This past year, Bishop Fenwick celebrated 50 years of service to the people of God through the ministry of education. It was a wonderful time to be a part of this community as we remembered the stories, reconnected with friends, former teachers, and former students. Thank you to all who joined with us at our various events to say congratulations, well done! As we look forward to the next five years and well beyond, we realize that we have to be aware of the challenges that we face and the opportunities that those challenges present. We also have to develop measures against which we can evaluate our efforts and progress. Next year, we officially begin our self study in preparation for our ten year accreditation. This is a golden opportunity to reflect on who we are, where we are and what we need to do to reach our goals. The faculty and staff have been working hard for the past two years to define Bishop Fenwick’s uniqueness and to identify qualities and characteristics of a Bishop Fenwick student/graduate. We have reflected and shared ideas about how we, as a community, a family, can work towards the formation of that person. Effective leadership and strong collaboration are critical keys to the success of our strategic planning. We must all be committed to school wide improvement; understand and work towards nurturance of the faith formation of students and faculty and staff; see the importance of building and fostering team work and partnerships. It is easy and right for me to say that all of the good things that are happening at Bishop Fenwick are happening because of the tremendous and loving support of all of you; our alumnae, our parents, our friends. We have greatly expanded the number of classrooms with Promethean Board technology, the athletic offices have received a make- over, the auditorium/ gym foyer has been totally redesigned, the art rooms have been completely outfitted with Macs, the Memorial Pavilion is growing and really enhances the entrance to the building. My hope and prayer is that you will continue to work with us to make sure that the community of faith and loyalty that is Fenwick will continue to thrive and that, together, we will make a difference in our world.
In Christ, Sr. Catherine Fleming, SND Principal
Fenwick’s mission is to provide a Catholic, college-prep, co-ed education‌.. and it must remain affordable and accessible. Reasonable tuition supports a healthy enrollment, and helps to ensure that the families in our communities who desire a Fenwick education can access it. Fenwick relies on broad participation in our Advancement Program from alumni, parents, and friends to help cover that subsidy, and keep tuition at a rate that our families can manage.
Dear Bishop Fenwick Family, It is my pleasure to present you with the fiscal year 2009-2010 Annual Report of Philanthropy. I want to thank you, on behalf of the faculty and staff, for your support and commitment. It is a privilege for us to partner with the Fenwick community of ambassadors and investors to facilitate and secure the financial and human resources so necessary for the school to perpetuate the vision at the core of our mission. Your many generous gifts support the mission of providing the best overall academic and personal experiences for our students, and it is our pleasure to do so. The support of our alumni, parents, grandparents, friends, Board of Trustees, corporations and foundations continues to aid all of our students who seek a Bishop Fenwick education, every day. Bishop Fenwick’s 50th anniversary year was a joyful celebration of the Fenwick Family’s many wonderful accomplishments since the doors opened in 1959. If you haven’t had a chance to read through the 50th Anniversary book, I would encourage you to do so. Gary Larabee has put together Fenwick’s history in a compelling and fascinating read, and ends by laying out the many opportunities which lie ahead for the Fenwick Family. The highlight for me this past year occurred at the 50th Anniversary Gala. Ralph Le Duc spoke so eloquently of his 40+ years of dedicated service to Fenwick, and then invited all the Sisters of Notre Dame up to the stage to be acknowledged. The extremely talented Alex Newell ’12 led the Sisters in the French and English version of the SND song, “Oh, how good is the Good God.” No one in the crowd of over 400 people moved a muscle as this extremely special group of women, who had dedicated their lives to our God and to the Christian education of our young people, raised their voices in pure music. The Sisters of Notre Dame have led us, and continue to lead us, in the important and meaningful mission of Bishop Fenwick High School. Specifically, the faculty and staff is committed to creating an academically challenging, nurturing environment that is rooted in the gospel message of Jesus Christ and the charism of St. Julie Billiart, foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Throughout this past 50th Anniversary year, we celebrated the precious gift that is Bishop Fenwick High School, given to us by St. Julie Billiart, Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick, Richard James Cardinal Cushing, and our dear Sisters of Notre Dame. As Arthur Makar ’68 said in his presentation at the Gala, “Our enthusiastic presence demonstrates a love and respect for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, an extraordinary group of women, both for what they taught us academically and for the other things we learned from them. These other things included bonitas et fidelitas-- goodness and loyalty, a sense of social justice and the necessity of working hard to achieve our dreams.” By partnering with Fenwick, you perpetuate and grow these dreams. All of the treasure, talent, and time extended in support of Bishop Fenwick High School becomes a chorus of thanks for what was established by the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1959, and celebrated throughout our 50th year. These investments are more than “good financial decisions”. Academic research is bursting with social and financial benefits of Catholic education. This roll call of investments in Fenwick’s future represents gifts from the heart and the head. Because we know that the Fenwick experience transforms lives, and ensures that our values of service, tolerance, and civic engagement are perpetuated within our communities. Here’s to 50 more years of this very good work. Heartfelt thanks,
Lauren Chambers Fredette Director of Advancement

d Winners When Words Don’t Seem to Suffice “Going to work over at Fenwick” was something the Sullivan family just did, as far back as Audrey Sullivan ’82 can remember. “My mother worked at Fenwick for many years and had real affection for the Fenwick community,” Sullivan recalls. “As a student here, I received so much: a great education, opportunities to meet wonderful people, and a supportive environment to try new activities and sports… I had great role models in my wonderful parents and in the Fenwick faculty, all of whom taught me the value of service to others.” Sullivan’s own “going to work” over at Fenwick was to follow when she had a summer job in the mid-eighties, working as the front office secretary. Since then, she continues to enjoy being able to reconnect with friends and experiences of the past through her volunteer work at the school. From serving as a “Bingo Booster,” to joining the Advisory Board in 2002, to being appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2004 —and assuming the job as President in 2007— Sullivan has simply never stopped going to work over at Fenwick.

“I am compelled to express my gratitude, and words don’t seem to suffice as a way to say ‘thanks’,” she concludes. “But service and financial support do, and both help to ensure others have a chance to share in the legacy. I consider it a true privilege to serve so that current and future generations of students and families can experience Fenwick, too.”

Endowments, Scholarships and Grants We are touched and humbled when individuals and families choose to “make a difference in perpetuity” by establishing endowed funds and named scholarships that will aid Fenwick students now, and for all time. Our deepest thanks go out to these faculty, alumni, and parents who have planned and implemented all of this goodness. “By their gifts shall ye know them…”
A special Thank You to all who contribute to scholarships at Bishop Fenwick. To check on the current value of an endowed or named scholarship, please contact the Fenwick Advancement Office.

The World is Simply More Beautiful
Because of Fenwick It is filled with more art, more drama and more song. Our students’ painting, photography, drawing and sculpture win statewide competitions, and our graduates get accepted into the nations’ finest art schools, every year. Our drama students enjoy countless opportunities to act, design, and entertain in exceptional productions with the guidance of alumni and faculty who share their own love for the stage. Our chorus, chorale and band members compete nationally, lifting their hearts, mind and spirit in the classroom, on the national stage and even Carnegie Hall!

50th Anniversary Eve 50th Anniversary Liturgy
We are: Fenwick. For what is life if not a chance to dance and sing and share and bring to all who touch us a kind and tender love. And when we meet our God and praise Him for His gifts, we will thank Him for life and love and how we learned to give in that one brief and beautiful Moment in our lives.
Bishop Fenwick’s 50th Anniversary celebration officially began with a beautiful Liturgy commemorating this anniversary year with Sean Cardinal O’Malley presiding. Thank you to the many Fenwick Family members who joined in this celebration of “goodness and loyalty”.
I call the Moment “Fenwick”. Father Richard Messina from his farewell essay, 1983

Students pray here. In their classrooms. With their teachers. In our chapel. And when something important happens, we gather for Mass, together. Over 100 Sisters of Notre Dame have taught here. Seven chaplains and many lay and religious leaders have helped guide us on our spiritual journey.
We are a community of Faith.

Fenwick Pavilion Brick Campaign Bishop Fenwick continues the tradition of “etching in stone” the names of individuals who donated to the Brick Campaign. The following list reflects only the bricks that were purchased between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. We are ever grateful to all who have supported this effort both now and in the past. We hope to continue this tradition long into our future.

Because of Fenwick
Whether it’s the fine arts or the fine playing fields, or the advanced classroom and lab equipment, Fenwick students have always been provided with what they need to shine. It’s all made possible by virtue of gifts from parents, alumni, friends, and members of the business community. Your Goodness and Loyalty offers opportunities for our students, and we are grateful.
Fenwick is the reflection of the gifts you share.
