elcome to September. I hope you had a great summer. I see the Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a cold and snowy winter. Here’s to hoping their models are off and that whichever of the El Niño’s show up this winter is well rested and happy from a summer in the tropics. This month, the Chamber is focusing on Entrepreneurship. It is alive and well in our community. The story focuses in on what I consider traditional entrepreneurship. Those individuals that are striving to develop an idea into a successful business. As we look to the future, our hope (and theirs) is they become the next Bobcat; Microsoft or Facebook. Entrepreneurship is also showing up in other ways in our community. I want to congratulate Sanford Health; CHI St. Alexius Health and Basin Electric Power Cooperative for their innovative approach to childcare. If you missed it, these three companies are teaming up with the YMCA to provide 240 childcare positions to the community. The companies are guaranteeing a certain number of spots with others open to the public. This is an innovative approach to one of the pressing issues in our community. The companies pursing FiveSouth are also very entrepreneurial. The idea of developing Fifth Street was first identified in a 1980 study. Since then, the concept showed up in every study completed on downtown. Through the model of Bismarck Futures, the business community is funding the up-front costs needed to make the project happen. In many ways, it is assuming obligations that would normally fall on the city from funding studies to land purchase. Thanks to all those willing to risk their investment to make a better community. Finally, I want to say congratulations to another pair of entrepreneurs. Jon Simmers of Bismarck Aero Center and Dan Polk of Silicon Plains. Jon won the Chamber’s Small Business Person of the Year Award and Dan was the Chamber’s New Entrepreneur of the Year. These two young men are a sample of the bright future for the business community. Thanks for your efforts and dedication to small business. In closing, I urge you to look at attending Prairie Fire conference on October 24. This one day event featuring Daymond John of ABC’s Shark Tank is like no other in our community. It is intended to inspire us as business people, provide a spark to our entrepreneurial spirit and educate the community. We look forward to seeing you there.

BUILDING BUSINESS: ENTREPRENEURS BRING ENERGY AND VITALITY TO THE COMMUNITY

“Entrepreneurs and start-ups play an important role in a thriving community. They bring an energy and vitality that might not otherwise be present,” said Kelvin Hullet, president of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce. “The number of startups is a good judge of the health of the economy and a measure of the community’s attractiveness to business.” Connecting Entrepreneurs Hullet said as interest in the community has grown, the Chamber has worked to provide support to entrepreneurs through events and public policies that support the entrepreneur community and small business.

“One of the key benefits of Chamber membership is the opportunity to network with and identify like-minded individuals or services that can assist in creating a successful business.” Garrett Moon, co-founder of Todaymade, a web products company, said when he started his company in Bismarck in 2010, he utilized his prior business experience, as well as the connections he fostered in the community. “There is a lot we can learn from other people, and we had some good connections that we could use to get us started,” he notes. Moon said from his experiences as an entrepreneur, he now understands the importance of community support. “There is an important role for businesses that have been successful in looking out for and helping those who are starting now,” he said. Moon said he also focused on becoming involved with community events and opportunities to network with other entrepreneurs and business leaders. “There are a lot of things happening in Bismarck-Mandan, and there is a lot of really great talent that is looking for opportunity.”

Entrepreneurs build businesses through sound ideas, hard work and community support. The risks taken often lead to great successes, which reflect not only on the business, but also on the community. In BismarckMandan, a budding economy and growing business community have created a welcoming environment for entrepreneurs from across the state, region and world looking to start a business.

He said he and many other entrepreneurs are active in the Start Bismarck organization, which promotes startup activities, organizes events and encourages risk taking within the community. One of the events coordinated by Start Bismarck is One Million Cups, a weekly meeting of entrepreneurs, which gives companies the opportunity to present to the community and learn how the community can help support their business.

www.bismarckmandan.com In October, Start Bismarck is also opening a co-working space in downtown Bismarck, which will provide a workspace for independent workers and entrepreneurs, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with other members of the community, he notes. Moon said when starting his technology business in Bismarck-Mandan, he wondered about its chances for success. “There have been plenty of times when I have thought, ‘can we do this from Bismarck?’,” he said. “But entrepreneurship isn’t something you wait to happen to you, you have to make it happen. It’s really rewarding if you get there.” In 2013, Moon’s business expanded into a new venture with CoSchedule, a program now used by more than 10,000 bloggers, editors and social marketers to plan blogs, content marketing and social media. “This community has been a clean slate for us to get started, and we have really been able to stand out. We are in a state that is very hungry for entrepreneurs, and we have the community behind us.” Keenan Hauff, who co-founded Threefold, a creative video production studio, in 2013 with his two brothers, said Bismarck-Mandan is an exciting place to start a business. “It is fun to be a part of a community with new activity and growth taking place. You can build great companies right here, and still have an impact all over the world.” He noted the success of the business is due, in part, to the network developed within the community. “I think the key to success for any entrepreneur, no matter what city you are in, is being connected to people,” said Hauff. “Business leaders play a crucial role in the success of new companies. Young entrepreneurs look forward to meeting business leaders and their support, visibility and mentorship is essential to building a positive environment for startups to grow.”

Anyone can support entrepreneurs in the community, said Hauff, and support is a key to the success of new businesses in Bismarck-Mandan. “I encourage everyone to get involved with Start Bismarck. Even if you are not interested in starting your own business, your support of new business in the community is essential and a great way to be involved in what is happening in your community.” Supporting Entrepreneurs “Bismarck is in a very good position to attract new talent and employees and keep them here,” said Jared Stober, entrepreneurship manager with the North Dakota Department of Commerce. “You’re in an economy that is growing and an environment that is very supportive.” He said programs and financing geared toward supporting entrepreneurs are also helping to create new businesses in the state. The Department of Commerce offers the Innovate ND program, which provides access to venture tools, online entrepreneur education and extensive resources for entrepreneurs. Started in 2006, the program has helped more than 500 entrepreneurs and, in 2014 alone, helped to support a total of 71 entrepreneurs.

Hauff said Threefold’s success was also fostered by strong mentors, including their father, Jerry Hauff, a North Dakota native and long-time Bismarck businessman. “Garrett Moon and Justin Walsch with Todaymade and CoSchedule have also been great mentors. FEATURE “In 2014, our program was so successful, we ran out of funding in the first nine months,” said Stober. “With our new funds for the current biennium, we combined the tech-based entrepreneurial grants with the Innovate ND funding.” Innovate ND also restructured into a new phase-based program, which awards funding through a voucher and grant system. With an entry fee of $250, a voucher of $2,500 is issued in Phase I and, with an entry fee of $500, a voucher of $5,000 is issued in Phase II. Vouchers can be used for a business plan, prototype development, coaching, and consulting and marketing assistance to help prepare entrepreneurs for their business launch. Phase III provides entrepreneurs with a $10,000 grant, and Phase IV provides a grant up to $15,000 for participants. The grants are used to execute the plan developed in the first two phases of the program. “If a participant goes through the whole program, they can now receive up to $32,500 total,” said Stober. Each participant in the program is required to work with a certified entrepreneurial center, and each phase of the program has a set maximum time limit for completion. Phase V of the program is graduation, in which participants work with the entrepreneurial center to identify the next steps for their business and explore avenues for additional financing.

“If you are an entrepreneur and you can meet the criteria for Innovate ND, there is no better program out there,” Stober noted. “We don’t help create businesses, we help accelerate business.” Additional information on the Innovate ND program and its requirements are available at www.innovatend.com. “North Dakota in general has a lot of opportunities, like Innovate ND, that just don’t exist in neighboring states or even across the country,” said Stober. “There’s never been a time like now where there is so much support for entrepreneurs.” Prairie Fire Conference The business and entrepreneurial community in Bismarck-Mandan is also coming together to host the Prairie Fire Conference on Oct. 24 at the Bismarck Events Center. “For more than a year, the Prairie Fire Conference has been in development,” said Hullet. “The concept is to create a conference with speakers that challenge the business community to ‘reach higher.’ To create a venue that highlights our startup community and serves to educate the broader community about the importance of entrepreneurs.” The first conference of its kind in the Midwest, speakers will highlight the importance of fostering startup communities and how to make them successful, the different roles government and business leaders hold in supporting our local communities, and how to make the most of opportunities in the local area. Hullet said the Prairie Fire Conference is geared toward the entire business community. “From our small businesses to large employers, the speakers at Prairie Fire have a message that will resonate through all sizes of businesses.” Additional information and registration for the Prairie Fire Conference is available at www.prairiefireconference.com Looking to the Future Hullet says Bismarck-Mandan is in a tremendous period of growth and change, and entrepreneurs will continue to play an important role in the community’s success. “Bismarck-Mandan is in a transition from a big town to a small city. Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within the organization. A: My wife and I own and operate Mark’s Heating & Cooling. I am involved with the sales, estimating, design, and installation of HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning) products and services. I am also involved in repair work for customers. Q: Briefly tell us the history of Mark’s Heating & Cooling Inc. A: In high school I worked for Mandan Sheet Metal and then decided to go to school in Wahpeton for HVAC training. After graduation I worked for Mandan Sheet Metal for 10 years. I decided to open my own business in 1989.

Q: What differentiates your company from its competitors? A: We are a small business and are blessed with great employees. Our goal is always to go the extra mile to help our customers with their needs.

Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted your company? A: With the additional residential and commercial growth in our area it has intensified the need for products and services. It has become more of a challenge to keep up with customers’ needs in a timely manner.

Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had to deal with? A: Heating & cooling systems are a lot different than they were 50 years ago. The customer today has a wide array of energy efficient products to choose from. R-410A has replaced R-22 as the preferred refrigerant for use. R-22 was the refrigerant of choice for more than four decades. What does the future of your business look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: The future of both our business and the industry is very promising. We live in an area with continued growth and extremes in weather which always makes for demands in the heating and cooling field. Q: Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heating & Cooling Inc has been a member since 1994, why do you continue to renew each year? A: The Chamber is a great advocate for businesses and it helps give smaller businesses a voice on different issues. What should Chamber members know about your company that may assist them within theirs? A: We have always strived to be honest with our customers. If something does go wrong on a job, we do our utmost best to make it right. We try to treat our customers with the service and professionalism we would expect ourselves.

In recognition of Suicide Prevention Month (September) and Substance Abuse Prevention Month (October), join the North Dakota National Guard for the 2nd Annual Community Fit Fair to encourage a culture of total fitness! WERRE TO RECEIVE UGPTI LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Robin Werre, recently retired executive director of BisMan Transit, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute Oct. 1 at its annual award banquet in Fargo. The award recognizes Werre’s efforts in starting and growing the capitol city’s transit system. She was on the original board of directors when the board asked her to serve as executive director on a temporary basis. She retired July 15 after 25 years. It was her empathy for those with disabilities that drove her to push for improved transportation options in Bismarck and Mandan. Under Werre’s direction, Bis-Man transit launched in 1990 with limited paratransit service. The agency added Capital Area Transit, its fixed-route service, in 2003. Today the system continues to provide door-to-door transportation service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for persons age 60 or older or individuals with disabilities. Capital Area Transit has grown to include 12 routes serving Bismarck and Mandan. Some credit growth of the transit system and its ability to move customers and employees, with enhancing economic growth in the Bismarck-Mandan area. She obtained funding for the current transit facility and for two garage additions.

While at Bis-Man Transit, she was a member and treasurer of Community Elder Service Network, chair and member of the Dakota Center of Independent Living. Werre is a graduate of Bismarck High School and Bismarck Junior College. She received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Mary College. Her first career was with Job Service of North Dakota. While working there she served on several commissions appointed by the governor and served as chair and member of the North Dakota Developmental Disabilities Council and Chair of the Protection and Advocacy Board. In 1978, Werre was selected as one of 10 outstanding Women of America. Werre was also instrumental in launching Bismarck’s Pride Inc., an organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities realize their potential to live and work in the community. She was president and member of the incorporating board of Pride Industries and a member of the board and Central Nodak Development. Werre worked at Pride for eight years. She also served on the Bismarck Mayor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities.

NORTH DAKOTA HOUSING INCENTIVE FUND RECEIVES $4 MILLION CONTRIBUTION FROM U.S. BANK

The North Dakota Housing Incentive Fund (HIF) is getting a big boost with a $4 million contribution from U.S. Bank. HIF supports the development of affordable housing in the state.

The HIF contribution was presented at the North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck on Thursday, Aug. 13 by U.S. Bank Regional President Tim Hennessy to North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple and North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) Executive Director Jolene Kline.

NDHFA is a self-supporting state agency dedicated to making housing affordable for all North Dakotans. U.S. Bank was one of the first companies to make a contribution to the fund when it was created in 2011. MISSOURI VALLEY FAMILY YMCA AND LOCAL BUSINESSES CREATE INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR CHILD CARE SHORTAGE

In a unique, first-of-its-kind agreement, the Missouri Valley Family YMCA (Y) has partnered with three local businesses in the Bismarck-Mandan community to expand its quality child care services. The new child care location will open by Feb. 1, 2016, at the former Rasmussen College building, located on East Century Ave. The building lease between the property owner and the YMCA has been signed. Three partnering organizations – Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Sanford Health and CHI St. Alexius Health – are each committing to a designated number of slots that will be filled by their employees’ children. The new facility, which will be named YMCA Youth Development Center North, will care for a total of 240 children, ages infant to pre-K. Child care openings not filled by the three partnering businesses will be open to the public. Bill Bauman, executive director/CEO at the Missouri Valley Family YMCA, said the new facility is rooted in community. “We’ve got three partnering businesses who are committed to this project, the children of their employees and this community. We have a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of our kids,” Bauman said.

The local businesses’ decision to partner with the Y for child care is an innovative move to address their employees’ child care needs.

NORTH DAKOTA UNIVERSITY SYSTEM UNDERGOES STAFFING CHANGES The North Dakota University System has had several changes and adjustments take place to ensure proper staffing while plans continue to develop for the coming year under the leadership of Chancellor Mark Hagerott.

“I’ve been on the job for less than a month, and there is much to learn and many decisions to make. I’ve been meeting with legislators, business leaders and our own staff to learn as much as I can about our system and how we can best meet the needs of our state,” Hagerott said. “We all want a system that serves our students and communities and as we move forward, the changes that are made will reflect the input and collaboration of all of the system’s stakeholders.” Murray Sagsveen served for more than two years as chief of staff and ethics officer, and until July 1 also oversaw legal services for the NDUS. Sagsveen’s last day is today and Lisa Feldner, Ph.D., current vice chancellor for Information Technology and Institutional Research, will take over as interim chief of staff. “We will all miss Murray and I am very appreciative of the extensive knowledge he brought to our office. Lisa brings a wealth of experience about K-20 education, state government, technology, critical systems, and oversight of large budgets, projects and staffs to this appointment,” Hagerott said.

Legislation also impacted the NDUS budget for internal audit functions, so those adjustments are also being made. State Board of Higher Education Chair Kathleen Neset and Hagerott have authorized a temporary extension of employment to auditors Tim Rerick, Cynthia Beiswenger and Eric Miller through October 2015. This will allow the Board and the audit committee an opportunity to develop plans for future funding and organizational structure. Rerick, the NDUS director of internal audit, has agreed to assume Sagsveen’s ethics officer duties. Richard Rothaus, Ph.D., has been appointed interim vice chancellor of academic and student affairs, replacing Sonia Cowen, Ph.D. “We greatly appreciate all who have accepted these interim appointments. I know it not only impacts them, but it also affects their teams as duties are re-assigned. We have been working on adjustments to the Board’s strategic plan and the system office plan and will have further discussions in the coming months on future staffing of these positions. We are all in this together,” Hagerott said.

STATE BOARD APPOINTS OZBUN INTERIM DSU PRESIDENT The State Board of Higher Education, at a special meeting today, voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Jim L. Ozbun as interim president of Dickinson State University. Current DSU President D.C. Coston recently informed North Dakota University Jim L. Ozbun System Chancellor Mark Hagerott that he is stepping down on Aug. 15 due to health concerns ahead of his originally planned retirement date of February. Ozbun will begin serving as interim president Aug. 17. The Board also agreed that the timeframe for the interim service would be negotiated by Hagerott with Ozbun depending on the needs of the university and the successful search for a permanent president. “I want to thank D.C. Coston for his years of service. What is important at this point is that we take care of him and his family as he faces health issues. I appreciate that the Board could make time for a special meeting for the urgent matter of appointing an interim president,” said Hagerott. “Dr. Ozbun is a respected member of the Dickinson community, and with his extensive background, he will be able to fulfill the duties as we continue our search for a permanent president.”

At the Chancellor’s recommendation, the Board considered three interim candidates: Ozbun; Cynthia Lee A. Pemberton, Ed.D., current DSU provost and vice president of Academic Affairs; and Larry C. Skogen, Ph.D., who would have served both as the president of Bismarck State College and DSU. Hagerott thanked all for their willingness to serve, but said he thought Ozbun would be able to give the university his full attention, which is critical at this time of transition.

Ozbun is a retired academic with a long history of service in higher education. Before purchasing a small cattle ranch in western North Dakota, Ozbun served from 1988 to 1995 as President of North Dakota State University. Ozbun’s career led him through faculty roles and leadership positions at Cornell University, the University of Minnesota, Kansas State University, Washington State University and NDSU. His work in research and teaching related to physiology and nutrition of crop plants. Ozbun has served on numerous boards and committees throughout his path of service, including most recently the Medora Foundation Board, St. Joseph’s Hospital Board in Dickinson, the Partners for Grassland Stewardship and as Chair of the North Dakota Racing Commission. He has authored dozens of scientific journal articles and advised numerous graduate students, including 10 Ph.D. dissertations. His Ph.D. is in Soils and Plant Physiology. The search for the next DSU president began immediately after Coston’s February announcement, and a presidential search committee was formed in April. DSU’s fall semester begins Aug. 24.

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. For 2015-16, U.S. News evaluated hospitals in 16 adult specialties and ranked the top 50 in most of the specialties. Less than three percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for Best Hospitals 2015-16 were nationally ranked in even one specialty. “A Best Hospital has demonstrated expertise in treating the most challenging patients,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “A hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of.”

The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. U.S. News used the same data, as well as the new Best Hospitals for Common Care ratings, first published in May, to produce the state and metro rankings. Since beginning in April of 1992, the clinic has provided over 15,000 total therapy sessions for local children. Free speech therapy sessions are available to any child who is aged two to seven and whose family is unable to pay for such services.

BPS SUPERINTENDENT SHARES CORE BELIEFS

If you ran the largest school district in the state, what would guide you as you did your work?

This fall, Bismarck School Superintendent Tamara Uselman wrote a letter to each parent in the public school district. Starting her 5th year with BPS, Uselman recalls sharing her core values with school employees and families when she started in 2011. They have not changed. 1. Safety first. Rest assured the safety of students and staff at BPS is top priority. Remind students to report safety concerns to a principal or teacher or to Text-a-Tip. The School Board has used state safety grant dollars and local match funds to improve security in school buildings. The district’s safety officer works closely with police department School Resource Officers (SROs) to maintain campus safety and security. Yet the most impactful strategy to improve safety is to build community by inviting all people, students, parents, and staff, to have a voice in their school community. 2. All means all. We care about the academic and social-emotional growth of every single BPS student. Regardless of whether a child’s learning begins from a point of struggle or a point of acceleration, it’s fair to expect at least a year’s growth in skill for each child every year. Growth is the single most important measure.

3. Food is fuel and movement is magic. There is fear that the life expectancy of youth is dropping by five years compared to that of adults, due largely to diseases related to diet. The brain learns best when it is fueled by nutritious food and healthy snacks. In addition, the human brain needs the human body to move.

4. Students today are absolutely awesome! Young people are capable of learning high academic content and mastering skills in communicating, collaborating, critical thinking and creativity (4Cs). Students are developing habits of good citizens in the real world as well as in the digital world. 5. There is only one earth. In addition to reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic, at BPS we practice the other three Rs with all of our resources: reduce consumption, reuse when possible, and recycle when not. Doing so is both environmentally wise and fiscally intelligent.

Uselman says learning may be the most important work on earth. She is “thankful daily to be part of this beautiful community and thankful even more to have a role in educating the students of BPS.” She is also “deeply respectful to have the opportunity and to carry the responsibility involved in ensuring every single student is developing the success skills needed today and into the future.” The superintendent says she has seen the community pull together to “do the right thing for kids in the long run” by providing quality educational space for children to learn and grow. As Bismarck Public Schools responds to ever increasing enrollment in a fiscally responsible manner, the district will continue its tradition of listening to and working with the community.
