NEW CONNECTIONS

It has been heartening to see such strong support for the Stortfordian Foundation this year. Your eagerness to embrace our global community networking initiatives have been simply inspirational; thank you.

Not surprisingly the Stortfordian Foundation team has had a busy 12 months. Many internships, mentoring and work placement opportunities have been arranged, and fresh professional connections made amongst OS, staff, and parents. Stortfordians were introduced to one another in locations a half a world away from Bishop’s Stortford, while year group reunions saw OS from across the decades joyfully reconnecting back here, on campus.

As steward of our history and heritage, the Stortfordian Foundation conducts dozens of campus tours, provides insight for family histories through archive research and helps to reunite long-lost school friends. At the hub of the global Stortfordian community, the Foundation team take great pride in sharing your news on social media and through online articles, as well as in hard copy in the form of the 50th anniversary edition of OS News.

In addition to the work they do to connect and foster relationships, the Foundation team have also fundraised extensively in support of causes that our community cares about, such as providing greater access to a College education through bursaries and renovating our

Memorial Hall pipe organ.

I hope that you will enjoy reading about the significant impact your donations have had in this document, and that you will be encouraged to continue to support us in our mission.

I would personally like to thank the dozens of individuals who have volunteered their time and talents to benefit the Stortfordian community either in a variety of practical ways, or by generously donating prizes for raffles and auctions in support of both the Memorial Hall Organ and the Stortfordian Bursary Campaigns; we are grateful for your kindness and regard for our community.

It is eminently clear that without the assistance and goodwill of supporters, we simply would not have accomplished so much to benefit our community over the past year. I therefore offer my unreserved gratitude to each and every individual and family who chose to take part in Stortfordian Foundation activities this year. No matter how large or small your involvement felt to you, our success would be impossible without your help.

Warmest regards, Kathy Crewe-Read

Head of Bishop’s Stortford College

Thanks to the generosity of the Bishop’s Stortford College Community, we are delighted to have received over £275,000 in charitable donations in the 2021-2022 year. Every penny of this is used to improve access to the College through bursaries, to improve teaching and learning spaces or to preserve our heritage buildings.

By far our most heavily supported initiative this year has been the bursary fund, for which we have raised a total of £223,941. A breakdown of the various appeals leading to the collective total is provided below.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

A great deal of what we do through The Stortfordian Foundation could be described as providing connections. We connect graduate and young professional OS with mentors, work experience and internships. We connect parents, OS, staff and other friends of the College in our school community through events. We connect OS with long lost friends through reunions and gather them in sporting pursuits. We connect our community to the College and to each others’ stories by sharing news online, through social media and in print, and we connect our supporters with opportunities to donate to Stortfordian causes that matter to them.

This year, through a number of different appeals, we specifically asked you to consider taking part in giving to the Stortfordian Bursary Fund and in support of the future restoration of the Memorial Hall Organ. I have been consistently amazed by the spirit of generosity which Stortfordians the world over responded with. It feels good to give to a cause that you care about, and so many of you genuinely care about helping to ensure Bishop’s Stortford College – and the pupils who attend it now and, in the future, – benefit from your contribution.

In July, I had the pleasure of speaking with the parent of a pupil who had been awarded a bursary as they celebrated Speech Day with friends. She spoke passionately about the opportunity awarded to her son being quite simply the making

of him. In her view, his two years at the College saw him transform from a shy boy to a self-assured young man, his promise fulfilled for this step in his educational journey. What an amazing testament to the gift of a bursary and the difference it makes in the life of an individual.

Over the past few months we have spoken to so many people whose memories of singing along with the beautiful organ in the Memorial Hall remains among the most prevalent of their schooldays. A universal experience for every pupil since 1927, it is our great desire to see this magnificent instrument refurbished so that it will be enjoyed and remembered fondly for many more generations to come.

Whether you have supported the Bursary or Organ campaign, or both, the amount we raised together for both initiatives so far has been simply extraordinary. Donors have come together like never before in response to the support of our appeals, and I am extremely grateful for your participation.

I would encourage those who haven’t yet donated to consider doing so this year and those who have donated previously to make giving to the Stortfordian Foundation a philanthropic priority once again this year.

As we look ahead to the brilliant programme of reunions, concerts, fixtures, and events planned for the 2022-2023 Stortfordian Foundation programme, we look forward to

providing another fantastic year of activities connecting you with the people, places, and causes that you care about.

Many thanks go to the Governors of Bishop’s Stortford College and the College Executive for their support and guidance. Finally I would like to thank the phenomenal Stortfordian Foundation Team, Jennifer and Wendy, for their hard work, resilience, determination and innovation over the last year. We all look forward to connecting with you in one way or another throughout the course of the coming year.

FUNDS UPDATE

College pupils and Old Stortfordians benefit from a number of historic funds which have been set up in trust by generous donors over the years, and by nature ringfenced for specific use as designated by the originating donor’s wishes. These funds are invested in a professionally managed portfolio and awards are typically paid out of income. A selection of these funds, and the impact they are having on today’s pupils are featured here.

Douglas Knock Memorial Fund*

The Douglas Knock Memorial fund was set up in memory of Surgeon Lieutenant Douglas Alexander Knock of the Royal Navy who bravely tended the wounded under fire when he was mortally wounded himself during the Korean War. The Knock Memorial Fund is a scholarship prize for those Old Stortfordians who pursue a degree in the medical field. The prize is meant to ease the burden of university tuition and is now worth up to £4,000 per year for three years of study in medicine or a closely related field. This year, we awarded £31,500 from the fund to 6th form leavers and OS.

Long Hughes Trust

Having once been reserved for “Boys born within five miles of St Michael’s Church”, The Long Hughes Trust is now a fund which is intended to fund a bursary for a disadvantaged pupil born within 25 miles of Bishop’s Stortford. This year £20,910 was allocated for this purpose.

Xerxes Captain Fund

The Xerxes Captain Fund was set up in memory of OS Xerxes Captain (MJH, SuH 1977-84) by his family. The award is intended for the purchase of books for the Library. This year £1,130 was spent providing new books to the Senior School Library thanks to the fund.

The OS Lodge Fund

This fund, set up by the OS Lodge, provides funds to cover the expenses of pupils to attend school trips who might otherwise not be able to afford to take part. This year £2,156 has been allocated to pupils by the Head from the fund for this purpose.

The Henry Rowles Bursary Fund

The Henry Rowles Bursary Fund was set up by the Rowles family in honour of their long association with Bishop’s Stortford College. The award is given to 6th form leavers on Speech Day and is intended to fund the purchase of books for university. Three winners were selected this past year and £450 was awarded.

6

The Horace’s Father Fund

The Horace’s Father Fund was set up by an anonymous Old Stortfordian in memory of his father and is intended to provide bursary support to a Prep School child at 11 years old. This year £608 was allocated for this purpose.

The Luke Westell Fund

The Luke Westell Fund was set up in memory of Old Stortfordian Luke Westell (HH 91-96), who tragically died while at Worcester College, Oxford. The award was created by Luke’s family specifically to recognise Hayward House leavers who distinguish themselves, as Luke did, as an “all-rounder”. This year £400 was awarded to the young man selected as meeting the criteria.

The Ian Aldridge Memorial Award

The Ian Aldridge Memorial Award was set up to honour the life of Ian Aldridge, a beloved teacher of Economics at the College, who died in 1987. The award is a special prize to recognize Old

Stortfordians who leave Bishop’s Stortford College having studied Economics and Business Studies, and is intended to help fund a gap year experience. This year £400 was allocated to an Upper Sixth leaver who was chosen as the sole recipient of the award.

MORE FUNDS

The Roger Heath Prizes

Every year, the Roger Heath Prizes, funded by the generosity of Old Stortfordian Roger Heath (RPH 46-50) fund three prizes, for excellence in piano, debate and for a pupil making the most of their time at the College. This year, £800 was awarded to the pupils nominated for the prizes.

The Webb Lingos Prize

An annual science prize funded by the generosity of Old Stortfordian Dr. Drew Webb (GH, RPH 1957-65) and his wife Dr. Tatiana Lingos, this prize is valued at £200 and is awarded on Speech day to a pupil who excels in science.

The Employee Fund

The Employees Fund is intended to provide financial assistance to Employees as and when a significant, unforeseen need arises for a staff member, to provide support during an unexpected crisis. The fund allocated £2500 this year.

*N.B We welcome applications from OS for funding from the Douglas Knock Memorial fund at any stage of graduate or postgraduate medical studies. Please contact foundation@ bishopsstortfordcollege.org to enquire.

In some cases it is possible to choose to donate to these funds, or even to propose the establishment of a new fund to support a specific purpose or in honour of someone.

Please contact Britt Holland Ellice, Development Director, for more information.

MUSIC FOR GENERATIONS TO COME: THE MEMORIAL HALL ORGAN CAMPAIGN

Through the generosity of individual donors and a number of smaller community fundraising appeals, we have raised in the region of £31,000 to date in support of the Organ, about a quarter of what is required. This is an absolutely wonderful achievement however we still have some way to go to raise enough in order to commit to the refurbishment of this magnificent instrument. Given the need to complete this work eminently, the urgency is increasing if we are to succeed in raising the funds to facilitate the refurbishment in this academic year.

If you have contemplated giving toward the Memorial Hall Organ Campaign, please consider making a gift, if you are able and feel inclined to do so. Everyone, from Old Stortfordians to Parents to Staff, and whether musically inclined or not, will have memories of our glorious organ presiding over assemblies, concerts and services throughout the years. We encourage you to take part in helping to restore it to its former glory and indeed improve upon it!

We welcome everyone to attend our Memorial Hall Organ Benefit Concert Series, a set of wonderful evening events featuring professional musical performances in support of the Organ campaign, which begins in December. Please refer to www.stortfordianfoundation.org/events for more information and to book your tickets.

WHAT IS REQUIRED?

The work required to repair and enhance the organ is extensive and thus the associated cost is considerable. In brief, the restoration and modernisation will entail:

Careful removal of the instrument by the specialist organ builder, and safe transportation to an offsite location for the cleaning, restoration and repair of all 1,030 pipes.

A number of new additional pipes will be added to improve the range of both pitch and dynamics of the organ, as well as an increased range of sounds.

A digital section will be added for the pedal organ, as well as some of the main section organ, to increase versatility.

A new swell box is required as the current one is no longer reliable.

Soundboards will be replaced, to assist with making the organ more robust against environmental factors in the Memorial Hall.

Permanent Recognition

All contacts will be replaced, and new bellows installed for better consistency of wind distribution.

The wind distribution system will be radically rebuilt, to improve the amount of wind going to every pipe, increasing reliability and quality of sound and strength.

The current organ framework will be slightly rebuilt. The console keyboards will be removed and the front of the organ opened up to allow more sound into the Memorial Hall from the instrument, better supporting hymn singing and performance usage.

The console will be replaced with a detached console, which can be moved, adding flexibility to the performances of the organ.

All who donate individual gifts to the Memorial Hall Organ Campaign will be recognized in our Annual Impact Reports, and those who give over £250 will have the option to feature on a specially commissioned donor board which will be located near the organ inside the Memorial Hall. This is to reflect the community spirit of supporting Bishops Stortford College which has been so instrumental to this project.

Alongside the names of individuals, you may choose to recognise family names or to remember loved ones in memoriam. If you would like to speak to us regarding making a donation of any kind to support the organ’s refurbishment, then please contact Wendy Dodd, Development Officer on 07483064346 or via foundation@bishopsstortfordcollege.org.

Donor & Major Donor Recognition

Gifts over a specified amount will be recognized on a donor board in the following categories:

Grand Patron £5000+

Sponsor of Individual Stop £2,500- £5000 1927 Patron £1000-£2500

Friends of the Memorial Hall Organ £250+

A note from The Chaplain

“Whilst we are blessed to have so many confident singers in our community, there are those of us who can only dream of sounding so good. Yet when we are once again backed by the big, full sound of the organ, even the most timid and tuneless amongst us (of which I am the first and greatest) can lift our voices and sing from our hearts. Memories are made and souls rejoice when the Mem Hall is filled with this glorious noise.”

Why I chose to donate: An Alumni Perspective

“I was a boarder in School House. That the Mem Hall organ was less than a stone’s throw away was a terrific bonus for any aspiring organist.”

LEGACIES – FIVE KEY QUESTIONS

Legacies are often the most significant gift a person can make, and yet recent statistics indicate that less than half of UK adults have made a will.

Remembering a charity such as the Stortfordian Foundation in your will can have a profound impact for generations to come. Over the years, legacies have played a major part in the development of Bishop’s Stortford College and we are hugely grateful for the legators whose bequests to the College have made a difference over the years. Similarly, we are grateful for the 68 individuals that we are aware of who have included Bishop’s Stortford College in their will. The 1868 Society exists for all those who have told us of their intention to leave a gift for the College so that we may thank them during their lifetime.

10

Why – Legacy gifts have played, and continue to play, an important role in the history of Bishop’s Stortford College. They have created bursaries, scholarships, and have contributed measurably to the environment in which the children live and learn. They have allowed family names to become a part of Bishop’s Stortford College for generations.

What – There are different types of gifts you can leave in your will, including:

a percentage of your estate, known as a residuary bequest a specific cash sum, or a pecuniary bequest

personal possessions – a specific bequest

All of these can also be left to provide for a loved one during their

lifetime, with the condition that it is then passed on to Bishop’s Stortford College. This is called a reversionary bequest.

Who – We would of course expect any gift to the College to be given after you have provided for your loved ones. If you leave 10% or more of your net taxable estate to registered charities such as Bishop’s Stortford College through the Stortfordian Foundation, you can reduce your inheritance tax bill from 40% to 36% - meaning you make more of a charitable impact without affecting the inheritance given to your heirs.

When – You can include Bishop’s Stortford College any time that you update your will, using a codicil or when writing your will for the first time. It may be at a significant life moment – but you can do it whenever you speak with your solicitor.

If you are happy to do so, please let us know once you have remembered Bishop’s Stortford College in this way so that we can keep you up to date with our plans and progress and extend our gratitude through the 1868 Society.

How – Speak with your solicitor about writing or updating your will to provide a legacy gift to Bishop’s Stortford College.

Many solicitors offer free will writing or updates during ‘Free Wills Month’ for those over age 55. For more information visit www.freewillsmonth.org.uk

To find out more about the 1868 Society, or to let us know of your intentions, please contact foundation@ bishopsstortfordcollege.org.

“Although never very good academically (and certainly not at exams) I learned so much more at BSC than I ever realised at the time, and the excellent well-rounded education and experience I gained there has helped me throughout both my personal life and professional career. If, by being a legator, I can help to enable someone else to enjoy the same opportunity then I’m delighted to do so.”

1961-67)

“One of the lasting interests I acquired at Stortford College was a lifelong love of art and architecture. I was fortunate enough to have genuinely inspiring teachers such as Walter Strachan, John Pittuck and Ralph Ullman. I wanted future students to be inspired in the way that I was. I have therefore provided a legacy to be used to acquire a small art collection to help to stimulate a love of the creative arts.”

Haynes (GH, Sha 1961-71)

Here are five points to consider when giving to Bishop’s Stortford College in your will:
11

BURSARY IMPACT

Thanks to your generosity, the first Stortfordian Bursary Award has been conferred in 2022!

Due to the overwhelming generosity shown from our wonderful Stortfordian Community in fundraising for bursaries through a variety of different appeals this past year, we are enormously proud to announce that the Head of Bishop’s Stortford College, Mrs. Crewe-Read, was able to make the first Stortfordian Bursary Award to a sixth form pupil.

Izzy T is an outstanding pupil who has joined the Lower Sixth cohort in September, looking forward to all the activities, opportunities and academic rigor that the College offers. Izzy’s passion is Biology, and so she is especially thrilled to have the chance to study Biology

A Teacher’s Perspective

“The opportunity to be part of the College Community and to have access to our excellent teaching staff who nurture and stretch students academically can be life-changing: students make amazing progress and end up with A Level results that truly open

for A-level at Bishop’s Stortford College. Thank you to all the donors who supported our bursary scheme in 2021-2022, and by extension Izzy– we have been overwhelmed by how Old Stortfordians and other donors have seized the chance to let someone shine among our brilliant pupil community through their generous response to our fundraising appeals.

As ever, if you know someone who would benefit from a bursary at Bishop’s Stortford College, contact bursary@ bishopsstortfordcollege.org where a team member can provide advice on taking this forward.

doors for them for University and the workplace. Put simply, they probably wouldn’t get these results elsewhere: our ‘value add’ at A Level is consistently at the highest level nationally.

Not only this, but the wider Sixth Form programme coupled with expert Higher Education and

Careers advice and guidance provides opportunities to discover and explore skills and experiences that aid the whole person development of each individual.”

Mrs K Banks, Head of 6th Form, Bishop’s Stortford College

12

A Bursary Parent’s perspective

“One of the reasons we have been so blown away is that the College is not the exam sausage machine we had sort of expected and he has gained so so much more, which will be as important as his pieces of paper.

I expect to be saying to my dying day – deciding to try for a bursary at the College and succeeding was the best thing we did and it has been, for him, an epochal point.”

A Bursary Parent’s perspective

“My daughter was thriving at a local school, but wished to attend Bishop’s Stortford College. We would have struggled to send her without the bursary.

The most obvious difference we noticed was a new confidence. I don’t mean a big-headedness or self-obsession; it was more that she found confidence to put herself forward for tasks and challenges that she would have previously felt too much or beyond her. Although at her old school she was well thought of and popular with staff and students alike, once at the College she found a different level of encouragement and support from the staff and her peers.

Another distinct difference from her previous school was the interaction between years. She was encouraged to mix with and even mentor younger pupils, leading her

to feel part of ‘one big family’ and certainly she enjoyed being part of it. It definitely helped develop a feeling of responsibility, for herself and for others.

As a pathway from GCSE’s to University the College helped develop the independence and responsibility needed for the next step whilst maintaining the support, encouragement and guidance required to achieve it.

Whatever the results she may have attained elsewhere I am certain that her experience at Bishop’s Stortford College has developed her into a more well-rounded, mature young adult than she might have been.”

A Former Bursary Recipient’s perspective

“I would not have been able to come to the College without the assistance and it stretched us financially as it was. A lot of time was spent in the College second hand shop sourcing cheap uniform! However, if I had not been to the College I would not have gone to medical school. Personally, I needed the push and focus that the College gave me.

I am now a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon. My specialist interest is limb reconstruction. I have been involved in a few high profile cases; I was

the consultant on call for both the Westminster Bridge Attack and London Bridge and was called in as an emergency responder for the Grenfell disaster. Whilst all that is quite grim it goes to show what can happen to a small boy who had to buy his uniform second hand.”

Matt Ives (MJH,SuH, 91-99) –Consultant Surgeon, Bursary Recipient

A Former Bursary Recipient’s perspective

“For me, Bishops Stortford College means home and sanctuary. A place

not just of academic excellence, but a place for pupils to grow and evolve in arts, music or sports as well. The biggest asset that Bishops Stortford College gave me was selfbelief, which helped build confidence in my abilities and the trust that I would use them well. I support The Stortfordian Foundation and the bursary initiative is especially important to me, as I would like other children to experience what I enjoyed as a recipient of a Bishops Stortford College bursary.”

Darren Winstone (SuH, MJH, 83-90), Bursary Recipient

A Former Teacher’s perspective

“The College is a place where any student can find a place to thrive. The wealth and breadth of opportunities available is considerable. To provide these opportunities to as diverse a student body as possible it is vitally important for as many people as possible to offer their support, either through volunteering their time or, if

financially capable, a donation. The Bursary scheme is such a positive mechanism through which students who would otherwise miss out on what the College has to offer can receive a place at BSC and flourish. I urge as many of you as possible to get involved and positively influence young people’s lives.”

An OS Perspective

“I supported the Stortford Foundation Bursary Campaign because I want to ensure that the same opportunities and experiences that were afforded to me by attending the College are opened up to as many people as possible.”

Bishop’s Stortford College benefits from a great community of donors and supporters, that have long made a difference to the education and experience enjoyed by our pupils.

The purpose of this report is to recognise the positive impacts that donors and supporters are making at the College, and to explain why, in a fee-paying school, they have such an important role to play in the independent school sector.

Our financial framework is common across most independent schools. Our charitable purpose is education and our strategy is centred around delivering excellence now and in the future. The College is a limited company and registered charity and it is a not-for-profit organisation, guided by the Charity Commission and overseen by our current fifteen governor trustees. We run the College as a charity with a strong focus on efficiency, protecting the value of the current educational offer and to ensure the viability of the College in the long-term. All surpluses are used to fund special projects, both capital and noncapital.

There is a delicate balance between the need to offer a competitive educational offer and the need to be affordable. We work hard to protect fee levels by being efficient and we have embarked on a deliberate strategy to increase non-fee income through the creation of Bishop’s

Stortford College Enterprises. In addition to being business and efficiency focused, given the role of the College there is demand from our community to give back, and given that we are a not-for-profit organisation it feels appropriate to develop complementary cultures of benevolence.

To offer a contemporary education, the College needs to invest in facilities and learning projects to meet the needs of a changing world. We have a wonderful campus in the middle of a growing town, but in some parts there is still a requirement for improved facilities. Currently identified for improvement in our master planning process are our Performing Arts and Sports facilities, and the Sixth Form Learning Centre. But in addition, there are many other touch points where we would like to see improvement.

Outside of capital builds our bursary programme is pivotal to our purpose and it is truly transformational for pupils who are provided with this opportunity. Unlike many schools in the sector, we do not have a large endowment invested to generate returns that can fund bursaries. Our first approach

is to secure funding for the Stortfordian Bursaries needed to finance two places each year, and you will see in this report how funds raised to date have had an immediate impact. Our longerterm aspiration is to build a large endowment to guarantee bursary funding.

For both capital projects and bursaries we approach our parents and Old Stortfordians for support. Through these opportunities benefactors will have the opportunity to engage and shape the future of the College. All support will speed up delivery of much needed projects and at the same time, protect fees and affordability. In anticipation, thank you.

LIST OF DONORS 2021–2022

The Governors of Bishop’s Stortford College, the College Executive, and all of the Stortfordian Foundation team would like to offer sincere thanks to all donors who gave this year, between 1st August 2021 and 31st July 2022.

In the list of names below, donors’ names appear alphabetically within the following groups: Old Stortfordians (listed by leaving year), Parents (current and former), Governors and Staff (current and former), and Friends of Bishop’s Stortford College. Donors appear as individuals rather than grouped by family relationship in this list, and some donors may appear more than once where they are constituents of more than one group.

We have been careful to omit the names of the 121 donors who have indicated that they would prefer to remain anonymous. We have also deliberately avoided giving any indication of the amount of individual or cumulative gifts to the Stortfordian Foundation. We are reminded that it is the accumulation of gifts of all sizes that enable us to fund bursaries and special projects. Please advise us of any changes by contacting us at foundation@ bishopsstortfordcollege.org

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT

Everything you have read about in this publication was only made possible thanks to the generosity of the Stortfordian Community like yourself. Gifts of any amount really do make a difference.

Regular gifts provide a reliable source of income and allow us to plan ahead. These can be made by standing order or direct debit on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis.

One-off gifts can be designated to a particular project that interests you, in addition to our main appeals.
