“
We’re very pleased to offer the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at BSC. Because we have so many OLLI members already in our area, the ability to continue providing the meaningful and popular OLLI offerings here is exciting,” says BSC President Larry C. Skogen. “And we are looking forward to folding our OLLI members into our campus life wherever possible – this is a great opportunity to truly embrace lifelong learning and offer more value to those 50 and older in the community.
“
“
We are delighted to support Bismarck State College’s efforts to provide enriching and engaging educational programs for seasoned adults in North Dakota,” said Osher Foundation President, Mary Bitterman. “Bismarck State has already demonstrated its ability to develop an outstanding curriculum of great variety as well as a dynamic learning community in which people come together to explore ideas and form new and lasting friendships. We are enthusiastic about the future of the program and look forward to seeing it continue to grow and thrive.

FREE Movies Movie - Forgotten Ellis Island (2008)
Visit the abandoned immigrant hospital on Ellis Island. During the great wave of immigration, 22 medical buildings sprawled across two islands adjacent to Ellis Island, the largest port of entry to the United States. Massive and modern, the hospital was America’s first line of defense against contagious, often virulent, disease. In the era before antibiotics, tens of thousands of immigrant patients were separated from family, detained in the hospital and healed from illness before becoming citizens. FORGOTTEN ELLIS ISLAND is a powerful reminder of the best -- and worst -- of America’s dealings with its new citizens-to-be. 5/18 BSC NECE, Basin Auditorium (304)

Lecture The Power of Posters in WWI
OLLI @ BSC
The following classes are for registered OLLI members only.
Posters were one of the most important means of spreading propaganda during World War I, as radio and television were not available. Posters could be found in newspapers, billboards, or posted on walls in theaters, restaurants and schools. The format of posters allowed quick and easy distribution of ideas, patriotic themes and messages that could be aimed at all ages and walks of life. Almost all the governments of the nations involved in the Great War invested heavily in their production. Posters filled an important role in the war as they could range from simple messages which grabbed your attention, easy to understand. A poster could be used to recruit men for the war, raise public opinion as well as their financial support. 6/5 BSC NECE, Room 103 Fee: $20
Tue 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Instructor: Perry Hornbacher Course ID: 7070001

Fri 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM Course ID: 7000001
Movie - Megan Leavey (2017)
Based on the true life story of a young Marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. 7/20 BSC NECE, Basin Auditorium (304)

What the Hell is Happening?
If you think today’s world seems unhinged, then you’re in good company. Not only are ordinary citizens concerned about the path the United States and the rest of the world is on but so are many historians and analysts. Events are now taking place that, to some, are eerily reminiscent of previous periods of international tumult and revolution. This course will seek to provide historical context to today’s headlines by providing political theories from various experts throughout the years that explain how we arrived at this point. Among the areas we will examine are: The polarization of American politics, the retreat of democracy, the rise of China, Islamic fundamentalism, and the future of international power. The lecture will open each session with discussion to follow. 6/6, 6/13, 6/20 BSC NECE, 304 Fee: $50
