Miner Family Return New updates and programs for the upcoming academic year.

Principal's Introduction Welcome back, Miner Families! As we quickly approach the beginning of our 2022-2023 school year, we are excited to share with you everything we have been planning to make this year amazing at Bishop Manogue. The Miner Family Return explains the new programs, new policies, and new activities we are instituting under the four pillars of our mission - Faith, Knowledge, Leadership, and Compassion. While you might not want to read about policies (we get it…not the most riveting content) we hope you will take the time to read our revised handbook policies, including uniforms, so you are ready for the first day of school. After that, enjoy reading about our Faith experiences, new club opportunities, a coffee bar, and all of the amazing things coming from our counseling department. We hope all of you had an enjoyable and fun summer…even if it seemed brief! We look forward to seeing you and getting our school year started. Go Miners!

Faith Retreats Retreats are the heart of Bishop Manogue. It is an opportunity for students to come together, outside of the classroom, outside of the competition of sports and clubs, walk away from social media, and in an informal way to just “be.” The retreats are fun, loving, and centered around self-discovery and reflection. Taking part in the retreats is also a great way to meet new friends, re-establish relationships and identities, and reset during the course of the school year. It is our hope that every student attends the retreat for his/her grade level; Catholic or not, faith-filled or unsure, we welcome all students to celebrate and get to know one another. Since its inception more than 20 years ago, these retreats have evolved to offer more opportunities and in-depth reflection targeted at specific grade levels. Below is the 20222023 Retreat schedule.

2022-2023 Retreat Schedule Quest - Freshman Sunday, September 11 at Bishop Manogue Kairos 67 - Juniors & Seniors Oct. 16-18, 2022 at Zephyr Sophomore Retreat November 13-14, 2022 - Camp Galilee Kairos 68 - Juniors & Seniors January 22-24, 2023 at Zephyr Kairos 69 - Juniors & Seniors March 5-7, 2023 at Zephyr

Please Note! Due to unforeseen circumstances, dates and location are subject to change and the information listed is tentative at this time. Campus Ministry will keep students and parents/guardiane s informed of those changes, should they arise.

Leadership Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. -Proverbs 11:14

Freshman Link Program New this year is our Link Program. Freshmen and new students will be paired with Bishop Manogue student mentors to help welcome them into the Miner family. Freshman and new students will have the opportunity to meet their mentor for the first time on Orientation Day. Mentors are here to help students with the transition to being a Miner student, provide a source of information for everything Bishop Manogue, and help our new members get involved with all of our Miner events. Welcome to the family!

Counseling Services It has been a longtime goal of BMCHS to add staff to the counseling department and increase our reach to students on an academic level and we have reached that goal for the 2022-2023 school year. We now have four academic counselors and one full-time college counselor. The primary role of the BMCHS counselors is to serve as academic support to students. In addition to academics, they triage emergency situations and refer students and parents to outside services for mental and emotional health support and needs.

Leadership

Four-Year Plan for Freshmen Each October, counselors meet with freshmen families to discuss collegiate aspirations. From there, counselors build a four-year course plan. Four-year planning meetings are not college meetings. These meetings are designed to discuss goals and objectives and then select coursework that aligns and ensures students are on track to graduate. For in-depth college meetings, we ask that freshmen families reach out to Mrs. Burke, our College Counselor.

Leadership Community Engagement Series New this year is our Community Engagement Series, which is being offered to build awareness around our community’s mental health resources and provide tips to keep our students, families, and schools safe. The Community Engagement Series is set for mid-October. During the school day, students will be split into male/female groups for their sessions. As an added bonus, the same speaker will do a virtual presentation for parents each night at 6 p.m., allowing families to join from anywhere.

A basic schedule and overview can be found below, but a more detailed outline can be found here.

Community Engagement Series Schedule: Monday, October 10: Michael Theberge, ICE - Department of Homeland Security. Michael will be covering the dangers of social media, and internet/cybersecurity as it relates to child privacy, providing resources to both groups of students and parents as well as tips on how to stay safe. Tuesday, October 11: Michelle Brister (Program Manager) and Afshan West (Executive Director) from Safe Embrace. Michelle and Afshan will be covering healthy relationships with peers and romantic interests, dating violence, consent, and sharing resources for sexual assault survivors or for those who may need help. Thursday, October 13: Tiffiny Herrick, licensed Clinical Social Worker. Tiffiny will join us to talk about the warning signs and impacts of anxiety and depression on adolescents and offer resources on where to receive help. Additionally, we are offering the Signs of Suicide program from the Children's Cabinet. Students will receive education from mental health professionals on the warning signs of depression and suicidal ideation. Parents, you will have the option to sign your freshman for suicidal ideation for free in the fall (November 8, 2022) or Spring (March 6, 2023). Permission slips and student education will be provided two weeks prior to the screening dates.

Leadership

School Policies High school kids are growing every day, and in addition to learning academically, they are also learning how to navigate through their teenage years. We understand mistakes happen and there are going to be some bumps along the way. We look at these mischoices as learning opportunities for our students and we aim to educate them on how to make good decisions that will positively impact their life. There are some new changes happening in student conduct this year, as well as some refreshed policies. A summary of some of these updates are identified below. Please read Chapter Five of the Parent-Student Handbook for a more detailed explanation and outline of how student conduct will be regulated this year.

Appearance Code Updates

Attendance Policy Updates

In an effort to streamline student appearances, we have refreshed our appearance code policies and we will be strictly enforcing the following:

We understand life happens and students need to miss school or arrive a little late. However, we appreciate it when students observe and respect our attendance policies. New to attendance this year is our handling of tardies:

Students must wear a Bishop Manogue polo every school day, including under any Manogue outerwear. Students need to wear twill or Chino material pants or capris. Athletic style bottoms, including “Lululemon style” joggers and shorts will not be permissible. Students are never to wear sweatpants bottoms, even those purchased through a spirit pack with a Manogue logo.

Uniforms can be ordered online here.

2022/23 Miner Family Return

Students who have multiple tardies may be required to serve Saturday school detentions. Students with persistent tardiness may be placed on Attendance Probation, which may result in a loss of extracurricular participation or attendance at athletic and school events. Students with excessive absences without reasonable documentation will be placed on an attendance contract. Violation of an attendance contract may result in loss of course credit or expulsion from Bishop Manogue.

9

Leadership

Refreshed Behavior Code and Disciplinary Response Perhaps our most significant update to student conduct is our disciplinary response structure and behavior code regulation. Families are strongly encouraged to read the new, detailed structure in the Parent-Student Handbook. Some highlights are included here: Saturday school detentions have been added to possible consequences. Saturday school will be used for repeat offenses or mid-level behavioral mistakes. A disciplinary ladder system will be implemented: a possible mischoice from a student correlates with a consequence on the ladder. Please read the Parent-Student Handbook for this detailed process. All disciplinary actions are subject to administrative discretion as to placement on the disciplinary ladder in keeping with the severity of the student’s misbehavior.

Leadership

New Faculty and Staff We are excited to welcome a host of new members to our faculty and staff. The additions to the teaching staff have allowed us to lower our class sizes greatly, specifically for math and science. Administrative additions provide for more streamlined processes and communications. Please help us welcome these new members to our community! Meet our new Miner staff and faculty here.

Compassion Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. -Colossians 3:12

Service, Extra-Curricular Activities, and Athletics Bishop Manogue remains committed to providing our students with a fulfilling high school experience both in the classroom and beyond. We believe these events and extracurriculars are equally important to the education we provide; students need community, spirit, and a healthy social and physical environment to continue their personal growth.

Community Service A variety of service opportunities are offered throughout the school year. Students will be notified of the opportunities through their Theology classes, Miner TV, and/or the Weekly Wire. Additionally, students can check in with Ms. Klekas here as an additional resource for opportunities. Each student is required to obtain 25 hours per school year for a total of 100 hours by the time they graduate. Due to Covid interfering with service opportunities for one year, 75 service hours is permissible for the classes that were affected by it.

Compassion Spirit Student Council is the heart of spirit at Bishop Manogue. Our Student Council members are working hard to ensure that the 2022-2023 school year is off to a spirited and successful start! Make sure you are following @manoguespirit on Instagram for updates on all activities, spirit days, and the opportunity to vote for your favorite events.

Clubs Clubs are a great way to get involved and have fun with your Miner family. Anyone can create a club or join a club - and we highly encourage you to do so! Watch for news about our Club Fair and Contact Mrs. Haeberlin-Cope for questions about academic clubs (NHS, Academic Team) and Ms. Gamble for questions about social clubs (baking, sodality, squires, gaming). This year we are adding two new clubs to our extracurricular program, Robotics and Model United Nations. These additions will create depth to our robust student clubs and organizations, encouraging students to explore content and communities that provide perspective in our ever-changing world. Robotics Club: The purpose of the Robotics club is for students to learn how to code and write commands for robots through play. By programming and controlling robots, students will step into the world of science, acquiring knowledge and skills that will be useful and applicable beyond the classroom. This club is great for students interested not only in robots, but also in computer science, engineering, and applied technology. Model UN: Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and its other multilateral bodies where students perform an ambassador role while debating topics such as gender equality, climate action, global health, and more. Through public speaking, critical thinking, and indepth research, the Model UN experience allows students to cultivate skills and enrich their global affairs knowledge. Students with an interest in the global interconnectedness of our world should explore this program.

Knowledge “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” -Proverbs 2:6

Schedules, Deadlines, and Academic Information With each new school year comes inevitable changes in schedule, events, deadlines, and more. Below you will find the most updated information to help you stay organized and prepare for upcoming BMCHS happenings. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we will keep you abreast of changes and additions, but this basic overview will help give you a rundown of what to expect in the 20222023 school year.

Where in the World? We have some relocations! In order to accommodate our new student population, we have turned the Knowledge Center into another Student Center. Ms. Klekas and Ms. Gamble now have their offices in the Knowledge Center, and seating has been rearranged and added in order to allow students to gather in quiet groups during lunch and break or to study independently at either of those times. .

Knowledge Blackbaud Since the spring of 2022 we have been slowly transitioning to our new computer software system, Blackbaud. For the last year, our team has worked diligently to set up and offer a program that is user-friendly and all-encompassing for all things Bishop Manogue (accessing financials and admissions, viewing the BMCHS website, logging in to Google Classroom, obtaining athletics information, receiving and sending communications and requests, and more). As you begin navigating through Blackbaud, please know we are here to support and help you through the learning curve of a new system. Since this is a slow rollout, you may have limited access in your profiles’ settings and program abilities until all the different features have been released. Additionally, we ask for your patience as we transition our systems and programs from old software to Blackbaud.

New Courses New this year for all seniors, is a required course in Economics. This was recently adopted by the State of Nevada and is a graduation requirement. Economics (0.5 credit) will be provided alongside American Government (0.5 credit), providing students with a wellgrounded understanding of the intersection between economics and politics in our growing nation.

Bell Schedule - 2022-2023 Our standard weekly schedule includes a check-in day on Monday with all periods (learning, recap, preparing for major block periods) and standard block period days for the remainder of the week. Students will be excited to know we have opened another food service station and it includes a coffee bar before school, during break, and at lunch!
