A Lot to Be Grateful For Looking back at another year that seems to have gone by too quickly, I’ve realized how these reflective moments have changed over the years. When I first started as a financial advisor, my goal was to help clients pursue their goals, whatever they may be. Now, 20-plus years later, I’ve had the honor of seeing many of those goals come to fruition. Some of our clients, whom I first met when they were in their 40s or 50s – at a time when retirement was still a distant thought – retired this year. Their children or grandchildren, who were still in diapers when their college funds were created, started college this year. Foundations, created with the dream of someday having a positive impact on others, awarded grants to deserving individuals and organizations. The longer we do this, the more fulfilling it becomes. It truly is amazing to be part of these life events. As we look back on another year, we want to give thanks to all of the wonderful clients we have the privilege of working with. We also extend a thank you in advance to future clients – we look forward to working with you. Your dreams are our mission.

Goals are personal. Your financial plan should be too.

Winter Leagues

There are so many outdoor activities to do in the area all summer long and winters in the Bismarck-Mandan area are not typically very warm, thus keeping all of us indoors. The great news is that we have lots of winter leagues you can join to keep you active all winter long. Read ahead to hear about what league you may want to join!

Basketball

Did you know basketball dates back to 1891 and was originally played with a soccer ball? Basketball has come a long way in the 130 years since then. Basketball is one of the most popular sports both to watch and play. If you are hoping to get back onto the court, Bismarck Parks and Rec and Mandan Parks and Rec both have adult leagues over the winter. The BPRD women’s league starts November 14th and meets Sundays at BHS. BPRD men’s leagues start the 14th-18th depending on the night their league plays (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). Location varies depending on the day. The MPRD adult leagues run December 1st through March 23rd on Wednesday evenings at the Mandan Middle School. For more information visit www.bisparks.org/programs/adult-programs/basketball/ or www.mandanparks.com/adult/basketball/.

Raquetball

Fast-paced and challenging, racquetball was first invented at a YMCA in Connecticut. From there, it gained in popularity and is now played internationally. If you are looking for ways to stay fit this winter that don’t require visits to the gym, racquetball is a fun way to give your whole body a workout. Because the sport requires running, swinging, lunging and more, it utilizes almost every muscle group. The average person burns 500 calories playing racquetball for an hour. The local YMCA has racquetball leagues for adults starting January 10th. Winter leagues at Capital Racquet begin January 10th and February 28th, each running for a little over a month. For more information on these leagues visit www.bismarckymca.org/adultraquetball.aspx or www.bisparks.org/programs/adultprograms/racquetball/.

Tennis

Tennis is believed to have originated from a game played in the 12th century, although rackets were not introduced to the sport until the 16th century, and while there has been much dispute over the invention of modern tennis, it occurred sometime around 1873. Indoors or outdoors, doubles or singles, tennis is a fun way to get active and burn some calories. The Bismarck Parks and Rec department offers indoor winter tennis leagues for anyone itching to hit some balls. Leagues run for an hour and a half and each session will run for 6 weeks. There are leagues for singles (men and women) or doubles (men, women, and mixed). Qualification for each league varies by skill level, but there are options for everyone, from beginners to advanced players. There are a variety of dates and times for these leagues so for more information check out www.bisparks.org/tennis-adult-fall/.

Volleyball

Would you play a sport called Mintonette? Mintonette, or as we now call it, volleyball, was invented as a mixture of tennis, basketball, and handball, and baseball. The inventor, William G. Morgan, wanted to create a less vigorous indoor sport that could be played by businessmen. The sport proved to be popular among both men and women and quickly gained popularity in America. American troops introduced the sport to Europeans during WW1 where it spread and gained international popularity. Bismarck and Mandan have a variety of volleyball leagues for players at any skill level. In the summer, people can join sand volleyball leagues, but the fun doesn’t stop in the winter. The BPRD has indoor volleyball leagues Mondays and Wednesdays for women, men's leagues on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and coed leagues on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from January 10th-March 24th. The MPRD has coed leagues Mondays, women's leagues Wednesdays, and men's leagues Thursdays. For more information check out www.bisparks. org/programs/adult-programs/volleyball/ or m andanparks.com/adult/volleyball/. 32

Wallyball

Chances are that you have never heard of this fast-paced sport. Wallyball is a sport similar to volleyball, but played in a racquetball court where it is legal to hit the ball off the walls. Because of this, the game takes on additional challenges due to the new angles and directions the ball can be coming from. Many of the moves in wallyball are counterintuitive to the average volleyball player. Fast-paced and exciting, you missed out if you didn’t get the chance to play this game in your phy-ed class. It’s not too late though if you didn’t. November 15th-January 8th you can join a coed, women's, or men's league thanks to the Bismarck Parks and Rec Department and try your hand at this unique sport. More information on how to sign up can be found here www. bisparks.org/programs/adult-programs/wallyball/.

Cornhole

If you have never played cornhole, are you even from the Midwest? A game particularly loved by our region actually seems to have originated in Massachusetts, although it grew in popularity in Chicago and spread from there. Popular at barbeques, graduation parties, and family reunions, the game has started to become organized into a sport with rules overseen by a handful of organizations and promoted by various tournaments throughout America. If you are looking to take your cornhole skills to the next level, Bismarck has two different organizations with leagues devoted to competitive playing of the Midwest’s favorite backyard game. 701 Capital Cornhole Leagues was founded in 2018 to provide social cornhole leagues and tournaments year round. For more information on winter leagues and tournaments, visit their website at www.701capitalcornhole.com/. BisMan Bean Bags Club is about making summer fun last year-round with indoor fall & winter cornhole leagues, as well as multiple outdoor summer league teams. Capital Curling Club If you haven’t been around much curling, it may seem like a strange sport with its brooms and granite stones. But once you learn the basics of curling, it becomes clear why so many people around the world love to compete in and cheer on curling teams. The game originated in Scotland on frozen ponds. Curling stones used now are made of such rare granite that it can only be found in two quarries in the entire world. There is an incredible amount of strategy involved in curling, earning it the moniker “Chess on Ice.” The brooms are used to both sweep away and melt the ice in order to guide the stone where the team wants. Curling is also considered a polite sport. Teams often congratulate each other on well-placed shots, and conceding a game when your team is too far behind to come back is simply considered good sportsmanship. In fact, curling is so good-mannered that the winners of a curling game traditionally buy the losing team a round of drinks after the game. If you are interested in playing for the first time, or are an experienced player, visit www.capitalcurlingclub.org/ to join a league, learn the basics, or find more information on this fascinating sport.

futsal

Although it shares many similarities with soccer, futsal is an entirely separate sport. Futsal is played indoors on a smaller, hard-floor court with a smaller, heavier ball. Because it is played on a smaller field than soccer, the game is faster-paced with more opportunities for scoring. Played all over the world, the game is most popular in countries like Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay where it was created in 1930. In the United States, a national professional futsal league was not established until 2016. The sport is rapidly gaining interest in America with more and more leagues being established. In Bismarck, visit www. magicsoccerskills.com/page/show/5972840-adult-futsal-2021-winterfutsal- to learn more about available winter futsal leagues you can join that run from January to March. There are two divisions offered: competitive or coed/recreational, so whatever your skill level, there is a way for you to get involved in futsal.

darts

Of all the sports featured in this issue, darts has the least barriers to participation. There are very few physical requirements meaning people of all ages, in all kinds of physical conditions, are able to play together. Darts is a great game for playing with your entire family or with all your friends. Darts originated in English pubs and were likely brought to America in the later 19th century. In addition to being a great way to socialize, darts improves your hand-eye coordination and strengthens your self-control. While darts is easily enjoyed from the comfort of your home, competitive darts is a fun way to get outside your home once in a while over the winter months. The Dakota Dart League offers fall/winter leagues that run through late March/early April. More information can be found at www. dakmusic.com/press/?page_id=186.

Pool

Pool is an old game with a long colorful history. Some of the stories of famous pool players like Frances Anderson or “handless” George H. Sutton are fascinating. Pool evolved from a lawn game similar to croquet that was played in the 15th century in northern Europe, and in 1873, it became the first sport to have a world championship. Pool is still a widely popular sport and while it is mainly seen as a casual game, there are many professional players who compete in international competitions. For those in the community who enjoy the competitive edge of pool, the Dakota Pool League offers winter leagues from September/October through March/April, Monday through Thursdays. Visit www.dakmusic.com/press/?page_id=182 for additional information.

Hockey

Hockey games are known for their non-stop action, incredible goal shots, and sometimes brutal hits, but where did it all start? The origins of hockey are widely debated. While some believe it started on frozen Canadian ponds in the mid-1800s, others contend hockey’s origins are even older and was first played by the French and Irish in the 1700s. We know for sure however, that the first organized indoor game was in 1875, and the NHL was established in 1917. Fun fact: Each member of the winning team of the NHL playoffs gets to have the Stanley Cup for one day. Many players take advantage of their day by eating all manners of food out of the cup, including cereal, meatballs, chicken wings, and ice cream. As fun as hockey is to watch, it’s even more fun to play. The Bismarck/Mandan area has two different hockey leagues: The Midwest Adult Hockey League, where more information can be found at www. facebook.com/MidwestAdultHockey and the Missouri River Adult Hockey League, www.mrahl.com/. 42 BISMARCK MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2021

Archery

From history class, to movies, to the Olympics, archery is one of the most recognizable sports in the world, not to mention one of the oldest. But for many people, it is one of the only popular sports they have never tried before. Archery has a myriad of health benefits including sharpening your focus, improving your hand-eye coordination, and growing your upper body strength (in addition to just being a lot of fun). If you are looking to try out this ancient sport or sharpen your skills, NISHU Bowmen archery club is holding indoor archery leagues starting January 10th-15th that will run for 10 weeks. There are a variety of leagues, each for a different skill level and interest, including target league, youth league, women's league, and more. Most leagues require a club membership to sign up, but not all. For more information, visit www.nishubowmen.com/indoor-leagues. BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

43

Bowling

Bowling is actually much older than most people realize. The earliest forms of bowling date back to 3200 BC in ancient Egypt. Modern bowling on the other hand was not established until the first indoor lanes were built in 1840 in New York City. Bowling balls were initially made out of wood, then rubber, before the invention of polyester resin which allows for the bright colorful balls we are used to playing with. Interestingly, there is no minimum weight limit for a bowling ball, and they can have as many as 12 holes if they all have a purpose. The sport itself went through many developments, such as being illegal for various groups for various reasons. Now, bowling is enjoyed by practically everyone. With little to no physical requirements, the game can be played by people of all ages. It is a fun social sport that can be as competitive as you want. Midway Lanes has a variety of different leagues you can sign up for to help beat the boredom this winter. More information can be found at midwaylanes.com/ league-sign-up.html. 44

GOLF

With beautiful courses, easy socializing, and relaxing play, it’s no wonder golf is such a popular sport. Golf was first invented in Scotland in 1457. Back then, the balls were made out of leather and feathers. The game is most popular in Ireland, but it is also popular in Canada, the UK, and the US. Golf has even been played on the moon. The only other sport that has claimed this honor is javelin. Even though winter (and snow) is fast approaching, there’s no need to put away your clubs. Golf Etc. has indoor golf leagues throughout the winter that anyone can join. To learn more, check out www.golfetcbismarck.com/golf-league.

Golf Putting

Golf may not be your thing, but don’t “putt” this winter league aside until you’ve tried it! The Bismarck Parks and Recreation Department is now offering a 10-week long golf putt league starting January 4th and running through March 9th. Anyone looking to improve their putting game in a relaxed and fun environment should join this new league. Prizes are awarded weekly, and no registration is required, although there still is a small fee to play. The league will meet at the Fore Seasons Center Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 9 am to 3 pm.

If you have the dough in a warm place like your kitchen, it should take right around an hour to rise. Next we will shape the dough into a log. It BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

is important to work on a greased surface so the dough doesn’t stick. Flatten the dough into a rectangle, roughly 6”x8”, grab two corners and fold them into the middle. Then grab the center and roll the loaf so the seam is down. Place the dough loaf into the loaf pan. Once the dough is in the loaf pan, we’ll cover it, and wait for it to rise about an inch over the top edge of the pan, which should take about an hour. After the dough has gone through its second rise, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine the egg white and water and gently brush it on to the top of the loaf and then sprinkle your extra oats on top. Pop the loaf into the oven and allow it to bake for 35-45 minutes or until the top of the loaf is a rich golden brown. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing. Leftovers can be frozen as well.

Talk of the Town Budding up to Your Florist

I

t’s the most wonderful time of year and the gals at Dutch Mill Florist have the perfect florals and greenery to compliment your favorite holiday décor and welcome your guests with beautiful, unique arrangements both inside and outside your home. Trending this holiday season are rich colors, varying textures, and dramatic custom arrangements. For fall it has been all about the big, bold colors. “Red, oranges, blues, and yellows mixed in with dried materials and grasses. That Boho Chic look is what I’ve been seeing a lot of,” explains Leilani Shannon, owner of Dutch Mill Florist. Pompass grass, dried protea, and mushrooms had added unique texture to autumn arrangements. Metallics and reusable pottery are trendy options for your Thanksgiving tablescape explains Leilani. “We’re doing a lot of metallic gold and darker green pottery as well as ceramic pumpkins with lids.” These are great reusable vessels to carry you into the winter months and use year after year. Wreaths are a staple in outdoor décor and Dutch Mill has both custom and in stock options available. Both fall and winter wreaths are available in forever fresh looks. As temperatures drop and winter arrives Dutch Mill will offer the best in holiday décor and will be ready with this year’s hottest trends and traditional favorites. “Metallics are a really hot item. Once we get a little bit closer to Christmas, we’ll be getting in the

fresh Christmas green like cedar,” Leilani explains. With the arrival of traditional Christmas greens comes garland and table centerpieces. Garlands and centerpieces can both be customized to each customers unique requests. “We’re seeing low table arrangements and big unique, asymmetrical shapes. Texture will again play a big role in holiday décor,” Leilani says. Locally sourced, poinsettias in various sizes and colors will satisfy both traditional décor loving and trend setting folks. Outdoor Christmas containers will be available in several ready-made options and always go fast. Get to Dutch Mill early

in the season as these are typically gone by December 1st. As always, coffees and John Kelly chocolates are available making Dutch Mill Florist your one stop shop for decorating and gifts. Don't forget, Dutch Mill offers delivery of not only their florals and plants but also their coffees and John Kelly chocolates making gift giving easy and convenient during the hectic holiday season.
