that the appendix may have helped early human ancestors digest a cellulose-rich diet. It is believed that the modern human appendix is primarily a storage facility for digestion-aiding bacteria, but nothing has been proven.
Tonsils Similar to the appendix, the tonsils are generally believed to have no purpose, and often need to be removed due to infection. When tonsils are infected and swell up inside the throat, airflow can be blocked and oxygen access restricted. According to the South China Morning Post, over 500,000 kids every year have their tonsils removed.
12
Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the third molars that helped human ancestors to grind plant tissue. It is believed that the skulls of human ancestors had larger jaws with more teeth, which possibly helped to chew plant matter. For modern humans, there is not enough room for them to grow into your mouth comfortably, often resulting in orthodontic procedures to remove them.
Tailbone Your coccyx, better known as your tailbone, is the very last part of your vertebrae, and is the often considered a remnant of a lost tail. Pretty much every mammal on earth had a tail at some point in their lives, even if it was while they were developing in the womb. Take humans, for example. Between stages 14 and 22 of human embryogenesis, one can observe a tail-like structure that is absorbed in later stages.
Goosebumps Your arrector pili are the smooth muscle fibers that contract involuntarily to give you “goosebumps.” If you’re an animal covered in fur, this can provide insulation from thick, standing fur trapping air between the erect hair follicles or make you look bigger by standing your hair up on end. Modern humans are not hairy enough for either of these applications, rendering the arrector pili a vestigial structure.
